*저도 정확하게 아는 것은 아니므로 지적할 부분이 있으시면 해주시면 감사하겠습니다. 이전 글(https://new.redtea.kr/?b=3&n=9296)에서 이어집니다. 3. 개신교 우파 홍경래의 난에서도 알 수 있듯이 조선시대부터 서북 출신은 관직에 진출하는 것이 힘들었고, 관직에 진출한다 해도 승진에 있어 많은 차별을 받았다. 대신 상업에 집중하여 경제적으로 발전할 수 있었으나 풍족한 물산에 대한 가혹한 수탈로 조선 정권에 강한 반감을 갖고 있었다. 이러한 특징으로 인해 서북 지방은 기독교가 가장 빠르게 전파된 지역 중 하나였다. 정치적 고립이 반봉건 근대화를 불렀고, 성리학적 질서에 대한 반감으로 1930년대 기독교 인구의 절반이 서북 출신이었다. 해방 이후 소련에 의해 토지해방이 진행되자 평안도의 자본가, 지주와 개신교 신자들이 월남하게 되고 이들이 서북청년단을 구성하여 초창기 기독교 세력에 영향을 주게 된다. 월남한 이들의 눈에 남한은 언덕 위의 도시(city on a hill)로 보였을 것이고, 역사적으로 한국 기독교가 공산주의에 대한 뿌리깊은 반감을 갖게 된 것은 어떻게 보면 필연적이다. 그러나 그럼에도 나는 개신교 우파는 실제 영향력에 비해 과대대표되는 집단 중 하나라고 생각한다. 내가 개신교 우파가 과대대표되고 있다고 생각하는 근거는 크게 두 가지이다. 첫 번째로 종교는 대한민국에서 후보를 선택하는 데 가장 중요한 기준이 아니었다. 대한민국은 중동과는 비교할 수 없고 흔히 자주 비교되는 미국과는 달리 굉장히 세속주의적인 나라이고, 이례적으로 무교 비율이 높은 나라이다. 또한 특정 종교 지도자들이 정치적으로 편향되어 있다는 것은 사실일 수 있으나 그렇다고 일반 신자들이 종교 때문에 정치적으로 편향되어 있다는 데이터가 없다. 두번째로, 종교-가치파들이 민감하게 반응하는 주제는 외교나 경제보다는 민감한 사회 이슈에 대한 판결들, 예컨대 낙태 합헌이나 동성결혼 인정 등이다. 자연스럽게 그런 판결을 결정할 수 있는 위치, 즉 대법관 임명에 촉각을 곤두세운다. 예컨대 복음주의 세력이 대주주 중 하나이기 때문에 그들의 눈치를 볼 수밖에 없는 미국의 경우에는 연방대법관 후보자가 그동안 어떤 판결을 내렸는지 커다란 이슈가 된다. 하지만 한국에서 헌법재판관 후보 지명은 그동안 개인의 흠결이 있었는지 등이 주요했었지, 진보/보수 성향 판결을 내렸는지가 당락을 좌우하는 팩터가 아니었다. 그 결과 헌법재판소에서는 큰 홍역 없이 굵직한 진보적인 판결을 처리할 수 있었다. 그래서 이들의 영향력은 제한적이라고 본다. 따라서 몇몇 개신교 우파의 목사들이 사회가 받아들이기 힘든 수위의 막말을 쏟아내는 것은 사실이나, 이들이 가진 제한적인 확장성으로 인해, 이들이 정치적으로 유의미한 세력화가 되어 있다고는 생각하지 않는다. 물론 어떤 이들은 이렇게 말할 수도 있을 것이다. 그들의 숫자가 적을지라도 잘 결집되어 있고, 한 문제(예컨대 동성애)에 집중할 수 있지 않은가? 그렇다면 나는 이렇게 반문하고 싶다. 그래서 이들이 헌법재판관을 만들 수 있는가? 이들이 지지하는 보수 성향의 재판관이 있고, 대통령이 그를 지명하지 않을 때 느껴야 하는 압박감이 있는가? 그렇지 않은 이상 그들은 영원히 달리는 기차를 보고 짖는 개에 불과하다. 그리고 모두들 알다시피, 개가 짖어도 열차는 간다. 한편 기독교 우파의 주장은 민족주의와 선민사상과 연결되기도 한다. 이들은 성경에 나오는 유태인의 역사와 한민족의 역사를, 그들이 세운 이스라엘, 미국을 대한민국과 연결하는 멘탈리티를 갖고 있다. 이들에게 미국이 세계 최강대국이 된 것은 선택받은 국가였기 때문이며, 한국이 전쟁의 참화를 딛고 선진국의 반열에 진입한 것도 하나님의 은총이라는 논리는 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 이런 주장을 주로 하는 목사들은 보편종교로서의 기독교를 보여주는 신약보다는 민족종교 특징을 보여주는 구약을 주로 인용하며, 유태인 광야의 역사를 한민족 일제강점기와 일치시키는 과감한 비유법을 사용하기도 하며, 지구상에 하나님의 선택을 받은 민족은 유태인과 한민족 뿐이라는 괴이한 선민사상을 설파하기도 한다. 이 생각은 성경에 나쁜 것으로 되어 있는 동성애, 낙태의 확대 등을, 이스라엘, 미국과 마찬가지로 하나님의 동산이 되어 있는 대한민국을 무너트리는 시도로 간주하며 구원을 위해 이곳을 지켜야만 한다는 국가주의로도 확대된다. 종종 이들은 반공주의와 결합하여 극렬한 반북적인 스탠스를 취하기도 하는데, 공산주의 자체가 종교를 인정하지 않는 체제이기도 하며, 무엇보다 초기 한국 기독교의 형성에서 개신교 신자들과 월남 지주들의 자식들로 구성되었던 서북청년단을 빼놓을 수 없기 때문이기도 할 것이다. -주요 관심사 : 낙태, 동성애, 창조론 등 사회적 이슈 4. 뉴라이트 이들은 주로 탈민족주의에 기초하여 새로운 대한민국의 건국 신화를 만드는 데 초점을 둔다. 그렇다면 이들이 생각하기에 기존의 건국 신화란 무엇인가? 그것은 기존의 민족주의적 관점에서 바라본 실패주의적 사관이다. 이런 실패주의적 사관은 다음과 같은 스토리를 가진다. 대한민국은 성립부터 '같은 민족이 둘로 나뉜' 실패한 건국이었다. 또한 반민특위 해체로 일제 부역자들을 제대로 청산하지 못했으며, 뒤이은 반공주의 아래 부역자들이 가면을 바꿔 사회 지도층을 차지하도록 만들었다. 한편 군사 쿠데타로 집권한 권위주의 정권은 미흡한 대일청구권 협상으로 진정한 사과도 받지 못한 채 문제를 미봉하는 데 그쳤다. 이들은 국가 주도하에 경제 정책을 강력히 추진하여 성과를 거두었으나 민주주의를 계속해서 후퇴시켰다. 87년 체제의 성립으로 정치적 측면에서 커다란 진전을 이루었으나 3당합당을 거치며 친일/친독재 세력은 여전히 현재 존재하는 정당으로 계승되고 있다. 盧의 2003년 3.1.절 연설을 인용하면, "우리의 근현대사는 선열들의 고귀한 희생에도 불구하고 정의는 패배했고 기회주의가 득세했다" 그렇다면 이들이 바라보는 탈민족주의 역사관이란 무엇인가? 먼저 뉴라이트는 건국을 실패로 바라보지 않는다. 해방은 일본 제국주의의 모순이 극에 달했을 때 급작스럽게 찾아왔고, 해방 직후의 해방공간은 첨예한 이념간의 대립으로 혼돈과 광기에 빠져들어 투표와 같은 다수결의 원리에 따른 공공선택이 불가능한 공간이었다고 말한다. 즉, 그 당시 어떤 이념과 경제체제를 선택할 것인가, 한반도에서 어떤 국가를 수립할 것인가, 민족이 우선인가 이념이 우선인가에 대한 합의가 되어 있지 않았다는 입장을 견지한다. 그 결과 민족과 반공 사이에서, 반공을 선택했던 이승만의 역할을 강조함으로써 그를 건국의 아버지로 놓는다. 뉴라이트가 평가하는 이승만의 업적은 크게 두 가지로서 하나는 농지개혁을 통해 지주제를 붕괴시켰고, 공산주의가 농민 계층에게 확산되는 것을 막았다는 것이다. 두번째는 한미상호방위조약을 통해 한국이 실제적 힘을 바탕으로 자유민주주의가 유지될 수 있도록 했다는 것이다. 또한 이 과정에서 반민특위를 공격하여 부역자 청산을 막은 것은, 다소간 잘못된 행위이나 그 당시 친일 부역자에 대한 기용은 나라가 유지되기 위해선 필요악에 가까웠다고 주장한다. 이후 군부독재 정권이 일본과의 관계개선으로 얻은 자금을 갖고 산업화에 돌입하였고, 이는 종속이론이나 반식민지 반봉건론 같은 이론으로는 반식민지로 전락했어야 하나, 좌파의 이론과는 달리 성공적인 결과로 입증되었다는 것이다. 양측의 논지는 이미 논문집 <해방전후사의 인식>, <해방전후사의 재인식>. 혹은 대중서 <강준만의 현대사 산책>, <대한민국 이야기> 등을 통해 잘 나와 있으니 어느 쪽의 의견이 보다 사실에 가까운가를 논하지는 않겠다. 다만 뉴라이트의 특징을 세 가지로 바라볼 수 있다. 첫째로 이들은 한국 보수세력을 위한 새로운 신화를 만들려고 하고 있다. 기존 한국 보수는 친일, 친군부의 잔재라는 이름표를 주홍글씨로 달고 살아야만 했다. 기존 친일에서 친러, 친러에서 친미로 갈아타는 꺼삐딴 리, <여명의 눈동자>에서 광복이 되었음에도 악질 형사 스즈키가 종로 경찰서 고등계에 똑같이 으시대는 이미지가 여전히 대중의 뇌리에 강하게 박혀 있는 것을 의식한 탓일까? 그들은 기존의 <태백산맥>등의 과장된 묘사를 지적하고 해방 공간에 대한 상황들을 자세히 묘사하며 좌우가 극단적으로 나뉘어 서로 총부리를 겨누는 상황에서 과연 어떤 것이 최선이었는지 묻는다. 온건하게 평가하면 이승만에 대한 온당한 평가를 요구하는 것이고 냉정하게 평가하면 좋게 말해도 면죄부다. 둘째로 이들은 기본적으로 '위로부터의 운동'이다. 뉴라이트는 대중적으로 시작된 것이 아니라, 식민지 근대화론 연구를 중점적으로 하던 낙성대학파를 이론적 배경으로 학계에서 시작되었다. 처음에는 자본주의 맹아론의 주된 주장인 경영형 부농론을 반박하기 위해 소농사회론을 가지고 반박하면서 시작되었고, 이후 조선 후기와 일제 강점기를 다룬 수량경제사적 연구들이 시작되어 차츰 뉴라이트의 사상적 근거를 만들었다. 3번에 대해서는 의견이 좀 다른 게 단일화된 세력집단으로서 수권을 노릴 정도의 영향력을 갖추지 못한 것은 맞지만, 지역커뮤니티를 이끄는 만큼 지방정계를 좌우하는 핵심요소이고, 나아가 국회의원에게까지 영향을 줘 중앙정계에도 간접적인 영향력을 행사할 수 있다고 생각합니다. 예전에는 몰랐는데 인식하고 나니 지역사회에서 네임드교회의 위세가 대단하긴 하더라고요. 그래도 과대평가라는 점에서는 동의하고요.
