최근에 유시민이 '역사의 역사' 저자와의 대화에서 다음과 같은 발언을 해서 논란이 되었습니다. [ 20대들이 화를 내는 것도 이해할 측면이 있어요. 지금 20대들은 말 잘듣는 여자애들을 예뻐해주고 남자애들을 차별했는지 겪은 세대에요. 우리가 군대도 가야되고 특별히 받은 것도 없는데 자기 또래에서는 여자들이 유리하단 말이에요.자기들은 축구도 봐야되는데 여자들은 축구도 안보고 자기들은 게임도 해야되는데 여자들은 공부하지 모든 면에서 우리가 불리해. ] 때문에 파이어 되었는데 저는 이 발언이 이렇게 파이어될만한 일인가? 라는 생각을 했습니다. 월드컵 시즌에 고시 합격률이 남자들이 떨어지고 하는 현상 처럼 학업 성취도를 볼 때 남성들이 여성들에 비해 외부 요소들에 대한 영향이 크고 그래서 남학생들을 일부러 남고로 보내기도 하잖아요. 그러다보니 이게 무슨 맥락에서 나온 말인가 살펴보아야겠다 싶어서 영상을 보고 녹취를 했습니다. 그런데 작업을 끝내고 난 후 제 결론은 [ 이 발언이 문제가 아니라 이 발언 뒤에 숨어있는 생각이 문제다. ] 라고 생각하게 되었습니다. 궁금하신 분들은 계속 읽어주세요. https://youtu.be/gzAoQ5OL_Rw -질문- (전략) 최근에 여론조사 중에 문재인 정부에 대한 지지율분포가 나왔는데 유독 20대만 성별이 바뀌어서 남성들은 굉장히 반대하고 그 비율만큼 여성들이 찬성하고 있더라고요 그게 여러가지 해석들을 보면 젠더문제가 있다는 사람들도 있고 ... 어떤 20대 남성들의 삶이 힘들다고 하는데, 그 부분에 대해서 어떻게 생각하시는지 -유시민- 저도 신문에, 언론에 보도된 거 봤는데요 그럴수도 있죠. 그러니까 20대 여성은 전성, 연령 중에서 제일 높고 20대 남성은 제일 낮은걸로 나와요 젠더이슈가 있다는 건 분명하죠. 그렇지 않고서는 그런게 나올수 없죠. 취업의 어려움이라던가, 대학생활의 어려움이라던가 고용불안정 문제라던가, 이런것들은 남녀 공히 부딪히는 문제잖아요. 똑같은 정부고 똑같은 사회에서 살아가는데 20대 남녀가 그렇게까지 두 배 이상 지지율 차이가 난다는건 남녀가 각각 다르게 느끼는 어떤 것이 있기 때문인거지. 그게 무엇인지 몰라도. 그게 자연스러운것이라고 보고 그리고 저는 그걸 감수해야된다고 봐요. 정부가. 지금 국무위원을 뽑을 때 최소한 30퍼센트를 가지고 막, 뭐 가끔은 제가 볼 때 (한숨) 아닌데, 어쩔수 없어요 그거는. 여성들은 지금까지 큰 권한을 행사해본 경험이 별로 없기 때문에 훈련된 여성도 적은거에요. 처음엔 그런 현상이 나타날 수 밖에 없다고 보고요. 그 다음에 이제 양심적병역거부 대체복문제 이건 헌법재판소 결정에 따라서 하는건데 남자들은 다 군대에 가야되잖아요. 여자들은 안 가잖아요. 그럼 남자들 중에도 "나 양심상 군에 못가" 그러면 "쟤는 군에 안 가도 된단 말이야?" 그니까 기분이 안 좋은건 사실이겠죠. 그런 요소도 있을수 있고요 여러가지 요인때문에, 특히 최근에 미투 이런거 때문에 정부 대통령이나 국무위원들이 미투에 흐름이나 이런거를 타고가는 그런 입장을 취하고 있기 때문에 그런게 또 불편했을수도 있고요. 그렇죠 저는 일어날 수 있는 일이라고 생각하고요. 그정돕니다. 그정도인데 다만 감정이입을 해보면 정치라는것 또 대통령의 자리라는 거 이런거는 올바른 일을 하려고 하는 사람에게는 되게 힘든 자리에요. 왜냐하면 현대 대중민주주의는, 원래 민주주의가 그랬죠. 아테네에서부터. 또 로마도, 제정이 들어온 1세기 이전에 약 500년 가깝게 진행되었던 공화정 시대가 있었죠. 로마에서도. 뭐 민회에서 평민회의에서 호민관을 뽑고 귀족들의 민회인 원로원에서는 최고 정무관을 이렇게가 민주주의였는데요, 로마 공화정을 봐도 그렇고 아테네의 직접민주주의를 봐도 그렇고 민회, 500인의 선거인단 투표인단 이런 제도 봐도 그렇고 민주주의는 욕망과 욕망이 충돌하고 욕망이 욕망을 제어하는 시스템이에요. 옳은 것이 이기는 시스템이 아니에요. 다수의 욕망을 추종하고 다수의 욕망을 대변하는 쪽이 이기는 게임이에요. 그러다보니까 우리의 정치제도나 선거제도는 욕망이 욕망을 제어하고 욕망이 욕망과 충돌하는 그리고 그것을 정당화해놓은 시스템이에요. 그런데 대통령이나 대통령도 그렇고 정치를 하는 분들은 옳고 그름에 대한 자기의 기준을 가지고 있잖아요. 물론 모든 정치인이 그런건 아니에요. 그냥 욕망의 정치를 하는 사람도 있죠. 내가 어떤 자리에 가려는 욕망. 그리고 나는 이 욕망을 충족하기 위해서 다수의 대중이 분출하는 욕망을 다 받아들이고 편승하고 부추기는 사람도 있죠. 그런데 문재인 대통령은 자신의 욕망을 충족하기 위해서 다수의 욕망을 추종하는 스타일이 아니에요. 이게 어려움이죠. 저는 지지율이 떨어지는게 거기 있다고 봐요. 그래서 20대 남녀 성별로 지지율 격차가 크게 나는것, 저는 그거는 대통령이 이성적인 관점에서 정부의 권한을 행사하는 과정에서 빚어지는 일이라고 보고요 지금 20대들이 화를 내는 것을 이해할 수 있는 측면이 있어요. 저희 세대는 여자는 대학 안 가도 그만이다 그런 세대였지만 지금 20대들은 초등학교에서 선생님들이 거의다 여자선생님들이었고 말 잘듣는 여자애들을 선생님들이 얼마나 예뻐해주고 나대는 남자애들을 얼마나 차별했는지를 몸으로 겪으면서 초등학교를 다닌 세대에요. 사실 우리가 뭐 군대도 가야되고 여자들보다 특별히 뭐 받은것도 없는데, 아직 미혼이죠? 그렇찮아요. 자기 또래 집단에서 보면 여자들이 훨씬 유리하다고요. 자기들은 축구도 봐야되는데 여자들은 축구도 안 보지, 자기들은 롤도 해야되는데 여자들은 롤도 안 하고 공부하지. 모든 면에서 우리가 불리해. 선생님들은 학교에서 대놓고 여자애들만 끼고 놀고 남자애들은 굉장히 함부로 대하고 이렇게 자라온 아이들이 사회에서 성차별이 있는건 우리 책임이 아닌데, 오히려 우리는 자라면서 그런거 없이 오히려 역차별 받으면서 살아왔는데, 이러니까 정서적으로 볼 때 반발할 수 있다고 봐요 저는. 뭐든지 조정되어가는 과정에서 생긴 일이라고 보고요 다만 이제 최근에 지지율 하락에 대해서 오늘 뭐 데드크로스가 생겼다고? 갤럽 조사에서 못 한다가 잘 한다보다 1% 높게 나왔다고 완전 잔치가 벌어졌죠. 뭐 이거는 뭐 그전에도 몇차례 말씀드렸지만 예견된거에요. 지금 우리나라의 국회 선거시스템, 대통령 중심제 이렇게 보면 2천년 전에 로마 콜로세움에서 벌어진 검투 경기와 비슷해요. 진짜 잔인합니다. 박근혜 좋다고 올린게 언제에요, 5년 전이에요. 이명박 좋다고 올린게 언제에요, 10년 전이에요. 그렇게 누가 무슨 말을 해도 안 듣고 뽑았어요. 지금 다 감옥 가 있는데. 박근혜 대통령은 그래도 동정하는 분들이 좀 있어요. 왜냐하면 박근혜 대통령이 그렇게 된거는 나쁜 마음을 먹어서 그런게 아니라 능력이 없어서 그런거에요. 뭐 원래 그 자리에 가지 말고 사셨으면 나았을 분이 거기 가 있었기 때문에 벌어진 일이에요. 이명박 대통령은 머리가 좋은 사람이에요. 나쁜 의도를 가지고 뭔가를 했단 말이에요. 나쁘다고 말할 수 밖에 없는 어떤 의도를 가지고 국가를 수익 모델로 만든다던가 이렇게 했기 때문에 동정 여론도 없는거에요. 얼마나 잔혹합니까. 그 검투사들이 경쟁해서 한 쪽이 쓰러지면 크 처들잖아요 영화에서 많이 봤죠 글래디에이터 그러면 관중들이 우 하고 막 그러잖아요 그럴 때 다수의 관중들이 이렇게 하면 (엄지 손가락을 아래로 내리는) 황제가 딱 보고 있다가 욕망을 수용하는거죠. 자기 인기를 위해서. 죽여라. 그 게임과 비슷합니다. 거의. 욕망을 상대하는 것은 굉장히 힘든 일이에요. 더더군다나 모든 언론인들이 정치인들을 어떻게 보냐면 욕망의 화신으로 봐요. 그찮아요. 그 모든 정치인을 사실상 자기 욕망을 충족하기 위해서 대중의 욕망을 이용하는 자들로 봐요. 이런 조건에서 저는 문재인 대통령을 보면 거의 종교인 삘이 납니다. 제가 보기엔. 거의 신실한 가톨릭 신자의 자세 거의 성직자의 자세로 일하고 있어요. 그니까 그 불일치는 필연적이고요 벗어날 수 없어요. 이 굉장히 잔혹한 게임이거든요. 이 게임의 메커니즘을 모르고 그 자리에 간 게 아니에요. 저는 문재인 대통령이 떠밀려서 갔다고 봐요. 노무현 대통령은 본인이 하고 싶은게 많아서 가고 싶어서 가신 분이었지만 문재인 대통령은 떠밀려서 가신 분이에요. 또 그것을 자기 운명이라고 생각하고. 그리고 자기가 가지고 있는 어떤 모든 것을 다 동원해서 옳지 않다고 스스로 판단한 일은 안 하고. 최소한 옳지 않아라는 판단을 확실히 하기 어려운 일부터요 이건 옳지 않아 라고 하는 일까지 그 범위에 있는 일을 저는 그런 방식으로 하고 있다고 생각하거든요. 이거는 문재인 대통령을 좋아하는 분들은 많이 안타까우시겠지만, 이거는 현재의 정치 구조 대중민주주의의 본질적인 구조 이런 것들에 비추어 보면 언젠가는 일어나야 될 일이라고 생각해요. 그렇다고 해서 제 1 야당 지지율이 오르는 것도 아니잖아요. 그러니까 20대 들의 남자 청년들이 문재인 대통령 잘못하고 있어 답했다고 해서 자유한국당 잘하고 있어 이것도 아니에요. 그렇게 되어 있는거라서 이 잔혹하기 짝이 없는 검투 경기의 메커니즘이 작동되고 있다고 보고요. 뭐 그 대중들의 욕망을 무제한적이고 파괴적인 형태로 표출시키고 있는게 언론이죠. 우리나라의 주류 언론 비주류 언론 말할것도 없이 언론인들이 보여주고 있는 반지성주의 이런 것들이 어마어마 합니다. 무서워요. 뭐 정말무지막지 합니다. 신문 보도를 보고 있으면 끔찍해요. 지금 문정부에 대해서만 그런게 아니고요 그 이전에 탄핵 사태때 박근혜 대통령쪽이 한 거 뭐 이명박 대통령 그 한거 다 마찬가지입니다. 모든 정치인을 욕망의 화신으로 간주하고 기사를 쓰기 때문에 하는거에요. 이런것도 우리나라만 그런게 아니고요 언론의 자유가 있는 모든 시대에 다 그랬어요. 그래서 이런것들을 보다보면 확실히 호모사피엔스는 구제불능이구나 그런 생각도 들지만 동시에 또 똑같은 사람들이 때로는 이명박 박근혜 같은 분들을 뽑았다가 그 전에는 김대중 노무현 최근에는 문재인 대통령 같은 분들을 뽑기도 하잖아요. 미국도 오바마 대통령을 뽑았다가 똑같은 미국 국민들이 트럼프 대통령을 뽑잖아요. 대중민주주의라는게 원래 그런거에요. 그래서 저는 우리나라 국민들이 정치적으로 어떤 선택을 해도 전혀 놀랍지 않습니다. 이게 원래 그런것이다. 어떤 사람들은 자유한국당이 다시는 집권 못 할거다라고 이야기하지만 절대 그렇지 않습니다. 이 공격적이고 파괴적이고 자기중심적인 욕망을 추동하는 일로 자신의 욕망을 충족하려는 정치집단이거든요 거기가. 저는 이것을 순식간에 느꼈어요. 저는 뭐 그래도 안 놀랄겁니다. 너무 걱정은 마시고요. 원래 이런 것이다. -답변 끝- 민주주의의 원칙이나 이런 담론에 대해서는 공감하지만 문제가 된 20대 남성들의 지지율에 대한 평가를 보면 [20대 남성들이 그렇게 반응하는 것도 이해 못할 일이 아니다. 하지만 이것은 올바른 사회로 가기 위해서 발생하는 어쩔수 없는 희생이다.] 라고 판단하고 있는걸 느낄 수 있습니다. 사실 축구니 롤이니 하는게 문제가 아니고 그보다 근본적으로 숨어있는 이 생각이 문제고요. 더군다나 이들이 전제하고 있는 올바른 사회의 모습에 대해서도 공감을 못 하겠는데 그 결과 발생하는 희생도 감당하라는건 받아들일 수 없는 조건이구요. 문재인 대통령이 유시민이 평가한 바와 같이 본인의 신념에 의해 행동하는 것에 대해서도 동의하는데 저만 그렇게 생각하는 것이 아니라 지근거리에서 바라본 사람이 그렇게 평가할 정도면 이 문제에 대해서는 더욱 해결할 방법이 없겠다는 생각을 합니다.
