은가누-퓨리 전을 아직 보진 않았고, 넷상에서 돌아다니는 평가만 보았지만 이 경기 결과가 만들어 낼 충격파는 단순히 한 경기에 머무르지 않을 것이다. 그것은 복싱/UFC 비즈니스에 익숙할수록 당연한 명제이고 또한 생각보다 많은 이들이 잘 모르고 있는 명제이기도 하다. 왜냐하면 같은 투기 종목이라는 공통점을 제외하고 복싱과 UFC는 비즈니스 면에서 완벽히 상극이며, 은가누-퓨리 전으로 인해 그 두 닫힌 계(closed system)은 연결될 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 1. 태초에 협회가 있었다. 먼저 복싱에 대해 이야기해 보자. 맨주먹으로 싸우던 베어 너클 복싱에서 1865년 퀸즈베리 룰이 도입되면서 처음으로 우리가 알고 있는 근대적인 복싱이 시작되었다. 글러브, 링 등의 개념이 도입되었고, 1900년대 초반 체급이라는 개념이 도입됨에 따라, 몸무게가 비슷한 선수들끼리 서로 글러브를 끼고 3분 1라운드씩 경기를 하는 기본적인 개념이 태동한다. 조 루이스와 막스 슈멜링의 경기는 나치스와 미국의 대리전이라는 명성을 가졌고, 슈거 레이 로빈슨은 뉴욕의 한 블록을 통째로 가졌다는 말까지 돌았다. 무하마드 알리는 시대정신의 투사였고, 알리와 프레이져, 포먼의 경기는 미국뿐만 아니라 콩고 민주공화국, 필리핀 등 수많은 전세계의 장소에서 동시에 벌어졌다. 복싱의 전통은 UFC와 비교했을 때 압도적이고, 단순한 스포츠 경기가 가졌던 위상 또한 UFC와 비교될 수 없다. 그러나 지금 복싱은 확연하게 몰락했으며, UFC는 떠오르는 해가 되었다. 어떻게 그것이 가능한가. 첫 번째 요인은 협회 때문이라는 것이다. 더 정확히는 수많은 협회가 너무 난립했다는 것이다. 그렇다고 협회가 필요가 없다는 것은 아니다. 이런 세계화가 된 스포츠의 경우, 협회(council, 복싱에서는 sanctioning body라는 표현을 주로 사용함)의 존재가 필수적이다. 한 번 다음과 같은 예를 생각해 보자. 1) 한국에서 김광선과 마이크 카바할이 경기를 치뤘고, 카바할이 승리했다고 하자. 그리고 당시 랭킹이 더 높았던 유명우가 카바할과의 경기를 거부했다고 하자. 그렇다면 주니어플라이급 선수들의 랭킹은 어떻게 매겨져야 하는가? 2) 복싱 변방에 가까운 케냐에서 만약에 200전 무패의 복서가 있다고 신고되었다고 하자. 그는 해당 체급에서 몇 위가 되어야 하는가? 전 세계적으로 10만 명이 넘는 복서들이 등록되어 있고 동시에 활동하며, 그 중 누군가는 챔피언이며 누군가는 챔피언 도전전에 속할 기회를 얻는다. 어떻게 하면 랭킹을 공정하게 매길 것이며 누구에게 그 기회를 주어야 하는가? 이는 개인 스포츠인 복싱의 특성상 다른 개인 스포츠와도 비교를 불허하는 복잡함이다. 예를 들어 테니스는 1년에 ATP 투어 마스터즈 시리즈, 그랜드슬램 대회 등의 대회를 1년 동안 개최하며 해당 토너먼트에서 얻은 성적으로 포인트를 합산하여 랭킹을 선정한다. 허나 복싱과 비교하면 복싱에서는 정기적으로 개최되는 토너먼트라는 것이 없으며, 두 번째로 체급이 존재한다. 축구와 비교해 보면 어떨까. 축구는 복싱에 비견될 만한 세계화 시스템을 가지고 있고, 여러 리그들을 동시에 운영함과 동시에 리그들 사이의 경기(챔스, 유로파 등)를 주관한다. 다만 여기에서는 대륙을 뛰어넘어 경기하는 것이 어렵다는 한계점이 있고, 한 클럽은 평가받을 수 있어도 해당 클럽의 선수들 각각을 평가할 수 없다는 한계점이 있다. 하지만 축구의 아이디어 자체, 각 지역별로 일종의 하위 리그가 존재하고 리그들의 피라미드를 만들어서 리그에서 좋은 성적을 받은 선수를 위로 올린다는 것 자체는 충분히 복싱에서도 적용할 만 하다. 미국이나 유럽에 국한되어 있던 것을 넘어서 세계화가 될 수록 복싱은 세계 챔피언까지 이어지는 일련의 피라미드를 만들었다. 예를 들어 한국 복서가 세계 챔피언이 될 만한 기량이 있다면, 먼저 한국 챔피언이 된 다음 동양(OPBF) 타이틀을 먹고, 그 다음으로 인테림 세계 챔피언을 먹은 다음 복싱의 챔피언스리그라 할 수 있는 미국시장으로 진출하는 식이다. 미국 시장에서 몇몇 컨텐더들을 상대로 승리하게 되면 협회에 의해 챔피언의 방어전 상대로 지명되게 되고 그 경기에서 승리한다면 세계 챔피언 자리에 오른다. 그래서 사실 복서들의 전적으로는 절대 복서의 평가가 불가능하다. 제일 중요한 것은 이 선수가 세계무대에서 어느 정도 성과를 거두었는가. 즉, 미국 시장에서 어느 정도 경기를 했는가가 중요하다. 훌리오 세자르 차베스는 89연승을 기록한 전무후무한 복서였지만, 56연승까지는 오로지 멕시코에서만 활동했었다. 반대로 아마추어에서 396승 1패의 기록을 쌓았던 바실 로마첸코는 프로 전향 2전째만에 세계 챔피언전을 치뤘는데, 그렇다면 로마첸코의 20전은 대부분이 세계 챔피언들을 상대로 벌인 경기라는 뜻이다. 여기서 생각해 볼 만한 점은, 그럼에도 불구하고 빅 리그에서 경기를 잡는 것은 철저히 선수와 선수의 프로모터에 달려 있다는 것이다. 두 번째로 랭킹 산정에 대해서도 이 선수가 챔피언에 걸맞는, 혹은 도전할 만한 자격이 있는지 아닌지 보장할 어떤 시스템도 없다는 것이다. 즉 선수의 랭킹은 오로지 협회의 주관적인 관점에 의해서만 평가받는다는 것이다. 한국 시장이 몰락한 후, 한국에서 세계를 두드렸던 선수들(지인진, 김지훈 등)을 보자. 지인진은 에릭 모랄레스와 세계 챔피언전 기회를 잡았지만, 김지훈은 그렇지 못했다. 볼케이노라는 링 네임과 스타일이 결코 도전자격에 부족함이 없었음에도 계속해서 컨텐더들만을 상대하다가 연패하고 다시는 기회를 잡지 못했다. 협회의 모든 랭킹은 주관적이고, 복싱 변방국에서 태어난 복서는 기회를 받기 어려우며, 기회의 여부는 관객들을 많이 불러모을 수 있는 선수들이 좋은 프로모터와 만났을 때 시작된다. 여기서 복싱 협회의 몰락은 배태되었을지도 모른다. 2. 복싱 협회의 분화와 몰락 태초에는 세계 복싱 협회라는 것이 1개밖에 없었다. 즉, 랭킹도 1개, 복싱 챔피언 타이틀 역시 1개였다는 뜻이다. 때문에 8개의 체급 중 3개 체급을 제패했던 헨리 암스트롱이 파퀴아오 등장 이전 최고의 P4P 파이터로 평가받는 것이며, 복싱 역사에서 가장 경쟁이 치열한 체급인 웰터급과 미들급 양쪽에서 모두 올 타임 1위를 찍은 슈거 레이 로빈슨이 역대 최고의 복서가 된 이유이기도 하다. 무하마드 알리와 조지 포먼이 헤비급 타이틀을 두고 킨샤샤에서 격돌했을 때, 헤비급 챔피언의 자리는 오직 1개였으며 복싱의 헤비급 챔피언은 곧 세계에서 가장 강한 사나이와 동의어였다. 그러나 이것은 현재 어떻게 바뀌었을까? 기존 복싱 협회의 무능을 폭로하고, 새로 출범한 신규 협회들이 시작되면서 점차 한 체급의 챔피언 벨트 개수는 1개가 아니게 되었다. 처음으로 알리-스핑크스 전부터 WBC, WBA가 분화되기 시작하면서 이제는 IBF, WBO까지 총 4개의 메이저 협회가 복싱 챔피언의 벨트를 수여하고 있다. 체급은 어떻고? 예전 8개 체급이었던 것이 이제는 17개 체급이 되었다. 한 마디로 메이저 타이틀로만 한정해도, 현재 '세계 챔피언'이라고 부를 수 있는 사람이 68명이나 된다는 것이다. 그걸로 끝이냐? 메이웨더, 파퀴아오는 양쪽 모두 너무 커다란 스타였고 둘은 겨우 40m으로 경기를 할 생각이 없었다. 양측간의 치열한 기싸움 끝에 경기는 성사되기까지 그 둘이 전성기를 지날 때까지 6년을 끌었고, 둘은 각각 250m/150m을 벌였지만 남은 것은 폐허뿐인 돈잔치였다. 복싱에서 세계챔피언은 결코 선수들을 움직이게 하는 동력원이 아니다. 그것은 그저 악세사리에 불과하고, 변방국에게 훨씬 박한 랭킹에 불과하다. 이런 시스템 아래서 골로프킨, 윙키 라이트 같은 무명의 저니맨들은 세계 챔피언 자리를 얻기까지 수도 없는 인고의 세월을 겪었다. 결과적으로 무패 선수들은 넘쳐나지만 재미있는 경기도 없고, 무명의 실력자들은 타이틀전 기회조차 받지 못한 채 어딘가에서 계속 사라지고 있다. 3. UFC, 그리고 복싱 UFC가 복싱과 다른 것은 규칙만이 아니다. UFC는 핑거글러브, 옥타곤 따위보다 훨씬 다른 체제를 가지고 있다. UFC에서는 오로지 데이나 화이트라는 단일 프로모터를 갖고 있고, 단일 랭킹을 가진다. 또한 경기 역시 선택권이 없다. 대중이 보고 싶다면, 그 경기는 질질 끌지 않고 바로 이뤄진다. 때문에 무패 선수는 없지만 대중들은 그에 개의치 않는다. 한 체급에서의 최강자가 과감하게 월장을 해서 패배하더라도 상품 가치가 훼손되지 않는다. 선수들의 거부권이 없고, 선수들의 이해관계를 조정할 필요가 없기 때문에 역설적으로 리그는 성장했다. 같은 컴뱃 스포츠는 동일한 관중 층을 공유할 수밖에 없다. 역사와 전통에 기대어 훨씬 거대한 수입 규모를 가졌지만 재미있는 경기가 없는 복싱, 반대로 가격도 싼 데다가 한 PPV에 원하는 경기를 꽉꽉 채워넣는 UFC. 승자는 명확하고 성장률도 명확하다. 하빕 누르마고메도프의 출신지를 보고 깜짝 놀란 적이 있다. 다게스탄이라니. 총 인구 3백만의 소국에 대부분이 이슬람계인 이 국가 출신 선수는 결코 복싱에서 진지하게 받아주지 않았을 것이기 때문이다. 비슷하게 카자흐스탄 출신의 게나디 골로프킨과 올렉산드르 우식을 보자. 이 두 선수는 뛰어난 아마추어 전적에도 불구하고 세계 챔피언 기회를 받기까지 30전이 넘게 걸렸다. 하지만 UFC는 달랐고, 민족과 국가에 에 기대지 않는 마케팅을 한다. 히스패닉 선수들을 밀어줄 필요도, 아프로 아메리칸을 밀어줄 필요도 없다. 경기의 흥행은 화이트가 만드니까. 그러나 이 모든 성장은 UFC에겐 좋지만 선수들에게는 재앙이었다. PPV 수입에서 선수들은 많은 양을 가져가지 못하고, 정찬성/최두호처럼 극적인 승리를 거둘 때에야 화이트의 선심처럼 추가 보너스를 받는다. 프로모터 수가 30명이 넘는 복싱에서는 최대한 대전료를 자기의 선수에게 유리하게 협상하고자 하지만, 여기서는 불가능하기 때문이다. 화이트는 UFC의 성공을 자신의 성공으로 만들었고, 선수들에게는 거의 최저임금을 지불하는 것이나 마찬가지다. 그 상황을 절실하게 보여준 것이 메이웨더-맥그리거 경기라 할 수 있다. 코너 맥그리거는 명실공히 지금까지 UFC가 배출한 최고의 스타다. 컴뱃 스포츠에서 MMA 판도를 바꿔 놓은 최고의 선수이며, 트래쉬 토크와 그의 스타일은 그를 역대 최고의 흥행력을 가진 선수로 만들어주었다. 그러나 그가 UFC에서 벌어들인 돈은? 알바레즈 전에서 4억원을 벌었고, 알도전에서 30억을 벌었다. 메이웨더와 복싱 서커스 매치를 하면서 벌어들인 돈은? 지금까지 수입을 합친 것을 훨씬 상회하는 1000억이다. 메이웨더-맥그리거의 경기는 분명히 수많은 UFC 선수들에게 영감을 줬을 것이 분명하다. 망해가는 스포츠에 뛰어든다 해도, 자신의 노예계약을 훨씬 상회하는 돈을 월급날로 벌어들일 수 있다면 선수들은 기꺼이 패배를 감수할 터다. 그 흐름에 편승한 것이 은가누였고, 그는 UFC를 탈퇴하면서까지 복싱계에 대한 진출을 모색했다. 화이트는 은가누를 저주했지만, 메이웨더-맥그리거 따위와는 비교되지 못할 재밌는 경기를 연출했다.
