 1. 풋워크(footwork) 개론 복싱에서 풋워크(footwork), 즉 스텝이란 복싱에서 거의 전부라고 말해도 과언이 아닙니다. 복싱에서는 흥미롭게도 쌍방향의 원칙이 적용되지 않습니다. 즉 자신은 타격이 가능하지만 상대는 타격이 불가능한 시간과 공간이 있다는 얘기죠. 그리고 풋워크는 바로 그 중에서 공간을 만드는 가장 중요한 도구입니다. 역사에 남은 뛰어난 복서들은 풋워크의 가능성을 무궁무진하게 탐구해 왔고, 저마다의 명장면을 남겼습니다. -제시 조 왈콧(Jersey Joe Walcott)의 흡사 문워크같은 스텝. -로베르토 듀란(Roberto Duran)은 위대한 인파이터이면서도 스텝 활용에 있어 천부적이었다. 위 장면에서 그는 단 한 번의 위빙과 서클링을 통해 단숨에 링줄에 몰려 있는 불리한 상황을 유리한 상황으로 전환한다. -현 시대의 정점, 바실 로마첸코(Vasyl Lomachenko). 그는 언제나 풋워크를 통해 자신만이 때릴 수 있는 공간을 먼저 점유하고, 그 뒤 여유롭게 펀치를 전달한다. 상대는 사각에서 날아오는 펀치를 그저 맞는 것 외에 다른 도리가 없다. 2. 스텝의 기본 원칙 스텝의 기본 원칙은 크게 세 가지가 있습니다. 1) 무게중심은 (상체가 아닌) 하체에 둔다. 초심자들이 가장 많이 하는 실수입니다. 맨 처음 스텝을 배운 초심자들은 거의 예외 없이 상체는 크게 움직이지 않은 채 하체만 왔다 갔다 합니다. 이는 무게중심이 상체에 있기 때문으로, 가벼운 하체에 비해 무거운 상체가 따라오지 못하는 현상입니다. 하지만 스텝을 통해 이동하고 나서도 우리는 항상 펀치를 칠 수 있는 자세를 유지해야 합니다. 즉 상하체가 동시에 움직여야 하는 것입니다.  이는 간단한 추와 실의 비유를 통해 이해할 수 있습니다. 만약 추를 잡고 실을 흔든다면, 추는 크게 움직이지 않은 채 실만 나풀거릴 것입니다. 하지만 추가 밑에 있을 때 실을 흔든다면, 둘은 동시에 움직입니다. 이는 하체가 움직일 때 상체가 동시에 따라가기 위해서는 추(무게중심)가 밑에 있어야 한다는 것을 의미합니다. 초심자들은 거의 대부분 중심이 높습니다. 그들이 중심을 낮추지 못하는 이유는 아직 익숙하지 않아서도 있지만 상체에 과도한 긴장을 하고 있기 때문입니다. 가드를 지나치게 높게 들고 있으면 당연히 하체에 체중이 가지 않습니다. 따라서 중심이 낮아지지 않는다면, 상체에 힘을 빼는 연습을 해야 합니다. 펀치가 약해질까 하는 생각은 하지 않아도 됩니다. 어차피 펀치는 상체의 힘으로 치는 것이 아니기 때문입니다. 그래도 어렵다면 차라리 두 손을 내리고 뒷짐을 진 채 무릎을 굽히고 스텝 연습을 하십시오. 이는 극단적이지만 중심을 아예 밑으로 내려줍니다. 그만큼 상하체가 같이 가지 않는다면 스텝은 무용지물입니다. 또한 중심을 낮추는 데 가장 좋은 훈련은 줄넘기입니다. 줄넘기를 하다 보면, 줄넘기를 오래 하기 위해서는 상체에 힘을 주는 것이 아니라 하체로 무게중심을 낮추고, 두 발로 깡총깡총 뛰지 않으면서 발을 한발씩 교차로 살짝살짝 들어줘야 한다는 사실을 알게 됩니다. 웜업(warm up)의 의미도 있습니다만, 그 수많은 웜업 트레이닝 중 줄넘기가 복싱을 대표하게 된 이유는 이런 이유가 있습니다. 2) 가려는 방향의 반대 발로 민다. 스텝의 두 번째 원칙은 가려는 방향의 반대 방향으로 미는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 당기기보다 밀기가 훨씬 힘을 효율적으로, 그리고 폭발적으로 낼 수 있기 때문입니다. 우리는 앞서 우리의 발이 어떻게 위치하는지를 배웠습니다. 우리의 척추를 원점으로 하여, 우리의 왼발은 2사분면에, 우리의 오른발은 4사분면에 위치하고 있습니다. 만약 앞으로 가고 싶다면 우리는 뒷발로 밀면서 앞으로 나가야 하고, 뒤로 가고 싶다면 앞발로 차면서 뒤로 빠져야 합니다. 왼쪽으로 가고 싶다면 오른발로(즉 왼쪽의 반대 발로)차면서 이동하고 오른쪽으로 가고 싶다면 왼발로 차면서 이동합니다. 이는 간단하고, 몸으로 체험하기도 쉽습니다. 하지만 이걸 이렇게 구구절절하게 설명하는 이유는, 나중에 스텝에 펀치를 얹을 때, 펀치의 체중이동과 스텝의 체중이동을 어떻게 일치시킬 것인가가 중요해지기 때문입니다. 이래서 누군가는 복싱을 대지를 발로 차는 무술이라고도 하는 것입니다. 그리고 물론 당연하게도, 당연히 발의 앞꿈치로 밀어야 합니다. 뒷꿈치는 좋지 않습니다. 그래서 먼저 스텝을 배우면 가장 먼저 아프기 시작하고, 물집이 생기는 곳은 바로 엄지발가락 밑의 볼(ball)부분입니다. 3) 가려는 방향의 발을 먼저 내딛고, 반대 발을 끌어당긴다(drag) 이는 보통 아마추어 스타일의 복싱에서는 크게 느껴지지 않습니다. 왜냐하면 짧은 라운드 수로 인해 아마추어 복싱은 두 발을 동시에 움직이기 때문입니다. 하지만 프로 스타일에서는 아마추어 복싱 스텝을 내내 밟을 수가 없습니다. 그래서 소위 프로 스타일 스텝[걷는 스텝]이 생겨납니다. 걷는 스텝에서는 가려는 방향의 반대 발로 밀지만 먼저 발을 떼어 내딛는 발은 가려는 방향의 발입니다. 그 다음 벌어진 발 간격을 다시 끌어당겨 조정합니다. 그래서 발 간격은 넓어졌다→돌아왔다→넓어졌다→돌아왔다의 흐름을 갖지, 좁아졌다→돌아왔다→좁아졌다→돌아왔다의 흐름으로 가지 않습니다. 예외라면 두 발을 교차하는 스위치(switch)나, 아예 오른발을 왼발 앞으로 뻗는 풋 시프팅(foot shifting)정도만이 있을 뿐입니다. 이상의 세 가지 원칙을 다 숙지한 다음 숙련된 조교의 시범을 보겠습니다. 여기서는 하체가 상체를 이끌고 있는가, 반대발로 밀고 있는가, 가려는 방향의 발을 먼저 움직이고 있는가에 유의하여 봐주시기 바랍니다. 6분부터 시작합니다. 이를 통해 우리는 기본 스텝들, 전진, 후진, 좌, 우의 이동을 배울 수 있습니다. 물론 전진과 후진만 죽어라 연습하게 됩니다만. 추가적인 기본 스텝 연습으로, 두 번 연속으로 전진하는 연습, 세 번 연속으로 전진하는 연습, 두 번 연속으로 후진하는 연습, 세 번 연속으로 후진하는 연습 등이 요구됩니다. 이를 통해 우리는 들어가기 위해서, 혹은 상대방을 뿌리치기 위해서는 체중을 계속해서 같은 발에 둬야 함을 알게 됩니다. 연속해서 스텝을 밟아야 하니까요.  이상이 기본 스텝의 마무리입니다. 보통 연습하는 것은 위 그림에서 45 Degree Stepping에서의 10시, 5시 방향 스텝이며, Lateral Stepping에서는 걷는 스텝으로 연습하면 되겠습니다. 3. 고급 스텝 : 서클링, 스위치, etc 1) 서클링(circling) 기본 스텝에서 우리는 전진 스텝, 백스텝을 위주로 배우기 때문에 정사각형의 링에 올라가도 사실 외나무다리에 있는 것과 크게 다르지 않습니다. 그러나 서클링을 배우는 순간부터 링은 드디어 선의 세계에서 면의 세계로, 1차원에서 2차원으로 확장됩니다. 서클링은 피보팅(pivoting)이라고도 하고도 하고 오소독스 기준으로 왼발을 축으로 해서 상대방을 두고 빙글빙글 도는 움직임입니다. 농구의 피벗과 큰 차이가 없어서 고급 스텝들 중에서는 가장 배우기 편한 것이기도 합니다. 그런데 왜 기본 스텝이 아닌가 하면 서클링에 얹을 펀치를 배우려면 잽 말고는 레프트 훅까지 가야 하기 때문입니다. 하지만 초심자에게는 링을 넓게 쓰는 회피기술로서 충분한 의미가 있습니다. 서클링을 하기 위해서는 컴퍼스처럼 왼발을 축으로 하여 빙글빙글 돌면 됩니다. 그리고 위에서 말한 원칙은 여기서도 적용됩니다. 즉 우리가 반시계 방향으로 돌고자 할 경우에는 뒷발에 힘을 주고 밉니다. 반대로 우리가 시계 방향으로 돌고자 할 때는 앞발로 밀어야 합니다.  해 보시면 알겠지만 오른손잡이는 반시계로 도는 게 훨씬 쉽습니다. 왜일까요? 서클링에서는 무게중심을 원의 바깥에 두어야 하기 때문입니다. 즉 뒷발이죠. 만약에 중심을 앞에 두고 돈다면, 브레이크가 쉽게 걸리지 않을 겁니다. 반면 뒷발에 중심을 두고 반시계 방향으로 돈다면 매우 안정적입니다. 반면 시계 방향으로 돌기 위해서는 앞발에 힘을 주어야 하는데, 앞발로 밀면서 동시에 앞발에는 체중을 적게 두는 것이 어렵습니다. 그래서 보통 빙글빙글 돌 때도 오소독스는 반시계 방향으로 도는 것입니다. 들어오는 상대를 피벗으로 회피하면서, 거기에 레프트 훅을 건다면 그것은 마치 한 명의 투우사가 맹렬히 돌진하는 황소를 유유히 피하면서 우아하게 창을 꽂는 것처럼 보입니다. 이런 아름다운 공격을 복싱에서는 체크 훅(check hook)이라고 부릅니다. 체육관에서는 간단하게 "돌려!"라고 말하구요.  -복싱 역사에서 가장 유명한 체크 훅, 플로이드 메이웨더가 경기장에 모인 영연방 관중들을 입다물게 만든 순간.  -위에서 보면 더 아름답다. 정확히는 뒷발로 차면서 앞발은 뺐으니 피봇은 아니지만. 2) 스위치(switch) 스위치 스텝이 굳이 다룰 만큼 중요한가라는 생각도 들지만, 고급 스텝이니 한 번 말해 보자면 스위치 스텝은 양 발을 교차하는 것입니다. 오소독스와 사우스포 스탠스를 동시에 잘 다룰 줄 아는 유니크한 복서들은 경기 중간에 스위치를 통해 오소독스에서 사우스포로, 다시 사우스포에서 오소독스로 전환하면서 상대에게 혼란을 이끌어냅니다. 현 시대의 테렌스 크로포드(Terence Crawford)가 가장 유명하고, 한 때 미구엘 코토(Miguel Angel Cotto)가 잠깐잠깐 써먹었습니다. 하지만 생활체육 레벨에서 양 스탠스를 고루 잘 한다는 것은 거의 불가능에 가깝고, 저희가 사용할 수 있는 것들을 나열해 본다면, 저는 주로 시계 방향으로 빠져나갈 때 사용합니다. 뒷발을 반시계 방향으로 빼면서, 스탠스가 유지되지 않았을 때 두 발을 교차하며 스위치 하고 한 쪽으로 걸어나갑니다. 뭔가 영상으로 보면 빠른데 설명을 하려니 어렵군요. 기예르모 리곤도(Guillermo Rigondeaux)가 스파링에서 보여준 게 가장 정확합니다. 1분 17초 언저리에서 보시면 됩니다. (노란색 옷) 스위치의 두 번째 쓰임새는 빠른 회피입니다. 백스텝을 밟는 것보다 왼발을 차면서 오른발 뒤로 빼면 순간적으로 사우스포 스탠스가 되는데, 그 다음 다시 오른발을 차며 왼발 뒤로 보내면 가장 빠르게 백스텝을 밟는 것보다 더 효과적으로 물러나는 움직임이 됩니다. 스위치를 빠르게 많이 하면 셔플 스텝이 되는데 무하마드 알리(Muhammad Ali)가 그의 성명절기인 알리 셔플(Ali Shuffle)로 유명했습니다. 하지만 현재는, 그리고 당대에도 쇼맨십에 가까워서 이곳에서는 다루지 않겠습니다.  -무하마드 알리가 스포츠 커멘테이터 하워드 코셀 앞에서 선보이는 알리 셔플.  보통은 이렇게 쇼맨십에 가깝다. 무하마드 알리와 클리블랜드 윌리엄스의 경기에서는 자주 쓰긴 하지만 글쎄... 그 외에 아예 뒷발을 앞으로 뻗는 풋 시프팅이 있는데, 이는 현대 복싱에서는 많이 나오지 않는 형태라서 일단 제외하겠습니다. 알고 싶으신 분들은 Youtube에서 Gennady Golovkin The Lost Art Of Shifting이라는 동영상을 참고하십시오. https://youtu.be/vijD09_O8ek 4. 트레이닝(Training) 스텝 훈련을 위한 트레이닝들은 Youtube에서 Boxing Footwork Drill 같은 것을 검색하면 많이 나오긴 하는데 풋볼에서 많이 쓰는 콘(con) 같은 것들을 가져다 놔서 한국 체육관에서는 사실 도움이 별로 되지 않습니다. 한국에서 할 만한 훈련은 제 생각에 세 가지 정도 있는 것 같습니다. 1) 줄넘기 위에서 언급했지만, 줄넘기는 중심을 낮추는 데 매우 좋을 뿐만 아니라 몸을 풀어주는 웜업으로 손색이 없습니다. 반드시 준비운동 뒤에 3라운드 정도는 줄넘기를 해 주는 게 좋습니다. 줄넘기는 양발을 같이 하는 것이 아니고, 왼발→왼발→오른발→오른발→왼발→왼발→오른발→... 식으로 진행하는 것이 좋습니다. 첫째로 이렇게 하게 되면 박자감이 생겨 줄넘기를 하다가 잘 걸리게 되지 않습니다. 둘째로 발이 피로해지지 않고 왼발에서 오른발로 체중을 이동시키는 감각을 알게 됩니다. 또한 피로해지지 않기 위해서는 팔에는 힘을 빼고 손목만으로 살짝살짝 돌리는 게 좋으며 좀 긴 게 편합니다. 또한 바닥을 점프하는 것이 아니라 줄로 바닥을 쓸고 지나가는데 살짝살짝 들어 준다는 느낌으로 하면 잘 걸리지 않습니다. 2) 샌드백 밀기 원래 샌드백은 펀치를 때려도 흔들리지 않게 치면 잘 친다고 합니다. 하지만 여기서는 샌드백을 펀치가 아닌, 스텝 연습용으로 사용하겠습니다. 샌드백을 중심에서 멀리 떨어트린 다음 놓아 진자운동을 하게 한 다음, 샌드백을 상대방이라고 생각하고 샌드백이 멀어질 때는 스텝으로 쫓아가고, 샌드백이 다시 다가올 때면 백스텝으로 빠지십시오. 또한 샌드백이 가까이 올 때 피봇으로 돌려 보기도 하고, 다시 펀치를 때려 봐도 됩니다. 샌드백을 상대방 삼아서 계속해서 따라가고 빠지는 연습을 하다 보면 어느덧 스텝이 발에 익숙해지는 것을 발견할 것입니다. 3) 래더 드릴(ladder drill) 주로 풋볼 주법을 연습할 때 쓰는 것이지만, 한국에서 래더 드릴의 최대 장점은 래더가 필요없다는 것입니다. 실내 체육관에는 장판이 있어서 간격 구분이 편합니다. 래더 드릴에서 할 수 있는 스텝은 많으니 연습하는 것을 추천합니다.  이 모든 트레이닝들은 적절한 운동자극을 발에 줌으로써 스텝이 발에 익도록 하는 것입니다. 연습을 하면서도 계속해서 스텝의 세 가지 원칙들을 기억해야 합니다. 5. 유의할 점과 Q&A Q) 스텝을 밟을 때 미끄럽습니다 A) 적절한 신발을 신으세요. 적당히 미끄럽지 않으면 스텝을 밟을 때 무리가 많이 가지만, 너무 미끄러우면 브레이크로 인해 쉽게 피로해집니다. 링의 재질과 체육관 바닥의 재질은 다릅니다. 링은 더 접지력이 좋기 때문에 미끄러운 복싱화를 신어도 좋지만, 장판에서는 힘들 수도 있습니다(청소를 안 하는 체육관이면 끈적거려서 괜찮음). 링에서는 복싱화를, 장판에서는 접지력이 좋은 운동화를 신으세요. Q) 스텝을 좀만 밟아도 종아리가 아픕니다. A) 아직 익숙하지 않아서 그럴 수도 있고, 너무 스텝을 크게 밟고 있을 수도 있습니다. 스텝을 잔스텝으로 밟으세요. 살짝만 움직이면 그만큼 힘도 적게 듭니다. 대부분이 스텝을 크게 밟는 경우입니다. 그리고 운동이 끝났을 때는 충분히 스트레칭을 해 줌으로써 긴장을 풀 수 있습니다. 쥐가 난다면 물을 많이 드시구요. 또한 유의할 점으로는 전진 스텝, 백스텝이 편하다고 계속 하고 있으면 어느 샌가 양발이 45도가 아니라 180도 일직선이 되어 있을 겁니다. 자연스러운 현상입니다. 원래 180도가 앞 뒤로 왔다갔다 하기에는 가장 편하니까요. 하지만 잘못된 자세입니다. 왜냐하면 나중에 펀치를 칠 때 힘을 싣을 수 없거든요. 꾸준히 내 뒷발이 왔다갔다 할 때마다 슬금슬금 왼쪽으로 밀려나지는 않는지 확인합시다. 달성과제 : 자기가 샌드백을 치는 영상을 핸드폰으로 촬영한 뒤, 상하체가 같이 움직이고 있는지 체크하세요. 달성과제 : 스파링 할 때, 혹은 메소드 복싱(method boxing)[매스]을 할 때 반시계 방향으로 계속해서 돌아 보세요. 그들은 당신을 맞출 수 없습니다. 링은 선이 아니라 면이라는 사실을 항상 기억하세요. 다음 글은 잽, 스트레이트입니다.
