* 일전에 다른 곳에 쓴 글을 다듬어서 올립니다. 이번 시즌은 메시에게 있어 부활의 시즌이었습니다. 뭐 메시가 언제는 죽었습니까마는, 15-16과 16-17에 비해 명백히 좋은 기량을 보였죠. 유럽의 유력 스포츠 언론들의 연합 조직인 ESM에서는 매달 UEFA에서 뛰는 선수들을 대상으로 월별 베스트를 선정하는데, 메시는 지난해 9월부터 올해 5월까지 9개월 간의 레이스에서 11월 단 한 달만을 제외하고 모두 베스트로 선정되었습니다. 이것은 메시 개인에게는 최고 시즌이라 평가받는 11-12 이후 최다 수상 기록입니다. 이번 시즌 메시보다 많은 선정된 것은 전월 선정자인 KDB밖에 없지요. 하지만 그럼에도 메시가 가진 한계도 여럿 노출된 시즌입니다. 특히 AS 로마를 UCL 8강에서 만났을 때, 1차전에서 거둔 4-1의 선행 스코어를 이점으로 안고서도 2차전에서 역전패를 당하면서 평판이 크게 깎였죠. 물론 단순히 UCL 떨어졌으니 존못이라는 식의 평가는 부당한 겁니다. 결과만 갖고 이야기하는 건 경기 안 보고도 할 수 있으니까요. 그보다는 구체적으로 메시가 갖고 있는 기량적인 특성들과 결함을 살펴보면서 문제를 살펴보는 것이 타당한 태도겠죠. 이번 시즌 메시의 의의라면 최적의 포지션이 우측에 치우친 세컨드 스트라이커라는 것이 확정되었다는 데 있습니다. 메시는 물론 세컨드 스트라이커 외에도 퍼스트 스트라이커, 라이트윙, 레프트윙, 공격형 미드필더 등을 소화할 수 있는 다재다능한 선수이기는 합니다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 진가를 최대한으로 발휘할 수 있는 것은 저 포지션이 맞다는 것이 시즌 전체를 통해 검증되었죠. 먼저 퍼스트 스트라이커로 가지는 메시의 제한점을 살펴보겠습니다. 그야 메시는 세계에서 골을 가장 많이 넣는 선수이기는 합니다. 그래서 '그냥 스트라이커 시키면 되는 거 아니냐'라고 할 사람도 많겠지요. 하지만 아무리 메시가 골을 많이 때려넣는다 한들 그건 여유 공간이 있을 때 이야기입니다. 메시도 사람인 이상 맨날 어거지로 자기보다 크고 강력한 센터백들을 전후좌우에 끼고 경합하면서 슈팅하면 그냥 동팡저우 되는 거죠. 해서 우측과 중앙을 넘나들면서 수비진을 교란하면서 오른쪽에서 왼쪽을 향해 전진하는 식으로 마크를 비스듬히 비껴나가게끔 플레이해야 살아나는 거고요. 그러자면 박스 부근에서는 메시 대신 더미 플레이 하고 미끼 노릇 하면서 상대 수비진에 균열을 만들어줄 탱커가 있어야합니다. 에투가 그랬고 수아레스가 그랬고. 이구아인 아구에로 투탑을 위로 깔았을 때 메시도 힘겨워 하는 것도 마찬가지로 설명이 됩니다. 2013년 즈음 이후로 저 선수들은 메시에게 여유 공간 만들어 줄 수 없는 정적인 선수가 되었거든요. 물론 10-13처럼 퍼스트 스트라이커로 전세계를 초토화 개발살 낸 적도 있죠. 근데 일단 일차적으로 그때와 지금 기량, 특히 적극성과 활동성, 기동성에서 차이가 큽니다. 이건 피지컬이 하락했기 때문이죠. 그때야 오프 볼 상태에서도 박스 인앤아웃하고 하프 스페이스 오락가락 측면 중앙 이지선다 걸고 드리블이냐 슈팅이냐 간 보는 식으로 상대를 엿먹이면서 여유롭게 볼을 받을 수 있었습니다. 그리고 근본적으로 '여유'의 기준이 남들과 달랐어요. 사기적인 리스폰스와 어질리티와 코디네이션을 가졌던 메시에겐 남들은 수비수와 경합하지 않으면 슛동작을 취할 수 없는 협소한 공간조차도 투 터치 정도는 더할 수 있는 널찍한 공간이었죠. 그리고 이 짓거리를 90분 내내 9개월 동안 할 수 있었습니다. 근데 지금은 끽해야 7개월이고, 그마저도 70분 정도만 할 수 있고, 그 70분 사이에도 투 터치가 아니라 원 터치만 할 수 있죠. 그리고 사실 10-13에도 메시가 그냥 자신만의 움직임만 갖고 상대를 유린한 게 아니었어요. 어쨌든 미끼 노릇을 해줄 비야 페드로 세스크 같은 선수들이 있었기에 상대 수비진이 분산 되었고 그 선수들이 1~2초 동안만 메시가 견제 안 받고 볼을 잡을 수 있게 해주면 그냥 골문에 슈팅 꽂는 거였죠. 지금은 1~2초가 2~3초 정도로 늘어나니까 미끼들의 필요성이 더하고요. 라이트윙으로 안 된다는 건 이미 지난 시즌과 이번 시즌에 걸쳐 입증된 거고요. 발베르데가 실패했든 어쨌든 4-3-3 일변도였던 바르사를 4-4-2 기반으로 성공적으로 개혁하면서 '메시 본인의 역할 변화가 없을 경우' 메시 라이트 기용은 팀 말아먹는 짓이며 메시는 중앙에 박아야 한다는 교훈 자체는 바르사에 명확히 남겨줬죠. 메시를 라이트윙으로 박아봐야 어차피 라이트윙으로서 윙질은 안 하고 컷인해서 아크 서클 쪽 가거나 미들 플레이 하면서 레프트 체인으로 전환 노리는 게 보통인데 그럼 우측 공격은 아예 버려지는 거죠. 14-15 때는 메시가 그래도 우측으로 파고들면서 약발 크로스도 간간히 넣고 오버랩 해 들어오는 라키티치 세르지 활용하면서 어쨌든 상대 수비가 자신들의 레프트를 커버하게끔 끌어냈는데 15-16 시즌 부상 이후부턴 그런 게 없었죠. 근데 라이트에서 공격만 안 하면 괜찮은데 수비까지 안 함 ㄷㄷ 결국 그 부담은 라키티치 세르지에게 고스란히 돌아오는 거고, 라키티치 세르지가 메시 없는 우측에서 공수 다 감당하면서 죽어나니 역설적으로 메시도 고립되어 이들의 지원을 못 받게 되죠. 그래서 메시는 중앙에서 수아레즈 탱킹 믿고 날뛰고, 우측에는 파울리뉴든 뎀벨레든 여튼 한 명 더 박는 식으로 해결한 게 발베르데 식 해법이었고 그 결과 바르사도 메시도 전 시즌보다는 명확히 나았죠. 8강에서 망했고 레반테에게 처발리는 추한 꼴 보였지만 여튼 그조차도 15-17 루쵸 강점기보다는 훨씬 낫고 개선된 모습이었다는 것은 재론의 여지가 없습니다. 메시를 쓰려거든 연필.. 아니 중앙에 써야 한다는 게 입증된 건데, 위에서 말했듯 퍼스트는 안 되고 고기방패 한 명 앞세우고 세컨드로 뛰어야죠. 늘상 그랬듯이 우측 하프스페이스 근방에 머물면서 중앙으로 들어오며 레프트로 공격 방향 전환을 시켜주는 식으로. 물론 메시가 공미로도 잘하죠. 근데 애시당초 공미 자체가 사양 포지션.. 전문 공미의 문제는 그 선수들이 후방 빌드업에도 영향을 못 끼치고 수비에도 기여가 떨어지기에 중원 싸움에서 밀려버린단 거죠. 예전에야 팀에서 추꾸 잘하는 재능러 한 명 있으면 그 놈이 우리편 박스부터 상대편 박스까지 알아서 택배해줬죠. 어차피 미개하던 시절이니까 하프라인까진 프리패스였고, 하프라인 근방에서 볼 받은 축잘러가 드리블을 치든 롱패스를 갈기든 2:1 치고 들어가든 하면 되는 거였죠. 플레이메이킹의 시작점이 경기장 40-50M 즈음이었어요. 근데 점점 압박은 정교해지고 공간은 빡빡해지고 서로가 상호 볼 흐름 견제하는 데에 이골이 나고 노하우가 쌓이고.. 예전처럼 하프라인까지 프리패스가 아니죠. 그러면 플레이메이킹 시작점은 40-50M가 아니라 30-40M, 혹은 우리편 골키퍼와 센터백 사이 지점부터가 될 수 있는데, 이렇게 후퇴할 공간 없고 볼 잃으면 바로 실점으로 이어질 수 있는 후방 공간에서의 빌드업은 하프라인 위에서 행해지는 빌드업과는 성격 자체가 아예 다르거든요. 10번 시도해서 5번 유효타 만드는 플레이는 하프라인 위에서 하면 발롱도르 컨텐더의 위대한 볼터치가 되지만 하프라인 아래에서 하면 후방 빌드업 마스터 안데르손 싸대기치는 역귀놈의 겉멋든 뻘짓이 되는 겁니다. 그러니 팀에서도 역할 분담을 시키죠. 센터백과 골키퍼 앞에서부터 볼 받아서 경기장 3분의 2 지점까지 끌어올려줄 자원들이 '빌드업'을 하고, 그렇게 '플레이'가 '메이킹'이 되고 볼에 리듬이 살아 있는 상태로 전방까지 배달이 되면 실질적으로 유효타 먹일 수 있는 선수들이 활개 치게 되는 거죠. 그러면서 예전 같으면 플레이메이커 소리 들었을 전문 공미들이 전방에만 국한되는 자원으로 전락한 건데, 감독들도 바보가 아니니까 이런 선수들 안 쓰죠. '아니 시불 올드스쿨 공미라고 하는 놈들이라고 해봐야 어차피 그놈들 있는 자리까지 볼 못 올려주면 걍 있으나 마나잖아. 글타고 수비 되는 것도 아니고. 이런 놈들 쓰느니 후방에서 볼운반도 되고 수비 1인분도 하면서 박스 근처에서도 딜 넣어줄 수 있는 놈들 쓰는 게 낫지 않나? 옛날이야 에이스 하나 겨우겨우 확보하고 나머지는 로컬 유스에서 축구 못하는 놈들 빠따질해서 사람 만들어 때웠지, 요즘은 재능러들 남미 아프리카 등등에 넘쳐나는데.' 그러면서 중미와 공미의 경계가 해체된 거고요. 예전에야 축잘러 공미 하나 박고 그거 따까리 해줄 홀딩 두세 명 박는 게 기본이었으니까 공미와 중미의 경계가 명확했지만 요즘은 그런 축구 하면 중원 점거 당하죠. 10년대 초 공미 3대장으로 꼽힌 게 실바, 외질, 세스크인데, 지금 어떻게 되었는지 보세요. 외질 뭐 여전히 잘하지만 한정 자원 되었고, 세스크도 킬패스 하나만 그럴 듯한 선수 되었고, 여전히 잘 나가는 게 실바인데 실바가 그냥 가만히 자기 스타일 고수해서 전방 자원으로만 남은 게 아니죠. 후방 빌드업에서도 수비 기여에서도 1인분 이상 할 수 있게끔 자기 혁신을 하면서(물론 실바는 스킬셋 자체가 워낙 좋은 선수라 적응에 유리하기도 했지만) 전문 공미가 아닌 올라운드한 중원 자원이 되었죠. 그리고 이들이 지나간 자리에 뿌리 내린 게 덕배, 모드리치, 크로스, 코케 같은 선수들인데 다들 실바와 비슷한 궤적 밟았고요. 결국 전문 공미라는 게 에이스 한 명과 나머지 멤버들의 기량차가 넘사벽으로 커서 에이스의 마법 말고는 의미 있는 공격 작업 못 만드는 미들 클럽들이 기책으로 쓸 법한 거지 우승을 바라보는 빅클럽 빅내이션 팀들에겐 메리트가 없단 겁니다. 10년 전 15년 전이면 메시 공미가 위력적이었을지도 모르죠. 근데 지금 공미질 암만 잘해봐야 세스크 외질 공2업 버전에 불과할 수밖에 없고 거기서 나오는 효율은 빤해요. 정리하면 현재 메시는 1. 몸빵과 움직임을 고루 갖춰 '탱킹'할 수 있는 스트라이커 필요 2. 공격이든 수비든 여튼 라이트에서 '윙질' 수행할 자원 필요 3. 윙이든 풀백이든 간에 기동력을 활용하여 레프트 전환을 유도하면서 메시가 수비수를 분산시키고 속도를 낼 수 있는 '환승역'이 될 수 있는 자원 필요 4. 중원에서 '플레이메이킹' 할 자원 필요 5. 이 모든 구색이 갖춰졌을 때 우측에 치우친 프리롤 세컨드 스트라이커로 메시가 뛰면 '7개월'은 세계 씹어먹는 것이 가능. * 그리고 이상의 이유는 메시보다 네이마르가 우월한 선수라는 근거도 됩니다. 저 중에서 네이마르에게 동일하게 적용되는 것은 1번과 4번 밖에 없으며, 나머지 제약으로부터 네이마르는 자유롭거든요. 이것이 젊음의 힘이기도 합니다. 잘하는 것만 할 수 있는 환경을 조성해놓고 잘하는 것만 시키면서 잘하고 있을 때만 관찰하면 누구나 다 잘하는 선수죠. 하지만 그 환경의 제약을 덜 받는 쪽이 있고 더 받는 쪽이 있는데, 덜 받는 쪽이 잘나갈 확률이 훨씬 높은 것은 명백합니다. 그리고 이건 절대적으로 나이의 영향을 받죠.
