로드사이클 경기를 크게 2분류로 나누면 '원데이 클래식 경기'와 '투어 경기'가 있습니다.  원데이 클래식은 이름 그대로 하루짜리 경기입니다. 대략 200km가 좀 넘는, 평지 위주이지만 짧은 업힐들이 많은 코스로 주로 구성되어 있습니다. 이런 대회는 피니시 지점에 먼저 들어오는 선수가 대회 우승을 차지하는 형식입니다. 주로 독주가 강하거나 파워 위주의 올라운드형 선수가 활약하는 곳이죠. 투어 경기와는 차별화된 재미가 있습니다. 벨기에에서 특히 인기가 높은 대회로, 절반 이상이 벨기에와 네덜란드에서 벌어집니다. 벨기에에서 흔히 도는 농담 중에 Tour of Flanders 우승자는 평생 벨기에 펍에서는 돈 안 내고 술 먹을 수 있다고 할 정도죠... 대회 종류는 따로 글을 길게 써야 할 정도로 많으니 이 글에서는 생략하기로 하겠습니다. 투어 경기는 짧게는 1주일, 길게는 TDF처럼 3주 이상 여러 스테이지를 돌면서 최종적으로 랩타임이 가장 짧은 선수와 팀이 우승을 차지하는 구조입니다. 이 투어 대회의 숫자도 정말 많은데, 그 중에서 가장 큰 대회가 3개 존재합니다. 열리는 순서대로, Giro d'Italia(5월 내내) Tour de France(7월 내내) Vuelta a Espana(8월 중하순~9월 초) 이렇게 3개 대회를 Grand Tour라고 부릅니다. 줄여서 GT라고 부르겠습니다. 이 대회들을 노리는 각 팀의 리더 선수들을 Grandtour Contender라고 합니다. 줄여서 GC라이더라고 하겠습니다. GC라이더는 클래식 경기 리더선수와 함께 팀을 대표하는 선수가 됩니다. 연봉도 가장 높고 그만큼 책임도 막중합니다. TDF는 저번 글에서 간략하게 서술했으니 지로와 부엘타에 대해서 한번 이야기해볼까 합니다.  5월 초, 스프링 클래식 시즌이 끝나고 본격적인 투어 시즌을 알리는 대회입니다. 5월 초순부터 약 3주간 걸쳐 전 이탈리아를 구석구석 돌아, 주로 이태리 북부 알프스에서 승부를 내고, 밀라노나 로마로 돌아와서 마지막 퍼레이드를 벌이는 구성으로 짜여집니다. 올해로써 101주년을 맞았고, 작년에는 100주년 대회로 정말 성대한 구성으로 펼쳐졌었죠. 이 대회의 리더 저지는... 무려 분홍색입니다. 정말 확 띄죠.  분홍색을 이렇게 소화시키다니 여윾시 패션으 나라 이때리다...가 아니라(물론 얘들 디자인 센스는 진짜 쩝니다), 이 대회를 처음 구상한 신문사가 축구 팬들이라면 세리에A 루머 출전으로 자주 들어보셨을 "La Gazzetta Dello Sport"인데, 이 신문사의 종이가 옅은 분홍색입니다. 여기에서 고안되었다고 하죠. TDF도 마찬가지입니다. L'Auto 잡지색이 노란색.. 사실 자전거 대회들은 대부분이 백년 전 신문 팔아먹으려고... 만들어진 것들이 많습니다. TV는커녕 라디오도 드물던 시절에는 신문사들의 주 기삿거리 양성용으로 스포츠가 최적이었죠.   지로는 저지 색깔이 TDF랑 많이 다릅니다. 리더 저지인 말리아 로자가 분홍색, 산악왕 저지는 파랑색, 포인트 저지는 보라색... 그리고 작년까지는 타임 트라이얼 스테이지를 꼭 와인 산지 근처에서 열어서, 해당 스테이지를 우승한 선수에게 와인색 저지를 증정했었습니다. 올해는 그게 없어진듯. 예를 들면 바롤로, 몬탈치노, 끼안띠 지방...  이런 식이라 TDF에 익숙해진 시청자들이 상당히 헷갈려합니다. 부엘타는 후술하겠지만 리더 저지 빼면 TDF랑 통일해서 이런 혼동이 없죠. 그런데, 단순히 그냥 단색 저지일 뿐인데 뭔가 프랑스, 스페인보다 때깔이 곱습니다. 경기 중간 중간 보다보면 분홍색을 정말 어울리게 잘 쓴다는 느낌도 받고, 뭔가 디자인이 멋있고, 경치는 끝내주고, 도심으로 들어가도 구도심의 유적들이 웅장하게 반겨줍니다. 돌로미티나 몬테그라파로 가면 그야말로 절경이 뭔지를 보여줍니다. 사실 이태리에서 열리는 대회는 모조리 뷰가 끝내줍니다. 네, 저 이태리 빠입니다-_-;;;   이런 장면이 21스테이지 내내 펼쳐집니다. 유로스포츠의 지로 중계는 사실 경기내용은 10% 될까말까고 헬기로 전체 풍경샷 잡아주는게 1/4, 캐스터랑 해설자랑 노가리까는게 1/3, 나머지는 플레챠라는 선수 출신 리포터의 하드캐리로 이루어집니다-_-;;; 유로스포츠가 관련 영상을 대부분 지워버려서 이걸 소개 못 하는게 한인데 글로 짤막하게 설명드리면 경기 전에 해당 코스를 자기가 직접 자전거 타면서 소개하는 코너가 있는데 그 특유의 장난스러운 표정과 경기 전 여유있게 커피한잔 하면서 빵 먹으면서 시작하다가 그날 코스 업힐 다 오르고 남은 빵을 배고파서 우걱우걱 쳐묵하신다던가-_-;;; 저래뵈도 현역시절 클래식 강자에 영어,불어,스페인어,이태리어가 가능한 능력자입니다 오오... 지로 디탈리아는 대체로 코스 구성이 정형화되어 있습니다. 1~8일까지는 대체로 평온한 가운데 6Stage 정도에 에트나 산 스테이지를 끼워넣습니다(지로는 남부에서 북부로 올라가는 구성입니다). 그리고 1주차가 끝나는 9Stage를 1등급에서 HC급 업힐 피니시로 배치하여 초반부를 마무리하고, 2주차에 TT와 정말 빡센 업힐 하나 둘 정도 땅 때려넣어서 긴장을 고조시키고, 3주차에는 사정없이 산을 때려박습니다. 3주차에 나오는 Zoncolan이라던가 Stelvio라던가 Monte Grappa(콜옵 하신 분들은 떠오르는 그곳 맞습니다)같은 산들은 정말 자비심이 없습니다.  올해 Stage 14에 포함되었던 Zoncolan의 고도표입니다. 10.1km 평균고도 12.5%, 최대 22%... 특히 처음부터 9%대로 시작해서 15~17퍼를 수시로 왔다갔다하는 저 첫 6km... 자세한 설명은 생략합니다. 이렇게 Stage 20까지 마치면 Stage 21은 보통 종합선두권 다투는 선수들 순위는 중립화로 하고 밀라노나 로마에서 퍼레이드 형식으로 경기를 합니다. 이 날은 스프린터들이 주로 활약하고 우승팀은 맥주나 와인 마시면서 도시를 가득 메운 갤러리들에게 인사를 하는 날이죠. 작년은 100주년이라고 이것도 예외로 하고 밀라노에서 마지막으로 타임 트라이얼 경기로 종합선두를 가르는, 정말 잔인한 경기방식을 취했습니다. 그래서 마지막 날 핑크가 바뀌는...  부엘타 아 에스파냐는 1935년부터 시작된, 스페인의 그랜드 투어입니다. 부엘타는 위도도 낮은데 시작하는 날짜가 8월 중순 말즈음부터입니다... TDF도 흔히들 지옥같다고 하지만 부엘타는 정말 기상조건으로는 가혹한 대회입니다. 경기 보다보면 진짜 '이러니까 다들 Yak을 하지...라는 생각이 절로 드는 대회입니다;  리더저지가 빨간색인 것을 제외하면 모든 체제는 TDF와 같습니다. 왜 빨간색인...지는 말 안하셔도 아시겠죠? 당시 주최사였던 신문사인 Informaciones의 상징색을 따왔다고 합니다. 부엘타는 스페인 내의 정치적인 문제 때문에 여러 차례 열리지 못했었는데, 스페인 내전, 2차대전, 그리고 51~54년 4년간 열리지 못했고, 55년부터 지금까지 매년 지속적으로 열리고 있습니다. 예전에는 부엘타를 지로에 비해서도 좀 처지는 대회로 인식했었는데, 요즘은 지로와 부엘타는 위상 차이가 없다고 평가합니다. TDF가 가장 큰 권위이긴 하지만, 이 두 대회도 TDF 바로 턱밑 정도의 권위는 됩니다. 부엘타는 약간 TDF의 패자부활전...같은 이미지가 있습니다. TDF 끝나고 1달 뒤에 열리기도 하고, 부엘타가 끝나면 GC라이더들은 정말로 그해 명예회복을 시도할 대회 자체가 남아있지 않습니다. 하지만 다들 TDF의 격전 이후 회복이 잘 안 되어있다보니 실제 기량에 비해 기복이 잦고, 코스가 워낙 x같은 관계로 이변이 굉장히 잦은 경기입니다. 그 예측불허의 경기진행이 부엘타를 꿀잼보장으로 만드는 요소기도 하죠. 부엘타의 컨셉은 이렇습니다. 산...산...산... 스페인은 정말 광활한 산맥지대 천국의 나라입니다 하하하...  제가 본 대회 스테이지 중에서 가장 정신나간 구성을 보여준 2015 부엘타 Stage 11입니다. 상승고도 5000m에 휴식구간이라고는 눈을 씻고 찾아봐도 없는... 펠로톤이 전혀 구성되지 못하고 전부 선수들별로 찢어져서 경기진행이 아주 아스트랄했던 경기였습니다. 선수들도 다들 혀를 내두른 경기였습니다. 피니시한 선수들 죄다 거지꼴로..ㅠ 저정도는 아니라도 정말 산이 많습니다. 부엘타는 정말 산만 보다가 끝납니다. 덕택에 스프린터들에겐 그리 인기가 없고, 클라이머들이 판치는 대회입니다. 그리고 정말 실험적인 시도를 많이 합니다. 가끔 너무 창의력이 넘쳐서 대회 진행을 말아먹을 정도의 케이스(팀 TT시작을 백사장에서 시작했다가 선수들이 죄다 모래를 먹고 시작한다던가...)도 있지만, 대체로 그러한 시도는 높은 평가를 받습니다. 다음 글에서는 로드사이클 시즌의 대략적인 스케줄표(WorldTour 기준)와 중요한 클래식, 투어 대회들을 짚어보도록 하겠습니다. 정성 넘치는 글 잘 봤습니다!
3대 그랜드 투어들은 역사가 길고 그만큼 각자의 개성이 뚜렷해서 다 재미있는 것 같아요.
개인적으로는 산악 스테이지가 더 많고 고될수록 보는 입장에선 재미있게 느껴지기는 해요.
TDF 같은 경우엔 조금 절제된(?) 느낌의 코스 구성이 많아서 조금 심심하다는 느낌도 있기는 하지만 그만큼 품위가 있고..
작년 지로와 올해 지로도 굉장히 재미있었구요.
다만 작년 부엘타는 프룸이 너무 강력하기도 하고 다른 GC 선수들이 지쳐서 조금 맥을 못추는 느낌을 많이 받았거든요.
올해는 어떨까요? 정말 기대가 됩니다!
