탐라에 사이클 글은 댓글이 별로 안달리네요 하고 징징거리긴 했는데 사실 저는 아싸지향입니다. 스스로를 반골기질이 강하다고 생각하기도 하구요. 조회수 10넘고 추천이 하나라도 달리면 계속 쓸 예정입니다. 아, 그리고 이제서 이야기하는데 저 투머치토커입니다-_-;;; 글은 계속 길 예정입니다... 로드사이클뿐만 아니라 모든 자전거 대회를 주관하는 협회를 UCI라고 합니다. 유우랍스뽀츠답게 UCI의 약자가 불어고 공식 언어도 불어 위주(FIFA의 약어가 불어인 이유와 같습니다)에 본사는 스위스에 계셔서 공홈 주소도 www.uci.ch던가 그럴겁니다. 사이클 협회는 UCI를 기준으로 각 대륙협회-각 국가협회가 있는 형식입니다. 여타 스포츠들과 같죠. 로드사이클만 떼놓고 보면, 현재 전 세계에는 수많은 자전거 선수와 팀, 그리고 수많은 자전거 대회가 있습니다. 자전거 팀부터 잠시 간략하게 소개하면, 일단 제일 밑에는 Continental Team이 있습니다. 여기에 소속된 팀들은 정말 바닷가의 모래알...은 좀 과하지만 여튼 엄청나게 많습니다. 쉽게 이야기해서 3부 팀이라고 합시다. 한국에 있는 7개 팀은 전부 여기에 속합니다. 언젠가는 한국에서도 이 등급을 넘어서는 팀이 나오기를 바랍니다. 그 위에는 Pro Continental Team이 있습니다. 여기서부터는 슬슬 중계에 보이기 시작하는 팀들입니다. UCI가 요구하는 일정 이상의 팀 조건(2명 이상의 매니저, 3명 이상의 스태프(팀 닥터, 매카닉, 어시 등), 14명 이상의 선수, 일정 이상의 스폰서)을 항상 갖추고 있고 UCI에 등록이 된 팀들을 말합니다. 여기에 해당하는 팀은 전 세계 다 합쳐서 27팀 정도 됩니다. 그 위로 WorldTour Team이 있습니다. UCI는 월드 투어 팀 라이센스를 18팀으로 제한하고 있습니다. 라이센스는 사고팔 수 있는 개념이죠. 그래서 자전거 팀은 정말 시도때도 없이 휙휙 바뀝니다. 스폰만 바뀌기도 하고, 팀이 팔려서 없어졌다가 완전히 새로운 팀으로 헤쳐모여하기도 하고... 로드 투어는 그 커보이는 규모에 비해 어이없을 정도로 경제적 규모가 작습니다. 이유는 간단합니다. 입장수입이 0이라서 철저하게 광고에 의존해야하는 시스템이기 때문입니다. 그걸 좀 감안해도 어이가 없는 액수들이 나오는데 이는 후술하겠습니다. 이 월드투어 팀들이 의무적으로 참가해야 하는 대회들을 UCI에서 주욱 늘어놓았습니다. 이걸 UCI World Tour(UWT)라고 하고 이 리스트는 링크에 있습니다. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_UCI_World_Tour 여기에 나와있는 모든 대회들이 중요한 것은 아닙니다. 아부다비 투어나 광시 투어처럼 어디에서 기름냄새 돈냄새 잔뜩 나는 대회들도 있고, UCI가 요즘 들어 아 장사하자~먹고살자~모드로 월드투어급 대회를 대폭 늘려서 기존 지역대회에서 갑자기 월드투어로 승격한 에쉬본-프랑크프루트라던가 런던-서레이라던가... 이런 대회는 등급이 월드투어고 포인트가 아무리 높아도 그렇게까지 쳐 주지는 않습니다. 물론 돈에는 장사없다고 아부다비 투어는 스프린터들이 많이 가면서 좀 쳐주는 모양새긴 하지만 그래도 아직도 인식은 스프린터들 몸 풀러 가는곳... 저기에 있는 원데이 클래식 대회들 중에서 유수의 역사를 자랑하고, 코스의 난이도 면에서 굉장히 어려우며 독특한 특색을 가지고 있는 대회들이 5개 있습니다. 이 5개 대회를 흔히 Monument라고 부르며, 클래식 대회의 정점으로 부릅니다. 이 5대 모뉴먼트를 한 대회, 한 번이라도 우승한 선수는 수많은 주목을 받게 되고, 견제를 받게 됩니다. 그만큼 정복하기 어려운 대회들이며, 봄철 자전거 시즌의 꽃으로 불립니다. 이 대회 5개를 열리는 순서대로 나열하면, Milan-San Remo(3월 중순) Ronde van Vlaanderen(영어로는 Tour of Flanders, 4월 초) Paris-Roubaix(위 대회 1주일 후) Liege-Bastogne-Liege(4월 하순) Giro Il Lombardia(10월 초) 이렇게 됩니다. 하나하나씩 살펴보겠습니다.  첫 모뉴먼트인 밀란-산레모입니다. 대회 이름 그대로 밀라노에서 시작해서, 이탈리아 최서단의 산 레모까지 달리는 경기입니다. 제노바 서쪽부터 산레모까지 주욱 지중해를 타고 가는 코스가 절경으로 이름이 높습니다.    위 사진은 이 대회의 고도표입니다. 표만 봐도 이 대회의 특징을 바로 알 수 있습니다. 첫째로, 정말 끔찍하게 깁니다. 291km. 현재 열리고 있는 원데이 대회중에서도 가장 긴 편에 들어갑니다. 경기시간이 7시간을 넘어가죠. 물론 중계는 앞부분 다 잘라먹기 때문에 시청자 입장에서는 그닥 상관은 없습니다만... 두 번째로, 어택 포인트가 딱 2곳입니다. 가장 끄트머리에 있는 2개의 언덕, 피니시 20km즈음 있는 치프레사와 마지막 7km즈음에 나오는 포지오. 260km를 달려오면서 지친 선수들이 치프레사에서 슬슬 걸러지기 시작하고, 포지오에서 승부를 거는 식입니다. 특히 포지오는 입구가 이렇게 되어있어서 선두에 있지 않으면 병목현상으로 뒤에 갇혀서 지금까지 고생도 헛되이 대회 시마이할 수도 있습니다.  모뉴먼트 대회의 특징인데, 승부처에 이러한 구조라던가 장애물들(코블스톤이나 그래블, 자갈밭) 때문에 우승후보는 항상 선두권에 있어야 하는 것입니다. 한번 뒤쳐지면 뒤에서 추격하는게 너무 힘듭니다. 보통은 느려진 페이스에 그대로 자기 페이스가 말려들어서 회복 못하고 끝나거든요. 그만큼 가혹한 대회들입니다. 밀란-산 레모는 아무래도 업힐이 적다 보니 전통적으로 스프린터나 파워가 좋은 클래식 선수들이 많이 우승했지만, 작년에 미하우 크비앗콥스키, 올해는 빈첸조 니발리가 우승하는 등 꼭 그렇지만은 아닌 모습입니다. 특히 올해 빈첸조 니발리는 본인의 장기인 날카로운 어택 타이밍+무시무시한 업힐능력으로 간발의 차로 모두를 바보로 만들고 우승을 차지하면서 전설의 반열에서 계속 순위를 높이게 되었죠. 아래 영상이 바로 그 장면으로, 포지오에서 앞 선수의 어택을 이용해먹어서 슬쩍 나오더니 무지막지한 가속으로 독주하는 장면입니다. 라이브로 보면서 정말 전율이 돋는 느낌... 이 선수 별명이 괜히 'Shark'가 아닙니다. 정말 본능적으로 찾아낸, 하지만 너무나 정확한 타이밍이죠. 오르막 딱 끝나는 지점.. 펠로톤은 서로 눈치게임 중이라 정신없는 사이... 다음으로 소개할 대회는, 벨기에에서 열리는 Ronde van Vlaanderen(론데 반 플랑드른 정도... 더러운 플레미쉬)입니다. 영어로는 Tour of Flanders. 이름답게 플란더스 지방에서 펼쳐지는 대회입니다. 이 대회에 앞서서 그 전 주 토요일에 E3 Harelbeke(하렐베케), Ronde가 열리는 주의 화요일에 Gent-Wevelgem(겐트-베벌햄)이 같은 지방에서 열리죠. 그래서 이 3 대회를 묶어서 'Flanders Classic'이라고 칭합니다. 이 2주간 벨기에는 그야말로 광란의 도가니입니다. 특히 Ronde에서의 관중들의 광기를 보면 벨기에가 얼마나 자전거에 미쳐있는 나라인지 아주 잘 알게 됩니다... 다음에 소개할 Paris-Roubaix와 함께 클래식의 꽃이라 불리는 대회입니다. 이 두 대회는 클래식을 노리는 선수라면 정말 누구든지 꿈꾸는 대회며, 다른 모뉴먼트들도 그렇지만 정말 수많은 명 선수들을 배출하고, 명승부를 만들었던 대회입니다. 그만큼 모두가 갈망하지만, 영광을 얻기까지의 과정은 정말 가혹한 대회들입니다. 론데의 가장 큰 특징은 코블스톤 클래식이라는 것입니다. 밑의 사진과 같은 코블 포장도로를 여러 곳 지나가게 됩니다.  보기만 해도 아주 죽여주는 포장인데 여기에 비라도 오면 정말 경기가 아수라장이 됩니다. 물론 비 오면 끝판왕인 대회가 둘 더 있긴한데 코블 클래식도 만만찮습니다... 이런 곳을 상시 풀가스로 달려나가야 하니 정말 지옥이 따로 없습니다. 펑크라도 나면 그냥 대회 끝..  올해 Ronde의 스테이지표입니다. 저기에 나와있는 언덕들은 모조리 코블구간입니다. 막판 격전지 부분은 동네를 뺑 돌면서 코블구간이 붙어있기 때문에 관중들이 한 곳을 본 다음 다음 격전지로 옮겨가기에 구성되어 있습니다. 언덕은 매해 구성이 많이 달라지는데 대체로 최종적으로는 Paterberg로 고정되어 있고, 그 전에 Kwaremont, Koppenberg같은 악명높은 업힐들(최대 22%짜리)을 지나쳐야 합니다. 업힐들 하나하나는 짧지만 기본적으로 포장이 코블인데다가 갑자기 경사가 확 높아지기 때문에 이런 업힐에서는 선두권에 있지 않으면 병목현상으로 멈추게 되서 선수들도 끌바를 하게 되는 최악의 상황이 벌어집니다... 사실상 선수들 걸러내는 역할을 하게 되죠. 예전에는 Muur van Geraardsbergen이라는 지점이 최종 승부처였었다고 합니다. KappelMuur라고도 하는 이 언덕 정상에는 성당이 하나 있는데, 사이클 동호인들에게는 성지로 여겨지는 곳이기도 하죠.   바로 이 곳입니다. 이 곳은 한때 대회 코스에서 빠졌다가 작년부터 부활했는데, 이제는 최종 승부처가 아닌, 코스 중반의 한 업힐로 남게 되었습니다. 그래도 관중들에겐 여전히 인기 좋은 명소더군요. 마지막 업힐인 Paterberg도 재미있는 사실이 있습니다. 여기는 원래 대회 코스에 전혀 없었고 애초에 코블 포장된 도로도 아니었다고 합니다. 그런데 그 지역 주민들이 자기 마을 앞으로 코스가 지나가도록 유치를 하고 싶어서, 언덕배기에 전부 코블을 손수 포장하고 잘 닦아서 대회 조직위에 요청했다고 합니다-_-;;; 이 업힐은 마지막까지 선두가 2명 이상일 경우 최종 관문정도의 역할을 하게 됩니다. 2013년에 캉셀라라가 사간을 빡점놓고 우승을 차지한 곳, 2016년에 반대로 사간이 셉 판마르케를 빡점놓고 추격하던 캉셀라라를 끝까지 따돌린 곳도 Paterberg죠. 지난 4월에 벌어졌던 Paris-Roubaix에서의 초장거리 어택과 함께 피터 사간 커리어 최고의 장면 중 하나, 2016 Ronde에서 사간이 판 마르케를 Paterberg에서 빡점놓고 독주해나가는 장면입니다. 이곳이 Paterberg죠. 올해 우승자는 QuickStep-Floors의 니키 테릅스트라였습니다. 팀의 수적 우위를 잘 활용한 후, 과감하게 어택을 지른 다음에 정말 미친놈처럼 극후반부 업힐을 치고올라가서 우승을 차지했습니다. 사람인지 짐승인지 구분이 안 가는 똥파워... 이번에 소개할 대회는, Ronde가 벌어지고 1주일 뒤에 펼쳐지는 프랑스의 Paris-Roubaix입니다. 파리-루베라고 읽는데 저는 그냥 줄여서 루베라고 하겠습니다. 클래식의 여왕이라 불리는 대회입니다. 이 대회의 특징은 아래 영상으로 대신합니다. 올해 열렸던 루베의 온보드 카메라 하이라이트입니다. 그야말로 전쟁터를 방불케 하는 격렬한 경기입니다. 이 모든 원인은 pavé(파베)라고 불리는 코블구간에 있습니다. 론데는 그래도 코블스톤이 잘 정돈되기라도 하지, 루베의 파베구간은 정말 더럽습니다. 사진으로 확인해 볼까요.  루베에서 가장 유명한 파베구간, Arenberg의 숲길 구간입니다. 루베의 파베구간은 해마다 조금씩 다르지만 20개 후반 정도 되는데, 반드시 들어가는 구간입니다. 파베 구간은 길이와 Rough함에 따라서 1성부터 5성까지 등급을 매기는데, 아렌버그는 딱 세 개 존재하는 5성구간입니다. 길이도 더럽게 긴데다 이게 딱 중후반부에 튀어나오기 때문에 이 숲길부터 본격적으로 우승후보들간의 전투가 벌어지게 됩니다. 루베는 코스 길이도 긴 편인데다가, 파베구간은 입구가 대체로 좁고 도로폭도 좁고 좌우로는 도랑인 경우가 많아서 자리싸움을 위해서 정말 경기가 격렬하게 펼쳐집니다. 선수들끼리 바퀴가 걸려서 낙차, 코너 돌다가 삐끗해서 낙차, 삐죽 튀어나온 코블에 바퀴가 걸려서 펑크... 등등 정말 리타이어가 많습니다. 오죽하면 루베는 운이 좋아야 우승하는게 아니라 불운이 적어야 우승한다는 말이 있을까요. 그냥 봐도 지옥같은 경기인데 비라도 오면 정말 어썸한 대회가 된다고 합니다. 1차대전의 참호전을 하루 치른 병사들의 모습을 간접체험하는 느낌이라나? 아쉽게도(?) 지난 십수년간은 루베 당일 비가 안 와서 가장 최근의 우천경기는 2001년이라고 합니다.  Welcome to Hell. 이 대회는 메카닉들에게도 아주 고역인 대회입니다. 저렇게 거지같은 자갈밭을 풀가스로 시속 40~50 이상으로 달려야 하는 것입니다. 선수들의 엉덩이도 탈탈탈 털리겠지만 자전거가 견뎌내야 할 충격량도 장난이 아닌거죠. 그래서 루베 전용 자전거들도 많이 보이는데 보다보면 재밌는게 많다고 합니다(장비 부분은 제가 쥐약이라 설명을 못합니다ㅜ). 2018 루베의 우승자는 피터 사간. 54km 지점에서 초장거리 어택을 때려 성공시켰습니다. 사간도 이렇게 해서 두 번째 모뉴먼트 획득. 4번째로 소개할 대회는, 현존하는 자전거 대회에 중에서 가장 역사가 깊은 Liege-Bastogne-Liege입니다. 줄여서 LBL이라고 하겠습니다. 이름 그대로 벨기에의 리에주에서 출발해서 바스토뉴 찍고 돌아오는 대회죠. 1892년부터 열렸다고 합니다. 루베가 끝나고 그 다음 주부터, 2주간 3개의 대회가 열리는데 이 세 대회를 아르덴 클래식이라고 합니다. 2차대전의 그 아르덴 맞습니다. 이 지역의 무한 업다운 언덕배기를 지나가는 대회라 앞서 열린 대회랑은 성격이 많이 다르죠. 그래서 참가하는 선수들도 업힐에서 폭발적인 가속을 내는 선수들 위주로 많이 바뀝니다.  이 대회를 상징하는 사진입니다. 좁고 짧지만 상당히 급경사인 길들을 수십 차례씩 오르락내리락합니다. 250km로 굉장히 긴 데다 저런 업힐 수가 장난 아니라서, 총 상승고도가 심하면 5000m에 달하는 고된 경기입니다. 게다가 좁기 때문에 뒤로 갈수록 우승후보들은 앞자리를 차지하기 위해 심한 경쟁을 하게 됩니다. 2018년 우승자는 밥 융겔스. 룩셈부르크 출신의 올라운더로, 정말 다재다능한 선수입니다. 원래 이 아르덴 클래식은 스페인의 알레한드로 발베르데라는 선수가 끝판왕 고인물인데(작년엔 36살의 나이로 플레시 왈롱과 LBL을 다 우걱우걱...) 이번에는 팀 단위 전략으로 발베르데를 녹여버리고 우승을 차지합니다. 퀵스텝의 저력이 돋보였죠. 마지막으로 소개할 대회는, 혼자 10월에 열리는 Giro Il Lombardia입니다. 이름 그대로 북부 이탈리아에서 열리는 대회로, 최근 들어 참가선수 면면이 상당히 화려해지면서 위상이 더 올라가는 대회입니다. 별칭은 낙엽의 레이스. 이 대회는 캘린더상 시즌을 마감하는 대회로 분류됩니다. 3대 투어, 기타 중요한 원데이 대회들, 월드 챔피언십까지 끝나고 열리는 대회라 마지막으로 열리는 큰 대회가 되는거죠. 페르가모 지방과 꼬모 호수변에서 대회가 펼쳐집니다. 구성은 해마다 조금씩 바뀌지만, 기살로 성당과 소르마노 업힐은 빠지지 않습니다. 이 두 곳이 롬바르디아의 상징이죠.  이곳이 마돈나 델 기살로 성당입니다. 모든 자전거 라이더들을 수호해 주시는 마리아의 그림도 있죠. 들어가면 해당 배지도 판다고 합니다.  Muro di Sormano입니다. 7km에 평균 경사도 9km, 사진의 최대 경사도는 25%... 레이스 최후반부에 나와서 라이더들을 멘붕시키는 구간입니다. 게다가 이걸 올라갔으면 내려가기까지 해야해서 다운힐 능력까지 요구받습니다. 정말 좁고 위험한 업힐 다운힐 구간이라 고난이도의 스킬을 요구받습니다. 롬바르디아는 구성이 클래식보다는 그랜드 투어의 퀸스테이지를 연상케 합니다. 실제로도 GC라이더들이 많이 와서 마지막 영광을 노리기도 하죠. 2017년도 우승자는 빈첸조 니발리였고, 올해 대회는 10월 7일로 예정되어 있습니다. 다음 글에서는 모뉴먼트 외의 중요한 원데이 클래식 대회를 소개하겠습니다. 그다음 주요 투어경기, 팀 소개 선수소개...로 죽 이어볼까 생각중입니다. 스페셜라이즈드에 저 루베 이름을 딴 모델 친구것을 빌려서 타본 일이 있습니다.
예전에는 프레임에 zertz라는 구조물이 들어가 샥 대신 충격을 흡수하는 역할을 했는데
지금은 아예 스템에 Future Shock이라는 내장형 샥을 장치하기도 하는 모양이더라구요.
