이공계 박사중인 (이제 만 2년이 되는) 대학원생입니다. 몇달 전에 해외 박사과정 제도의 '프릴림'을 어거지로 통과했고.. 대강 경험-자신감 그래프 에서 한창 깊은 골짜기에 있는 상태인 것 같습니다. 일단 실력도 실력이지만 동기부여가 너무 힘든 것 같습니다. 애초에 동기부여 라는 말 자체가.. 생각이 너무 복잡하니 의식의 흐름대로 우선 써 볼게요. (1) 동기라는 걸 인위적으로 부여하는 거 자체가 말이 안 되는 것 같습니다. 어떤 일을 할 이유가 내면적으로 약하게 느껴지는 데 그걸 억지로 강화하는 거 자체가 모순 아닌가.. 이걸 해야 하는지 말아야 하는지도 불분명한데 단순히 방황이 싫어서 억지로 마음의 평형 상태를 만드는 것일 뿐.. (2) 사실 저는 상대적으로 진로 고민을 별로 안 한 편입니다. 중학교 때부터 한국 수능식 제네럴리스트 교육?에 거부감이 들고 이과 과목 몰빵..을 하고 싶어서 (중학교 성적도 문과계열 과목이 수학/과학보다 상대적으로 나빠서) 좀 더 공부의 편식(?)을 하고 싶어 과고를 준비했고, 과고에 갔고, 그냥 그렇게 당연히 과학자가 될 거다..라는 식으로 한 22~23살? 까지는 살아왔습니다. 학부 졸업이 가까울 때는 대학원을 잘 가기 위해 나름 총력?까지는 아니어도 (이때부터 서서히 독기가 빠지기 시작하긴 했습니다) 나름 적절히 노력했고 대학원까지는 그래서 왔습니다. 군대 갔다 오면서 학부졸업 출신으로서의 사회생활?보다는 대학원이 낫겠다는 생각을 했었구요. (3) 그래서 그 때 그 시절 장착한 포부, 초심 같은 것의 기억은 당연히 있습니다. 지식을 탐구하는 것, 좋죠. 창조적인 일이고, 호랑이는 죽어서 가죽을 남기듯 나란 사람 하나 죽는다고 인생을 함께 했던 기억과 물질과 관념이 다 사라지는 것이 아니라 후대에 뭔가 남길 수 있다는 것, 좋은 머리 타고나서 사회에 환원하고 재능기부 할 수 있는거 좋다고 생각합니다. (4) 하지만 그 때 썼던 자기소개서와 연구분야 계획..같은 건 박사학위 과정을 확실하게 잘 설계하기에는 충분하지 않았습니다. 대학원에 입학하는 데까지는 유효한 계획이었을지 몰라도 박사 졸업을 위한 가이드라인이라고 보기에는 실체도 없고 두리뭉실합니다. 그렇다고 해서 특정한 아주 좁은 분야에서 내면에서부터 우러러나오는 엄청난 매력..을 느끼거나 하지도 않습니다. 그냥 두리뭉실한 그 넓은 분야 카테고리 안에 들어가는, 교수님이 던져준 주제 붙잡아서 연구하고 데이터 뽑는거죠. 고년차가 되어서 제가 스스로 특정 주제에 대한 호기심?을 갖고 주제의 중요성에 대한 충분한 검증을 해서 발제를 하는 모습 자체가 아예 상상이 되지 않습니다. 이제 대학원 생활 절반을 향해 달려가는데요. (5) 곧 20대 후반이 되는데.. 지금 나이가 되어서는 그냥 일이라는 거 자체가 그냥 하기 피곤합니다. 네. 그냥 무조건 놀고 싶습니다. 솔직히 그렇게 뭐 코피나게 열심히 하지도 않았는데도 그냥 세상에 쉴거리만 많이 보입니다. 학문의 전당, 지성의 탑, 뭐 말로는 다 좋지만 현실은 제가 '강제적인 구속이 없는 상태에서' 자발적으로 의지를 내서 일하고 공부하고 하는 양을 따져보면 학계에서, 사회에서 요구하는 근면함의 정도엔, 열정의 정도엔 한참 못 미칩니다. 연구실도 자율적 분위기다 보니 제 스스로 터치도 받지 않고 이런 생체실험?을 할 수 있었는데 냉정하게 이대로 가다간 죽도 밥도 안 될 것 같습니다. (6) 세상에 직업에 귀천 없고 지식에도 귀천 없죠. 무슨 연구분야든 무슨 연구주제든 다 나름대로의 가치가 있고 매력이 있죠. 뭐 하나에 꽂혀서 '난 진짜 이 문제를 풀기 위해 태어났고 이 미지의 것의 베일을 벗겨서 진실을 보고 싶다!' 라는 궁금증을 굳이 가질 이유가 떠오르지 않습니다. 가슴에서 우러나오지도 않습니다. IT분야, 전자공학, 기계공학 쪽은 우리가 살아가는 동안에도 하루하루 너무나 빠르게 변화하고 있고 보고있기만 해도 신기한 것들이 너무나 많죠. 자연과학 이론은 그것보단 덜 가시적이고, 연구의 페이스도 느립니다. 스마트폰이 몇 세대가 바뀔 동안 열심히 한 주제 파서 연구하고 고심하고 해야 겨우 지엽적인 지식 한두페이지 겨우 나오죠. 그래도 그만큼 근본적 이고 insightful 하니까 괜찮다고는 생각했습니다. 그리고 한우물을 오래 파서 노년에 이르러 새로운 이론체계를 정립하고 textbook 써내는 사람들도 대단하다고는 생각합니다. 답이 다 나와 있는 textbook을 보면서도 이해하기도 벅찬 저것을 저사람들은 아무것도 없는 황무지에서 스스로 생각해서 만들어 냈다는 거, 대단하다고는 생각합니다. 가치도 있는 것 인정합니다. 하지만 제가 그렇게 하려면 어떻게 해야 할까 를 생각하니 그냥 기약도 없고 막막하죠. 막상 뭔가 만들어냈을 때 얼마나 희열이 있을지도 솔직히 모르겠습니다. 제가 탈락해도 다른 사람이 얼마든지 해낼 수 있는 거고, 제가 굳이 어떤 '특정 주제'를 골라야 할 이유도, 사회적 상황이 초래한 사명 같은 것도 없죠. (7) 이쯤 되니.. 과거로부터 쭉 이어지는 시간 동안 스스로를 속였나 싶은 생각이 듭니다. 사실은 저는 그냥 '밖에서 보기에 좀 있어보이고 똑똑한 사람'의 '포지션'을 잡고 싶었던 것이지, 정말 자연이 복잡한 결계를 치고 감추고 있는 지식 그 자체를 갈구하지는 않았던 건지도 모릅니다. 이젠 진정으로 사회에 어떤 생산적인 것을 하고 싶은지도 잘 모르겠습니다. 상대적으로 하기 싫은 것들은 있습니다. 누구나 상상하는 거: 전체주의적/권위주의적 조직문화 속에 들어가 몰개성한 부품이 되는 공포를 되도록이면 피하고 싶은 것 정도? 그리고 지금까지 쭉 글을 쓰면서도 돈에 대한 얘기는 안 나왔죠. 재물욕심 많이 없는 편인 거? 정도는 알겠습니다. 제반 상황과, 각종 가치관 상의 불호성향? 은 이공계 연구자로 적성을 몰아가게 만드는 페이크 요인인 건 사실입니다. 하지만 세상이 불호의 소거..만으로 살아지지는 않는 것 같습니다. (8) 현실적으로는 하던 일 계속 하는 게 신상에 가장 유리합니다. '마음 다잡고' 하면 흘러갈 거고 '기대값'은 가장 나을 것입니다. 하지만 2년 내내 고민하면서도 '시간과 경험이 답인가보다'라는 다짐만으로 억누르던 게 이제는 슬슬 답답하고, 정말 풀리지 않아 걱정마저 됩니다. 단순히 시간이 지나면 저절로 생리적으로 마음이 안정될 것이다..같은 효과 말고, 제가 뭔가 관념적으로 아예 놓친 부분 이 있을까요? 무엇이든 뭔가 깊은 공부..를 하시는 분들은 어떤 생각을 해오셨는지 궁금합니다. 틈틈이 취미로 과학철학 같은 걸 공부하면서 근본적인 의미를 찾을까요? 아니면 힘들더라도 논문을 수백 편쯤 쌓아두고 더 수련을 할까요? 원래는 아카데미아를 생각했지만 아카데미아에 있을 자신을 상상하니 지식의 즐거움이고 뭐고 전에 논문을 찍어내야 하는 일상이 언제 미끄러질 지 모른다는 '압박감'으로 다가올 것이 상상됩니다. 논문 하나하나를 내면서 지식을 캐는 게 즐겁고 심적으로 여유로워야 하는 것 아닌가요? 물론 지금까지 논문을 그렇게 막 많이 내본 건 아닙니다. 1저자는 이제서야 겨우 준비중이고, 그래서 논문 퍼블리시의 진입장벽이 내심 크게 느껴지는 것도 사실이고, 경험을 좀 더 쌓으면 그나마 좀 나아지긴 하겠죠. '그렇게 펀딩 낭비할거면 빨리 때려치우고 나가라'라고 고함지르는 커미티 교수님들이 나오는 악몽도 여러 차례 꾸었고, 미래에 대한 종합적인, 근본적인 불길함을 어떻게 떨칠 방법을 모르겠습니다. 할일이야 잔뜩 쌓여있고 어거지로 꾸역꾸역 해나간다 쳐도.. 도대체 이 세상에 제가 하고 싶은 일이란게 근본적으로 있긴 했던 것인지? 그조차도 이제는 모르겠습니다. 1. 맞습니다. 저도 동기부여가 너무 안돼서 동기부여 관련 책을 읽다가 (그런짓은 하지 말아야 했는데…) 내가 왜 이걸 읽고있지? 라는 생각이 들어서 그냥 좀 쉬었습니다. 쉬고 나서 생각좀 하고 글좀 쓰고 하면서 다시 생각해보았지요.
2. 사실 말잘듣고 착한 사람들이 이런 고민들을 좀 뒤늦게 합니다. 이런 고민을 안하게 만드는 교육제도가 나쁜거라고 봐요.
3. 이게 의외로 나중 진로의 키워드가 될 수 있습니다. 지금 당장은 아니더라도요. 저도 요즘 교육쪽으로 사업해보는게 어떨까? 하는 생각도 듭니다. 영리사업이든 공익사업... 더 보기

4. 원래 박사 따고 나서도 헤매는게 이 바닥인거 같습니다. 하지만 어떻게라도 고민을 한 사람과 고민 없이 사는 사람은 똑같은 박사라고 할지라도 나중엔 다 티가 나게 되어있습니다. 박사의 문언적 정의 그대로 풀면 스스로 분과 학문 하나를 이끌고 후진을 교육해서 박사의 수준까지 이끌 수 있는 사람인데, 학위만 박사인 사람들이 꽤 많습니다.
5. 20대 후반과 30대 중반이 참 놀고 싶은 시기이긴 합니다. 그 맘 충분히 이해합니다. 이러면 죽도 밥도 안될거 같다고 생각하시는걸 보니 놀더라도 멀리는 안가시겠네요. 걱정하지 마시고 좀 놀다 오세요. 어차피 제자리로 올 분인데 좀 논다고 뭐가 어떻게 되겠습니까. 너무 자학하고 자책하지 마세요.
6. 가슴속에 타오르는 불길을 일찍 만나는 사람도 있고 늦게 만나는 사람도 있는 법입니다. 빠르게 타오르는 사람도 있고 뭉근하게 타들어가는 사람도 있는거죠. 저는 30대 중반에 접어든 요즘에서야 내가 할일이 무엇인것 같다, 하는 아주 희미한 실루엣만 본 상황입니다.
7. 이건 저도 비슷하게 생각하는데, 사실 비슷한 상황에 놓여 비슷한 고민하는 사람 치고 정말로 그랬던 사람은 별로 없는 것 같고, 또 진정으로 100% 충실하게 산 사람도 별로 없는 것 같습니다. 그리고 이렇게 사나 저렇게 사나 방향성이 중요한 거지 얼마나 더 치열하게 살았다, 하는건 크게 중요한건 아닌거 같습니다. 세상이 불호의 소거로만 살아지는건 아니긴 하죠. 동감합니다.
8. 이것 또한 지나가지 않을까 싶습니다. 주변에 이래저래 박사분들이 바글바글… 한데 일하시면서도 고민들 많이 하십니다. 학문과 업은 또 다른 영역이라서요. 하지만 ‘박사’ 답게 자신이 해야 할 일이 떨어지면 그 일을 주도적으로 이끌어 결국은 해결해 나가는 모습을 보면 역시 ‘박사’답다는 생각이 듭니다. 그게 중요한거 아닌가 싶습니다. ‘나는 잘 안다’ 라는 의미로서의 박사보다 ‘나는 잘 알아갈 수 있다, 잘 해 나갈 수 있다’ 라는 의미로서의 박사가 더 중요한거 같습니다.
