서울에서 3대 메밀국수집으로 통하는 송옥입니다. 남대문시장에서 북창동으로 향하는 길에 있어서, 저녁시간이면 북창동에서 일하는 사람들로 붐비는 곳이지요. 소바, 메밀국수를 주문합니다. 주전자에는 쯔유가 있어서 원하는 만큼 드실 수 있지만, 쯔유를 벌컥벌컥 마실 분은 없으실 겁니다. 일본의 소바는 무즙은 사용하지 않는다고 합니다만, 이곳은 한국이니 무즙과 파도 이렇게 마음 것 먹을 수 있도록 준비되어 있습니다. 주문한 메밀국수입니다. 1인분에 두짝인데, 옆 테이블의 노 부부는 5짝을 주문해서 두분이서 나눠서 드시더군요. 쯔유에 파와 무즙, 그리고 겨자를 살짝 곁들입니다. 그리고 이렇게 쯔유에 담궈서 먹습니다. 남대문에 올 때 마다 들리는 식당입니다만, 오랜만에 오니 주인장이 바뀐 모양입니다. 예전의 담배피던 손으로 반죽하시던 할아버지와 할머니는 사라지시고, 아주머니 두분이서 장사를 하고 계시는군요. 쯔유의 맛이 조금 짜진 것 같은 느낌도 듭니다만, 맛은 크게 달라지지 않은 것 같습니다. 서울의 3대 메밀국수집이라고 하면, 미진, 송옥, 유림을 손에 꼽습니다만, 요즘 미진은 악평이 너무 많지요. 그 중에서도 다들 송옥을 손에 꼽는데, 그 이유는 진한 쯔유의 맛과 메밀면 때문입니다. 어린시절에는 이런 소바를 파는 식당이 많이 있었습니다만, 최근에는 대부분 사라지고, 새롭게 소바를 하는 식당들도 얼마 버티지 못하는 것 같습니다. 아마도 가격은 분식집 수준인데, 제대로 하려면 품이 많이 들어서 그런것 같습니다. 비록 주인은 바뀐 것 같지만 이 곳 송옥이 100년까지 지속되었으면 하는 생각이 듭니다.
