'강남역 10번'출구에 대한 얘기일수도, 아닐수도 있습니다. 나는 페미니스트가 아닙니다. 나는 책임질 것이 없기 때문입니다. 저는 노동운동에 관심이 많고 많은 지지를 표방하지만 노동운동가는 아닙니다. 역시, 책임질 것이 없기 때문입니다. 정체성을 부여받는 것은 그 정체성에 합당한 행동의무와 함께 선언의 권리와 책임의 두려움까지 져야 합니다. 그러나 그런것이 내게는 없습니다. 나는 페미니즘이 어떠한 계기로 인해 후퇴한다한들 내 기득권이 공고해질 남성이며, 따라서 나는 페미니스트가 될 수 없습니다. 동시에, 페미니즘이 더 성공적으로 진행된다 하더라도 저는 여전히 남성일 것이므로 역시 페미니스트가 아닙니다. 나는 그 성취와 후퇴 어디에도 책임을 부여받지 않습니다. 그러니 사실, 페미니즘 운동이 어떻게되든 알 바 아닌것도 사실입니다. 물론 사람이 그렇게 칼처럼 '내 일 아니니까'라고 할 수 없기에 이렇게 글을 쓰는 거겠죠. 강남역 사건을 보고 떠올랐던 기억 중 하나는, 데이트를 했던 한 연상의 누나였습니다. 그 누나는 제가 살면서 보아온 여성중 그만큼 강인한 사람을 보지 못했다 싶을 정도로 삶을 충실히 살아가던 사람이었습니다. 그 분에게 느꼈던 연정은 존경에서 시작되었을 만큼 대단했어요. 그런 그녀와 처음으로 영화를 보러 갔을때, 밤 12시가 넘어선 영화관의 엘레베이터에는 한 할아버지가 타고 계셨습니다. 노숙인으로 보이는 자취와, 손에 든 반쯤 빈 소주병과 게슴츠레한 눈빛과.. 불 꺼진 어딘가에서 봤더라면 충분히 무서웠을 법한 그런 인상이었죠. 저는 아무생각 없이 엘레베이터를 타려했고, 누나는 제 팔을 잡으며 다음거 타자는 신호를 보냈습니다. 저는 눈치가 없었고, 에이 괜찮아요. 하면서 함께 엘레베이터를 탔습니다. 제 생각은 그랬어요. 저 할아버지가 해꼬지를 부릴 수도 아닐수도 있고, 엄한 오해를 하고 있는거겠지만.. 만일의 상황이 벌어져도 제게는 문제가 안 될 것이라는 생각. 그렇잖아요. 나이 든 꼬부랑 취객 할아버지와 한창 젊고 덩치 큰 20대 초반의 활기찬 청년.. 결국 아무일 없이 영화관에 도착했지만, 저는 그 때 그 누나의 약간 떨리는 손길과 두려움이 숨겨진 눈빛을 기억합니다. 남성적인 시각에서 이번 일을 봤을때 느끼는 억울함도 사실 공감을 많이 합니다. 그게 일베든.. 아니든.. 공감의 이유는 이렇습니다. '일상의 폭력'은 여성의 전유물이 아니라는거죠. 여성이 약자인게 맞고, 약자 집단에서 또 성별로 약자처럼 여겨지는게 맞는데.. 남성 역시 대다수는 약자집단이기 때문입니다. 물론 그 안에서 여성을 향해 폭력을 하향화하는 사회가 아니냐고 말할 수 있고, 실제로 그럴 수 있지만. 저는 여성이 받는 폭력에 비해 남성이 받는 폭력은 거의 조명되어지지 않는다고 생각합니다. 군대나 대학 똥군기 같은건 그나마 근 10년사이에 좀 이슈화가 되어서 이정도죠. 그것도 총기사고니 자살이니 사고사니 혹은 폭행에 의한 타살이니.. 하는게 수 건이 겹쳐서야 겨우 사람들의 관심을 받았습니다. 남성이 남성의 폭력에 노출되어있다는 사실 역시 통계를 보면 명확합니다. 그러니, 사실 일반적인 남성에서 볼 때 이 일을 갖고 '여성'과 '남성'의 사회적 맥락을 가져오는건 부당하게 느껴질 수도 있습니다. 왜냐면, 우린 '남성'으로 공격은 받지만 '남성'으로 우리를 구성할 권리는 없기 때문입니다. 이건 참 역설적인건데, 정상적 인간은 남성으로 기준지어둔 순간, 여성은 여성으로서의 집단성이 생기지만 남성은 오로지 그 차이로부터 공격받을때에만 '남성'이 될 수 있습니다. 아니면 그냥 보통의 인간이에요. 인간이 인간을 죽인거고, 인간이 인간에게 사고를 친 거죠. 그래서 남성이 살해당하거나 폭력에 노출되는 일들은 '사회적 문제'로 여겨지는 경우가 별로 없습니다. 그러니, 소외와 폭력의 영역에 여성만이 존재한다는건 '남성'으로 분류되는게 어색한 우리에게 있어서도 꺼끌거림은 존재하는 것이겠죠. 문제는 이렇습니다. 여성주의는 '남성'과의 차이에 따른 차별들을 극복하기 위해 생겨난 시각이자, '남성'을 여성과 같은 하나의 집단으로 보기 위한 시도입니다. 즉, 남성과 여성이 아니라 '인간'으로 보자는 선언에 가까운거죠. 그 과정에서 우리가 '차이'를 차별로 볼지, '차이'를 없애는게 맞을지, '차이'를 인정하는게 맞을지를 고민해가며 나아가는 운동이라고 알고 있습니다. 저는 페미니즘을 지지하는 편인데, 그 이유는 사실 이렇습니다. 성평등화가 이뤄져서 남성의 기득권만큼이나 남성에게 부여된 제도적/문화적 의무좀 싹 해체시켜달라는 거에요. 흔히 남성을 가장이라고 합니다. 아주 가부장적이고 시대착오적인 생각이죠. 그런데 실제로 많은 남성노동자들이 해고의 위기에 처하고 가정을 향해 금전적 책임을 지지 못했을때 가정이 파괴되거나 자살하거나 하는 경우는 매우 흔합니다. 여성을 억압하는 문화적 굴레에 성적 대상화가 있다면, 남성을 억압하는 굴레에는 남성이기에 얻었던 기득권과 함께 주어진 남성으로서의 책임들이 있습니다. 이게 잘못됐다는걸 알지만, 이게 '현실'에 벌어지는 일이죠. 그러니, 저는 이 일에 대해 지속적으로 젠더의 맥락을 중심으로 놓는것에 조심스러워집니다. 폭력에 대한 불안감? 서바이브와 라이브의 차이? 에이. 남성이 그런 불안감 없이 산다고요? 오히려 저는 남성으로 태어나서 살아오는 내내 그것을 내면화 시켜야 했던걸로 기억합니다. 서바이브를 라이브로 받아들여야하고, 강자의 폭력을 내면화하는것요. 남성이 처음부터 그런 것들이 없었을까요? 오히려 거세된 것에 가깝겠죠. 물론 그런건 있습니다. 남자니까 위험계수가 좀 떨어질 수도 있다는 것. 물론 가불가의 차이는 분명합니다. 가령 '스스로를 지키키위해' 무도나 호신계열 스포츠를 본격적으로 오랜 시간 진행해온 '남성'은 우발적, 돌발적, 계획적 폭력의 대상에 있어서 비교불가한 방어력을 얻을겁니다. 남성이든 여성이든.. 하지만 이게 가능한건 거의 남성이죠. 남성은 동네 체육관 탑급 정도면 가능한 일인데, 여성은 '국대'정도는 되어야 비슷한 취급을 받는 셈이죠. 이렇게 지리한 이야기를 하게 된 연유는 이렇습니다. 우린 왜 '우리의 폭력'에 무감각하고, 동시에 '우리의 폭력'을 지우려 하는걸까. 남성은 자신들이 노출된 일상적인 폭력성에 '둔감하도록' 학습받아왔습니다. 폭력이 그들의 전유물이듯(여성주의의 입장대로라면) 폭력 역시 그들에게 항시 위협적으로 느껴졌던 상수죠. 남학교를 진학해왔던 제게는 (심지어 온순하기 짝이없다던 동네의) 그게 현실이었습니다. 그런데 재밌는건, 남성들의 폭력은 철저하게 하향식 학습이라 '저항'의 무의미함부터 찾는다는 겁니다. 이 폭력을 없애자! 가 아니라, 이 폭력으로 이익을 얻을 수 있는 사람이 되자! 에 가까워요. 반에서 아이들을 억압하는 1인이 될 수 없다면, 그 주변부에라도 있자거나. 군대나 대학 똥군기 다 비슷하죠. 내가 겪은 악습을 철폐해 버리는 순간 내가 겪어온 악습의 고통들은 없어져 버립니다. 내가 버틴건 나도 그러기 위해서인데. 하는 감정은 아주 익숙한 부분이죠. 어릴때 개고생한다. 신입이니까 구른다. 후배가 구른다. '구르고 카바치고' 같은 구호는 너무나 일상적입니다. 그러니까 이런 상황의 남성들에게 여성주의는 너무 이질적인 겁니다. 여성들에게 성차로서 가해진 남성들의 은밀한 폭력들은 분명 '성차'로서 존재하는 지독한 공포이자 불안이고 괴로움입니다. 그럼 우리는? 이란 생각 역시 당연한거겠죠. 왜냐면 남성들은 그 악의 고리 속에 적응하는 것이 의무적인 것처럼 문화적으로 구성되어 버렸기 때문이니까요. '남성' 이니까. 경쟁과 전투와 권력관계에 잘 어울리고 그런 시스템에 적응해나가야 하는게 당연한 성별이니까. 그렇다보니 우리는 눈 먼 장님이 되어버린겁니다. 폭력의 구도를 함께 없애면 될 일인데 그럴 생각을 하지 못하는거죠. 저는 근데 여성주의에도 일반적인 한남충들이(저도 한남충이지만) 연대할 수 없다는 부분도 이해는 갑니다. 왜냐면 여성들의 입장에서 가해자의 문화는 남성의 문화인데, 남성의 문화는 남성에게도 가해자란 말이에요. 남성집단에서도 가해자보다 피해자의 집단이 훨씬 큰데, 그러니 남성에게 '폭력을 없애자' 거나 '그러지 말아주세요' '침묵하지 말아주세요' 하는 말에 엉뚱한 대답을 하게 되는거죠. '난 안그래.' 사실 같이 싸우면 되는건데. 여성주의도 그렇죠. '여성'이라는 맥락의 구체성을 위해 굳이 '함께'라는 언어를 숨기니까요. '둘 다'라고 안합니다. 이건 성차의 문제고 구별지어 드러냈을때 문제가 명확해진다는거죠. 맞습니다. 정규직과 비정규직의 문제도 사실 똑같아요. 구별지으면 문제는 더 도드라지고 해결책도 구체화되죠. 하지만 정규직과 비정규직은 결국 같은 노동계급이었고 연대하지 않고서는 서로의 이해를 위해 서로에게 창을 겨눠야만 했었죠. 왜냐면 이렇게 파편화 시켜 이익을 보는 '가해자'들은 명백히 다른 계급에 있거든요. 이를테면, 여성과 남성 이전에 갖고 있는 권력적 층위들이요. 하지만 이렇게 되면 '성차'가 불분명해지니까. 싸움의 방향이 애매하고 집단의 결속이 애매해지니까. 저는 이게 맞는 점과 틀린 점 두 가지가 공존한다고 생각해요. 여성의 당사자 운동으로서 분명히 맞는데, 폭력의 해체에 대한 문화운동으로서는 아니라는 입장이죠. 결국 정규직과 비정규직은 연대하지 않으면 이길 수 없다는 것. 남성과 여성 역시 '연대'하지 않으면 이 상황은 사라지지 않는다는것이 자명한데, 맥락을 구체화 시키는 순간 연대의 개념과는 약간 달라진단 말이에요. 왜냐면 남성은 여성에 대한 성차적 폭력의 해소는 이를테면 기득권의 해체이고, 정의롭고 당연한 문제지만 동시에 자신들이 겪는 문화적 폭력의 상황들은 여전히 가려진 채 있다는 점이죠. 실제 페미니즘 공부에서는 남성이 노출당한 폭력 역시 해체의 대상으로 봅니다만, '여성주의운동'은 그렇게 진행되기 쉽지 않죠. 왜냐, '우리가 이미 실질적으로 성차에 의해 피해받고있는데.' 하는 당사자성 때문에요. 근데, 그럼 당사자운동의 해결이 외부와의 연대인게 분명한 상황에서 자신들의 당사자성이 하나의 정당성으로 부여되는 순간 외부와의 연대 역시 애매해지는거죠. 우리가 정당하니까 우리에게 붙어! 맞는 말인데.. 그럼 너희와 연대하는데 우리 문제에는? 했을때에는 애매하잖아요. 사실 메갈이니 워마드니 하던 넷 급진 페미니즘의 확산은 이 구체성을 철저하게 구체화해서 남성을 타자집단으로 만들었기 때문에 가능한 이슈화 였잖아요. 우리 문제가 더 중요해. 우리 문제가 더 차별적이야. 우리 문제가 더 약자야. '우선순위'를 정해야만 할 때 이것은 분명 가치있는 질문입니다. 그런데 지금 이런 폭력의 문제는 '우선순위'로는 해결되지 않는다는 거에요. 삼성보다 더 나쁜 대우를 받는 기업들의 노동자들이 위기라고해서, 무노조경영의 노조탄압이 이뤄지는 삼성의 노동자들이 위기가 아닌가요? 그들이 더 힘든 노조들을 위해 희생해야 하나요? 현대차/중공업 노조가 민주노총에서 계속 각자노선을 가고싶어 하는 이유가 왜일까요? 자기네들이 조합비 제일 많이내고 상경투쟁이든 울산투쟁이든 민주노총에서 필요한 일들 그렇게 떠맡아서 하는데도, 노총 내에서조차 '현대차 현중은 잘나가니까 그정돈 책임져야지'해서 그렇단 말이에요. 이번에도 그런 얘기가 있더군요. 너네가 아프다고 우리가 덜 아픈건 아니다. 여성들의 입장이었는데.. 반대로 얘기해도 똑같은거죠. 우리가 덜 아프다고 우리가 안아픈거 아니라고. '당사자성'이란 그래서 양날의 칼인거에요. 약자인거, 차별받는거. 실존적 위기인거 인정하지 않는 사람이 얼마나 있을까요? 그게 우리에게도 있다고 했을때 '그건 별 문제가 아냐'라는 타자적 스탠스를 취했던 집단이 연대를 얘기하는거. 쉽게 동의할 수 없는거에요. 보통사람이라면.. 이런 지리한 문제들은 그래서 성별의 차이에 의해 맥락을 도드라지게 하는 것도 중요하지만 동시에 우리가 폭력의 하향평준화를 하는 것 역시 조심해야돼요. 이를테면 강남역에 나간 일베들이나 남혐이야 남혐! 하는 사람들이죠. 어차피 이런 폭력들(문화적이고 실존적인)은 양성에 존재하고 그게 여성에게 좀 더 다양한 방식으로, 반면에 남성들에게는 더 직접적 방식으로 존재한다는 점에서 서로에게 문제가 되는 상황이잖아요. 그러니 이러한 위계와 폭력, 권력에 의한 문제들을 '성차'의 맥락에서도 바라보되 동시에 '사회'의 맥락에서도 바라보아야 한다는거에요. 그래야 양 성에 부여된 폭력과 의무, 책임의 굴레들을 벗어날 거 아니겠어요? 이건 딱히 맥락을 지우려거나 이상론을 얘기하고자 하는게 아니에요. 그렇지 않으면 영원히 갈등을 봉합할 수 없을거라는거에요. 언제까지 내가 아닌 타인의 문제까지 가슴깊이 받아들일 도덕적 감수성이 뛰어난 사람들만 찾아 다닐거에요? 세상에 안그런 사람이 훨씬 더 많은데. 저는 여성문제에 공감 못하는 남성 만큼이나 남성문제에 그게 대수냐고 반응했던 여성들 분명히 기억합니다. '미러링'이요? 에이, 말은 똑바로해야죠. 그러고 싶었던걸 그럴 수 있게된 것 뿐이잖아요. 5천자에 걸쳐서 제가 페미니스트가 아니라 한남충이라는 사실을 증명하니 기분이 좋지 않네요. 하지만 어쩌겠어요. 저는 안타깝게도 제가 노출된 폭력과 문화적 굴레가 여성의 성차적 굴레들보다 더 위기감있게 느껴지는 이기적인 사람입니다. 저는 페미니즘이 지향하는 성차의 차별을 없애는데에 동의하는 만큼, 순서와 상관없이 남성에게 씌워진 성적 굴레들과 남성 여성을 불문하고 일어나는 폭력적 문화들을 해체하고 싶어요. 남성들이 남학교나오고 군대다녀오고 그놈의 사회생활하면서 '피해'를 내면화하고 폭력의 구조가 너무 거대하다보니 자기들 안으로 받아들여야만 했던 사회의 기형적 문화들을 바꾸고 싶어요. 강남역은 분명한 여혐사건이지만, 동시에 그건 항시 존재했던 폭력의 상수이기도해요. 그러니 저는 폭력의 상수 역시 우리가 바라봐야할 문제라고 생각해요. 남성들이 여혐사건이 아니라고 말하는건 잘못되었지만, 여혐사건만은 아니다 라고 하는 것 까지 매몰되는 순간 이 문제는 성차의 맥락이 갖는 구체성이 다른 문제의 혐의 역시 가려버리는 거라고 생각해요. 강남역 사건에대한 더 구체적인 상황들이야 제가 언급할건 없을 것 같고.. 저는 전에도 리플에서 언급한 것 같이 워마드의 운동방식에 대해(기반사상이아니라) 지극히 부정적인 입장이지만 어쨌든 누군가의 죽음에 의해 먼저 행동해 준다는 점에서 마음의 빚이 생긴 기분이라 막 욕하고 싶진 않아요. 그들의 방식 역시 그들의 생존을 위해 이해가 가고.. 다만 누군가는, 그 집단에서든 외부에서든 누군가는 그럼에도 불구하고 쓴 물을 삼켜내야만 함께할 수 있는 상황을 만들어 볼 여지를 만드는거겠죠. 부디 서로의 담화가 그 쓴 물을 삼키려는 사람들까지 집어삼키지 않았으면 좋겠어요. 그래도 제가 그들에게 이 이상의 할 말은 없는게, 첫 문단에서 말했듯이 저는 페미니스트일 수 없으니까요. 스물 세살 꽃다운 나이에 누군가의 혐오와 악의에 의해 세상을 강제로 떠나야 했던 고인의 명복을 빕니다. 다음 세상에는 남자로 태어나라는 말 대신에 다음 세상에 다시 여자로 태어나더라도 '여자'라서 불안하고 힘들어하지 않아도 되는 세상을 만드는 것이 살아'남'은이들과 살'려'달라는 이들의 책임이라 생각합니다. 부디 우리가 이 책임만큼은 외면하지 말고, 서로에게 지워진 폭력과 성의 굴레를 직면하길 바래봅니다. 이만 줄입니다.
