이번 사건과 관련해서 몇 가지 생각을 정리해봤습니다. 그래서 [정치/사회] 카테고리가 아니고 [일상/생각]입니다. https://new.redtea.kr/?b=3&n=997 찾아보니 예전에 메갈리아(당시는 워마드가 탄생하기 전이고 메르스 갤러리에서 메갈리아로 바뀐지 얼마 안되던 시점이었지요)에 관해 위와 같이 두 개의 해석을 제시한 적이 있습니다. 그 이후 아무래도 2번(최악으로 부정적인 해석과 예측)으로 가겠다 싶었거든요. 그리고 이번에 이런 비극이 벌어졌고, 추모의 현장은 정치의 현장으로 바뀌었습니다. (경찰수사결과 말 그대로 여성혐오는 갖다 붙인거고 그냥 미친자의 살인이었습니다. 그러나 그럼에도 불구하고 미친자조차 그 칼 끝이 약자인 여성을 향했다는 부분을 간과해서는 안될 것 같습니다.) 저는 '추모'와 '장례'는 가장 큰 정치적인 폭발성을 가진 공간이 될 수 있고 그게 꼭 나쁘지만은 않다고 생각합니다. 마스터충달님이 쓰시는 관련글에 상당부분 동의하지만, 이 부분에서는 의견이 갈리는 것 같습니다. 그러한 추모와 장례의 정치화를 통해 사회에 대한 문제제기와 변화의 추동은 언제나 존재해왔습니다.(다만 이런 과정은 매우 조심스러워야 할 것입니다. 유족들의 상처에 소금을 뿌리지 말아야한다는 점은 특히 중요하죠) 어쨌든, 워마드는 오프라인으로 뛰쳐나왔고 조직화 했으며 사실상의 시위를 벌이고 있습니다. 저는 페북과 트위터를 끊은지 오래됐지만, 대충 올라오는 글들을 보니 "남성이 '잠재적 가해자'라는 것을 인정하겠다"는 남성들이 등장하고 있습니다. 많은 언론들은(심지어 보수 언론까지도) 워마드의 시위와 추모의 결합을 흥미로운 현상으로 제시하면서 때론 긍정적인 태도를 취하기도 합니다. 이렇게 한국사회는 한 발 더 성평등한 사회로 진전되는 것일까요? 인터넷의 급진적 페미니즘은 드디어 여혐을 미러링하는 여혐혐의 전략을 통해 최악의 성불평등 국가 헬조선에서 하나의 진보를 이뤄낸 것일까요? 제가 위에 링크를 건 제 예전 글에서 '최고로 긍정적으로 해석하고 예측했던 1번의 방향'으로 가고 있는 것일까요? 1. 1990년대 대학내 급진적 페미니즘과의 연속성 사실 '남성을 잠재적 가해자'로 보는 시선은 그리 새로운 것이 아닙니다. 1990년대 중후반, NL주사파에 맞서던 PD운동권은 마치 68혁명때의 젊은이들이 그랬던 것처럼, 동성애/성평등/인권/환경 등의 문제를 제기하며 자신을 기존의 운동권과 차별화하며 여성주의와 적극적으로 결합합니다. 이때부터 여성주의는 많은 '진보적 지식인' 혹은 '좌파 엘리트'들이 반드시 공부해야하는 영역이 됩니다. 저도 그 중간에서 어느정도 여성주의에 대한 공부를 하게 된 경우입니다. 여성주의는 점차 영역을 확장하기 시작합니다. 많은 동의도 존재했어요. '먹물'이라는 남자들은 대부분 자신의 삶을 돌아보고 반성할 기회도 갖게 됩니다. 이렇게 힘을 얻은 여성주의자들 중 일부는 한 발씩 더 내딛습니다. 그리고 이런 형식의 대자보가 붙기 시작합니다. [성평등한 세상을 위해, 성폭력 없는 세상을 위해 남성이 해야할 일] 이 목록에는 엘리베이터에 여성이 혼자 먼저 타고 있으면, 당연히 먼저 올려보내주고 자신은 나중에 타야 한다는 조항도 있었고, 밤에 길을 갈 때 앞에 여성이 가고 있으면 그 여성이 사라질때까지 기다렸다가 가야 한다는 얘기가 써있었습니다. 그 외에도 굉장히 많았는데, 그중에는 좀 '너무한다' 싶은 것도 있었죠. 뭐 전반적인 논리는 '남성은 잠재적 가해자'로 보일 수 있고 여성에게 위협과 불편이 될 수 있으니 최대한 배려하라는 것이었습니다. 두 가지 생각이 들었습니다. 여성들이 일상에서 겪는 공포가 상당한 것일 수 있다는 깨달음이 그 첫번째 였고, '내가 잠재적 가해자일 수도 있구나'라는 것이 두번째 생각이었는데, 이건 매우 기분이 나쁜 것이었습니다. "뭐야 그럼 난 남자로 태어난 게 죄야?"라는 생각이 불현듯 든 것이지요. 하지만 그 얘기를 함부로 표출하긴 어려웠습니다. 저는 '마초'로 매도당하기 싫었고 '쿨한 지식인 엘리트'여야 했으니까요. '지식인'이고 나발이고가 얼마나 웃긴 얘긴지는 뭐 졸업하고 세상살면서 알게 됐지만요. 어쨌든 위와 같은 논의는 기본적으로 급진적 페미니즘 내에 존재하던 한 지류에서 지속적으로 흘러나왔습니다. 인터넷 특유의 공격성과 익명성은 이것을 지난 10여년간 한국 사회에서(인터넷을 중심으로)확산돼 온 '여혐현상' 등에 대한 반격의 무기로 바꿔냅니다. 그래서 뭔가 새로운 거 같지만 새롭지는 않은 내용인 것이죠. 다만 자칭 '미러링'을 통해 등장하다보니 인터넷 특유의 '공격성 확대'현상과 맞물리면서 뭔가 더 무시무시해지긴 했습니다. 저런 다소간의 심리적 '불편함'을 느끼면서도 그 어떤 불만도 제기하지 못했던 많은 사람들. 아마도 그 이전 세대 여성, 즉 자신의 어머니 세대가 겪어야 했던 가부장 억압구조의 한국 사회에 자신은 '성적 강자'인 남성으로 존재한다는 그 부채의식이 작용했을 것입니다. 뭐 사람마다 다르겠지만요. 2. '양극화'와 함께 불어온 혐오의 바람 1990년대는 한국사회에 리버럴리즘의 세례가 내린 시기였고, 담론은 풍성했으며 여러면에서 '진보의 시대'였습니다. 사람들은 미래를 낙관하고 있었고 IMF 외환위기라는 처절한 사태를 겪은 뒤에도 사람들은 '노무현'이라는 상징을 통해 자신들의 자유주의적 낙관과 기대를 뿜어냈습니다. 그런데, 대한민국의 희망과 낙관주의는 노무현시대에서부터 비로소 꺾이게 됩니다. 경제성적표를 위해 김대중 정부시절부터 '소수 재벌 위주'로 재편한 신자유주의 경제체제는 양극화를 만들어내고 있었고, 어차피 고도성장기가 끝난 마당이었기에 엄청난 성장 뒤에 조금씩 나눠지는 낙수효과도 기대하기 어려웠습니다. 그런데 1990년대 말 이뤄진 '군가산점폐지'는 취업시장 특히 안정적 공무원과 교사 등의 직업을 찾던 남성들에게 '군대가서 고생한 걸 하나도 보상 못받는다'라는 '억울함'을 심어줍니다. 이게 기본적으로 낙관이 팽배하고 경제가 잘 돌아갈때에는 너그럽게, '맞다 내가 남성으로서 워낙 유리한 위치에 있는 걸 감안하면 굳이 저 가산점을 받을 필요가 없는 것'이라고 생각하겠지만, 자기 코가 석자가 되고 여성들에게 '좋은 일자리'를 많이 내주게 되는 상황이 되자 다들 여기에 '꽂혀서' 부들부들 하게 되는 것이지요. 그들의 잘못이라고 보기 어려워요. 저도 군대 다녀왔고 그 뭔가 모를 억울함은 있으니까요. 그런 와중에 여러가지 '억울함이 뭉치고 뭉쳐서' 인터넷을 중심으로 '된장녀'라는 담론이 확산되고 이 담론은 나중에 '김치녀'라는 극도의 혐오적 표현으로 변질돼 일베 등에 의해 퍼져나갑니다. 자신이 선택하지 않은 정체성에 대한 혐오 만큼 부당한 게 어디있습니까. 이 공격이 생각보다 강했고, 많은 여성들은 '나는 된장녀가 아니다', '김치녀가 아니다'라는 것을 입증하기 위해 노력해야 하는 상황마저 생깁니다. 워낙 프레임이 강했기 때문이지요. 혐오표현의 공격을 받은 사람들이 즉 피해자들이 또 한 번 수고스럽게 자신을 구차하게 옹호해야하는 슬픈 상황이 됐지요. 이 지점에서 많은 남성들은 '여성에 대한 공격과 혐오'를 종종 드러내거나 조롱하는데, 여기에 동조했던 많은 이들은 결국 '구조를 공격하기 어려우니까 쉽고 편하게 약자를 공격한다'는 유혹에 빠진 것이 아닐까 싶습니다. 물론 그걸 극단적 형태로 사회 전체의 모든 약자를 대상으로 삼은 게 일베였고요. 3. 반격? 이 혐오의 바람이 오랜 시간 계속 불던 와중에, 결국 그 반격이 메르스갤러리로부터 시작됩니다. 시작은 저는 나쁘지 않았다고 봅니다. 자주 밝혔지만, 여성을 향한 공격적 표현과 혐오표현이 얼마나 기분나쁘고 파괴적인 것인지 말 그대로 남성인 저도 확실히 알 수 있게 해줬기 때문이지요. 그런데 말입니다, 저는 여기에서 미러링은 따로 계속 하고 뭘 하든 상관 없는데, 이게 '하나의 운동'이 되면 안되는 것이었다고 생각이 듭니다. 운동에는 지향점이 있어야 하고 나름의 도덕적 우위를 확보할 수 있어야 하는데, '인권감수성'과 만나지 않은 미러링의 방식은 자꾸만 사람들이 그들을 일베와 동급으로 생각하게 만들어버립니다. 그리고 기본적으로 메갈리아(현 워마드)의 동력은 '집단적 공격이 주는 쾌감'이 꽤 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있는데, 이거는 결코 약화되지 않고 순화되지도 않거든요. 그럼 여기저기에서 문제가 생기고 '여성주의'담론이 정작 중요하게 받아안아야할 숙제는 지워집니다. 일베한테는 '정의'를 요구할 수 없지만, 여성주의는 그 자체로 '정의로움'을 간직하고 있어야 지속성이 있고 문제해결능력이 생길텐데 말입니다. 그래서 제가 종종 이게 결국 여성주의 전반에 안좋은 영향을 끼칠 가능성이 있다고 밝혀왔던 겁니다. 뭐 어떤분은 이에 대해 "처음으로 공격을 받아보니 당황해서 어쩔 줄 몰라 오지랖을 떠는 자유주의 지식인 남성의 전형"이라는 식으로 비판했지만 말입니다. 4. 남/녀 프레임의 한계는 명백하다. 남/녀프레임은 참 쉽습니다. 흑백논리적이고 딱 세상에서 50대 50의 싸움을 하기 좋은 구도잖아요. 기본적으로 엄대엄인 갈등구조라서 불만 붙이면 타오르지요. 그래서 폭발력이 세지만, 그렇기 때문에 별로 해결할 수 있는 게 없어요. 기존의 수많은 여성주의자/페미니스트들이 '여성해방이 곧 가부장적 구조하에서 가해자이자 또한 피해자로서 고통받는 남성의 해방이기도 하다'라는 주장을 해온 것은, 남성과 여성의 대결구도로는 자본주의의 모순구조, 기본적으로 한 사회 공동체가 갖고 있는 위계와 폭력의 구조, 그리고 그것들과 중층적으로 맞물려 발현되는 성차별과 성폭력의 문제를 해결할 수 없다고 생각했기 때문일 겁니다. 워마드의 저 위대한 활동이 과연 우리가 일상에서 마주하는 수많은 폭력의 상황들에 어떤 변화를 가져올 수 있을까요? 남자화장실에서 가장 은밀한 부위를 내놓고 가장 은밀한 '배변'행위를 하고 있는 남성에게 걸레를 밀고 들어오는 여성 미화원. 그 상황 자체는 서서 일을 보고 있는 남성과, 시간에 쫓겨 부당하게 '남자화장실을 배정받은 채', 화장실을 막아놓지도 못한 채 청소라는 과업을 해야만 하는 여성노동자 모두에게 매우 '성폭력'적인 상황입니다. 현대차 파업을 통해 '밥집 아줌마들'은 잘렸고 기성 정규직 노동자들만 살아남았다면 이건 남녀의 문제입니까? '비정규직'의 문제에 '여성'노동자에 대한 차별 문제가 함께 들어가 있는 것이지요. 모 호텔에서 일하던 비정규직 여성들이 관리자에게 배를 차인 사건은 남자가 여자에게 가한 폭력으로만 봐야할 까요? 아니지요. 남자도 쪼인트 까이고 두들겨 맞았을 겁니다. 그게 바로 '갑질'이거든요. 5. 그래도 남는 슬픈 현실들 한국사회는 1990년대~2000년대 초반까지 '성차별'과 관련해 많은 진보를 이뤄내기 전까지는 정말 미친듯이 성차별적인 사회였습니다. 대기업에서 여성들은 커피를 타야했고, 남자와 달리 유니폼을 입어야했으며 결혼을 하면 당연히 퇴사를 해야했어요. 공기업/대기업/중소기업 할 것 없이 전부 다 그랬죠. 수많은 페미니즘, 그와 연대했던 수많은 사회운동들. 그 성과는 여성비례대표제, 각 대기업의 육아휴직 제도, 여성임원의 등장 등 '바뀐 세상'을 만들어 냈습니다. 그런데 이러한 진보의 수혜는 사회 상층부와 대기업/공조직 등에만 존재할 뿐, 아래로 내려가질 않고 있어요. 지금 대기업에서도 여전히 문제 해결이 막히는 경우도 종종 발생하지만, 어쨌든 성폭력이나 성희롱을 행하는 남성은 거의 매장되거나 큰 불이익을 받는 경우가 많습니다. 그런데 중소기업에서, 대기업 내 비정규직 여성들에게 일상적으로 행해지는 성희롱과 폭력. 이는 더하면 더해졌지 별로 해결될 기미가 안보입니다. 강자와 약자의 문제, 구조의 문제로 풀어야만 풀릴 것들입니다. 그리고 지금 몇 몇 언론에서 흥미위주로 다루고 있는 이 사건(추모와 관련한 갈등)은 사실 언론 입장에서는 그리 중요한 사건도 아닙니다. 곧 잊혀져요. 젊은 사람들 사이에서는 뿌리 깊은 상처만 남긴 채 그렇게 끝날 겁니다. 그리고 대한민국 기득권과 주류사회는 사실 이런거에 별 관심이 없어요. 이 담론을 이끌고 주도했던 사람들은 그럼에도 불구하고 '먹물'들일텐데, 어디선가 평론을 하고 글밥을 먹으면 그럭저럭 살아갈 겁니다. 그래서 슬픕니다. 지금 한국사회에 큰 파장을 일으켰다는 생각이 들 수 있고, 뭔가 성과가 나온다는 생각이 들수도 있겠지요. 그래서 위험합니다. 혐오의 방식과, 남녀프레임으로 해결할 수 없는 문제는 고스란히 남고 '공격의 쾌감'만이 존재한다면, 그 누구의 승리도 아닌 것이지요. 그리고 혹시나 불어올 지 모르는 역풍은 어떻게 해야할지요. '내가 잠재적 가해자임을 인정하겠다'라는 선언을 몇몇 남성들이 하고 다니는 게 정말 이 세상을 안전하고 더 평등하게 만들 수 있는 것일까요? 6. 정리하며 한 여성의 어이없는 죽음. 우리 사회는 안전한가? 라는 질문을 던지고 '여성을 포함한 물리적 힘의 약자'들을 어떻게 사회가 보호할 것인가라는 과제로 넘어가야할 이야기였습니다. 공용화장실의 문제, 아니 한국에서 화장실을 비롯한 남녀가 구분해 사용하는 시설들의 안전문제와 평등성 문제. (급하다고 휴게소에서 남자화장실 뛰어들어오는 중년여성들을 무작정 무개념이라고 욕할게 아니라 애초에 여성을 위한 시설물이 충분히 마련돼 있지 않은 점을 문제삼아야 하듯이) '여성에 대한 혐오'가 왜 존재하는지 파악하고, 어떻게 이런 말도 안되는 혐오를 없앨 것인지. 다른 소수자에 대한 혐오와 함께 어떻게 해결할 것인지. 사실상 이민을 받는 국가가 돼 나날이 늘어나는 새로운 한국인들에 대한 정서적 차별, 제도적 차별은 어떻게 할 것인지. 그들에 대한 혐오가 경제가 어려우질 수록 강해질텐데, 애초에 이걸 어떻게 막을 것인지. 여전히 우리는 논의해야할 게 많고 해결해야할 문제가 많습니다. 성차별 해소와 성평등 확립, 성폭력 예방 등은 바로 그 많은 과제 중 매우 중요한 것 중 하나입니다. 우리는 이제 이렇게 고민하고 논의를 진전시켜나가야 하지 않을까요? 이상 여러가지 잡상들을 모아 쓴 긴 잡글 마치겠습니다. 하루하루 새로운 사건이 등장하다보니 이번 일에 대한 인식도 조금씩은 변하고 있는데 어제 밤 이후로는 '바보들의 대행진'으로 보이네요. 저렇게 극단적으로 남성혐오를 부추기고 저주하면 필연적으로 남녀성대결의 고착화로 이어질텐데 그 구도 속에서 여성운동이 승리할 가능성이 만분지일이라도 될런지 의문입니다.
강자의 협력(그게 관용이건 반성이건 타협이건) 없이 약자들만의 움직임으로 승리를 거둔 운동이 있나 싶은데 도대체 저 치들은 뭘 믿고 남자 전체를 적으로 만들고 싶어 안달인지 모르겠습니다. 여기가 구라파도 아니고 극단적인 병영국가이자 보수적 성관념이 지배하고 있는 대한민국이라는 걸 망각하고 있는 건지...
