*이 글은 한 활동가의 글입니다 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 열아홉이던 2001년 6월 어느날. 나는 어머니를 따라 대전 대덕에 있는 청소년수련관에 갔었다. ‘노무현을 사랑하는 사람들의 모임’ 창립 1주년 행사가 열린 날이었다. 나는 처음으로 정치인을 봤고, 연설을 들었다. 참으로 격정적이고 멋있는 연설이었다. 후로 노무현이란 정치인을 무척 존경했었다. 그가 쓴 링컨에 대한 책을 감명 깊게 읽었고, 또 수능 공부에 한창이었던 2002년엔 과거 3당 합당에 반대하며 ‘이의 있습니다!’하고 외치는 모습을 담은 사진을 방 어딘가에 걸어두기도 했다. 스무살에 처음 치룬 대선에서 나는 ‘인간 노무현’을 좋아하면서도 민주노동당의 지지자였다. 대선 당시 노사모 사람들은 ‘권영길 사표론’을 내밀며, ‘진보정당은 아직 이르다’, ‘지역주의 먼저 척결하고 노동 문제는 나중에’라고 이야기했다. 그렇다. 15년 전에도 그들은 ‘사표론’을 꺼내들었고, ‘나중에’라고 했더랬다. 당시만 해도 확실히 민주당의 이념과 진보정당인 민주노동당의 이념은 다르게 느껴졌고, 둘 다 필요하다고 여겼던 나는 내내 혼란스럽기만 했다. 그럼에도 내게 노무현 당선은 기쁜 일이었고, 열성적 지지자였던 부모님이 기뻐해서 덩달아 기뻐했다. 어떻게 보면 모순적인 일이었지만, 그럼에도 김대중 정권 때보다는 낫지 않겠느냐는 기대가 확실히 있었다. 하지만 불행히도 이런 팬심은 오래가지 않았다. 이듬해 겨울부터 두산중공업에서 한 노동자가 손배가압류에 절망해 스스로 목숨을 끊었다는 소식이 전해졌다. 김대중 정부에서 만들어진 잘못된 법이 ‘생존’을 위해 절규하는 노동자들을 죽음으로 내몰고 있었다. 취임 직후인 3월에는 이라크 전쟁이 터졌고, 노무현 정부는 파병을 추진했다. 하나 같이 납득하기 어려웠다. 그 즈음, 노사모 역시 탈퇴했다. 당시 꽤 많은 이들이 노사모와의 고별을 선언했다. 그 후로 내 마음은 ‘노사모’로부터 차츰 멀어졌다. 변호사 시절의 노무현, 대통령되기 전까지의 노무현은 존경스러웠지만 당선 이후 노무현 정권의 행보는 내내 실망스럽기만 했다. 대선 시기만 해도 ‘노동3권’, ‘노동자의 눈물을 닦아주겠다’고 했던 노무현 정부는 파견법 등 비정규직을 양산할 수밖에 없는 잘못된 법안을 통과시켰고, FTA 등 신자유주의 드라이브에 속도를 높였다. 정부 주요 요직에는 삼성의 고위급 임원 출신 인사들이 자리를 채웠다. 10년 전 어느 시사주간지의 평가처럼 삼성은 “참여정부의 두뇌이자 스승”이었다. 많은 비정규직 노동자들이 소리치고 울부짖었지만, 평범한 사람들의 삶은 점점 추락해갔다. 2003년 이후 빈부격차는 단 한 번도 좁혀지지 않았다. 부자들과 재벌들은 점점 배를 불렸지만, 우리 평범한 사람들의 삶은 나아지지 않았다. 무엇보다 사회의 희망이 되어야 할 노동자운동은 자기 혁신의 지체와 외부에서의 공격으로 차츰 기울고 있었다. 이는 이명박, 박근혜 정부에 이르기 까지 계속됐다. 진보정당 역시 기울어가는 사회운동과 더불어 조금씩 쇠락했다. 민주노동당이 노동조합들과 함께 독자적인 힘으로 10명의 국회의원을 당선시킨 2004년이 가장 좋았던 시절이었고, 그 후론 내내 추락이었다. 노동자운동, 민중운동 역시 지속적으로 내리막길을 걸었다. 많은 활동가들과 노동자들이 목숨을 걸고 저항했지만 속수무책으로 당하기만 했다. 철도노동자들의 파업은 진압됐고, 비정규직 노동자들의 저항 역시 무참히 짓밟혔다. 노무현은 “노동운동이 죽음으로 항거하는 시대는 끝났다”고 말했다. 하지만 노동자들은 계속 죽어갔다. 어떤 사람은 노동운동의 투쟁 방식이 잘못됐다고 말한다. 노동운동이 ‘노무현의 큰 뜻도 몰라주고’ 비판하기만 했다고 되려 비난한다. 하지만 정작, 당시 노무현 정권이 추진하던 노동 정책이 잘못된 것이냐 아니냐를 따져묻진 않는다. 이건 합리적 태도가 아니다. 노동자들이 조용히 ‘말’과 ‘펜’으로, ‘목소리’로 이야기할 때 노무현 정권은 좀체 듣지 않았다. 그저 거침없이 신자유주의 노동 정책을 밀어붙일 뿐이었다. 지난 선거에서 문재인은 당시의 노동 정책을 반성적으로 평가한다는 언급을 말하긴 했었지만 이보다 구체적으로 말한 바는 없다. 또, 당시 잘못된 법 개정과 자본‧정부의 탄압에 항거해 목숨을 잃은 노동자들에 대해 일언반구 없다. (물론 이를 언급하지 않더라도 새로운 모습을 보인다면 얼마든지 환영이다. 우린 그것을 ‘지켜보고’, ‘감시할’ 책임과 권리가 있다. 주권자라면 그래야 한다.) 한진중공업 고 김주익 노동자는 구조조정과 손배가압류를 동원한 노조 탄압에 항거해 고공농성을 이어가다가 크레인 위에서 목을 매달아 세상을 떠났다. 세원테크 고 이현중 노동자는 경찰과 용역깡패가 함께 휘두른 폭력에 두개골이 함몰되어 몇 달 간 투병하다가 세상을 떠났다. 고 이해남 노동자는 노동자들의 절규와 죽음에 아랑곳 않는 사측과 정부에 항의하며 제 몸에 불을 질러 목숨을 잃었다. 공공부문 비정규직 노동자 고 이용석은 비정규직 노동자의 설움을 위하기는커녕 되려 비정규직 양산하려는 노무현 정부의 법 개악과 공공기관의 노조 탄압에 항거해 종로3가 한복판에서 제 몸에 신나를 부어 불에 타 세상을 떠났다. 조기숙 등 몰지각한 어용지식인들이 뻔뻔하게 노동운동에 대한 훈수를 두려면, 적어도 한번도 '사과'하거나 용서를 구한 적 없는 이 사실에 대해 먼저 제대로 된 입장을 밝혀야 한다. 이후로 노무현-이명박-박근혜 정권에 이르기 까지 정부가 비정규직 노동자들의 차별과 노동조합을 대하는 태도는 대동소이했다. 정권은 바뀌고 한나라당-새누리당과 민주당은 철천지 원수처럼 싸웠지만 적어도 노동자들에게 만큼은 일관되게 억압적이었다. 물론 민주노총이 비정규직과 정규직 노동자의 단결, 노동 현장에서의 여성의 차별 등 문제에 있어서 대단히 훌륭한 성취를 이뤄온 것은 아니다. 민주노총 안에도 다양한 사람들이 있고, 변화는 내 생각과 의지보다 더디기만 하다. 개중엔 자기 사업장만 생각하는 정규직 노동자들이 있는가 하면, 자신의 일자리 위협을 무릅쓰고도 비정규직과 연대하려는 정규직 노동자들도 있다. 나라면? 가족의 생계가 달린 일자리가 위협될 때 과연 그럴 수 있나? 엄청 낙관적이진 않다. 요컨대 민주노총은 부족한 점도 가능성도 많다. 지난 10년 사이 한국사회에서 비정규직 문제를 가장 앞장 서서 고민하고, 투쟁해온 조직 역시 민주노총이다. 최근 2,30대가 많은 사업장의 비정규직 노동자들이 대거 노조를 만든 사례도 있다. 한때 민주노총은 정규직들만의 조직이었지만, 지금은 비정규직 조합원들이 20만 넘게 존재한다. 최근 10년 사이 노동조합을 만들고 민주노총에 가입한 비정규직 노동자가 10만 여명이 넘는다. 이 땅의 여느 정치세력이 이 정도 성취를 이루었는가? 나로선 찾기 힘들다. 물론 부족하다. 20만이 아니라 100만 명은 조직했어야 했다. 그걸 비판하겠다면 비판해도 좋다. 왜 민주노총의 모든 예산을 끌어모아 비정규직 조직화 사업 하지 않느냐고 되묻겠다면, 나 역시 한뜻이라고 하고 싶다. 하지만 이런 민주노총을 비난하고 폄훼한 결론이 비정규직 양산에 앞장 서 온 민주당이라니? 상당히 넌센스다. 자신을 벼랑 끝으로 내몰았던 정치세력이 최소한 자신의 노동과 삶의 위기에 손을 내밀었던 노동조합보다 낫다니? 나로선 이해하기 힘든 난제다.이 역시 극히 일부 지지자들의 그릇된 행동이겠지만, 갑을오토텍 사측을 변호했던 이가 청와대 비서관으로 들어가게 된 것에 대한 민주노총의 비판 성명을 거짓 근거들을 바탕으로 비난하는 모습을 보면 기가 찬다. 금속노조 갑을오토텍지회 노동자들은 누구보다 앞장 서서 비정규직 노동자들과 연대했고, 계약직 노동자들의 정규직화를 위해 스스로 분투한 모범적인 사업장으로 유명하기 때문이다. 갑을 자본은 노동조합이 이렇게 건강하고, 하나로 똘똘뭉쳐 단결하자 어떻게든 밟아 뭉개기 위해 갖은 수단을 다 동원해왔다. 용역깡패를 동원하고, 경찰의 묵인 속에서 노조 죽이기를 지속해왔다. 이런 협잡에 도움을 준 사람이 비정규직과 항상 함께 연대하고 함께 싸워왔으며, 용역깡패와 자본의 탄압에 맞서 싸우는 공장노동자들보다 낫다니? 대체 당신들은 어떤 세상을 바라는 것인가? 열아홉살 나는 처음으로 존경하는 정치인을 만났고, 스무살 나는 열성적 노사모 회원이었다. 그리고 스물한살 이후 대학시절 내내 나는, 소위 ‘민주 정부’와 ‘386 출신 정치인들’의 위선을 알았고, 명멸하기 시작하던 학생운동을 했다. 노무현 전 대통령이 서거했을 때 나는 무척이나 슬펐지만, 한 인간에 대한 애도였지 그의 통치와 정책 모든 것에 대한 지지는 분명 아니었다. 이는 노제 내내 따라가며 울고 또 울었던 어머니 역시 마찬가지다. 외환위기 이래 20년 간 민주당이 얼마나 정의롭고 밑바닥 노동자들과 함께 했는지 알기 어렵다. 구속된 노동자 수만 따져 봐도 김영삼 정부 632명, 김대중 정부 892명, 노무현 정부 1052명이었다. 이는 이명박 정부 때도 비슷했고, 박근혜 정권에 가선 정부가 벌금 먹이기로 전략을 바꿔 구속자 수는 줄었다. 하지만 문재인에 대한 일부 비이성적 지지자들이 굳게 믿고 있는 것과 달리 민주노총과 노동자운동은 그 정권이 어떤 정권이건 누구보다 앞서서 노동자들의 생존과 권리를 위해, 차별과 억압에 맞서기 위해 저항했다. 부족하고 삐걱이며, 내부 개혁은 느렸지만 그렇게 욕먹을 수준은 아니다. 익명의 숲에 뛰어들어 개인의 입신양명과 안온한 삶을 포기하고 고군분투한 많은 활동가들의 헌신 위에 버티고 있는 힘 역시 분명 존재한다. 지난 박근혜 정권 내내, 그리고 박근혜 퇴진 촛불 시위에서 노동자운동과 민중운동은 궂은일을 도맡아 했고, 매주 조직력을 끌어모아 함께 했다. 나는 이것이 훈장 받을만한 일이라고 생각하지 않는다. 헌신으로 점수를 메겨보자고 할 생각도 없다. 하지만 부디 '박근혜 정권 때 대체 뭐했냐'는 소리는 하지마시길. 조사없이 발언 없다. 많은 노동자가 구속됐고, 목숨을 걸고 싸웠다. 내가 있던 삼성전자서비스 노조 역시 여러 비정규직 노동자들이 죽었고, 그보다 많은 노동자들의 헌신과 피울음으로 지켜왔다. 그렇게 모든걸 걸고 싸운 이들이 조합원으로 존재하는데, 지금의 냉소와 비아냥은 너무나도 과도하다. 나는 이런 비아냥을 못들은채할만큼 냉정하지 못하다. 결과적으로 일부 문재인 열성 지지자들의 노동자운동 폄훼 및 비난과 진보언론 죽이기는 이 땅의 민주주의와 진보에도 역행할 뿐이다. 자기 발등 찍어 스스로를 노예로 만들 생각이 아니라면, 냉정하게 현실을 보고 차분한 지지자가 되길 바란다. 그게 합리이고, 이성이고, 최소한 민주주의의 기본이다. 시민들의 참여를 통한 정치란 지지하는 정치인에 대한 무조건적이고 비합리적인 지지가 아니다. 가장 건강한 정치는 시민 개개인이 ‘조직되고’, 동시에 학습과 실천을 통해 비판적 이성을 갖춰 나가는 것이다. 인간애는 공동체를 만들고 가꾸는 일의 기본이지만, 정치는 정치인만이 아니라 지향과 이념을 지지해야, 극단적 순간이나 정치인들이 꺾이거나 실망스러운 모습을 보일 때에도, 시민 자신의 길을 갈 수 있다. 그것이 현대의 위기와 ‘탈정치화’에 맞선 가장 현명한 ‘재정치화’의 길이다. 헌데 오늘날 정치인 개개인에 대한 지지자들에게선 이런 모습이 보이지 않는다. 내 생각에 그건 ‘정치’가 아니라, 그저 팬심일 뿐이다. 나치 독일의 정치와 예술, 대중을 응시하며 ‘정치의 심미화’라 규정하고 비판했던 발터 벤야민은 자신이 창립한 새로운 예술론을 통해 예술이 파시즘적으로 이용되는 상황에 맞설 문화정치학 내지 정치적 미학을 제시하고자 했다. 그는 당시 파시즘이 “정치의 심미화”를 추구하고 있다고 생각했다. 나는 오늘날 우리 매스미디어 공론장 안팎에서 보이는 기괴한 풍경들이 정치의 심미화, 정치의 예능화를 가리키고 있지 않은지 되묻고 싶다. 당신의 정치적 열정이 그런 방식으로 소비되어선 안 된다. 그것은 언제나 자본과 권력으로 배반당할 수밖에 없으며, 항상 정치적 허무주의로 귀결됐음을 기억해야 한다. 현실의 대지에 발을 딛고, 철저하게 역사적 사실과 ‘평범한 민중들’ 자신의 삶에 근거해야 우리 자신의 열정을 소비하거나 배반당하지 않을 수 있다. 정치인들 몇 명이 아니라 자기자신이 자기 삶과 정치의 주인이라고 여긴다면 말이다. 우리의 삶은 그렇게 하찮은 것이 아니다. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 여기서부턴 제 이야기..두서없어 죄송합니다. 제게 김대중과 노무현은 정치적 현실이 아니었습니다. 저의 정치적 현실은 이명박과 박근혜였죠. 김대중 대통령시절 저는 초등학교와 중학교를 다녔고, 노무현 대통령의 임기와 함께 제 고교생활도 끝이 났습니다. 낭만적인 시절이었다고 생각했고, 저는 자유주의자의 입장에서 마음껏 뛰어놀 수 있었습니다. 이상하다고 느낀 것은 우리 가정에서 였습니다. 97년에 명퇴를 당한 아버지는 퇴직금을 부은 자영업에 실패했고, 비정규 경비직을 전전하셨습니다. 어머니는 기울어가는 가세를 막기위해 필사적으로 중소기업의 최전선에서 재무/회계/경리/인사/노무를 통합해서 담당하는 초인적인 업무역량을 발휘해가며 연매출 100억의 회사에서 건강을 버려가며 일했습니다. 그런데도 급여가 나아지거나 생활이 나아지는 모습을 볼 수 없었습니다. 정리해고와 비정규직이 '당연한' 사회의 규칙이었을때 저는 돈을 벌기 시작했습니다. 돈 버는게 더럽게 힘들다는 것을 알게 될 때, 열심히 산 사람들이 죽어나가고 있다는것 역시 비슷한 시기에 우연히 알게 되었습니다. 정리해고도, 비정규직도 당연한 일이 아니라는 것을 알게 되었고 정부와 시대의 간택을 받은 산업에 종사하는 사람과 그렇지 않은 사람들 간에는 엄청난 간극이 벌어지고 있었습니다. 그게 시장의 선택이고 시대의 필연이라는 것이 제게는 영 이상한 일이었습니다. 자유주의자의 입장에서는 받아들일 수 없는 모순과 같았습니다. 왜냐면 도태되는 사람들 역시 자기의 영역에서 자유롭게 스스로를 계발하고 열심히 살아온 사람들이었기 때문입니다. 저는 자유지상주의자가 아니었고, 저런 사람들이 자기도 모르는 새에 도태되고 그 자원이 살아남는 이들의 잔치에 쓰이는 것이 못마땅했습니다. 사실을 알 수 없는 저는 여러 가설속에서 생각을 정리하기 시작했습니다. 그리고 그 가설을 확인하는 과정에서 '알려지지 않은' 비극들을 몇 가지씩 알게 됩니다. 부모님 손을 잡고 은행에 금붙이를 가져다내던 기억이 납니다. 주택은행 2층이었죠. 나라를 살리기 위한 길이라며 뿌듯한 가슴으로 걸음도 당찼습니다. 겨우 '살 만한 시대'인가 싶었고, 지독한 저임금과 과도한 근로환경, 안전과는 동떨어진 산업현장에서 고생한 사람들이 겨우 보답받는 시대였다고 합니다. IMF는 이 모든걸 박살냈고, IMF는 교과서에서 떠드는 '과소비'같은 것과는 달리 해외자본과 거대 기업들의 잘못된 탐욕과 그 관리자들과 관련된 정치, 재계의 잘못된 선택들이 중첩되어 터져버린 사건이었습니다. 열심히 일하고 미래를 그리던 사람들의 삶이 정신없이 박살났습니다. '위기'를 빠져나오기위해 정리해고가 통과되었습니다. 목숨걸고 반대하던 사람들이 죽어나갔지만, 그럴 수 밖에 없는 시대였다고 했습니다. 중학교시절 IMF를 극복했다는 의미를 진정으로 이해한것도 이 때였을 겁니다. 김대중 전 대통령과 노무현 대통령을 많은 사람들이 찬양했습니다. IMF의 그늘로부터 사회를 구한 지도자들, 다시금 경기가 풀리기 시작했고 많은 사람들이 그들을 사랑했습니다. 그러나 97년에 정리해고가 통과되는걸 결국 허락당해야 했던 사람들은 이번엔 비정규직보호법으로 한번 더 양보를 강요당했습니다. 위 활동가분이 쓴 것처럼 정말 많은 노동자가 그렇게 'IMF극복'이라는 청사진 아래에서 사라졌습니다. IMF를 극복했다고 좋아했던 제 어린시절이 구역질이 났습니다. 그 극복을 위해 아버지는 하루아침에 실직자가 되었던 것입니다. 지난 9년의 보수정권동안 노동자들은 어마어마하게 핍박받았습니다. 진영과 산업을 가리지 않았고 세대를 구별하지 않았습니다. 그래서 그 이전에 비교적 탄압에서 자유롭거나 살아남았던 사람들은 너무나 쉽게 이야기합니다. 지난 9년을 비판하기도 바쁜데 그 이전의 과를 왜 따지고 있느냐고. 왜 지난 9년에 대해서는 별 말도 없이 아직도, 혹은 이제와서 국민정부와 참여정부의 과를 따지고 있느냐고. 사실 계속해서 따져왔고 비판해왔지만, 그러다 몇몇이 죽고, 몇몇의 장례를 치루고. 여기저기 분향소가 생겼다 사라지고. 그 사이에 또 누군가가 감옥에 가고. 한 사람의 인생에서 한 가지만 일어나도 어마어마하게 충격적일 일들이 너무 손쉽게 일어났고 너무 손쉽게 가려졌고 사람들은 그러한 탄압과 희생을 아주 쉽게 외면할 수 있었던. 그 시간들을 지내온 사람들이 당신들과 똑같은 평범한 사람이라는걸 생각해보면... 그들에게는 지난 9년과 그 이전의 10년은 계속 삶을 빼앗기는 시간들이었을지도 모릅니다. 그러니 어쩌면, 그 집단 모두가 정신질환을 겪고있다고 해도 이상하지 않을 사람들일지도 모릅니다. 그렇다고 관용으로 다 받아달라는 말이 얼마나 납득할 수 없는 말인지는 잘 압니다. 그러나 본문에서 이야기 한 것처럼 적어도 최소한의 선은 지켜야 한다고 생각합니다. 왜 그들이 극우보수 만큼이나 민주보수를 싫어하게 되었는지, 안그러겠다던 정치인들이 너무나 빠르게 등 돌리고, '어쩔 수 없다'는 말로 많은 사람들의 삶을 내팽개쳤는지. '세월호'와 같은 비극에 슬퍼할 수 있는 감수성이, 어느날 하루아침에 자신의 삶이 무너져서, 어떻게든 자기 삶을 지켜보려다 죽은, 그렇게 파괴된 수많은 가정들과, 그들의 삶이 지녔던 역사가 송두리째 사라진 텅 빈 공간과 상처들에는 그토록 잔인한 자세를 유지할 수 있는지. 이런 것들을 그럴 리 없었다고, 그렇지 않았다고 이야기해선 안될것입니다. 비아냥과 조롱으로 대하기 전에, 어째서 저들이 '비합리적'으로 보일만큼 악다구니를 쓰는가. 정당해보이지 않는 저 말들과 태도는 어디서 생겨난건가. 한 번쯤은 생각해줬으면 좋겠습니다. 그게 받아들여져야만 하는 일은 아니지만, 그렇다고 현재의 중심에 선 민주당 지지자들과 민주당으로부터 괄시와 조롱, 비아냥과 오욕을 들어야 할 만큼 세상이 그들에게 합리적이고 타당한 자세로 서 있었던 적은 없었다는 것 만큼은... 꼭 기억해 줬으면 좋겠습니다. 농담조로 뱉는 '외모패권주의'가 새로운 치안의 형태가 되는 건 아닐지,
'신좌파'라는 이름으로 자리잡을 민주보수 집단이 비정규직 노동자와 성소수자 등 '일부'를
보이지 않는 것으로 만들어 버리는 건(아니 이미 만든 건) 아닌지 걱정되고요.
당분간은 새로운 대통령에 대한 열망이 해소되면서 생긴 열섬현상 같은 거라고 생각하렵니다만,
점점 파시즘화되는 몇몇 인터넷 커뮤니티들을 보면서 답답해지는 요즈음입니다.
