 0. 얼마전 예비군을 다녀왔습니다. 예비군 훈련을 받는 내내 14년전에 봤던 영화 <라이터를 켜라> 가 머리에 맴돌았습니다. 궁금한 마음에 다시한번 보았고, 주인공인 허봉구의 나이가 저와 같은 나이라는 설정에 굉장히 놀라며 이 영화를 다시 한번 곱씹게 되었습니다. 1. <라이터를 켜라> 는 요즘 무한도전으로 얼굴을 보이고 계신 '장항준' 감독의 데뷔작 입니다. 2002년 월드컵이 막 끝나던 7월에 개봉하였고, 같은시기에 개봉하였던 경쟁작들도 쟁쟁했습니다. 맨 인 블랙2 (200만명) , 마이너리티 리포트 (전국 337만명), 스타워즈 에피소드 2 : 클론의 습격 (서울관객 54만), 센과 치이로의 행방불명 (200만)의 경쟁하였습니다. 포스터나 이미지를 보면 뭔가 '뻔한 영화' 라는 느낌이 들지만 <라이터를 켜라>는 130만명의 관객이라는 준수한 성적을 거두고 장항준감독의 다음 작품이 나올수 있는 발판을 마련해 줍니다. 2. 운이 좋은 감독, 아내 김은희 작가 ('싸인', '유령', '3데이즈' '시그널') 에게 얹혀사는 이미지가 형성되었지만, 알고보면 준비된 노력파 인것 같기도합니다. 서울예대 시절 대학 도서관에 있는 대본을 모두 읽어보았고, 학창시절에는 영화 광고문구만 보고 친구들이 좋아할만한 스토리를 하루종일 이야기하며 이야기를 만들곤 했다고 합니다. 신입 FD 에서 운좋게 6개월만에 작가로 거듭나지만 이 또한 준비되어있던 아이디어가 있었기 때문이고, <박봉곤 가출사건>의 첫 시나리오도 운좋게 대종상 후보까지 오르는 쾌거를 거두었고 여러 시나리오를 찾아보고 많은 고민을 한 결과라고 합니다. 3. 작가 출신이지만 아이러니하게도 본인이 쓴 각본이 아닌 '박정우' 감독의 각본으로 첫 연출을 하게됩니다. 박정우 감독은 '나는 소망한다 내게 금지된 것을, 주유소 습격사건, 신라의 달밤, 광복절 특사' 등으로 시네마 서비스의 여러 히트작을 내 놓은 각본가 입니다. 감독 본인이 쓴 시나리오가 아니기 때문에 어쩔수 없이 수정을 가한 부분이 있는데, 깡패 '양철곤'이 가정을 갖게되는 설정. 그리고 허봉구의 어머니와 양철곤의 아내가 한 동내에 산다는 설정은 굉장히 리얼리티가 떨어지며, 김승우, 차승원, 박영규, 이문식, 성지루, 유해진, 강성진 등등의 많은 인물이 등장하는 것은 코미디 이기 때문에 허용되는 것이라고 합니다. 이러한 설정들은 코미디 이기에 가능할 뿐, 현실적으로 볼때 너무 과한것 같다고 장항준 감독이 인터뷰를 통해 이야기 한 적이 있습니다. 4. 음악에는 장항준의 절친인 '윤종신' 이 맡았고, ost에 참여한 아티스트들도 범상치 않습니다. 윤종신, 유희열, 김광진, 하림이 참여하였고 지금에 비하면 '쭈구리(?)' 시절이라고 볼 수 있기에 영화에 담긴 음악들은 허봉구의 애환이 고스라니 느껴지기도 합니다. 집 떠나와 버스타고 어디로 가는지 이등병의 편지와 비슷하다가 살짝 꺾여(?) 버리는 멜로디가 인상적이며, 극중 '허봉구' 의 처지를 잘 이야기하는 노래 가사가 일품인것 같습니다. 이 외에 '담배 한 모금, Spactacle Life' 라는 곡들도 굉장히 인상적이며, 특히 담배 한 모금 이라는 곡에선 윤종신 특유의 미성을 들을 수 있습니다. 5. 장항준 감독은 장진 감독과 굉장한 절친으로 알려져 있는데, 두 감독의 영화에서 보이는 '아이러니' 함은 비슷하지만 다른 양상을 보입니다.  장진 감독의 <아는여자> 에서의 경우 주인공 동치성은 불치병에 걸린줄 알고 자살시도를 하게됩니다. '마라톤' 을 통해 몸에 무리를 오게 하여 자살시도를 하지만, 아이러니하게 5등 상품으로 '김치 냉장고' 를 받는 장면에서 그 특성이 두드러집니다. 자살시도를 '마라톤'으로 택하는 아이러니함이 5등 상품인 '김치 냉장고' 를 받게 되는 결과를 낳은 것이지요. 반면, 장항준은 좀더 대중적인 아이러니함을 사용합니다. 목숨까지 걸며 '그깟 300백언 짜리 라이터' 를 돌려받으려는 아이러니한 고집이 과거 자신의 트라우마를 극복하는 매개체로 사용하게 됩니다. 어쩌면 교훈적일 수도 있는 결과는 감독 자신이 TV에서 연출을 하였던 경험때문에 이러한 차이를 가져오지 않았나 생각됩니다. 6. 30살. 무직. 허봉구. 이 영화는 구밀복검님의 말을 빌려 '명절 영화' 급이라고 표현될 수 있습니다. 그만큼 전형적인 한국 코메디 물이고, 그때 당시 잘나가던 차승원표 코메디 + 조폭 코메디에 장항준이 이끄는 변주 정도로 볼 수 있습니다. 하지만 14년이 지난 지금 제게 떠오르는 이유는 아마도 허봉구의 무식한 '노오오오오력' 인것 같기도 합니다. 주인공과 같은 나이가 되며 허봉구가 느꼈던 집착이 삶의 실오라기 같은 희망이 조금은 이해되기도 하구요. 가볍게 즐길 수 있는 코메디 영화였지만, 지금 와서도 즐겁게 보고 여러가지 생각하게 되는 영화 <라이터를 켜라> 입니다. 더 많은 이야기는 저와 구밀복검, 명주군이 진행하는 '팟케스트 영화계' 에서 만나실 수 있습니다. http://www.podbbang.com/ch/8720 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 133 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 146 Warning: Use of undefined constant vote - assumed 'vote' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 161 0 이 게시판에 등록된 리니시아님의 최근 게시물
