*정당한 비평은 아닙니다. 그냥 가벼운 감상의 다발... 1. 어차피 팝콘 무비니 서사나 주제의식에는 큰 기대 안 했고, 액션이 포인트라고 보았습니다. 허나 시빌 워의 액션은 대단찮다고 생각합니다. 멀리 가지 않아도 작년 극장가를 수놓았던 액션 영화들에 한참 못 미치지요. 일단 <매드 맥스 : 퓨리 로드>야 말할 나위가 없을 것입니다. 대적 불가능이죠. 물론 <매드 맥스 : 퓨리 로드>는 이례적인 영화입니다. 매년 나오는 영화가 아니지요. 하지만 다른 영화들도 시빌 워가 상대하기에 만만치가 않습니다. 예컨대 <미션 임파서블 : 고스트 네이션>의 카 체이스-오토바이 체이스 시퀀스만 해도 클로즈업과 롱샷을 교차시키며 속도감과 긴장감을 과시했는데, 시빌 워 내에서는 대적할만한 씬이 없지요. 또한 <킹스맨>은 농담과 개드립으로 점철된 장난스러운 영화인지라 스릴과는 거리가 멀지만, 그럼에도 교회 내에서의 격투와 결말부에서 사람들의 머가리가 터져나가는 장면의 경쾌함 만큼은 돋보이지요. 작년에 기록적인 흥행 수치를 보였던 <분노의 질주 : 더 세븐>만 하더라도 자동차가 하늘에서 떨어지고, 건물과 건물 사이를 뛰어넘을 때의 인상이 강렬합니다. 창의적이죠. 위와 같은 씬들 정도의 시각적 쾌감을 주는 장면이 시빌 워에 있나 싶습니다. 공항 격투 씬이 이 영화의 대표적인 액션 장면일 텐데, 한참 부족하지요. 결국 기물들 때려 부수고 주변 공간을 아작내는 것을 CG로 묘사하며 막대한 스케일을 과시하는 수준에 머무르는데, 이 정도는 <트랜스포머>에서도 볼 수 있는 것이라 생각합니다. 특히나, <시빌 워>는 기본적으로 아주 다수의 히어로가 출몰하는 능력자 배틀물입니다. 그런 이상, 개성과 장기와 특징이 다른 히어로들의 동작과 전술이 정교하게 맞물리고 호응해야 하면서 동작의 물리적 나열이 화학적으로 화합되어야 합니다. 즉 복수로 한 공간에 존재하는 특수 능력자들의 장기를 남김없이 최대한 활용하여 다양한 동작의 조합과 연계를 만들어내는 총체성과 효율성을 보여주어야 한다는 것이죠. 그런데 <시빌 워> 같은 경우에는 그것이 부족합니다. 히어로들의 능력의 복합적인 조합은 커녕, 개개인의 능력 묘사 부분도 약하지요. 설마 스칼렛 위치의 마법 시연 보고 보고 경도되었을 사람은 없을 듯 싶습니다. 또한 아이언 맨이나 캡틴 아메리카의 액션은 이미 이전의 MCU 시리즈에서 보여준 인습적인 패턴 이상을 벗어나지 못하죠. 그나마 데뷔전을 치르는 스파이더맨이 경쾌하고, 개미처럼 아이언맨의 흉갑 사이로 침투했다가 거인이 되어 위용을 뽐내는 앤트맨의 액션이 쓸만하지만, 앤트맨의 경우 작은 존재가 커지는 체구의 전환이 신기한 것이지, 막상 커지고 나서는 박력이 없습니다. 딱 최홍만의 이리와 꿀밤 저리와 발차기 수준의 액션입니다. 체격 변화의 효과를 논하자면 차라리 <주토피아>에서 소인 취급 받던 주디가 새앙쥐 마을에 들어가서 상대적 거인이 되는 것이 더 극적이고 의미 있습니다. 앤트맨은 커지고 난 이후 최홍만에 불과하지만 주디 홉스는 문자 그대로 걸리버가 되죠. <걸리버 여행기>와 <주토피아>가 주제의식이 맞닿는 작품이라는 점에서 더욱 적절하고요. 그저 무의미한 활극이 아닌 것이죠. 이러한 맥락에서 볼 떄는 <엑스맨 시리즈> 같은 것만 못하다고 생각합니다. 특정한 개인의 능력의 서사적 활용도와 시각적 효과로는 <데이즈 오브 퓨처 패스트>의 '퀵 실버 씬'만 못하고, 능력자와 능력자, 능력과 능력의 상호 작용을 극적으로 보여주는 데에는 동 영화의 핵심 시퀀스가 아닌, 초반 셋팅에 불과한 시퀀스만도 못합니다. 그나마 볼만한 것이 후반부 캡틴과 버키 태그팀 정도입니다만, 그보다는 쥬라기 월드의 렉시와 벨로시랩터의 태그팀이 더 간지나죠. 물론 비교 대상으로 거론한 <분노의 질주 : 더 세븐>이나 <미션 임파서블5>나 <킹스맨>이나 <엑스맨 프리퀄 시리즈> 등등이 영화사에 길이길이 회자될 시대를 초월한 명작이라면야 그러려니 할 수도 있겠습니다만, 전혀 그렇지 않지요. 그저 매 해 매 시즌마다 더러 나오는 흔한 양산품일 뿐입니다. 그러니 그 수준에도 못 미치면 대단하다고 할 수가 없는 것이고요. 실제로 <시빌 워>를 본 이들 중 적잖은 수가 액션 씬이 아니라 크리스 에반스의 근육을 기억하는 것을 보면, <시빌 워>는 액션 영화가 아니라 보디빌딩 영화라고 해야겠죠. 차라리 <윈터 솔져>의 액션이 낫지 않나 싶군요. <윈터 솔져> 역시도 위의 작품들처럼 길이길이 회자될 액션물이야 아니지만, 묘사에 있어 지나침이 없죠. 카 체이스나 대인 액션이나 오버없이 잘 절제되어 있으며 모범적입니다. 전형적인 첩보물 액션을 우수한 기성품답게 보여주지요. * 이런 간지남 윈터 솔져가 <시빌 워>에서는 <황해>의 김구남처럼 처량한 빙구가 되죠... 2. 서사구조야 흔한 무협지지요. 무림맹에서 주인공의 친우를 무림공적으로 간주하고, 주인공은 친우를 보호하기 위해 무림 전체와 등 지고, 그 과정에서 피 맺힌 원한이 꼬리에 꼬리를 물고, 상황을 이용하려는 악역으로 인해 동지들 사이에 새로운 원한이 생기고, 무림맹 개작살 나고....그냥 MCU 딱지 떼고 블라인드 테스트 해보면 킬링 타임용으로 보는 흔해빠진 문피아 장르 소설과 다를 것이 없습니다. 3. 소코비아 협정은 맥거핀입니다. 소코비아 협정의 기능은 딱 두 가지에 국한됩니다. 1) 대립이 본격화되기 전에 히어로들의 진영을 나누어주는 사전 작업 2) 히어로들의 운신의 폭을 제약하여 결국 외통수에 몰릴 수밖에 없게 만드는 파워 리미터. 그리고 이 정도는 5분 안의 분량으로 처리하는 것이 마땅합니다. 뉴스로 보도한다든가, 극단적으로는 내레이션으로 소코비아 협정이 있었다는 것을 제시한 뒤 그에 대해 등장인물들의 대사 몇 개만 덧붙여서 반응과 감상 전달할 수도 있는 것이죠. 여하간 구체적으로 무슨 방법이 되었든 간에 많은 분량을 할애할 필요는 없습니다. 소코비아 협정은 어디까지나 설정일 뿐이지 서사가 아니니까요. 소코비아 협정이 사라진다고 해도 설정 구멍이 생기는 것이지 서사의 진전 자체에는 큰 무리가 없습니다. 따라서 이 영화가 굳이 2시간 27분짜리 영화가 될 필요는 없었다고 생각합니다. 4. 제모라는 캐릭터는 아무래도 납득하기 어렵습니다. 그의 목표는 버키가 하워드 스타크를 죽였다는 것을 폭로함으로써 아이언맨과 캡틴 아메리카를 비롯한 어벤져스 히어로들을 분열시키는 것입니다. 이를 위한 그의 첫 행적은 1991년 12월 16일 작전 보고서(이하 '보고서')를 확보하기 위해서 전 하이드라 요원을 고문하는 것이지요. 이것은 하워드 스타크의 죽음의 전모를 파헤쳐서 토니 스타크에게 폭로하기 위한 것입니다. 그런데 이때, 제모는 버키가 하워드 스타크를 살해한 것을 알고 있었을까요? 1) 알고 있었다면 : 어떤 경로를 통해 알았는지 설명이 필요합니다. 증거라고는 CCTV 영상 밖에 없지 않나 싶은 상황인데 이것은 '보고서'를 보기 전에는 알 수가 없으니까요. 2) 심증은 있으나 확신은 하지 못하고 있던 경우 : 이 역시 어떻게 심증을 얻게 되었는지, 어떤 근거로 버키가 하워드 스타크를 죽였다는 추론을 하게 되었는지 알 도리가 없습니다. 사전에 알고 있었다고 가정할 때와 사실상 똑같은 문제에 직면하죠. 3) 아예 몰랐던 경우 : 그럼 왜 '보고서'를 조사하고 있던 걸까요? 결국 제모는 어떤 식으로든 하워드 스타크를 살해한 것이 버키라는 추측 혹은 확신을 하고 있었다고 봐야할 텐데, 그럼 어떻게 알게 되었는지를 질문하지 않을 수가 없지요. 이후의 행적도 의문스럽기는 매한가지입니다. 캡틴 아메리카와 아이언맨의 분열을 성공시키기 위해 제모가 쓴 책략의 순서를 차례대로 살펴보자면, 먼저 버키로 위장한 채 비엔나 UN 회의에서 테러를 하여 버키에게 누명을 씌워서 그가 체포되도록 유도한 다음, 스스로 정신과 의사로 신분을 위장하여 버키에게 접근하고 세뇌시켜서 1991년 12월 16일 작전 보고서를 손에 넣고, 그렇게 자신의 진짜 계획이 윈터 솔져 5명을 양성하여 지구 정복을 하려는 것인양 가장하고, 더불어 자신이 버키로 위장해서 UN 회의에서 테러를 자행했으며 정신과 의사로도 위장했다는 사실을 아이언맨이 인지하도록 하여 아이언맨 역시 캡틴과 버키에게 동조하게 만들고, 그 결과 캡틴 아메리카와 아이언맨이 연구소로 오도록 유도하여, 그들에게 버키가 하워드 스타크를 살해하는 장면을 보여주는 것입니다. 최대한 간단히 설명하려고 해도 복잡하다는 인상을 피하기 어려울 정도죠. 제모 입장에서는 굳이 이렇게 복잡한 트릭을 쓸 이유가 없다고 생각합니다. 일단 복잡하면 복잡할수록 통제 불가능한 변수가 많아지니 실패할 확률은 올라가니까요. 막말로 공항에서 난전 상황에서 버키가 죽기라도 하면 답이 없어지죠. 즉, 트릭의 단계와 단계 사이에 개연성은 있지만, 필연성은 없습니다. 결정적으로, 하워드 스타크를 살해하는 CCTV 영상만 토니 스타크에게 전송하면 목표 달성 아닌가 싶거든요. 또한 버키의 누명을 벗길 이유도 딱히 없고요. 버키의 누명을 벗기는 것은 토니 스타크도 연구소로 유인하기 위해서인데, 구태여 그럴 것 없이 버키가 누명을 벗지 못하고 모두의 공적이 되어 있는, 개쌍놈이라고 공언되어 있는 상태가 히어로들을 분열시키기에 더 좋죠. 저 경우는 블랙 팬서도 태도 변화 없이 버키를 살해하려 들 테니 버키를 보호하려는 캡틴 아메리카가 수세에 몰릴 수밖에 없고 그만큼 캡틴 아메리카가 죽을 확률도 더 높습니다. 이쪽이 히어로들의 영구적인 분열을 유도하기에는 더 낫지 않나 싶군요. 극단적으로 말하자면, 막말로 공항에서 히어로들이 격투 벌일 때 드론 출격 시켜서 하워드가 살해되는 CCTV 영상만 보여줘도 되는 문제죠. 설마 불세출의 책략가 제모 남작에게 드론 띄울 능력이 없을 리 없고.. 그럼에도 제모가 이렇게 복잡한 트릭을 시연하도록 한 것은, 결국 관객들에게 '서프라이즈!'식 반전을 선사하며 놀라게 만들기 위해서라고 밖에 말할 도리가 없는 듯 합니다. 결론적으로 제모는, '아이언맨과 캡틴 아메리카가 싸우게 만들기 위해서 버키를 아이언맨의 부모의 원수로 설정하자. 그런데 이를 아이언맨이 알아야 싸움이 날 것이 아닌가. 결국은 폭로자가 필요하다. 그런데 초장부터 폭로해버리면 재미가 없잖아. 전혀 그런 기색 없이 서사를 끌고 나가다가 결정적인 순간에 폭로해야 관객들의 충격이 극대화되지. 그럼 히어로들을 후반부까지 자신의 의도대로 끌고 오게 만들 수 있고, 결정적인 지점에서는 하워드 스타크의 죽음의 진실을 폭로하는 인물이 필요하다. 이를 위해서는 해당 인물은 하워드 스타크와 버키와 히어로들 개개인의 행적에 대해서 모든 것을 알고 있고 그들이 어찌 움직일지 정확히 예측하는 먼치킨이 되어야 한다.'라는 의도 하에 만들어진 것이죠. 이렇게 보면 매우 편의주의적인 셈이고요. 5. 그 외...하워드 스타크가 혈청 운반책인 것은 직관적으로 납득하기 어렵습니다. 전세계 최고 거부이자 공룡기업 CEO가 저런 것을 직접 운반하다니....빌 게이츠가 엑스박스 신상품 운반하다가 경쟁사 직원에게 강탈당했다고 하면 해외 토픽으로 대대적으로 보도될 텐데요. 부하 직원이 없던 걸까요. 그럼 하다못해 FedEx라도 쓰시지... <캐스트 어웨이>의 척 놀랜드(톰 행크스 분)가 보면 울겠네요. 영화 보면 직업정신 투철하던데. 그리고 "우리 아빠 방패야."라든가, 팔콘과 버키가 캡틴이 키스하는 거 보고 얼레리 꼴레리하는 것은 유치하죠. 시트콤 클리셰 수준... 캡틴이 마지막에 편지로 아이언맨에게 일장 연설하는 것도 낯 간지럽다 싶고요. 6. 사실 저는 이 영화를 개봉 2일차에 봤습니다. 그리고 고작 2주만에 그때의 열기가 완전히 사라졌음을 느낍니다. 이미 좌석 점유율이 7%로 떨어졌고, 사실 연휴 직전에도 15%까지 떨어졌었죠. 이것은 비슷한 시기에 개봉했던 에이지 오브 울트론보다도 낮은 수치입니다. 이것이 이 영화에 대한 사람들의 체감을 말해주지 않나 싶군요. 즉, 워낙 전국적/세계적으로 홍보된 영화이니 연휴 때 데이트나 가족 나들이 거리로 선택된 정도고, 그런 엔터테이닝이나 레저 용도와는 무관하게 영화 자체에 매혹된 관객들을 등에 업고 뒷심을 발휘할 저력은 없는 영화라는 것이죠. 이렇게 열기가 잦아들고 거리감을 가진 채 영화를 볼 수 있게 되었을 때 리뷰를 하는 것이 오히려 적절하다는 생각이 드네요. ★★ 2/5 전작인 윈터 솔져가 더 낫다고 밖에는... 지난 5월 4일, 제가 패널로 참여하는 팟캐스트 영화계에서 리뷰한 바 있습니다. 홍차넷 회원인 리니시아와 이명주 군이 함께 참여했습니다. 1부 : http://www.podbbang.com/ch/8720?e=21962410 2부 : http://www.podbbang.com/ch/8720?e=21963232 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 133 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 146 Warning: Use of undefined constant vote - assumed 'vote' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 161 1 이 게시판에 등록된 구밀복검님의 최근 게시물
