 2016년. 전에 없던 새로운 느낌의 코미디 영화가 나타났습니다. 바로 전주 국제영화제에서 대상을 받은 <델타 보이즈>라는 작품입니다. 제작비 250만 원, 제작기간 15일 만에 만든 이 영화는 고봉수 감독과 배우분들이 마지막으로 이 영화를 찍고 영화판을 떠나려고 했던 영화이기도 합니다. 영화 생활의 종지부를 찍으려던 작품이었는데 오히려 전주 국제영화제 대상을 비롯, 인디포럼, 인천 독립영화제 등등 독립영화제에서 두각을 드러내며 오히려 영화판의 길을 열어준 작품이기도 합니다. 이 작품을 두고 양익준 감독은 이런 이야기를 했습니다. 연기지망생이라면 꼭 봐야 한다고. 안 보면 X신이라고. https://www.instagram.com/p/BVIF24yl3E2/?taken-by=chie4c (출처 - 배우 윤지혜 님 인스타) 밑바닥 인생의 꿈을 그리는 이야기는 크게 새로울 게 없지만, 이 영화에서 보여주는 특유의 롱테이크와 배우들의 연기는 이전에 없던 한국영화의 코미디 스타일을 보여주게 됩니다. 덕분에 대표작 하나 없던 고봉수 감독과 배우들은 <고봉수 사단>이라는 이름으로 불리게 되며 작게나마 한국 영화판에 이름을 알립니다. - 고봉수 감독 B급 영화를 좋아했던 고봉수 감독은 습작을 200여 편 가량 만들었습니다. 미국 애틀랜타에서 라디오 DJ 생활도 하였는데, 이 시기 단편 ‘컵 오브 커피’가 시카고 노스웨스턴 영화제에서 수상을 했고, 또한 같은 해에 ‘밀리언 달러 베이비’의 패러디인 ‘쓰리 달러 베이비’도 나왔는데, 이 영화가 시카고 코미디 페스티벌에서 상영된 적이 있었습니다. 영화 비전공자이며, 20대에는 공사장과 세탁소를 전전했고, 14년 차 독립영화감독 생활을 하고 40대가 되어서 제대로 된 장편 영화를 내놓은 감독이기도 합니다. 고봉수 감독의 연출 스타일은 매우 독특합니다. 각본에 디테일한 대사를 정해두지 않고, 배우들에게 상황만 던져줍니다. 그리고 배우들 스스로 그 상황에서 어떤 이야기를 할 건지 정하고 리허설을 거쳐서 연기를 합니다. 덕분에 배우들은 자신에게 어울리는 모습으로 연기를 하게 되고 많은 사람들이 고봉수 사단만의 연기 스타일을 칭찬하기도 합니다. 그래서 그런지 히치콕 같이 A~Z 까지 완벽하게 설계하는 감독들이 부럽다고 고봉수 감독이 이야기하기도 했었습니다. - 고봉수 사단 백승환, 신민재, 김충길 배우는 같은 연기학원을 다니며 나이는 다르지만 친구처럼 지내던 사이였습니다. 아르바이트를 하거나 일을 하며 단역배우 생활을 하였고, 배우로서의 꿈을 놓지 않았습니다. <홀리 테러>라는 단편을 통해 백승환 배우가 고봉수 감독과 처음 만나게 되었고, 그 이후 라는 작품을 통해 고봉수 사단이라고 불리는 멤버가 갖춰지게 되었습니다. 고봉수 감독이 영화를 최단시간, 저예산으로 찍는 노하우(?) 가 있어서 많은 단편들을 만들어 내었습니다. 그중 <사면 조가>라는 작품은 단돈 3만 원이라는 예산으로 찍기도 하였습니다. 고봉수 사단의 주인공은 돌아가며 순서대로(...) 합니다. <델타 보이즈>의 주인공이 백승환 배우였고, <튼튼이의 모험> 주인공이 김충길 배우였으니, 다음 작품 <다영 씨> 같은 경우는 신민재 배우가 주인공이 되는 식입니다. 고봉수 감독 연출의 특성상 배우들은 각본과 내용에 대해 자유롭게 이야기를 하는 편이고, 때로는 정해놓은 각본과 다른 방향으로 내용을 전개해도 결과물이 좋으면 OK 할 정도로 두터운 신뢰와 자유도를 갖고 있다고 합니다.  - 촬영 과정 <델타 보이즈>로 이름을 알린 후 차기작을 위한 나름의 계획이 있었습니다. 바로 투자를 받기 위한 각본을 따로 만들어 예산을 확보하고 했었습니다. 배우들과 감독님은 너무 재미있는 각본이고 분명히 투자를 받게 되리라 생각했지만 그러지 못했죠(....) 그래서 배우분들과 감독님이 돈을 모아 영화의 제작비를 충당했습니다. <튼튼이의 모험>은 전라남도 함평에 있는 중학교의 레슬링부를 모티브로 삼았고, 실제로 촬영도 그 지역에서 진행되었습니다. 배우들의 나이가 다 서른이 넘는지라 중학교가 아닌 고등학교가 되었고, 다문화 가정, 이혼 가정, 대학 진학이라는 소재들은 모두 실제 학생들에게서 모티브를 영화에 가져온 요소라고 합니다. - 비전문 배우들 이 영화에는 총 세 명의 비전문 배우들이 나옵니다. 코치 역할을 맡으신 고성완 배우는 고봉수 감독님의 삼촌입니다. 본업은 버스기사인데, 감독의 단편에 출연한 경력이 있었고 워낙 끼가 넘치고 재미있으신 분이라 영화에 캐스팅하셨다고 합니다. 삼촌인 고봉수 감독 입장에선 조카가 감독이기에 이런저런 연출에 대해 훈수를 놓기도 하고, 배우들에게 연기 방향을 지시하기도 하며(...) 여러 가지 재미있는 에피소드를 만드셨습니다. 비전문 배우임에도 연기력이 출중하여 많은 관객분들이 연극판에서 오랫동안 연기생활을 하신 배우라고 생각을 했습니다. 백승환 배우가 연기한 진권 역의 어머니인 필리핀 출신 어머니도 비전문 배우입니다. 실제 중학교 레슬링부의 학생의 어머니이십니다. 감독님께서 출연 제의를 하셨고, 아들에 관한 이야기를 만드는 것에 긍정적으로 생각하여 출연하였다고 합니다. 극 중 필리핀 출신 어머니와, 코치님 두 비전문 배우가 실제 배우인 아들 진권을 걱정하는 씬이 있는데, 비전문 배우가 배우를 걱정하는 모습을 연기하는 게 뭔가 묘한 재미를 보여줍니다. 고물상 아저씨도 비전문 배우입니다. 이분은 감독이 매우 우연하게 만났고, 나름의 인생철학을 말씀해 주시는데 너무 뼈 있는 말들이 많아 출연 제의를 하셨답니다. 그러자 아저씨가 '금방 찍어줄 테니까 카메라 가져오라'라고 호언장담하셨고, 30분 만에 촬영을 끝내고 할 일을 하러 가셨답니다.. 영화에는 총 두 씬이 나오는데 베트남 출신 어머니와 연기를 하는 장면입니다. 감독님은 '이 여성분을 사랑하는 사람이라 생각하고 연기해주세요'라고 한마디 했을 뿐인데, 상황 설정을 스스로 하시고 놀라운 연기를 보여주셔서 카메라 두에서 감탄했다는 이야기를 하셨습니다. - 롱테이크 <델타 보이즈>와 <튼튼이의 모험> 에는 두 가지 연출적인 공통점이 있습니다. 고정된 카메라 앞에서 롱테이크로 가져가는 연기. 그리고 음악이 없습니다. 이런 연출적인 특징은 홍상수 영화에서도 사용되는 기법이기도 합니다. 하지만 공통된 연출적 특징에도 불구하고 극명하게 다른 점이 있습니다. 홍상수의 영화는 문어체 느낌의 특유의 말투로 대사를 주고받으며 롱테이크를 이끌고 갑니다. 이런 말투 때문에 몇몇 사람들은 너무 부자연스럽다는 평을 하기도 합니다. 하지만 이 부자연스러움은 의도된 것입니다. 홍상수의 영화는 홍상수 자신의 세계를 파편처럼 흩트려 놓은 이미지들을 영화에서 부분적으로 비춰주는 영화라고 생각합니다. 자신의 세계에서 파생된 것들을 보여주기에 그의 영화에서 배우는 배우 스스로 독립될 있는 존재가 아닌 홍상수의 한 부분으로 역할을 할 뿐입니다. 그래서 새로운 배우들이 홍상수의 영화에 출연해도 홍상수의 모습이 진하게 녹아날 수밖에 없습니다. 하지만 고봉수 감독의 영화는 다릅니다. 카메라가 고정되어 있고 배우들을 보여주지만 그들이 보여주는 연기는 매우 사실적입니다. 심하게 보면 친구들과 역할 놀이를 하는 모습을 가만히 찍고 있는 듯한 모습으로 보입니다. 그 정도로 전문 배우들과 비전문 배우들은 카메라가 있다는 것을 의식하지 않는 듯한 연기를 보여줍니다. 배우들끼리 대화를 나누다가 오디오가 겹치면 촬영 사고일 텐데 이 영화는 오디오가 겹치고, 같은 말을 반복하고, 실제 이야기하는 듯한 군말이 계속해서 붙는 연기를 보여줍니다. 어찌 보면 배우가 아니라 실제 생활에서 말하는 듯한 모습인 것 같습니다. 이런 식으로 카메라는 배우들을 관찰하기만 합니다. 카메라를 움직이지 않으면서 이 모든 것들을 관찰할 뿐입니다. 마치 실제 연출도 배우들에게 어떠한 연기를 강요하는 것이 아니라, 그들 스스로 가장 잘 하는 것을 믿고 맡긴다는 듯한 움직임이 카메라에도 녹아나 있는 모습입니다. 고봉수 감독과 배우들의 유대감이나 신뢰를 고스란히 느낄 수 있는 부분입니다. 한쪽은 카메라를 고정시키고, 감독이 구축한 이미지를 깊게 들여다보게 하고 들춰내 줍니다. 그 이미지들의 파편들을 보여주고 관객들에게 영화의 해석이나 감상을 맡겨버립니다. 하지만 한쪽은 그들 모습 최선의 모습 그대로를 관찰하게 합니다. 배우들은 마지막 연기라 생각하고 최선을 다해 그 상황을 연기합니다. 카메라는 그 연기에 개입하지 않고, 그냥 관찰할 뿐입니다. 이런 카메라의 움직임은 <튼튼이의 모험>에서 보여주는 주제의식과도 맞닿아 있습니다. 레슬링을 사랑하는 '충길' 이가 레슬링을 통해 성공하던 실패하던, 그러한 꿈을 묵묵히 관찰하고 응원하겠다는 관찰자의 모습으로 카메라가 자신의 존재감을 드러내는 것이겠죠. - Loser’s Adventure "돈 안 되는 일 하지 말고, 돈 되는 일 해라" 델타 보이즈와, 튼튼이의 모험에 계속해서 반복되는 대사입니다. 인터뷰를 진행하는 에도 실제로 많이 들었다는 이야기라고 하시더군요. 공장에서 매형 일을 돕는 주제에 노래하겠다고 일을 때려치우는 무모함을 보이던 델타 보이즈의 강일록. 레슬리에 재능도 없으면서 코치에게 매달리고, 아버지를 설득하고, 친구들에게 레슬링을 권유하는 충길. 이 영화가 코미디를 표방하면서도 마냥 조소하며 웃을 수 없는 이유는 실제 배우들의 모습이 영화 속에 투영되기도 하지만, 관람자라면 누구나 공감될 수 있는 부분들이 담겨있기 때문입니다. 그리고 그들의 고군분투하는 모습, 실패하는 모습을 통해 느껴지는 감정을 감정에게 강요하지 않고 가만히 놔두고 관찰하는 카메라와 아무런 소리도 내지 않는 음악이 이들의 모습을 가볍게 느껴지지 않게 해 줍니다. 실패는 하겠지만, 튼튼해질 겁니다.  - 뒷이야기 <튼튼이의 모험>의 주인공인 김충길 배우가 GV시간에 이렇게 이야기한 적이 있습니다. "사람이 기대가 크면 실망도 크기 때문에 기대를 낮추려고 노력한다. 하지만 저는 이 영화에 거는 기대가 굉장히 크고 실패하면 크게 절망한 뒤 다시 도전할 겁니다" 참 튼튼이스러운 김충길 배우의 말이 와 닿더군요. 고봉수 감독님은 영화가 흥행하지 못하더라도 많은 분들이 이 영화를 봐주셨으면 하는 바람이 있습니다. VOD가 풀렸기 때문에 얼마든지 다운로드하여서 보셨으면 좋겠다고 하십니다. 심지어 어둠의 경로를 통해서라도 이 영화를 보고 배우들의 연기를 많이 봐준다면 그것도 감사하다고 하십니다.
