본문은 링크#1의 티타임글에 대한 반응 + 최근 (미국기준) 넷플릭스에 올라온 Hannah Gadsby의 코메디 스폐셜 Nanette의 내용 + 그리고 제가 지난 몇년간 코메디에 대해 생각해온 생각들을 간추린 내용입니다 [본문에는 Nanette와 Tig Notaro의 Live에 대한 스포일러가 존재합니다] *특정 부분에서 욕설을 검열하지 않고 사용하였습니다 코메디는 크게 두부분으로 구성된다고 볼수있습니다 1. 텐션형성 2. (예측을 벗어나는) 펀치라인 특정 농담의 성공여부는 얼마나 큰 텐션을 형성시키고 이 텐션을 상대방이 얼마나 예상치 못했지만, 듣는 순간 공감하는 방법으로 해소시키느냐의 문제입니다 농담이 안먹히는 대표적인 케이스 두가지를 생각해보면 알수있습니다: a. 상대방이 내 펀치라인을 이미 알고있거나 완벽하게 예상했을 경우 b. 상대방이 내 펀치라인을 듣고도 전혀 공감을 못해서 설명해줘야하는 경우 코메디의 구조를 이렇게 생각해보았을때 폭력은 펀치라인으로서 효과적일수있습니다. 하지만 폭력이 펀치라인으로서 효과적일수있는 이유는 텐션이 조정된 상황에 대한 해답으로 폭력은 상상하기힘든 반응이라는 전제조건이 선행되기 때문이라고 유추해볼수있습니다. 친한친구이나 가족들 사이에서 상대적으로 폭력적인 언사와 행동이 용납되는 이유는 말그대로 친하기 때문입니다. 표면적으로 보았을때 폭력적으로 보이나, 우리사이에는 이런 표면의 공격성에는 나를 해하고자하는 진심과 현실에서의 폭력이 담겨져있지 않다는 믿음이있기에 웃긴거죠. 이 전제조건이 깨지는 순간 폭력적인 펀치라인은 웃기지 않습니다 그리고 우리주위에는 상대방의 표면적 폭력성이 실체화 될수있다는 두려움을 안고 살아야하는 사람들이 분명히있습니다. 가족, 연인, 친구, 생판 모르는 남들에게 신체적, 성적, 언어적, 정서적 폭력을 당한분들이 굉장히 많습니다. 특히나 전통적으로 사회정치적 권력이 적은 집단에 소속해있을수록 이러할 가능성이 높죠. 폭력성을 내포하고있는 펀치라인이 위험한 이유는 여기서부터 시작합니다 일주일전, 6월 28일 미국 애나폴리스 지역신문인 캐피탈 가제트에 괴한이 들어서서 총기를 난사하여 5명을 사살한 끔찍한 사건이있었습니다. 문제는 바로 이틀전, 유명 극우유명인사인 마일로 이아노풀로스가 인스타그램에 "아 누가 이 기자들 좀 쏴버렸으면 좋겠어/can’t wait for the vigilante squads to start gunning journalists"와 같은 내용의 이야기를 포스트했다는 사실입니다. 당연히 마일로의 언행이 캐피탈 가제트 총격사건의 직접적인 원인이라고 인관관계를 형성할수는 없습니다. 하지만 "(기자들이 자기를 괴롭혀서) 그냥 트롤링하면서 던진 농담이였다"라는 마일로의 해명을 "아 그래 농담이였구나"라며 미소와 함께 그냥 넘기는건 훨씬 힘듭니다. 코메디와 농담은 아주 강력하지만, 동시에 한계 또한 분명히 존재하는 소통법입니다. 사람들의 소통수단 중 코메디만큼 짧은 시간안에 최소한의 리스크를 지면서 "내편과 네편"을 구분하기 좋은 방법은 흔치않습니다. 내가 생성한 텐션과 펀치라인에 동조하는 정도가, 내 삶의 경험과 그로 인한 가치관과의 동조정도의 아주 훌륭한 척도거든요. 그리고 농담이 어긋난다해도 "아 농담이였어요, 미안해요 ㅎㅎ" 또는 "에이 코메디를 다큐로 받아치면 어떡해 ㅎㅎ"로 빠져나가기도 쉬운편이니까요. 이렇듯 농담은 아주 효율적인 소통법이지만, 구조적 특성상 아주 명확한 약점 또한 존재합니다. 2파트인 코메디와 달리 기본적으로 사람들과의 대화의 서사는 (좀 낡은 서구적 사고방식이긴 하지만) 3파트로 구성됩니다: 1. 인트로 - 사건/텐션형성 2. 클라이막스 - 사건/텐션해소 3. 컨클루션 - 이후 상황 정리 컨클루션, 즉 결론은 당연히 굉장히 중요합니다. 어떤 사건이있었고, 그 사건을 해결해낸 이후, "so what?"/"그래서 어쨌는데?"에 대한 이야기가 이루어지는 부분입니다. 일련의 사건들이 관련된 캐릭터들에게 어떠한 영향을 끼쳤고 그로 인해 그 캐릭터들과 그들이 살고있는 그 세상이 어떻게 바뀌는지, 이에 대한 설명이 없으면 한걸음 떨어져서 보았을때 일련의 사건들은 아무런 의미를 띄지 않는다는 결론에 도착하기 쉽습니다. 그래도 의미를 찾고 싶다면 보통 가장 자극적이였던 클라이막스의 내용에 대해 집중하게 되겠죠. 코메디는 구조적으로 이러한 3파트 서사를 통한 결론을 논의하기에 적합한 구조가 아닙니다. 위대한 스탠드업 코미디언들은 이 구조적 한계를 넘어서기 위해 다양한 방법을 사용합니다. 요즘 흔한 방법중 하나는 오히려 서사의 무존재를 직접 인정하면서 그걸 오히려 펀치라인으로 사용하는거죠. 전혀 연관성이 없는 두 농담 사이에 말도 안되는 연결성을 짚어내면서 "여러분 이게 바로 세그웨이/트랜지션입니다 훗." 이런식으로요. 스탠드업 코메디에 3파트 서사가 아예 불가능한것은 아닙니다. Tig Notaro의 Live는 (당시) 본인이 암투병환자라는 사실로 인해 자연스럽게 형성되는 텐션과, 미래를 내다볼수 없다는 본인의 불투명한 결론을 코메디의 특성과 결합시킨 위대한 세트입니다. Mike Birbiglia는 한시간짜리 세트에서 본인의 인생사를 틀로두고 농담과 농담을 연결하여 끝에 결론을 도출해내는 코메디를 고수하죠. 그렇지만 이들이 예외적인거지, 당연한건 아닙니다. Tig만해도 Live 이외의 스폐셜들을 보면 서사적 구조가 약하거든요. 오히려 열심히 그 구조를 아예 무시하고 무너뜨리려는 스타일에 더 가깝다고 볼수있을것 같습니다. Hannh Gadsby는 Nanette에서 이러한 코메디의 특성을 지적하며 자신이 코메디 은퇴를 고려하고있다고 이야기합니다. Hannah는 호주의 극보수지역인 태즈매니아 출신의 레즈비언 코믹입니다. 그리고 자연스럽게 그의 커리어에서 레즈비언/동성애에 관한 농담은 큰 부분을 차지했습니다. 하지만 20여년 코미디언 경력의 지점에 서있는 Hannah는 이제 자신의 삶을 이용한 코메디를 그만둘까하는 고민에 빠져있다고 고백합니다. 본인이 레즈비언이여서 처한 예상치 못한 상황을 펀치라인으로 사용한 그 농담들은 레즈비언들에 대해 농담을 듣는 청자는 물론, 농담을 반복적으로 사용하는 본인의 서사 또한 펀치라인에 머물게 밖에 못한다고 생각하기 때문입니다. 예를 들어 이러한 농담입니다: Hannah가 예전에 영화를 보러 간적있다고합니다. 영화를 보고 나오는데, 아주 매력적인 여성 한분이 걸어 나오고있었다고 하더라구요. Hannah는 그 여성분에게 접근을하여 말을 걸려고했습니다. 그러자 어떤 남성이 바로 "이 Faggot 새끼야 내 여자친구한테 찝쩍대지 말고 꺼져"라고 선언합니다, 하지만 곧 Hannah가 여성임을 눈치채고 "아 ㅅㅂ 미안, 난 너가 faggot인줄 알았어, 아 ㅈㄹ 미안해, faggot이면 조졌을텐데"라고 사과했다고합니다. 이 농담에서의 텐션은 Hannah에게 굉장히 공격적으로 다가서고있는 남성과의 대립관계에서 옵니다 그리고 해소는, 저 남성이 동성애자 비하단어인 faggot을 Hannah에게 지속적으로 사용하면서 사과한다는 사실이죠. 레즈비언인 Hannah 또한 faggot에 포함될수있는 사람이니까요. 여러모로 우스꽝스러운 상황이죠. Nanette 초반에 이 농담을 던진 Hannah는 중반부에서 본인이 위와 같은 이유로 코메디 은퇴를 생각하고있다 선언한후, 후반부에 다음과 같은 이야기를합니다. 아까 그 영화관 조크, 결말이 뭔지 말 안해줬지? 사과하고 떠나갔던 남자가 좀 있다 날 다시 찾아왔어: "씨발 이제야 이해했어, 너 씨발 여자 faggot인거자나, 좃같은 faggot 새끼" 그리고서는 나를 팼어. 진짜 개패듯이 팼다고. 그리고 주위 사람들은 이 모든 과정중에 그냥 지켜보기만했어. 그런데 나, 그 일 경찰에 신고도 안했어, 아니 못했어, 주위 사람들에게 이야기도 못했고. Hannah는 스스로 본인이 그만한 가치와 존재감이있는 사람이란걸 인정하지 못했다고합니다. 머리로는 충분히 이해를해도, 그런일을 당했을때, 존재를 사회가 인정하지 않고 지워버렸을때, 본인의 삶은 거기에 저항할 가치가 있다고 스스로 느끼지 못했다는거죠. 본인의 서사를 이야기를 자조적이고 우스꽝스러운 코메디로만 소화하고있던 Hannah는 본인 스스로 삶에 대한 의미와 결론을 체화시키기 못했던겁니다. 그저 우스꽝스러운, 예상치 못한 상황의 연속일뿐이였던거지, 그게 자신의 삶과 세상을 어떻게 변화시켰는지는 그 삶을 살아온 본인 또한 인정하고있지 못했던거죠. Hannah는 본인이 이 이야기를 나눔으로서 victimhood, 피해의식의 서사로 이야기하는 것을 원하는게 아니라고 밝힙니다. 본인 스스로 자신은 피해자가 아니라고 선언합니다. 자신은 이러한 경험들을 딛고 일어서 삶은 재건축한 강인한 사람이라고요. 하지만 이성애자들, 특히 이성애자 남성, 특특히 백인 이성애자 남성이라는 권력집단에 속한 자들은 본인들이 경험하는 특권의 세상외에 훨씬 더 다양한 삶이 무수히 많이 존재한다는 사실을 명확히 전달해야할 책임감을 느낀다고 선언합니다. 그것을 위해서 코메디를 그만둬야 한다면 기꺼이 그만두겠다고요. 왜 농담을 그냥 농담으로 못받는 사람들이 있을까요. 농담이 농담으로서 작용하기 위해서는 여러가지 조건들이 맞아야합니다. 앞서 언급했듯이 효과적인 펀치라인은 논리성과 예외성이라는 두가지 조건을 동시에 성립해야하니까요. 그리고 권력집단에 속해있을수록 이 조건을 충족시키는데 신경을 덜 써도 됩니다. 조건이 성립되든 안되든, 상대방에게 표면적 동의를 강요할수있는 특권이있으니까요. 상사나 선배의 농담에 어쩔수 없이 웃어본 경험이 없는 분 계신가요? 그리고 농담은 효율적인만큼 가볍고 짧은 소통법입니다. 결론이 중요하지 않거든요. 오히려 결론을 적극적으로 피하기에 더 웃긴것도있죠. 삶과 세상이 너무 복잡하고 머리아프고 힘들때, 이런식으로 짧게 복잡한것 다 잊고 도피하기 위한 방법으로 코메디는 매우 훌륭합니다. 하지만 코메디로서만 소비, 설명되는 삶에 대해서는 한번더 생각해봐야한다고 믿습니다. 권력집단에서 멀어질수록 전통적인 서사를 이용한 소통의 기회가 현격히 줄어듭니다. 윗분들이, 대중이, 그런 영화 보는거, 책 읽는거, 이야기 듣는거 별로 안좋아하자나요. 이런 상황에서 그나마 가장 먼저 소리를 낼수있는 통로가 코메디인 경우가 많습니다 (물론 코메디도 그 내부에 억압적인 권력체계가 존재합니다). 듣기 싫은 소리라해도, 웃기기라도하면 그래도 어떻게 한마디 정도는 끼워 넣을수있자나요? 하지만 그들의 이야기는 펀치라인에서 끝나지 않습니다. 상대적 권력을 지닌자들이 풍자에 한바탕 웃고 티비를 끄고 본인들의 삶으로 나설때, 약자들은 액트3: 삶의 결론을 마주쳐야합니다. 하지만 다른 사람들이 결론에 대해 들을때는 이미 너무 늦은 이후인 경우가 많죠. 그렇기에 폭력성을 펀치라인으로 사용하는 농담을 언제나 마냥 웃으며 받아 넘길수 없는겁니다. 폭력성이 펀치라인으로서 절대 사용되서는 안된다는 이야기가 아닙니다. 하지만 폭력성이 펀치라인으로서 사용될때 그 농담이 함구하는 의미가 무엇인가에 대해서는 더 신중하게 생각해볼 필요는 있는것이지요. 펀치라인이 사용된 농담자체가 화자와 대상을 고려해보았을때 폭력성을 내포한 펀치라인이 효과적인가, 유의미한가도 생각해볼수있고 소통방법 중 하나로서 코메디가 지니고있는 한계에 비추어보았을때, 폭력성을 펀치라인으로 지속적으로 사용한다는것의 의미 또한 생각해볼수있는거죠. 농담은 분명히 가볍습니다. 일부러 가볍게 설계된 소통법이니까요. 하지만 쌓이고 쌓인 농담의 결론과 여파는 분명히 농담무게들의 총합보다 훨씬 무거울수있다는 것을 잊지 않으면 좋겠습니다. * 수박이님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2018-07-16 08:11) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
