https://youtu.be/sSLReMRewRY 영상에서 교수님은 청소년기의 게임 과몰입에 대한 추적관찰 결과를 통해 이야기를 전개합니다. 연구방법론에 대한 구체적인 설명은 없지만, 결과만 정리하자면 게임 과몰입 청소년의 60%가 보통 1년 뒤 과몰입 상태에서 벗어나며 또 그 나머지 숫자의 약 60%가 벗어난다. 5년내내 과몰입을 유지하는 비율은 약 1~1.5% 정신의학계에서는 이걸 병으로 정하고 연구를 진행하고자 하는 의도가 있다. 그러나 사회과학계의 견해나 산업종사자의 견해, 당사자의 견해들은 의도적으로 필터링된다. 게임과몰입 현상은 같은 환경(높은 온라인게임 보급률등)이라고 볼만한 사회집단에서도 한/중 에서 특히 높게 나타나는데, 이러한 사회간의 특징적인 원인 중 하나는 강력한 시험제도, 높은 학업스트레스, 부모의 높은 간섭이다. 만약 정신의학계의 주장대로 이것이 중독이고 질병이라면(몇 가지 기준에 대한 예시를 들어줍니다) 이것은 그 자체로 (환원적)근거로서 작동한다. 한/중의 게임 과몰입 해소 캠프를 봐라! 치료를 봐라! 이런식으로도 대중논리가 작동하기 쉬워진다는 것. 무엇인가를 질병으로 둘 때는 의학적 관점 뿐만 아니라 다양한 요소들을 고려할 필요가 있다. 특히 정신적인 측면이라면 더욱. 과몰입에 빠지는 계층은 높은 스트레스와 낮은 자기통제력을 지니는데, 낮은 자기통제력은 높은 스트레스에 의한 작용으로도 보인다. 따라서 사회와 가정이 청소년에게 미치는 스트레스가 다른 사회에 비해 월등히 높은게 문제일수도 있다는 것. 과몰입에서 빠져나오는데에는 여러 영향원인이 있는데 긍정적이고 핵심적인 요인은 가정의 적절한 감독과 커뮤니케이션, 교사의 믿음과 기대, 의지할 수 있는 친구와 같은 사회적 상호작용상태로 나타났다. 청소년기는 정신/신체적으로 빠르게 변화하고 민감하게 반응하는 시기로, 게임 과몰입이라는 현상은 게임이 유해할 수도 있지만, 동시에 그 나이대의 청소년 자체를 장기적으로 바라볼 필요가 있다. 변화의 과정속에서 게임이 아닌 그 어떤 무언가에도 과몰입하는 시기가 있을 수 있고, 그것이 현실의 스트레스나 관계망과 무관하지 않다는 것. 따라서 이걸 중독이라는 질병으로 이름 붙이는 것에는 부정적인 입장이다. 특히 부모의 '과잉간섭, 과잉감독'은 독이지만 '방치'역시 독이기 때문에, 적절한 수준의 커뮤니케이션과 유대감, 동시에 감독이 존재해야한다. 뭐 이정도로 정리할 수 있겠습니다. 저도 게임을 꾸준히 했던 청소년인데, 과몰입이라고 부를만한 시기가 1년정도 있었던걸로 기억합니다. 고1에서 고 2올라갈때.. 친했던 애들은 반에 아무도 없고 어쩌다 보니 반에서 마음 붙일 친구도 마땅치 않았고 학교폭력의 피해자이기도 했던 시기였는데, 그 때 학원이나 학교, 친구보다 게임이 주는 안정감이나 재미, 그 안의 사회적 관계망이 중요할 때가 있었습니다. 이를테면 도피처이자 대안사회였던거죠. 디아블로2나 스타크래프트나 워크래프트, 라그나로크, 아스가르드, 뭐 여러가지 게임이 있었습니다만 고2때 했던 마비노기만큼 미친듯이 했던 게임은 없었습니다. 근데 자연스레 멀어지게 되더라고요. 일정 시간 지나면 결국 현실의 요소들이 완화가 되고, 적응이 되고.. 오히려 고3생활때는 게임은 그렇게 큰 취미가 없었습니다. 아니 그 이후로도 큰 취미였던적이 별로 없어요. 게임기에 대한 욕심만 많았지 막상 사서 깬 게임은 거의 없었고.. 롤이 한창 재밌었을때도 보면 공익시절이었거든요. 결국 제가 게임에 가장 강하게 몰입하고 일상을 해칠만한 시기였을때는, 외부의 스트레스와 낮은 희망이 겹쳐있던 시기였습니다. 이건 제 개인에 대한 판단이니까 일반화될수는 없겠지만, 게임에 과몰입 하기 위해서는 사실 게임 자체만큼이나 주변의 요소가 큰 것 같습니다. 불확실하고 높은 장벽의 미래, 외부로부터의 강한 스트레스, 스스로에 대한 회의감, 그 와중에 무언가를 잊거나 피하고 자기존중감을 찾을만한 곳을 찾는거죠. 기술적으로 게임이라는 세계가 그런면에서 무척 접근성이 높고요. 물론 게임 반대론자들의 심리도 일견 이해가 갑니다. 게임이 없다면, 그런 낭떠러지의 상황에서 방황을 덜 하고 제 자리로 빨리 돌아올 수도 있겠죠. 저는 개인적으로 그러려면 다른 수고가 많이 필요하다고 생각하는데... 그런 것 없이 빨리 이겨내! 하면 타고난 그 사람의 힘에 따라서 결과가 갈릴 것 같아요. 회복탄력성이 좋은 사람은 좀 더 빨리 벗어날테고, 그런게 없으면 더 나락으로 떨어질수도 있겠지요. 요새는 주에 다 합쳐도 4~5시간정도 게임하는거 같아요. 그보다 적을수도 있고. 재미가 없는건 아니지만 게임에 대한 자기통제력이 당연하게 발휘되고 있죠. 나이를 먹은 탓도 있겠지만 분명한건 자기가 해야할 일이 명확하고 게임보다 더 나은 현실요소들을 찾아나갈때 게임은 그렇게 과몰입할만큼 매력적인 요소가 아닐수도 있다는거에요. 이 교수님이 적절한 연구를 했는지는 잘 모르겠지만, 제 기억을 돌아봤을때는 잘 맞아 떨어지는 것 같아 올려봅니다. 게임 중독 토론 관련해서 제일 큰 동의를 하게되는 내용이었어요.
