이 세상은 각기 다른 성격과 행동양식을 지닌 사람들이 살아갑니다. 그럼에도 우리는 서로 간의 충돌을 줄이고 공감대를 형성하는 방향으로 상호작용할 수 있죠. 우리가 '상식'이라는 것을 갖추고 있기에 가능한 일이라고 생각합니다. 혹시 만원 버스나 지하철에서 서계시다가 실수로 옆 사람의 발을 밟은 적이 있으신가요? 아니면 반대로 발을 밟혀본 경험은요? 그런 경험을 해보지 않았다고 하더라도, 우리는 발을 밟은 사람이 할 일을 알고 있습니다. 타인에게 피해를 입혔다면 일단 사과를 하고 상대가 괜찮은지 확인하는 것이 마땅하죠. 그것이 상식이고, 상식인이라면 그렇게 행동할 것입니다. 이런 일상 속 행동에 필요한 상식은 대개 시대나 장소가 달라져도 변하지 않는 경우가 많은 것 같습니다. 하지만 좀 더 지식적 측면 상식은 어떨까요? 상식 퀴즈에 나올 법한 그런 상식이요. 저는 그런 지식적 측면의 상식 또한 공유되는 부분이 많을 것이라 생각했습니다. 속해있는 문화권과 세대가 유사한 사람들 사이에서는 더욱 그럴 것이구요. 하지만 많은 사람들을 만나 이야기를 하다 보니, 어쩌면 그 생각이 틀린 것이지도 모르겠다는 생각이 들기 시작했습니다. 대학교에 입학한 뒤, 같은 과에 속한 비슷한 나이의 동기들과 이야기를 하던 도중에도 각자가 가진 상식의 범위에 큰 차이가 있다는 것을 여러 차례 경험하고 난 지금은, 이젠 이런 생각까지 듭니다. 제 사견으로는 백 명의 사람들에게 물어보았을 때 95명 정도가 안다고 대답할 수 있을 것으로 기대되는 것을 상식이라 정의할 수 있겠네요.
제가 한동안 정보 전달 글을 많이 썼는데 제가 글을 쓸 때 결정하는 배경지식의 범위는 간단합니다. 딱 봐서 설명이 필요해 보이면 한다. 일종의 직관 같은 건데 뭔가 내가 봐도 모르겠으면 당연히 설명을 해야 하는 거고 내가 아는 거라도 용어가 조금이라도 어려워 보인다면 일단 요거는 요거고 요게 요렇게 되어서...로 나가는 식이죠. 그러다 보니 제 글은 빌드업이 무진장 까다롭고 산으로 가기도 쉬워서 쓰고 나면 아주 드라이해지는 경우가 많습니다.
