평소 타임라인에 아무말대잔치를 하는 편이지만 미식축구만큼 혼자 떠드는 종목이 없는 것 같습니다. 최근 NFL은 한창 플레이오프가 진행중이고 매주마다 재미있는 경기를 하고 있어 심심하신 분들은 보면 참 좋을 것 같은데(?) 관심있는 분들이 적은 것 같아 공감을 이끌어내기 위해 한 번 글을 올려 보겠습니다. 1. 미식축구의 매력 저는 지금까지 많은 스포츠를 섭렵해 왔는데 야구, 농구, 축구 같은 대중적인 종목에서부터 복싱, 배구, UFC같은 마이너한 종목까지 골고루 보는 편입니다. 하지만 정말 스포츠 시청에 있어서만큼은 미식축구를 따라갈 만한 종목이 없는 것 같습니다. 하는 건 별개로요. 온갖 다양한 방식으로 스포츠를 향유하는 덕후들이 가득한 미국에서 풋볼이 시장을 과점하고 있는 건 그만큼의 매력이 있다는 방증이라고 생각합니다. 그 이유를 한 번 생각해 보면 크게 세 가지가 떠오릅니다. 1) 대부분의 플레이가 정교하게 디자인되어 있다 : 미식축구는 연속성을 갖고 진행하는 게임이 아니라 중간중간마다 계속해서 플레이가 종료되고 작전타임(허들이라고 합니다)을 갖고 다음 플레이를 이어나갑니다. 그래서 매 플레이마다 패턴이 조밀하게 구현되어 전술적으로 꽉 짜여져 있습니다. 미리 연습해 놓은 패턴 플레이와 임기응변이 결합된 축구, 농구, 거의 대부분을 통계적 우연에 기초하고 있는 야구와는 전술적인 레벨에서 차이가 납니다. 또한 선수교체가 무제한이며 한 번에 플레이하는 인원은 11명으로 제한하는 반면 엔트리는 53명까지 허용하여 체력적으로 가장 최상의 상태로 모든 플레이를 사용할 수 있도록 보장하는 점도 특기할 만한 점입니다. 축구의 경우 연장에는 체력이 많이 떨어져 경기의 긴장감이 떨어지기도 한다는 점을 고려해 보면 미식축구가 더욱 특이하다는 점을 알 수 있습니다. 2) 개인의 피지컬과 두뇌 플레이의 결합 : 감독이 아무리 전술을 정교하게 짠다 하더라도 실제로 플레이하는 건 선수들입니다. 그리고 그 선수들은 전미에서 가장 우수한 피지컬 소유자들로 구성되어 있습니다. 필드에는 태클을 당해도 쓰러지지 않고 황소처럼 계속 밀어붙여 야드를 따내는 러닝백이 있고, 아무도 잡지 못할 높이의 공을 훌쩍 뛰어올라 고공에서 잡는 장신 와이드리시버가 있습니다. 전화번호부 두께의 플레이북을 모조리 외움과 동시에 100미터를 11초에 주파하는 괴물들이 가득한 이 스포츠는 진정으로 지성과 야수성의 결합이라고 할 만합니다. 3) 중계 기술의 발달 : 최근 NBA를 VR로 중계하려는 시도나 MLB에 360도 회전 카메라를 넣는 등의 시도들이 있지만 NFL은 계속해서 선도적으로 중계 기술을 발달시켜 왔습니다. 경기장 전체를 미리 스캔해서 필드에 그래픽 이미지를 덧씌우는 1st&10 기술, 실시간으로 헬멧에 소형 카메라를 달아 1인칭으로 보는 기술, 실시간 필드 플레이어 트래킹, 순간 속도 제공, 인사이드 더 파일론 캠 등은 NFL이 선도적으로 주도하고, 주도하려고 하는 중계 그래픽들 중 하나입니다. 2. 간단한 미식축구 규칙 이제 풋볼의 매력에 대해 설명드렸으니 이 스포츠를 이해하기 위해 어떤 규칙들이 있는지 설명드리도록 하겠습니다. 미식축구를 이해하기 위해 알아야 할 규칙은 오직 하나이며, 그 규칙이란 바로 아래의 문장입니다. 4번의 공격 기회 동안 10야드를 전진하지 못하면 공격권을 빼앗기고 만약 10야드 전진에 성공하면 공격 기회는 다시 4회로 리필된다. : 여기서 1번의 공격 기회란 공을 가진 선수가 태클을 당해 무릎이나 팔꿈치가 필드에 닿는 것을 의미하며, 혹은 공을 놓치거나 필드 밖으로 나가는 것을 포함합니다. 이 한 번의 공격 기회를 다운이라 하며 미식축구는 4번의 다운 안에 첫 번째 공격 시도보다 10야드 앞의 지점까지 공을 전진시켜야 합니다. 공을 전진시키는 방법은 들고 뛰는 것(러싱)과 공을 던져서 그 공을 받는 것(패싱) 두 가지가 있습니다. 만약 처음 지점보다 10야드 이상을 전진하게 되면 공격 기회는 다시 4회로 돌아가며 이를 퍼스트 다운이라고 합니다. 공격권을 유지하면서 상대의 진영 끝까지 들어가는 것을 터치다운이라 하며 일반적으로 7점을 획득합니다. 이제 공격권이 거의 남지 않았는데 갱신은 힘들어 보이고, 발로 차면 골대는 넘길 것 같아서 필드골을 넣을 경우 3점을 획득합니다. 예를 들어 보겠습니다.  위의 사진을 보면 흰색 옷의 선수가 공을 쥐고 있고 그 선수를 중심으로 11명의 선수들이 대형을 이루고 있습니다. 밑의 그래픽에는 왼쪽에서 오른쪽을 향하고 있는 화살표가 하나 있고, 1st & 10이라는 글자가 쓰여져 있습니다. 그리고 수비팀 뒤쪽으로 노란 선이 그어져 있군요. 오른쪽을 가리키는 화살표는 현재 공격팀이 이 방향으로 전진하고 있음을 의미합니다. 그리고 1st&10은 현재 4번의 공격 기회 중 첫 번째 기회를 시작하기 전이며 퍼스트 다운까지 10야드가 남았다는 의미입니다. 저 노란 선은 바로 그 10야드 지점을 의미합니다. 즉, 공격진이 패싱이든 러싱이든 네 번 안에 저 노란 선을 넘어가면 공격 기회는 다시 4회가 되겠죠. 여기서 만약에 공격진이 러싱을 선택해서 5야드를 전진했다고 합시다. 그럼 그 다음 화살표에는 어떻게 쓰여질까요? 2nd & 5가 되겠죠. 이번이 두 번째 공격 기회이고, 퍼스트 다운까지는 5야드 남았다는 의미입니다. 그 다음 감독은 패싱을 지시했는데 그날따라 손이 미끄러운 와이드리시버가 공을 잡지 못했네요. 그럼 그 다음은?  3rd & 5가 되겠죠. 이번 기회에도 저 노란선을 넘기지 못하면 터치다운을 노리고 4번째 공격을 감행하거나, 안전하게 필드골을 차 3점만 획득하거나, 필드골을 찰 거리가 없다면 공을 저 멀리 발로 차는 선택지가 있겠습니다. 3. 오펜시브 코디네이터처럼 생각하기. 러싱을 할까? 패싱을 할까? 자, 여러분은 미식축구 공격전술을 총괄하는 오펜시브 코디네이터입니다. 여러분에겐 매 다운마다 공격전술을 지시할 40초가 있습니다. 현재 스코어는 21:17로 지고 있으며, 남은 시간은 4쿼터 1분 23초, 타임아웃은 2개입니다. 상황은 3rd & 5입니다. 엔드존까지는 얼마 남지 않았습니다. 터치다운이 코앞이지만, 이번 공격에 실패할 경우 필드골을 차야 하는데, 그렇다면 역전하긴 힘듭니다. 어떻게 하시겠습니까? 여러분이 고려해야 할 공격의 규칙은 두 가지입니다. 1) 오로지 한 번의 전진패스만이 가능하다: 보통 후진 패스는 거의 없기 때문에, 패스는 한 번만이 가능하다고 생각해도 좋습니다. 그러니까 패스하고 또 패스하는 것은 안 됩니다. 그리고 공격의 시작점인 위의 파란 선(스크리미지 라인이라고 합니다)을 넘어서 패스하는 것도 안됩니다. 2) 공격을 시작하기 전 오로지 단 한 사람만이 움직이면서 플레이를 시작할 수 있다: 공을 갖고 있는 선수(센터라고 합니다)가 공을 뒤로 빼는 것을 스냅(snap)이라고 하는데 스냅과 동시에 공격이 시작됩니다. 그리고 스냅 전까지는 수비가 파란 선을 넘을 수 없습니다. 스냅 전에 공격진은 오로지 한 명만이 움직일 수 있습니다. 이는 선수의 가속을 용이하게 합니다. 다시 3rd&5상황으로 돌아오겠습니다. 3rd&5는 애매합니다. 짧은 패스를 할 수도 있고, 공을 들고 뛸 수도 있습니다. 패스하기엔 좀 짧고 안전하게 러싱으로 야드를 따내기엔 좀 깁니다. 여기서 두 가지를 깨달을 수 있습니다. 패스는 한 번에 긴 야드를 얻을 수 있지만, 대신 실패할 경우 조금의 전진도 얻을 수 없습니다. 러싱은 반면 안전하게 조금의 거리를 따내는 데 유용합니다. 아차, 다시 생각해 보니 여러분은 뉴올리언스 세인츠의 오펜시브 코디네이터 피트 카마이클이었습니다! 이건 플레이오프 게임이었고 상대방은 미네소타 바이킹스였네요! 세인츠는 올 시즌 두 명의 러닝백 듀오 앨빈 카마라(Alvin Kamara)와 마크 잉그램(Mark Ingram)을 보유하고 있습니다. 이런 선수들을 갖고 러싱을 안했다간 팬들의 비난은 폭주할 테고 인터넷에는 여러분들의 화형짤이 돌아다닐 겁니다. 헤드코치의 이상한 눈빛은 덤이구요. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tGuIl5wFpE 러싱을 하자! 러싱을 한다고 했을 때 중요한 건 러닝백이 돌파할 틈을 열어주는 것입니다. 이 틈을 갭(gap)이라고 합니다. 이 갭만 잘 열어 주면 여러분도 미식축구 선수가 될 수 있습니다. 갭을 여는 건 바로 센터 주변에 서 있는 다섯 명의 뚱땡이들입니다. 저들을 오펜시브 라인맨이라고 합니다.  저기 위의 센터, 가드, 태클이 오펜시브 라인맨들입니다. 여러분들은 오펜시브 라인맨들에게 중앙을 뚫으라고 지시합니다. 이런 광경을 상상하면서요.  오 그런데 수비가 중앙으로 밀집하기 시작합니다. 아무래도 상대편 디펜시브 코디네이터가 제 전술을 눈치챈 것 같습니다. 그리고 아까부터 우리 라인맨들 힘이 떨어져 보입니다. 그러면 더 크게 좌우측으로 흔들어야겠습니다. 이렇게요.  여기서 주목해야 할 건 63번 선수의 움직임입니다. 처음부터 오른쪽으로 크게 뚫고 나갈 생각이기 때문에 63번 눈앞의 마크맨은 사실 우리의 러닝백에게 큰 위협이 안 됩니다. 겉으로 보기엔 바로 눈앞의 디펜시브 라인맨을 막을 것처럼 보이는 우리의 63번은 사실은 시작하자마자 오른쪽으로 내달려 우리의 러닝백의 결정적인 갭을 만들 선수인 것입니다. 5야드를 일단 넘으면?
