1. 영화 캐롤은 퍼트리샤 하이스미스의 소설 'The Price of Salt(소금의 값)' 을 바탕으로 만들어진 영화입니다. 퍼트리샤 본인이 백화점 장난감 가게에서 일하던중 한 여성에게 강렬한 느낌을 받았고 그녀와 나눈 이야기를 토대로 2~3시간만에 써내려간 소설이 바로 소금의 값입니다. 소금의 값은 미국 정신의학협회가 동성애를 사회병질적 인격장애로 취급한 50년대에 100만 부 이상 팔려나간 소설입니다. 그녀의 데뷔소설은 히치콕 감독이 영화화 하였으며 '재능있는 리플리씨" 소설은 '태양은 가득히' '리플리' 라는 제목으로 영화화 되었습니다. 작가로서의 역량이 대단하였지만, 자신이 레즈비언이라는 사실을 알린 것은 80년대 말이었습니다. 레즈비언 작가라는 이름이 자신의 작품에 영향을 주지 않기 위함이었고, 데뷔후 약 30년간 그녀가 느낀 고민을 알수있을 것 같습니다. ...............................................    2. 캐롤은 현재 로튼 토마토에서 (2016.2.18 기준) 215명의 전문가들에게 8.6점, 신선도 93%를 자랑하고 있습니다. 메타크리틱에선 95점이라는 점수를 받고 있구요. 국내 평단에서도 굉장합니다. 최하 점은 8점이고 이동진 평론가는 10점을 주었습니다. 또한 제 88회 미국 아카데미 시상식 에서는 6개 부분 노미네이트를 비롯하여, 크리틱스 초이스시상식. 런던 비평가 협회상, 미국 작가 조합상, 미국 배우 조합상, 전미 비평가 협회상, 영국 아카데미, 골든글로브 등등... 22개의 각종 시상식과 영화제의 노미네이트 및 수상이 되었습니다. 요약하자면 많은 전문가들에게 '인정받은' 영화이며, 제 기억으로 최근 이렇게까지 호평이 극에 달한 영화는 없었던 것 같습니다. ...............................................  * 이하 스포일러와 주관적인 견해가 쓰여있습니다. 3. 이 영화는 '닥터 지바고 (1965)', '콰이강의 다리 (1957)' 라는 영화로 유명한 데이빗 린 감독의 '밀회 (1945)' 라는 영화의 많은 부분을 가져왔습니다. 영화 밀회는 가정이 있는 두 남녀가 연애를 하다 헤어지는 이야기로 '로맨스 영화의 정석'을 만든 영화입니다. '퀴어 영화' 라고 한다면 일반적인 로맨스 영화와는 다른 노선을 취하기 마련입니다. (ex 가장 따뜻한 색, 블루. 로드무비. 몬스터) 하지만 토드 헤인즈 감독은 이성애자의 연애의 정석인 영화 '밀회' 를 캐롤에 차용함으로써 퀴어영화에 대한 본인의 의지를 확고히 드러냅니다. 4. 영화 밀회는 수미상관 방식입니다. 첫 이야기는 남녀가 서로 이야기를 하다 여자의 친구가 그 자리에 오게되고 남자는 자리를 떠나게 됩니다. 캐롤도 마찬가지 입니다. 캐롤과 테레즈가 마주앉아 어떤 이야기를 하고있고 테레즈의 남자인 친구가 자리에 오게되며 캐롤이 자리를 떠납니다. 밀회를 보면 '혹시 저 두 남녀가 불륜아닐까?' 라는 의심의 눈초리를 가질 수 있을 것 입니다. 하지만 50년대 당시 여성 둘이 마주 앉아 이야기를 나누는 것 만으로 이 둘이 레즈비언일 것이라는 생각은 하지 못할 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그때 동성연애는 위에서도 언급했듯 미국 정신의학협회가 동성애를 사회병질적 인격장애로 취급한 50년대이기 때문입니다. 그렇기에 캐롤과 테레즈의 만남은 밀회보다 더 비밀스럽고 은밀합니다. 밀회에선 기차역이 밀회의 장소입니다. 서로 만나고 헤어지는 곳이며, 기차를 통해 각자의 집으로 돌아가며 각자의 삶의 자리에 구속됩니다. 캐롤에선 장난감 기차가 나옵니다. 그리곤 두 인물이 쳐다봅니다. 무미건조한 표정과 쳇바퀴 도는 자신들의 일상을 보는 듯 합니다. 기차. 두 영화에서의 기차가 사회적인 통념에서 벗어날 수 없는 속박이자 굴레라면 캐롤은 그 통념을 깨고 자신이 진정 사랑할 수 있는 것으로 움직이는 매개체가 됩니다. 5. 이 영화는 테레즈의 성장과, 캐롤의 선택이 돋보이는 영화랄 수 있습니다. 처음엔 식당에서 무엇을 주문해야 할지 몰라 캐롤이 시키는 주문 그대로 따라하며, 사진을 찍지만 사람을 찍는 것엔 두려운 모습을 보입니다. 하지만 점차 성장하며 거절도 못하고 결혼하려 했던 남자친구와의 결별. 자신이 하고싶은 일을 꾸려나가며 새 회사의 취직. 그리고 마지막으로 캐롤을 선택하는 그녀의 모습에서 테레즈의 성장을 볼 수 있습니다. 캐롤 또한 마찬가지 입니다. 테레즈의 어렷을 적 사진을 보며 딸과 겹쳐보이는 테레즈와 함께 하기 위해선 분명 딸과 테레즈 둘 중 한명을 선택해야 했고, 그녀는 테레즈를 선택합니다. (언뜻 생각하면 딸을 위한 선택일 수도 있을 것 같습니다.) 그리고 그녀들의 선택이 아름답게 비춰지는 마지막 장면. 영화 내내 테레즈가 캐롤을 기다리던 상황과 반대로 캐롤이 테레즈를 기다리며 서로의 모습이 마주치는 장면을 통해 영화의 마지막을 장식합니다. ...............................................  6. 저는 이 영화의 명장면을 뽑을 수가 없었습니다. 왜냐하면 위 포스터의 느낌을 보고 심쿵! 했던 느낌을 영화에서 받을 수 없었기 때문입니다. 포스터에서 보이는 두 여인의 모습은 그 감정이 정말 잘 표현된 것 같습니다. 영화에서는 두 사람의 시선이 마주치기 전과 후의 테레즈의 삶을 영화는 확실히 보여줍니다. 예쁘게 치장되어있는 수 많은 인형과 백화점의 수많은 손님들, 그리고 같이 일하는 동료들 속에 그녀는 영혼이 없어 보입니다. 그리곤 한 여인을 보고, 눈을 마주치고, 이야기를 나누며 자신이 칭찬받은 모자를 간직하는 모습을 보며 테레즈의 삶에 느껴지는 생동감. 테레즈의 무기력 한 삶에서 캐롤을 만나 그녀가 가져다주는 삶의 첫 시작이 저에게 너무나도 와닿지가 않았습니다. 캐롤이 잠깐 보이고 눈이 마주쳐버리고. 테레즈가 잠깐 한눈 파는 사이 사라졌다가 앞에 나타난 캐롤. 아니 포스터에서 봤던 두 사람이 마주치는 순간은 무언가 더 극적이고 아름다울 것만 같은 상황이었는데, 제가 봐왔던 여느 드라마나 영화에서 본것만 같은 장면은 너무나 뻔해 보였습니다. 너무나 중요한 시작인데도 불구하고 말이죠. 첫 대면의 불꽃이 블란쳇과 루니 마라 두 배우에게만 존재하는 느낌을 받게되니, 영화를 보는 관람자의 입장에서만 머물게 되었습니다. 7. 그러다보니 괜한 것들만 눈에 밟히기 시작합니다. 테레즈와 친구들이 영화를 보는 장면이 있는데 거기서 이런류의 말이 나옵니다. "나는 영화를 보면서 배우의 대사를 듣고 그 배우가 어떤 마음일지 적어가면서 영화 공부를 하고있어." 구밀복검 군은 테레즈가 자신의 삶을 주체적으로 살지 못하지만 친구들은 자신이 원하는 삶을 주체적으로 살아가는 모습의 대비를 위해 이런 대사가 나온 것이라고 설명 하였지만, 저는 이렇게 받아들였습니다. '아아 영화 에서 대사를 통해 둘의 이야기를 하는게 아니니까 대사 하나하나 주의깊게 듣고 둘의 마음을 해아려봐' 라는 가이드라인 처럼요. 영화 캐롤의 감상방법, 설명서, 튜토리얼. 설명충 같다고나 할까요. 테레즈가 캐롤의 집에 놀러가지만, 남편의 사건과 분위기가 안좋아지자 테레즈는 기차를 타고 돌아오게 됩니다. 이때 기차에서 우는 장면이 나옵니다. 그 장면이 정말 쌩뚱맞다고 느껴졌습니다. 테레즈가 울만한 근거가 있는 장면이 딱히 없는데 우는 장면이 나오니 지금 나만 이상한건가??? 라는 괴리감 까지 느껴지기 시작합니다. 캐롤과 테레즈가 여행을 가기전 남자친구는 뜯어말립니다. 왜냐하면 이미 청혼을 한 상태에서 유럽 여행을 가자고 제안을 하였고, 테레즈도 청혼을 받아들인 듯 하고 유럽 여행을 위해 돈도 모아두었습니다. 하지만 남자친구에게 제대로된 설명없이 단지 캐롤과 같이 있으니 머리가 맑아지고 살것 같다면서 여행을 가게 됩니다. 굉장히 무책임하고 황당한 테레즈의 언행을 보며 둘의 사랑이 저는 굉장히 불편하게 느껴집니다. 캐롤의 남편은 '윤리적으로 어긋난 증거' 를 위해 몰래 도청을 하게 됩니다. 이에 화가난 캐롤은 총을 쏘지만 다행이 총알은 없었습니다. 뭐 영화의 극적인 이야기를 위해 원작 소설에 없던 요소를 집어넣었다고 하는데, 이 또한 몰입을 방해하는 방법 아니었나 싶습니다. 8. 아 캐롤 캐롤. 영화는 보았는데 저가 얼이벌이해서 영화관에 늦게 입장하는 바람에 몇 분을 그만 놓쳤습니다. 초반 몇 분만 클립으로 떠도는 게 없을까 한참 찾아봤는데 안 보이더군요. ㅜㅜ 영화를 온전히 못 본 셈이니 확신할 수는 없는데요. 저의 생각은...

아무래도 퀴어영화다 보니 평론가들이 어느 정도 보너스 점수를 준 부분은 있을 거라고 생각해요. 하지만 거품은 아니고요. 너무 섬세한 영화라서 오히려 단조로와 보일 수도 있는데, 그건 엄격하게 통제된 고전극이 현대인의 감수성에 맞지 않는 것과 비슷한 현상 같습니다. 그럼에도 여성 관객들에게 강하게 다가오는 지점들은 분명히 있어요. 지적하신 남자친구에 대한 테레즈의 (겉으로 보기엔 \'어장관리\'적인) 태도를 납득할 수밖에 없다는 것, 테레즈는 남자에게 끌리지도 않고 그들의 구애가 귀찮기만 한데 정작 남자를 보호자로 두지 않으면 원하는 사회생활을 할 수가 없어요. 학교라든지 아무 곳에도 적을 두지 못한 사진작가 지망생이 뉴욕의 예술가 서클에 들어가고 싶어하는 거니까요. 게다가 당시가 무려 1950년대라는 점을 떠올려 보시면 그녀가 남친의 비난을 뿌리치는 게 얼마나 과감한 행위인지, 테레즈에게 공감의 초점을 맞추는 쪽이 맞는 듯해요. 또 테레즈가 청혼을 받아들였다는 단서는 전혀 없어요. 아마도 작품의 전개상 대충 이용해먹고 버리겠다는(?) 생각이었을 걸로 짐작됨...
캐롤이 빈 총을 쏘는 장면은 테레즈와 캐롤 사이에 구축된 멜로적 환상에서 불필요한 거품이 빠지는 장면이라고 봅니다. 그렇게 당당하고 위엄 있는 캐롤이 남성의 세계(총은 남성이죠)에서는 무력하기 짝이 없는 존재라는 것, 비록 테레즈와의 관계에서는 남성적이고 적극적인 역할을 맡고 있는 것 같지만 실제는 그도 여성이고 테레즈와 다를 바 없다는 사실을 뼈저리게 느끼게 하니까요. 만일 캐롤의 역할을 남성이 맡는 시나리오여서 통상적인 남녀의 불륜여행이었는데 빈 총을 쏘았다면 그건 거세된 남성의 무력감이겠지만, 여성인 캐롤에게 총은 애초부터 빈 총인 거죠. 그래도 캐롤은 쏘아야 해요. 그 스파이 녀석은 진짜 총 맞을 만한 놈이었죠.
테레즈가 캐롤에게 끌리는 것이 단순한 걸크러시인지 레즈비언으로서 정체성을 드러내는 것인지 조금씩 헷갈리면서 미묘한 감정의 줄타기를 따라가는 쾌감이 좋았어요. 영화를 보고 나니 이동진 씨가 구설수에 올랐던 이유를 알겠더군요. 이동진은 영화를 좀 잘못 읽었고 무리하게 꿰어맞추려다 실패한 부분이 많았어요. 보는 사람의 성적 지향에 따라(그리고 마이너리티적 감수성에 따라) 평가와 분석이 달라지는 영화란 것은 분명하지만, 저는 확실히 좋았어요. 다시 보고 싶은 영화네요.
