인간은 누구나 있는 그대로의 자신을 드러내는것을 두려워하며 있는 그대로의 타인을 받아들이는것에 익숙치 않습니다. 그러나 그와 동시에 인간은 태생적으로 타인의 이해를 갈구하고 타인을 이해하고 싶어하는 동물이기도 하죠. 그렇기에 인간은 항상 상처에 대한 두려움과 타인과의 소통에 대한 욕망 사이에서 갈팡질팡하고, 상처받고, 때로는 좌절하며 절망하기도 합니다. 그런 일련의 과정을 거치면서 적당히 속이고 타협하며 타인과 소통하는 법을 터득하는것을 우리는 '성장'이라고 부릅니다. 그러나 역내청에서 작가는 하치만을 통하여 이 '성장'에 대하여 의구심을 던지고 있죠. 하치만은 초등학교, 중학교 시절을 거치며 타인과의 소통에는 매우 큰 리스크가 따른다는 것을 여실히 체험했습니다. 하지만 타인과 소통하기 위해 적당히 속이고 타협하는 방식-작중 하야마 그룹을 통하여 묘사되는-은 그에게 있어서 받아들이기 힘든 것이었고, 따라서 하치만은 타인과의 소통을 포기해버립니다. 타인을 속여가며 소통하기보다는 아예 자기자신의 '소통에 대한 욕망'을 부정해버리는 쪽을 택한것이죠. 이런 하치만의 방법론은 작품 내 여러 에피소드에서도 계속 등장합니다. 타인과의 '소통'에 아직 익숙치 않은 고등학생들이 문제에 부딛혀 봉사부에 찾아올 때마다 하치만은 다크 히어로를 자청하죠. 여기서 눈여겨볼 점은, 그렇게 악역을 자처하고 희생하는데 있어서 하치만 본인이 어떠한 자부심이라던가 자긍심같은 것을 전혀 느끼고 있지 않다는 겁니다. 이것은 하치만이 단순한 츤데레라서가 아니라, 작가가 의도적으로 자기자신의 '소통에 대한 욕망'을 계속해서 부정하는것은 결코 타인을 속여가며 소통하는것에 대한 해결책이 될 수 없음을 시사하는 부분이라고 생각됩니다. 그러나 이런 하치만도, 봉사부에서 일련의 문제들을 해결해 가면서 점점 타인과 소통하는 법을 배우게 됩니다. 물론 여기에는 유이와 유키노 및 기타 봉사부 하렘 구성원들의 순애(..)가 큰 몫을 했구요. 그러나 애초에 타인을 속여가며 소통에 대한 욕구를 해소하는것에 결벽증에 가까운 거부감을 느꼈던 하치만은 점점 하렘 구성원들과의 관계가 밀접해지면서 그에 대한 본능적인 위화감을 느끼게 됩니다. 그리고 그것을 촉발시키는것 또한 유이와 유키노입니다. 유이는 애초에 하치만에 대한 연애감정으로 봉사부 일을 시작했습니다. 그러나 봉사부에는 하치만 이외에도 유키노가 있었고, '모두와 친하게 지내고 싶고 또 그래야만 하는' 유이는 남들은 접근하기 어려워하는 유키노에게 서슴없이 다가가고, 유키노 또한 그런 유이에게 점점 마음을 열게 되지요. 거기다 하치만의 철벽에 가로막혀 연애진도가 미진해지고, 유키노와의 관계또한 깊어지면서 유이는 점점 하치만과 유키노와 본인 자신을 모두 적당히 속여가며 타협하는데 한계를 느끼게 됩니다. 그리고 결국 본인의 연애감정을 부정함으로써 '봉사부원 모두가 친하게 지낼수 있는' 결론을 내리게 되지만, 이는 '결벽증 환자' 하치만에 의해 거부당합니다. 기존의 소통방식에 나름 적응해왔던 유이와는 다르게, 그러면서도 하치만과는 더더욱 다르게 기존의 소통방식에 적응하지 못했던 유키노는 타인을 속이며 살아남을 바에야 그냥 내가 손해보고 말겠다, 라는 하치만의 방식에 매력을 느낍니다. 그전까지 모든 잘못을 타인에게 전가시킬 뿐이었던 유키노 자신과 달리 하치만은 그 모든것까지도 본인이 끌어안았거든요. 여고생답게 이러한 동경은 곧 연애감정으로 발전합니다만, 이 쪽은 반대로 유키노 본인이 철벽-하치만과는 다른 이유로-을 치고 있었기 때문에, 츤데레조차 되기 힘들어하는 모습을 보여주죠. 유키노가 왜 모든 잘못을 타인에게 전가시키고 외면할수밖에 없었는지에 대해서는 아마 12권부터 나오지 않을까 생각합니다. 그리고 그에 따라 하치만이 어떤 결론을 내릴지 역시 결정되겠지요. 그동안 여러 라노베 원작 애니를 접해왔고, 또 그에비해 라노베는 전혀 접해보지 않은 입장에서 애니를 보고 원작을 읽을 필요성을 느껴본 적은 한번도 없었습니다. 어른의 사정으로 생략된 부분이나 각색된 부분이 원작에서는 어떻게 다루어졌는지 굳이 궁금증이 들지 않았거든요. 심지어는 애니메이션, 아니 최소 만화가 아니였다면 메리트가 확 떨어졌을거라고 생각했던 작품들도 더러 있었죠. 그런데 역내청 tva를 정주행하고 나서는 원작을 꼭 읽어봐야겠다고 생각이 들었습니다. 어른의 사정으로 인하여 생략된 부분이, 하치만의 심리가, 또 그것을 통해 원작자가 전달하려는 메시지가 너무 궁금했거든요. 5권정도까지 읽고 이 글을 쓰려는 마음을 먹게 되었는데, 11권을 다 읽고 나니 미완결인 작품에 대해 리뷰를 적는다는 것이 꽤나 망설여졌습니다. 11권까지의 내용으로는 유키노와 하야토, 하루노 이 세 등장인물에 대하여 서술할수가 없었거든요. 하야토는 겉으로는 하치만과 완벽히 대척점에 위치한 인물이자 연적이죠. 하지만 주요 등장인물 답게 그 안에는 뭔가 숨겨져 있고, 유키노시타 가문과 대체 어떠한 일이 있었는지를 알아야 하고, 하루노역시 겉으로는 그저 동생에 대한 애정을 한껏 뒤틀어 분출하는 사디스트 시스콘(...)일 뿐이지만 그 안에는 하야토와 마찬가지로 뭔가가 들어있습니다. 이 역시 유키노시타 가문과 하야토 사이에 무슨일이 있었는지 모르면 알 수 없는 것들이구요. 뭐 지금까지 전개로 봐서는 역시나 정략결혼 떡밥이지 않을까 싶습니다만 그건 작가 말곤 아무도 모르는 거니까요. 유키노의 하치만에 대한 감정은 동경을 지나서 약간은 맹신에 가깝지 않을까 생각합니다. 여러면에서 조금 묘한 인물이죠.
