5년 전 초가을에 있었던 이야기입니다. 대학생이었던 저는 당시에 2인1실 기숙사에서 살고 있었는데, 방은 그닥 크지도 않고 좁지도 않은, 침대2개에 책상2개가 있는 방이었습니다. 그리고 특이하게 침대가 출입문 쪽에 하나 창틀 쪽에 하나 있었는데, 제가 쓰는 침대가 바로 창틀 쪽 침대였죠. 그날도 평소처럼 친구네 방에서 같이 스타리그를 본 후 좀 늦게 방에 들어왔습니다. 룸메이트는 벌써 자고 있더군요. 저도 이빨만 대충 닦고 침대에 누웠습니다. 그런데 그날따라 희안하게 달빛이 밝아서 커튼을 쳤는데도 잠이 잘 안 오더군요. (저는 잘때 빛에 굉장히 민감합니다) 그렇게 뒤척이다가 결국 창문 반대쪽을 보고 옆으로 누워 잠이 들었습니다. 그러다가 문득 잠에서 깼는데, 갑자기 등 뒤쪽, 그러니까 창문쪽에서 형언할 수 없는 싸늘한 기운이 느껴지는 겁니다. 창틀쪽, 그러니까 제 등 뒤에 무언가가 분명히 있고, 그것이 저를 쳐다보고 있다는 느낌이 들었습니다. '모골이 송연하다' 라는게 바로 이런 거구나 싶더군요. 평소에 가위는 자주 눌려도 귀신은 보지 못했던 저인데도 이건 정말 너무 무서워서 뒤돌아서 확인해보기는 커녕 누워있는 그 상태에서 움직일수조차 없었습니다. 그렇게 정말 1초가 1시간처럼 느껴지도록 계속 깨 있었는데, 어느순간 갑자기 조용히 누워있던 룸메이트 녀석이 벌떡 일어나서 불을 키더니 천천히 몸을 돌려서 제 뒤쪽 창문을 쳐다보는 겁니다. 그리고 저도 일어나서 창문쪽을 보았는데, 역시나, 아무것도 없더군요. 창문쪽에서 느껴지던 싸늘한 기운 역시 사라졌고요. 저는 이게 무슨 조화인가 싶어 룸메이트 녀석한테 갑자기 불은 왜 켰냐고 물어봤습니다. 처음엔 얼버무리더니, 제가 느낀것을 사실대로 이야기 해주니 그녀석도 자다가 깨서 저와 똑같은 것을 창문쪽에서 느꼈다고 하더군요. 그래도 그녀석은 평소에도 좀 똘끼(?)가 있는 녀석이라, 눈 딱 감고 일어나서 확인해본 거였다네요. 결국 그게 뭐였는지는 결론을 내지 못했습니다. 다음날에 같은 기숙사 건물에 사는 다른 학생들에게도 몇번 물어봤는데 뭔 멍멍이 소리냐고 핀잔만 들었고.. 그날 이후로 그 방에서 비스무리한 경험조차 다시 겪지 못했습니다만, 그날 밤만 생각하면 아직도 약간 오싹한 느낌이 듭니다. 과연 저와 룸메이트가 느꼈던 그 오싹한 기운은 대체 뭐였을까요?
