세계 최고의 리그 롤챔스. 늘 재미있게 보고 있습니다. 연차가 쌓이고 쌓여서 벌써 여러 해가 됐네요. 그런데 매번 경기 보면서 늘 이상하다고 느끼는 점이 하나 있습니다. 경기가 끝났을 때. 즉, 승리가 확정되는 순간. 선수들이 유독 자리에 앉은 채로 있습니다. 곧바로 일어서는 광경을 보기가 매우 드뭅니다. 감독, 코치가 들어왔을 때도 보통 앉은 자세 그대로 맞이합니다. 마치 다 같이 그렇게 하기로 서로 약속이라도 했다는 듯이, 혹은 앉아서 대기하라는 명령을 받은 군인처럼 늘 앉아있습니다. 포스트 시즌을 확정짓는 경기나 결승 진출전 등의 예외가 있기는 하지만 대부분의 일상적인 풍경은 늘 그렇습니다. 앉아있는 것 자체가 이상하거나 문제 있다는 것은 아닙니다. 승리의 기쁨에 취했다고 해서 반드시 미친 듯이 소리치며 좋아해야 한다는 법은 없으니 자리에 앉아있는 모습 그 자체도 자연스러운 모습 중 하나인 것은 맞습니다. 하지만 비슷한 풍경의 북미, 유럽 LCS 그리고 중국 LPL의 모습과 비교해봐도 유독 차이가 느껴지는 부분입니다. 롤챔스 선수들은 유난히 자리에 앉은 상태 그대로 쭉 있는 경향이 훨씬 강합니다. 국내에서 활동하는 선수들만의 특징일까요. 국내에서 활동하다가 해외로 건너간 선수들의 모습을 보면 꼭 그런 것만도 아닙니다. 한국에 있을 때는 앉아있던 선수들도 북미나 유럽에서 활동할 때는 안 그렇거든요. 저만의 주관적인 느낌이나 인상인지는 모르겠지만, 여타 다른 종목 이스포츠들의 과거, 현재의 모습과 비교해봐도 롤챔스는 유난히 그런 면이 눈에 띄네요. 유도나 육상, 골프나 축구 같은 스포츠와 비교하면 그 차이는 훨씬 더 두드러집니다. 물론 바둑이나 당구, 포커 같은 대회와 비교했을 때는 큰 차이점이 없을 수도 있습니다. 이겼을 때도 차분하게, 표정변화 없이 침착하고 조용하게 그 순간을 만끽하며 넘기는 선수들도 많습니다. 종목의 특징이 반영된다고도 할 수 있겠습니다. 미국 프로레슬링 경기에서 선수들이 승리한 후에 하는 행동들과 비교한다면 감정 분출의 극과 극을 볼 수 있습니다. 그러므로 다른 분야의 스포츠와 비교하면서 이상하다거나 부자연스럽다고만 판단할 것도 아니라는 생각은 있습니다. 다만 종종 멋진 경기를 보고 나면 팬이 아니더라도 시청자로서 굉장한 쾌감을 느끼는 것과는 달리, 막상 자리에 앉아 차분하게 승리를 만끽하는 선수들의 모습을 보면 차갑게 식거나 조금 부자연스럽게 느껴져서 기분이 가라앉는 경우가 아주 가끔 있었습니다. 어쩌다가 그랬고 별것 아니라고 생각했던 것들이 해가 쌓이고 쌓여 누적되니 이제는 좀 이상하게 느껴지네요.
