2015년 11월 5일 4시 50분, 머리맡에 놓아둔 아이폰의 알람이 울고 눈을 뜨자마자 항상 하던대로 하루를 시작하기 위해 화장실로 갑니다. 어제 퇴근길 마지막 게임에서 카드 30장을 다 뽑았지만 딜이 부족해서 500승을 목전에 두고 항복을 눌렀던 아쉬움을 뒤로 하고 무난하게 마지막 승리를 달성합니다. 9번째 황금 영웅, 발리라 생귀나르가 붉은송곳니 방어구를 입고 있는 모습을 잠깐 감상해봅니다.
학점을 포기해가며 즐겼던 WOW는 현실적인 문제로 손 놓은지 오래였고 대세게임인 LOL 역시 부모님의 안부를 수시로 묻는 훈훈한 분위기 때문에 월드챔피언십 관전러로 전직한 상태였습니다. 똥3 역시 돈이 있어도 입장을 못하게 만드는 나이트클럽 기도들처럼 저에게 모욕감을 줬기에 쿨하게 환불한 상태였고 다른 게임을 찾던 중 눈보라사의 차기작, 워크래프트 세계관의 게임이 나온다는 이야기를 들었습니다. 하지만 역시나 클로즈베타 당첨의 행운이 저에게 올 리 없었고 어깨 너머로 동생이 사적을 플레이하는 것을 보다가 2014년 1월 오픈베타 때에야 비로소 “손사래”의 돌겜 여정을 시작할 수 있었습니다.
과금을 통해 강력한 덱을 갖춘 상태에서 등급전 사다리를 빠르게 올라가는 것보다는 소소하게 카드를 얻고 덱을 맞춰나가는 소과금 유저로서의 돌겜 여정을 시작하였습니다. 아마도 모든 카드와 덱을 보유하였음에도 이기지 못할 때의 좌절을 경계한 방어심리가 다소 섞여있었겠죠. 황금 갤빈 멕카토크를 위한 기본 결제 후 일일퀘로 골드가 모일 때마다 성실하게 투기장 입장권을 구입했습니다. 무한 투기장이 가능한 실력이 아니었기에 2014년 7월 첫 모험 모드인 낙스라마스의 저주가 나왔을 때 제대로 사용 가능한 덱은 파멸의 수호병 2장을 채택한 위니 흑마 덱 뿐인 상태였습니다. 모인 골드는 꼬박꼬박 700골드 씩 낙스라마스 각 지구를 여는데 들어갔지만 일단은 영웅 난이도 모험 모드 헤딩 자체가 꽤나 재미있더군요. 또한 클로즈베타 때부터 1년 여의 긴 시간 동안 단 한 장의 카드 추가도 없어 운빨망겜 현실을 한탄하던 유저들에게 매주 새로운 카드들이 공개되면서 이 카드와 덱을 연구하고 메타가 매주 급격히 변하는 것을 구경하는 것 역시 상당히 재미있었습니다.
이 시기에 늘어난 시간 덕분에 전설 등급 달성을 목표로 세웠습니다. 5등급까지는 연승 보너스가 있기 때문에 금방 달성이 가능하지만 그 이후에는 연승 보너스도 없고 상대하는 유저들의 실력도 저등급 때보다 높아서 올라가기가 쉽지 않았습니다. 또한 본격적으로 위니 흑마 덱을 등급전에서 굴려보니 당시 등급전에 많이 사용되던 덱 중 약한 드루나 방밀 전사는 상대할 만 했지만 주문 도적, 죽메 사냥꾼에게 약한 편이었고 특히나 오토 주술사들한테 털리고 멘탈이 깨지는 일이 종종 있었습니다. 사냥꾼으로는 큰 실수를 하거나 패말림이 심하지 않는 경우에는 개를 풀면서 오토 주술사를 안정적으로 잡아낼 수 있었기에 결국 저 역시 주력 덱을 야수 냥꾼으로 바꾸게 되었습니다. 사냥꾼으로 상대하기 힘든 전사를 많이 만나면 자군야포로 명치를 치자고 마음을 먹었지만 결국 야수 냥꾼 덱만으로 9월 시즌에 전설 등급을 달성하게 되었습니다.
쉬엄쉬엄 등급전과 투기장을 즐겼고 첫 번째 확장팩, 고블린과 노움이 출시될 때 즈음에는 이미 소과금 유저라고 할 수 없을 정도의 카드를 보유하고 있었고 출시 당일에도 모아둔 골드로 30팩 이상의 카드팩을 개봉했던 것 같습니다. 이 시기에 사냥꾼, 약한 드루이드의 500승을 달성하였고 국가고시도 무사히 잘 마쳤습니다. 시험 마치고 근무 시작하기 전에 라그나로스를 픽하는 실력을 뽐내며 투기장 첫 12승을 찍었습니다.
또한 이 시기에 전사 500승을 목표로 하였는데 그 전에 500승을 달성했던 직업들은 필드를 장악하고 명치를 치는 능동적인 직업이었는데 방밀 전사는 개념 및 플레이 스타일이 이전에 즐겼던 덱들과 전혀 다른 덱이어서 많이 져가면서 힘들게 500승을 달성하였습니다. 다른 직업 500승을 먼저 목표로 했거나 500승 페이스가 조금 늦었더라면 손님 전사로 꿀 빨면서 즐겁게 전사 500승을 달성할 수도 있었는데 지나고 보니 안타까웠습니다.
트렌드 덱 메이킹이나 상대에 따른 덱 튜닝, 꼼꼼한 카드 카운팅은 포기하고 빠른 템포의 덱, 실수했거나 꼬인 경기는 쿨하게 포기해가면서 출퇴근, 자투리 시간을 활용해가며 전직업 500승을 향해 나아갔습니다. 템포 마법사 덱을 활용해 마법사는 금세 500승을 달성했고, 이어 용 사제 덱으로 사제 500승을 달성하였습니다.
안타까운 것은 손님 전사 때에도 그랬듯 항상 500승 달성 후에 빠마 기사, 어그로 10랄 등의 덱이 인기를 끌면서 해당 직업들이 등급전을 장악하더라구요. 저는 항상 강한 덱으로 꿀 빨면서 500승도 달성하고 싶었는데 말이죠. 마지막에 남은 건 멸종 위기의 직업인 주술사, 도적이었습니다. 추석 연휴 즈음 클래식 주술사 덱으로 주술사 500승을 달성했고 마지막으로 기름 도적 덱으로 도적 500승을 달성했습니다.
원래는 그 동안 경험해보지 못한 덱들을 연습하면서 RopeCoach를 본받아 밧줄 장인이 되기로 마음 먹었으나 2시즌 연속으로 5등급 보상받기가 위태로워서 2016년 1월 시즌에는 양심을 팔고 빠마 기사와 어그로 스랄을 적극 활용하고 있습니다.
