1. 샬럿빌 사태 2017년, Charlottesville, Virginia 에서 Unite the Right rally 라는 백인우월주의자들의 집회가 열렸습니다. 이 글의 주제가 아니니 내용은 나무위키 링크로 대체하겠습니다. https://namu.wiki/w/%EB%B2%84%EC%A7%80%EB%8B%88%EC%95%84%20%EC%83%AC%EB%9F%AC%EC%B8%A0%EB%B9%8C%20%ED%8F%AD%EB%8F%99 샬럿빌 사태에 대한 본인의 대한 생각과 이 글에 연관있는 부분을 요약하자면 1. 전통적으로 누려지던 블루칼라 백인남성의 기득권이 Affirmative Action, 페미니즘, 이민등으로 약화됨으로 인한 상대적 박탈감 2. 자국 정부가 더이상 자국민을 위해 행동하지 않고 외부의 (이 경우엔 글로벌리스트, 등등) 이득을 위해 움직이고, 그 행동의 결말은 "원주민"인 백인들의 사회적 거세, 이민으로 의한 Replacement (대체) - 정도라고 생각합니다. 2. 홍콩 제가 이글을 쓰려고 마음먹은 이유는 한국 웹에서 2019년 홍콩사태에 대한 반응은 사실상 100%가 어마어마한 대륙중국에 대한 인종적 혐오와 시위참가하는 홍콩인에 대한 동정인거 같습니다. 대충 눈팅해본 결과 클리앙,일베,디시,펨코,PGR,개드립 등등 차이가 별로 없더군요. 단지 중공을 한국정치에 대비해 누구에 투영하느냐의 차이가 있는데, 뭐. 그런데 제가 보는 관점은 좀 많이 다른것 같아서 한번 글을 써보려고 마음먹었습니다. (참고로 저는 조부모님께서 두분다 일제강점기를 겪으신 "100%" 군필 한국입니다. 다른사이트에서 이런글을 쓰면 "네다음 조선족" 이라는 반응이 올것 같아서 미리 말씀립니다.) 일단 외부인의 시각으로 홍콩에 대해 대충 살펴본 제 감상은 대충 이렇습니다: i. 영국에 의한 홍콩 조차이후 홍콩의 부는 사실상 중국대륙의 부를 서구로 "수탈" 하는 과정에서 나온 콩고물로 지어진 피의 상아탑이다. (뭐, 이영훈 같은분은 반대하시겠지만, ^^) ii. 별거가 100여년이상 지나다보니 어느정도 대륙과 홍콩, 특히 북경을 위시한 공산당 엘리트 (특히나 비 광동적), 그리고 넓은 의미로는 대륙인민과 문화적 간격이 넓어졌는데, 그 "차이"가 점점 탈아입구적, 명예백인 담론으로 흐르는것 같다. 갑자기 주제를 바꿔서 경제로 가봅시다. 개혁개방 이전, 1978년 중국의 GDP는 1500억 달러 (156USD/capita) , 홍콩의 GDP는 183억 달러 (3923USD/capita) 이었지만, 현재에 와서는 중국은 120조 달러 (8800USD/capita), 홍콩은 3400억 달러 (46193USD/capita) 인 상황입니다. 중국 GDP의 12%에서 자그만치 2.8%로 "추락" 해버린 것지이요. 따지고 보자면 홍콩은 정상적으로 찬찬히 성장한거고, 중국이 "비상식적"으로 급격히 성장한것인, 중국이 따라잡은것이지 홍콩이 추락한것이 아니지만, 상대적으론 그렇게 느껴질수 있을수도 있겠죠 - 샬럿츠빌에 나타난 백인들의 천천한, 느긋한, "상식적" 발전이 이민자,여성,유색인종 등등의 "비상식적"인, 급격한 발전에 상대적으로 추락한것으로 느껴진것 처럼요. (모든 샬럿츠빌 사태를 참가한 백인남성을 시대에 "뒤떨어진" 블루칼라로 어림짐작하는게 아닌, 대체적 흐름을 이야기하는것임을 양해 부탁드립니다.) 이런 사실을 보면, 그 "좋은 옛날"에는, 영국인의 식민지배하에선 2등신민 이었지만, 3등신민인 대륙인보다는 우월한, "명예백인"의 우아한 서구적, 도시적 생활이 너무나도 화려하게 느껴졌을것 같습니다. (이런 광경을 보다보면 일제강점기 시절 일본에 부역하던 "황국신민", 혹은 만주국에서 "지나인"보다 신분적으로 우월했던 "일본인(조선)"인이 머릿속에서 오버랩되서 보이는건 피할수 없는 같습니다.) 결국엔 근본적 질문은, "홍콩인" 은 원래 중화민족 이었으나, 100여년이 흐른 지금, "홍콩인"은 무엇인가? 인것 같습니다. 그 좋던 옛시절땐 3등신민 대륙인보다는 나은 2등신민 이었지만, 요즈음에는 더이상 홍콩인들이 잘나가는게 아닌 사실. 반환이후 좀 잘나가는 사람들은 이미 영미권 국가로 이민가버린 사실. 막연한 서구적 사상에 대한 동경. 거기에 또 선전,상하이등 대륙 대도시에서 고급교육받은 상위 1%들이 악으로,깡으로,헝그리정신으로 이 악물고 사다리를 올라 타는 사실. 여러한 현실에 홍콩인들이 할수있는 선택은 몇개 없어보입니다. - 1. 포기하고 이민가기 - 2. 현실에 순응하고 "명예백인"의 지위를 내려놓고 점점더 격화되가는 경쟁에 뛰어들기 - 3. ??? 눈때중으로 밴쿠버,샌프란시스코,시드니 등등의 최근 인구통계를 보면, 1번을 선택할 사람은 이미 앵간해선 다 한것 같습니다. 은퇴할 나이 다되고, 이미 홍콩에 부동산이 있는 노년층이라면 모를까, 2030대 젋은이들이 2번 선택을 할것이라고 생각하기 힘들다면 남은건 3번, ??? 이겠고, 이것이 개인적으로 2019년 홍콩 사태의 본질이라고 생각합니다. 물론 여기엔 1984를 따라가는 대륙의 상황, 시진핑의 1인숭배 독재 가속화 등등이 있겠지만, 냉정하게 말해서 그 "자유로은" 서구랑 저런 1984 적인 디스토피아랑 얼마나 차이있겠습니까. 프리즘 폭로나온게 몇년이나 됬다고요. (이 부분은 좀 논란이 될것 같지만: 막말로, 잉글랜드북부, 미 러스트벨트,딥사우스 같은데 가보면 그냥 평범하게 살고, 술마시고, 섹스하고, 마약하고, 프로스포츠 보는, 1984의 Prole 적인 삶을 나름 재미있게 살고 있는것 같더군요. 그렇다고 코스모폴리탄적인 뉴욕,런던,파리시민들이 이상적인 완전한 "자유"를 누린다고 보기도 어렵더군요. 런던의 CCTV갯수, "혐오발언"으로 잡혀가는 영국인들, 프랑스에 도입중인 안면인식기술 (물론 이런 마크롱피셜이긴 하지만)들을 보면 솔직히 홍콩 젋은이들이 좀 나이브 한것 같기도 합니다.) 포르투갈이 떠날때 마카오인한테 포르투갈 시민권을 준것과는 다르게 (물론 인구수의 절대적 차이가 있다고는 해도) 영국해외여권으로 퉁친 영국한테 한번 뒤통수 맞았는데도, 소위 "주인님"한테 다시 달려가는것이 비판적으로 말하자면 말콤 X가 예전에 연설한 "House negro"란것이 생각나더군요. (참고: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Message_to_the_Grass_Roots) 스톡홀름 신드롬 같다고도 할까요. 3. 대륙과 비교 1980년, 베이징, 상하이, 선전의 인구는 각각 800만, 600만, 그리고 사실상 없는수준 이었습니다. 그런데 2015년에는 베이징은 2500만, 상하이도 2500만, 선전은 1200만입니다. 홍콩은 고작 500만에서 730만으로 늘어났는데 이런 주택난이 일어났습니다. 물론 무역,금융허브에 섬이라는 제약이 있죠. 여하튼 둥젠화 행정장관때 연간 8만5천을 짓는 계획이 나왔으나 야당의 반대, 부동산 재벌의 반대, 경제위기 등등 때문에 어영부영 넘어가다가 이런 사단이 났죠. 싱가폴이나 중국 같은경우에는 그냥 국영화든 뭐든해서 밀어 붙였겠지만 영국식 법체계의 홍콩에선 사실상 불가능하죠. 그런데 문제는 이 주택난은 따지고보면 100% 홍콩인들의 잘못인거죠. 자기네들이 뽑은 정치인들과, 자유경제에서 토지를 대다수 보유하는 부동산 재벌이 으쌰으쌰하는건 따지고보면 민주정의 묘미가 아니겠습니까?? 또 홍콩은 베이징에 세금도 안내고, 국방에 돈도 안써도 되서 재정적으로 여유가 넘처나고, 규제등등도 매우 빈약하고, 대륙에서 값싼 노동자가 물밀듯이 쏟아지는 리버태리안의 이상향과도 같은곳이지만, 결론은 작금의 현실인것 같습니다. 자유주의, 무책임한 이민, 님비를 규제할 건강한 규제의 부재가 결말이 이렇게 된걸보면서 예전에 제가 가졌던 서구적, 미국적 선입견이 점점 부숴져 가는걸 느끼고 있는것 같습니다. 4. 서구 서구언론들은 이번 홍콩사대를 보고 신이 난듯이 보도를 해내고 있죠 - 조용히 보다보면 마치 "북폭무새" 마냥 "이번엔 진짜 중국붕괴한다" 주문을 외우는거 같긴 하지만요. 그런데 재밌는건 서구에서 일어나는 시위에 대해서는 상대적으로 침묵을 하고있는데, 예를들어 프랑스 노랑조끼 시위 집압과정에서 사망 11명 이상, 2500명 이상 부상을 당해도 상대적으로 서구에선 조용하고, 예전 이라크전에 대해 런던에서 반미,반전시위에 100만명 이상이 모여도 뉴욕타임즈는 조~용 하더군요. 앵무새마냥 인권,쟈유 운운하면사 개입을 운운하는것은 마치, 식민주의,제국주의시절 선교사를 보내고, 그 선교사가 죽으면 명분으로 침략하는 행위와 얼마나 다른지 잘 모르겠습니다. 거기에 또 이라크에서 한 개판을 보면 뭐... 비쥬얼적으로 가보면 이 비디오를 보면 https://twitter.com/mibuxiaode/status/1188168535110905856?s=21 솔직히 토인들을 놀리는 좋은 시절의 식민지 1등시민의 헛짓거리가 보이는건 저뿐인것 같나요? (여기에 제가 전에쓴 인종담론글을 읽고 보시면 좀더 웃길듯 합니다.) 또 호주의 Tom Wilson 이라는 의원이 홍콩가서 시위참가하면서 트윗을 했는데, 문제는 이양반이 8년전 Occupy Melbourn protest에 물대포를 쏘라고 트윗을 했더군요. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/oct/07/tim-wilson-joins-hong-kong-marchers-but-draws-fire-for-historic-tweet 레딧에선 요즘 어마어마한 반중감정이 전체적 동양인에 대한 인종차별 sentiment로 향하는것이 느껴지는거 같기도 하고요 (솔직히 블리자드-게임에 관련되니깐 터지는거 보니 조금 웃기기도 합니다.) 한장으로 요즘 트렌드를 조롱해보자면  이게 딱 들어맞는것 같습니다. 5. 결론 서구 자유민주주의적 세계관에서 보면 홍콩인들에게 어느정도 동정이 가는건 당연한것 같습니다. 시진핑,그리고 공산당 정권에서 일어나는 살육,인권유린등등을 변호하는것도 아닙니다. 그러나 위에 설명한것과 같이, 저의 개인적 "궁예질"로 보았을때는 그동한 댓가없이 누려오던 상대적 우월감이 사라지는, 빼앗기는 과정에서 나오는 울분,분노와 정체성의 위기가 이 사태의 본질인것 같습니다. 좀 제가 비관적이라 그런지는 몰라도 열성적 홍콩젋은이들이 "옳바른" 사상적 이상향을 향해 악마적 공산당에 저항하는 그림이 아니라, 상대적 우월감이 사라져가고, 정체성이 흔들리고, 경제적으로 암울한 젊은이들의 반동적 uprising이라는 그림이 나오더군요. 중국에선 자유민주주의가 반동적인것이고, 서구에선 "극우"가 반동적인것 처럼요. 여담으로 요즘 미국 사회 분위기가 조금씩 황화론 쪽으로 가는것 같아서 "중국인보다는 그나마 나은 "동맹"국민 한국인"으로서" 걱정이 안된다고 할수는 없는거 같더군요. 다만 홍콩의 작금의 일들은... 말씀하신 내용들이 기저에 깔려있을지도 모르긴 하겠습니다만 한편으로는 대륙인들이 실패하고 입 닫아버린 '민주화 투쟁'의 성격도 가지고 있어서 단순하게 한 관점에서 이렇다 라고 결론 내리기에는 좀 복잡한 것 같습니다.
