저는 헬스장 웨이트 존이 불편해요. 이런 얘기를 하면 저를 아시는 분이라면, 왜 하고 생각하는 사람이 많겠죠. 제가 운동을 잘 하지는 않지만, 그래도 꾸역꾸역 헬스를 사오년, 크로스핏을 일이년 했으니 사실 또래 여자 중에서 트레이너가 아닌데도 이만큼 근력 운동에 친숙하게 지낸 사람은 많지 않거든요. 아무리 운동에 대한 관심이 많아졌다고 해도 말이죠. 처음 운동은 피티로 시작했어요. 누구나 그렇듯 살을 빼려고 갔어요. 처음에는 운동도 하기 싫고 이걸 왜 하나 싶었는데, 세상에. 바벨이 너무 좋은 거예요. 하체도 있고 상체도 있었지만 전 등운동이 너무 좋았어요. 로우로 등을 딱 쪼여주면 크 이거야 하면서 괜히 스스로가 멋있어 보이기도 하고, 무엇보다 데드리프트가 최고였죠. 땅에 있는 무게를 딱 올렸을 때 쾌감이 있어요. 오늘은 들 수 있을까 내일은 들어야지 설레는 마음으로 잠에 들 정도였으니. 내일은 금요일이 아니라 등요일 내가 제일 좋아하는 날이네 그러고 잤어요. 제정신은 아니었죠. 그러다 헬스를 혼자 다녀도 보고, 크로스핏 박스에도 다니기 시작했어요. 확실한 건 말이에요. 피티를 하는 중이라면 헬스장 다니는 게 가장 편안하죠. 운동 프로그램을 누가 봐주고 운동을 가르쳐주는 것도 좋지만, 문제는 그게 아니에요. 기구 사용을 마음껏 할 수 있거든요. 그거 그냥 가서 쓰면 되는 거 아닌가 하실 수 있으니, 자세히 이야기해 볼게요. 보통 헬스장에는 아주 큰 곳이 아니고서야, 스쿼트랙 하나, 많아야 두 개 정도 있어요. 차라리 기구를 쓴다면 괜찮은데, 여자가 프리웨이트를 한다고 마음을 먹기 시작하면 그게 문제가 아주 복잡해져요. 헬스를 하는 사람들은 정해져 있죠. 저기 런닝머신 타는 사람들 말고요. 웨이트 존에는 보통 나이 지긋한 아저씨와 퇴근 하고 온 직장인과 늘어진 나시를 입은 백수 동생 같은 아무튼 맨날 가면 늘 보는 얼굴들이 있어요. 다들 신경 안 쓰고 있는 것처럼 보이지만 대충 머리에 그런 게 있어요. 아, 쟤가 보통은 벤치 쓰면 저거 했으니까 저 놈이 벤치 다 쓰면 내가 이거 해야겠다. 그런 미묘한 웨이브들이 있거든요. 이런 것들은 그들끼리는 잘 돌아가요. 그런데 침입자가 오면 말이 달라지죠. 차라리 좀 큰 헬스장이면 괜찮아요. 아니면 여성 비율이 높은 헬스장이라도 할만하죠. 하지만 동네에 스쿼트렉 꼴랑 하나 있는 곳이면 거기서 젊은 여자가 스쿼트를 하고 있다고 하면, 자연스럽게 시선이 쏠려요. 그리고 뭔가 가르치고 싶은 사람이 늘어나죠. 운동을 하고 있는데 등이 따가워요. 뭔가 잘못한 기분이에요. 도끼병인가? 싶어서 주위를 보면 누군가와 눈이 마주쳐요. 내가 기구를 오래 썼나? 뭘 잘못했나? 한참 생각하다 보면 저기서 트레이너가 와요. 무슨 말 할지는 알아요. 아, 운동 좋아하시는구나. 피티영업은 이 말로 시작하는 게 국룰인가 봐요. 혼자서 운동하는 여자만큼 피티 영업의 타겟이 되기 좋은 사람은 없어요. 차라리 시합을 준비할 정도로 운동을 잘 하는 여자라면 괜찮은데, 어중간한 쪽이면 이건 봉이구나 하고 생각하는 경향이 있거든요. 어느 헬스장이든 한달은 다녀야 이런 시선과 영업에서 자유로워질 수 있어요. 그런데 자유로워지지 못하는 게 있어요. 복장이요. 전 솔직히 관종 기질은 있어요. 인정해요. 예쁜 레깅스 입고, 몸 좋을 땐 나시도 입고 누가 쳐다보면 아 오늘 괜찮나 보다 그렇게 생각은 해요. 그런데 가끔, 이게 정도가 과한 사람들이 있어요. 그리고 그러다 보면 아주머니들도 한두마디씩 뭐라고 하기 시작하거든요. 결국 무지개색 레깅스들이 하나씩 옷장으로 들어가요. 그러다 보면 옷이 있는데도 못 입기 시작하죠. 몸이 좀만 안좋아져도, 사람들이 욕할까 봐 더 피하게 되고요. 그런데 크로스핏 박스는 상대적으로 이런 데에서 훨씬 자유로워요. 헬스장 웨이트 존은요, 아무리 운동하는 여자가 많이 늘어났어도 거기 남자들만의 영역이라는 느낌이 정말 강해요. 누구 말마따나 가슴골 보이는 나시에, 우락부락 이두와 삼두에, 무게 양쪽에 끼고 괴성을 지르며 운동하는 남자들 사이에 끼는 거, 저 하고 싶은 건 다 하고 사는 사람인데도 부담스러울 때가 많거든요. 그런데 크로스핏 박스는 일단 여자들이 많아요. 성비가 괜찮은 박스는 5:5인 경우도 많죠. 게다가 운동 좋아하는 여자들이 모였으니, 온갖 색깔 레깅스에 예쁜 나시에 좀 야해 보이는 옷도 다들 잘 입거든요. 남들 다 입다 보니 제가 좀 튀게 입어도 별 말도 안나오고, 저도 마음이 편하고, 운동 끝나고 같이 사진도 찍고 커피도 마시고 그러면 편안하거든요. 더구나 드랍도 되고, 바벨도 많고, 무슨 운동을 할 때 기다리지 않아도 돼서 좋아요. 사실 칠판에 이름 적고 자기소개 시키고 이런 걸 부담스러워 하는 사람들한테는 별로인 거 같은데. 저는 일 년을 다녀도 인사 한번 안 하게 되는 헬스장 분위기가 더 적응하기 어려웠거든요. 눈이 마주친다, 피한다로 알아서 적응해야 하는 분위기가 어려웠는데. 일단 말 트고 친해지니까, 아는 사람들이랑 운동한다는 기분이 들더라고요. 물론 단점도 있죠. 가격이요. 보통 이십만원에서 이십오만원 사이니까 이게 싸지도 않고요. 부상 위험 같은 건 언제나 있지만, 솔직히 이건 자기가 컨트롤을 잘 하면 되는 문제거든요. 안 그런 박스도 많지만 잘 찾아보면 부상 관리를 꼼꼼하게 해 주는 박스도 있어요. 크로스핏은 확실히, 괜찮은 박스를 잘 찾아봐야 한다는 어려움이 있기는 하네요. 무리한 동작을 시킨다는 말이 있는데, 기본적으로 안 되는 동작은 수정을 다 해주니까, 사실은 큰 문제가 되진 않거든요. 실은 이 글을, 여자들은 sns하려고 크로스핏 한다고 하길래 왠지 욱하는 기분에 썼거든요. sns로 자랑하고 싶은 마음이 드는 것도 사실인데, 인스타그램에 헬스라고 한번 쳐 보세요. 여자들 레깅스 사진만큼 많은 게 팬티만 입고 이두박근, 삼두박근 얍! 복근 야압! 하는 사진일걸요. 몸 만들면 자랑하고 싶은 건 당연하죠. 근데 그게 여자라서, 크로스핏이라서, 더 많은 것 같지는 않아요. 그냥 운동하는 사람들은 남자나 여자나 자랑질이 디폴트예요. 내 근육을 봐라나 내 레깅스를 봐라나, 내가 무게 이만큼 쳤다나, 나 이렇게 운동 잘한다나 뭐, 크게 다른 욕구겠어요. 말이 길어졌지만, 그래서 전 여성 전용 존이라던지 생기는 것도 나쁘지 않다고 생각해요. 일단 접근성이라도 높아져야, 가뜩이나 좁은 프리웨이트 존이 조금이라도 넓어지지 않겠어요? 안 그래요? 하하.
