 김금희 / 경애의 마음 스포 있습니다. 경애는 대학에서 남자친구가 생겨요. 교재를 단체로 구입할 일이 있어서 과에서 돈을 걷었다가 돌려주었는데 착오가 생겨서 산주라는 남학생의 계좌에 경애 돈까지 입금된거예요. 조교는 산주 전화번호 알려주면서 경애한테 너가 알아서 받으래요 ; 전화 걸어보니까 '고객의 사정으로 정지되었습니다' ㅡㅡ^ 학부생이 삼백명이 넘는데 누가 산주인지 어케알어.. 강의 끝나고 과대한테 가서 물어보니까 과대가 형, 하고 부르네요. 급하게 나가려던 산주가 왜 하고 돌아봅니다. 상황 설명하고 돈 달라니까 못준답니다? 통장에 돈이 없대요. 대출 이자로 나갔을거래요 -_-+ ㅅㅂ 아무리 그래도 76,000원 여윳돈이 없나요? 거짓말 같지는 않은데.. 산주는 지금 알바하러 가야한다면서 같이 걸으면서 얘기하쟤요. 가면서 얘기하는데 자기도 뭔가 두번 입급된거 같아서 빼놓으려고 했다가 타이밍을 놓쳤다고 미안하대요. 친구가 나가는 소켓공장에서 삼일동안 야간알바 하니까 그걸로 삼일후 목요일에 갚는대요. 목요일 -"- (삼일에 76,000원 버는거면 하루 일당이 얼마야..) 경애 표정을 보더니 산주가 그럼 밤에 일당 받는대로 바로바로 입금한대요. 알았다고 집에 와서 비디오 보고 있는데 밤에 문자가 와요. <박경애 학우님, 넣었습니다> 다음날 통장 확인해보니까 25,000원 입금되어 있어요. 그렇게 삼일이 지나는 동안 경애는 왠지 잠이 안와서 영화 킬빌을 여러번 돌려보면서 밤을 새요. 여주인공이 사람을 썰어나가며 복수하는거랑 공장에서 산주가 야간작업을 하는게 어째 비슷한 맥락인거처럼 느껴져요. 꾸벅꾸벅 졸다가 비디오가 탁 하고 멈추는 소리에 깨면 이상하게 허무해지고 세상일에 신물이 났어요. 그때 <오늘도 입금했어요>하고 오는 문자는 그 밤의 환멸을 몰아내고 뭔가 다른 감정을 일으켰어요 아침이 다가올 때 어쩔 수 없이 품게 되는 기대, 어제보다는 낫지 않겠어, 하고 식빵처럼 부푸는 마음.. 그러다가 그런거에 속아넘어갈까봐, 또다시 무언가를 바라고 실망할까봐 마음을 붙들어요. 산주가 76,000원을 다 입금했을 때 경애는 고민하다가 점심 같이 먹을래요? 문자를 보내요. 그래요, 하고 답이 옵니다. 사랑의 시작이었어요. 시작이 있으면 끝이 오죠. 막 끓기 시작한 전골을 앞에 두고 산주가 말해요. 다른 사람을 좋아하게 되었어. 왜, 왜 그런 일이 벌어졌지. 그렇게 되었어. 좋아하게 되었어. 내가 너를 우연히 좋아한 것처럼 그런 일은 그렇게 벌어졌어. 경애의 선배이기도 한 그 '다른 사람'과 산주는 결혼했어요. 식장에 가서 축의금 50만원을 냈어요. 오기였어요. 연단에서 기념사진을 찍고 식권을 받아 식당으로 가서 남들이 다 하는 표정과 몸짓으로 <끝>의 절차를 기꺼이 밟았어요. 접시에 육회와 초밥과 샐러드와 연어를 연신 담아 먹고 친구들과 맥주까지 한잔하고 혼자 집으로 가는 길에 동네 편의점에서 아이스크림을 먹었어요. 끝난건가. 대체 끝이라는게 뭐야. 사람들은 어떻게 끝이라는걸 실감하고 확신하지. 끝이 만져지나. 끝은 느끼는거고 상상하는거고 인식하는 거잖아. 내가 그렇지 않은데 어떻게 끝을 말해 ! 친구 미유는 그런 경애를 달래고 설득하려고 여러 비유를 들어요. 어린아이가 손에서 놓친 풍선을 허공에서 찾는 것, 당뇨 환자가 당분이 든 음식을 탐하는 것, 폐암 말기 환자가 금연하지 못하는 것, 칠첩반상 놔두고 불량식품 먹는것.. 경애는 그런 말들을 애정으로 받아들이고 미유가 만드는 소개팅 자리에 선선히 나가요. 대부분 괜찮은 사람들이에요. 이 남자들은 어디서 뭘 하며 괜찮게 있다가 내 앞에 나타났나 싶을 정도로. 전혀 알지도 못하던 사람들이 같은 시간 같은 공간에 있기 위해서는 아주 많은 행운이 작용해야 하죠. 태어나야 했고 자라야 했고 먹어야 했고 사고를 피해야 했고 견뎌야 했겠죠. 무엇보다 불운을 피할 수 있어야 했죠. 불운을 피한다는건 무엇이냐. 살아 있어야 했다는 거예요. 죽어서는 안된다는 거예요. 경애는 고등학생이었던 1999년 한 친구를 잃었어요. 하이텔 영화동호회 <모두의 영동>에서 만난 E라는 친구였어요. 어느날 모임이 끝나고 밥을 먹으러 가는 일행과 헤어져 전철역으로 걷다가 경애가 말을 걸었어요. 왜 저녁 먹으러 안 가? 너 저 사람들이 간다는 패밀리 레스토랑 얼마짜린지 알아? 전에 멋모르고 들어갔다가 음료수만 먹고 나왔어. 종업원이 무릎을 꿇고 주문을 받아. 둘은 가다가 우동을 사 먹었고 E의 독특한 영화관도 그때 들었어요. E는 사람과 사람이 만나듯 영화도 우연이 작동해야 한다고 믿었어요. 시퀀스가 어떻고 카메라 워킹이 어떻고 씬의 전환이 어떻고 무슨 무슨 주의들을 가지고 영화를 해석하고 그런게 아니라, 영화에서 중요한건 줄거리도 배우도 아니고 오직 그 자리에 앉아 있는 관객과 상영되는 영화 사이에 이는 그 순간의 시간이라고. 관객과 영화가 만나고 이미지가 주는 자극에 관객의 모든 것이 반응하면서 시간이 흐로고 이윽고 소멸되는 동안에 일어나는 감각의 에너지라고. 그래서 우리가 영화를 보고 나서 이렇다 저렇다 하는 건 결국 다 식어버린 잿더미 같다고, 영화를 좋아한다는 것의 무상함을 이야기했어요. E는 그렇게 무상하게, 아무런 비극의 복선과 전조도 없이, 호프집에서 일어난 화재사고로 경애의 곁을 떠나요. 경애는 그 자리에 함께 있었지만 잠시 공중전화를 쓰러 밖에 나와있다가 화를 면해요. 화재사고가 났던 날, 호프집에 가기 전에 E는 경애에게 자신이 촬영한 단편영화를 보여줘요. 영화속에는 어떤 남자아이가 등장해서 뭔가를 계속 떠들어대요. 남자아이는 E의 또다른 친구 상수입니다. 사고로부터 2년 뒤 2001년, 데이비드 린치가 '멀홀랜드 드라이브'라는 영화를 만들어요. E는 1999년에 이미 린치가 어머어마한 명작을 만들 거라고 말하고 다녔어요. 경애는 린치를 그렇게 열렬히 좋아한 E가 죽었는데 린치는 그것도 모르고 신작이나 발표하다니, 부당하다고는 생각이 들어요. 인천의 망해가는 예술영화관으로 멀홀랜드 드라이브를 보러 갑니다. 화재사고 이후 인천을 가는 건 처음이었어요. 예닐곱명밖에 없는 극장 안에서 기괴하고 현란한 화면이 연속되는 동안 경애가 앉은 줄에서 끄트머리에 앉은 남자가 훌쩍거리며 울고 있어요. 상수에요. E의 친구. 경애는 그가 누군지 아직 모르죠. 공상수. 반도미싱 영업3팀 팀장대리. 자기만의 방식으로 열심히 일하지만 고객이 되는 한국 공장주들에게 별로 인기가 없는 셀러리맨. 여자가 있는 술집에 가기를 거부하고 물품계약서를 가라로 작성하는 융통성을 발휘할 줄 모르고 중간관리자들에게 뒷돈을 챙겨주지 않고 자기가 짝사랑하는 옆 팀의 김유정 팀장이 거래를 성사시키기 위해 거래처 사장이 주선한 맞선자리에 나가자 거기에 난입해 파토를 내버리는 골치덩어리. 아버지가 국회의원을 지낸 정치인이고 회장의 재수학원 동기였기 때문에, 쉽게말해 낙하산이었기 때문에 짤리지는 않고 자리보전은 하고 있는 처지. 그 공상수가 나는 팀장인데 왜 팀원이 한명도 없냐면서 팀원 충원해달라고 떼를 쓴 결과 회의가 열리고 때마침 총무부에서 내보내고 싶은 직원이 있다고 해서 8년차 총무부 직원 박경애와 함께 일하게 됩니다. 언제나 주머니에 손을 넣고 다니면서 마주치면 고개만 까닥 숙이고 지나가는. 이중주차를 해놓으면 그게 어떤 간부의 차라도 전화해서 좀 빼주시죠, 하고 끊어버리는. 구조조정으로 부서이동과 해고가 있었을 때 파업 농성대에 끼어서 간부들을 꽤 오래 귀찮게 했던. 상수는 인사과에서 경애의 이력서 사본과 근무평가지를 받아와 살펴봐요. 자기소개서에 짧게 요약된 가정환경 소개, <대대로 어렵습니다. 효도하고 싶어요> 근무평가는 단 한번의 지각도 없었는데 C등급. 시뮬레이션으로 돌려본 조직개편안에서는 직급이 상향조정되어야 한다고 나와 있으나 결과적으로 승진이 없었던 이유로는 <인사적체> 그런 박경애를 팀원으로 받아들여 함게 일하지만 서로 붙임성이 좋지 않아 좀처럼 단합도 안되고 이래저래 일이 풀리지 않습니다. 그러던 어느날 부장에게 불려가 배트남으로 발령났다고 일방적으로 통보를 받아요. 무슨 만들어진지 두달도 안된 팀을 해외발령을 내냐, 이거 좌천이나 징계 아니냐, 라고 항의하다가 짝사랑 김유정팀장의 조언을 듣고 가보기로 합니다. 이건 찬스일 수도 있다. 너를 그곳으로 보내는건 사장이 그쪽 총판을 못믿어서일 것이다. 아버지에 이어서 부임하기는 했지만 회사를 완전히 장악하지는 못한 젊은 사장은 이사진들에게 <도련님>으로 은근히 무시당하고 있다. 나름 근성있고 판단력 있는 사장은 이 발령으로 회사의 권력구조를 재조정하려는 것일수 있다, 는 거였어요. 한편 박경애는 그시기에 결혼한 산주와 다시 만나고 있었어요. 만나면서도 이건 아니다 싶고 어디로든 떠나지 않으면 안되겠다 싶을 때 타이밍 좋게 배트남 발령이 난거죠. 해서, 둘은 배트남을 접수하러 떠납니다. 거리를 뒤덮는 오토바이가 있는 곳, 한국사람이 어떻게 BTS도 노래도 모르냐고 놀라는 노동자들이 있는 곳으로... 근데 게시물 제목이 왜 <언니는 죄가 없다> 냐구요? <언니는 죄가 없다>는 이 소설에서 상당히 중요한 비중을 차지하는, 공상수가 운영하는 연애상담 페이스북 페이지입니다. 김금희씨는 처음에 소설 제목을 이걸로 하려고 했었대요. 상수는 어린시절부터 아버지, 형, 학교의 또래 남학생들로부터 남자들의 이기적인 폭력성에 학을 떼어요. 특히 사랑에 있어서, 남자들에게 여자란 마치 성기와 가슴만 있는 존재처럼 여겨지는 것으로 보였고 그들의 시시덕거림에 상수는 내장기관 어딘가가 운동하는 듯한 메스꺼움을 느껴요. 남자의 사랑이란 누군가를 아끼고 위하는 것이기보다 권력관계에서 발생하는 피가학의 열정 같았어요. 상수는 팔로워가 이만명에 달하는 그 페이지에서 <언니>가 되어 사연을 받고 위로답장을 써줘요. 그 답장에서도 상수의 <메스꺼움>이 드러나는 내용이 드물지 않게 보입니다. <남자들은 성욕을 채우려면 어떤 사탕발림도 마다하지를 않아요, 아주 시를 쓰지요. 릴케가 따로 없어요> 같은... 하지만 그런 부정적인 면보다는 상처받은 사람들을 보듬기 위한 상수의 속 깊은 변호. 사랑의 무고함에 대한 변호, 마음의 죄 없음에 대한 변호가 아주 빛이 납니다. 그리고 중요한건데, 바로 경애가 산주와 이별한 후 이 <언죄다>에서 상담을 받게 됩니다. 반도미싱에서 한 팀으로 일하기 전에 이미 온라인상에서 소통을 했었던거죠. 물론 그 이전에 영화동호회에서 만난 E와의 인연으로 이어져 있었지만.. 친구의 친구의 친구, 익명의 온라인 연애상담, 회사동료로서의 갈등과 협력... 이 세가지 축이 절묘하게 엇갈리고 교차하면서 스토리가 전개되어 나갑니다. 소설가 김금희의 첫 장편소설입니다. 저는 객관적인 판단을 하기 힘들 정도로 매우 흥분되어 있습니다. 앞으로 이런 소설을 서너권 더 써준다고 하면, 거의 이십년 가까이 흔들림 없이 지켜지고 있었던 저의 최애 한국 소설가 자리는 이문열에서 김금희로 넘어갈겁니다. 누가 한국 소설 재미없어, 하고 말하면, 김금희 경애의 마음 읽어보고 말해, 라고 받아칠겁니다. 매년 노벨문학상이 화제가 될 때, 노벨문학상같은거 수상 못해도 괜찮아, 한국에는 김금희가 있으니까. 라고 생각할겁니다. 여러모로 엄지손가락을 치켜세울 수밖에 없는 소설인데 제가 첫번째로 감탄한건 문장이었어요. 개인적으로 가장 이상적으로 생각하고 실제로 구현하려고 노력하는 형태의 문장이거든요. 마치 타임라인 3~40대 언니들의 나긋하고 포근한 썰풀이 같기도 하고, 20대 초반 홍차의 아들딸들이 보여주는 힘차고 재기발랄한 지저귐 같기도 하고, 그러면서도 간혹 인생 몇회차인지 가늠이 안되는 노련함도 보이는.. 특히 좋았던건 대화의 현장감이었어요. 이건 문장이라고 하긴 좀 그런가 아무튼.. 예를들면 이런거에요. [경애는 그때 그 노래가 별로여서 웃은게 아니었다. 한다정을 곤란에서 구해주고 싶었을 뿐이었다. 한다정은 엄마가 된지 얼마 되지 않았다는걸 알고 있었다. 엄마는 그러면 안될 것 같았다. 누구도 새해 첫날 망신을 당해서는 안되지만, 특히 엄마라면. "그러니까 일종의 웃음 투쟁을 한 거였군요." 경애의 파업 전력을 알고 있는걸 드러내려는 건지 시비를 거는 건지 모를 대답이었다. "있잖아요. 비꼬시는 거예요?" "아닙니다." "그런 것 같은데." "박경애 씨, 저기, 사람 말을 좀 잘 들읍시다. 원래 그렇게 삐딱합니까?" "삐딱한 거 아닌데요." "아니, 나는 옛날부터 기억이 있다, 박경애 씨에 대해서 이런저런, 그런 말을 하고 있잖습니까." "저도 그게 그게 아니다, 이렇게 얘기하고 있는거잖아요." "좀 친해집시다." "네, 친해지세요."] 음.. 어째 적어놓고 보니 느낌이 안사네요.. 맥락 없이 발췌해서 그런가.. 서서히 열이 받으면서 언성 높아지는 그 현장이 생생히 전달되는 것 같았거든요. 두번째는 직장생활에 대한 디테일한 묘사에요. 그것도 미싱이라는 사양산업을 그렇게 자세하고 재미있게 러브스토리랑 엮어내다니.. 소설의 출발이 궁금하다는 인터뷰 질문에 대한 김금희씨의 답변입니다. [3년 전인가 4년 전인가, ‘미싱(mishin)’이란 단어가 머신(machine)에서 왔다는 이야기를 들었어요. 한국에선 사양 산업으로 저물고 있지만, 미싱이 기계를 대표하는 존재였다는 사실이 꽤 인상적이었어요. 마산에서 일했던 친척들도 생각났고, 여전히 그곳에서 일하고 있을 젊은 사람들이 궁금해졌어요. 사양 산업으로 치부되는 그 곳에서 일하는 사람의 특징은 무얼까 고민하다가, 연재 제의를 받고 본격적으로 쓰기 시작했죠.] 세번째는 둘간의 애매한 감정이 주는 긴장감이었어요. 눈 딱 맞아서 알콩달콩 난리 나는게 아니라, 무덤덤하게 자기 일 하면서 이 둘은 그런거 아닌가봐, 러브라인 아닌가봐, 싶으면서도, 결정적인 순간에는 시간이 정지된 듯하면서 그 순간이 영원인거 같은, 그래서 페이지를 넘기지 못하고 고요해지는 그런 장면들이 좋았어요. 네번째는 어.. 뭐라고 말해야 하나. 이거 되게 현실적인 소설이거든요. 근데 현실 위의 어딘가를 가리키고 바라보고 있어요. 비교하기 좀 미안한데, 몇개월 전에 정이현의 달콤한 나의 도시를 재미있게 읽었었어요. 잘 썼어요. 재미있었어요. 결혼적령기에 이른 한 여성이 몇명의 남자들을 요리 비교해보고 조리 비교해보고, 등장하는 여자들도 남자들도 전부 너무 솔직하게 세속적이고 속물적인데 그 솔직함이 귀엽고 좋았어요. 맞아 정말 이렇지 ㅋㅋㅋ 나도 그래, 하고 공감이 갔었어요. 절대 거기에 대해 뭐라 하고 싶은게 아니라, 그래도 뭔가 허전했어요. 이게 다야? 우리가 사는건 정말 이런거야? 저는 현실에서도 그게 다는 아니라고 생각하고, 특히 소설에서는 더더욱 그게 다여서는 안된다고 생각해요. 소설에서는 뭔가 그거 말고 다른게 있어야 되는데, 경애의 마음에 그게 있었어요. 있었는데요, 있었어요.
