 구체가 떠오르고 있었다. 아니, 구체화 된 나체의 사람… 삼촌이었다. 삼촌의 배가 수백 배로 팽창해 구체의 형태를 띠고 있었고 구체의 밑 부분에는 비정상적으로 가느다란 팔과 다리가 달려있었는데 역방향으로 은주 씨를 감싸고 있었다. 그렇게 구체화한 삼촌은 중력에서 벗어나 점점 빠른 속도로 하늘로 치솟아 올라가고 있었다. 난 망설일 시간조차 갖지 못한 채 창문에서 삼촌의 배 위로 뛰어내렸다. 기괴한 비명소리가 울려 퍼졌다. “끄으으… 내려라 이 쓸모없는 녀석! 너 같은 쓰레기는 필요 없다! 내려! 저리 꺼지란 말이다! 내려! 내려!” “도대체 뭘 어떻게 하려고 그러시는 거예요 삼촌! 지금 제정신이세요? 그 끔찍한 모습은 대체…” “이미 다 설명했을 텐데! 모든 건 저 거대한 별과 소통하기 위해서다! 더욱 많은 목성석이 필요해 도움을 요청했건만 거들떠보지도 않던 쓰레기 놈이! 민수가 모든 걸 희생했다! 아주 고귀한 희생이지. 인류 역사상 처음으로 우주와의 소통이 이루어지는 위대한 업적이 코앞이다! 저리 꺼져! 저 별이 원하는 건 이 여자뿐이야!” 삼촌은 몸을 뒤집어 나를 떨어뜨리려 했지만 그럴수록 나는 삼촌의 살가죽을 쥐어 잡으며 악착같이 매달렸다. 오히려 삼촌이 몸을 뒤집는 바람에 은주가 위로 올라갔고 나는 아래에 매달리게 됐는데 살가죽을 잡고 위로 올라갈 수 있었다. 팔의 근육들이 경련하며 덜덜 떨렸지만 위로 올라갈 수 있었고 삼촌의 팔과 다리가 은주를 붙잡고 있는 곳까지 갈 수 있었다. 하지만 거기서 더 할 수 있는 일이 없었다. 실랑이를 벌이는 동안 점점 우리는 지상에서 멀어졌고 밑을 바라보는 것만으로도 아찔함을 느낄 수 있었다. 지상의 빛이 점점 사라지고 우주의 어둠이 다가왔다. “그으으윽…! 이대로는 안 돼…!” 삼촌의 배는 점점 더 부풀어 오르더니 은주를 감싸고 있던 팔과 다리가 등 속으로 파고들어 갔고 바짝 붙어있던 나도 함께 빨려 들어갔다. 살 속에 파묻혔다고 생각한 순간 공간이 확장되었다. 삼촌의 몸 속이라고밖에 생각할 수 없는 공간이었는데 작은 방 하나의 크기에 그저 탁한 암회색의 벽으로 사방이 막힌 곳이었다. 분명 몸속으로 들어왔는데 어떻게 이런 공간이 있는 걸까. 옆에는 은주가 쓰러져 있었다. 다행히 숨을 쉬고 있었고 의식을 잃은 것처럼 보였다. 아무런 변화도 일어나지 않는 공간에서는 많은 감각이 상실된다. 시간이 얼마나 흘렀을지, 얼마나 멀리 이동했는지 알 수 없지만 은주가 깨어났다. 그녀는 잠자는 도중에 받은 갑작스러운 습격으로 정신을 잃었던 탓에 매우 혼란스러워했지만 내 설명과 시간의 흐름 덕에 점차 안정을 되찾았다. 크게 다친 곳은 없었고 우리는 현재 우리가 처한 상황에 대해 이해하려 애썼다. “그러니까 풍선처럼 거대하게 부풀어 오른 소장님의 몸속으로 파묻혔는데, 이 암회색 벽으로 막힌 방이었다는 거야? 말이 안 된다는 얘기는 너무 식상하겠지만, 믿을 수가 없네.” 은주는 당황하며 말했다. 물론 내가 은주의 입장이었어도 마찬가지로 반응했겠지. “나도 충분히 이해해. 이렇게 말하는 나도 믿기지 않으니까. 목성석의 힘으로 초자연적인 변화나, 현상이 일어난 거 같아. 그보다 중요한 건 앞으로 어떤 일이 일어날지, 어떻게 대처할 것인지 같아. 분명 마지막에 우리는 하늘로 떠올라서 계속해서 상승하고 있었어.” “그리고 소장님은 언제나 그렇듯 목성 이야기만 계속하셨고. 우리가 목성을 향해 가고 있다고 생각하는 게 무리는 아닌 것 같아. 문제는 얼마나 오랜 시간이 걸리느냐, 그리고 목성에 도착하면 무슨 일이 일어나느냐인 것 같네.” 그랬다. 지구에서 목성까지는 직선거리로 측정해도 수억 킬로미터나 된다. 삼촌의 몸이 어떤 식으로 이동하는지는 모르지만, 목성을 목표로 발사된 탐사선은 직선거리로 날아가지 않고 태양의 인력과 지구, 목성의 공전궤도를 고려해서 더 멀리 돌아가기 때문에 수십억 킬로미터의 거리를 수년에 걸쳐서 날아간다. 이 아무것도 없는 작은 공간에서 물과 음식 없이 얼마나 버틸 수 있을까? 허기와 탈수증상 속에 맞이하는 비참한 최후가 자꾸만 떠올랐다. 은주 역시 직감적으로 그런 결과를 떠올렸는지 표정이 좋지 않았다. 우린 비참한 표정을 지으며 서로에게 기댄 채 고개를 숙였다. 아무런 변화도 희망도 생길 수 없는 거대한 절망이 숨을 조여왔다. 그렇게 얼마의 시간이 흘렀을까? 멍하니 벽을 바라보던 나는 눈이 번쩍 뜨였다. 벽이 변하고 있었다. “은주야. 벽이 변하고 있어! 검게 물들어가고 있다고! 은주는 화들짝 놀라며 고개를 들어 벽을 바라보았다. “아니야, 이건 밖의 풍경을 보여주는 것 같아. 저기 문제의 그 행성이 모습을 드러내고 있어.” 벽의 한 부분에 작은 주황색 무늬가 보이더니 점차 주변으로 퍼져나갔다. 계속해서 뻗어 나가던 무늬는 이내 완벽한 원의 형태를 완성했고 한없이 깊고 검은 허무의 공간 속에서 병변으로 일그러진 망자의 피부처럼 기이한 암회색과 탁한 주황색이 뒤섞인 거대한 행성이 보였다. 그 거대함에, 살아 움직이는 듯한 기이한 소용돌이와 연기처럼 일렁이며 퍼져나가는 무늬, 세포의 단면처럼 보이는 미세한 점들에 나는 압도당했다. 마치 살아있는 생명체처럼 쉴새 없이 변화하는 그 모습은 내 시선을 포함해 영혼까지도 빨아들이는 흡입력을 가지고 있었다. 미치광이 화가의 초현실적 그림을 보는듯 했다. “어떻게.. 벌써 도착한 거지? 이 공간에서의 시간 감각이 아무리 둔하다고 해도 우린 몇 시간 밖에 있지 않았어.” 당황해서 말하는 은주의 목소리는 떨리고 있었다. “지금 우리가 겪은 일들을 생각해 보면 말이 되는 이야기는 하나도 없어. 우린 이미 초월적인 사건의 흐름 속에 떠내려가고 있어. 더 이상 피하려고 해도 소용없을 것 같아. 그저… 무슨 일이 벌어지는지 바라보자.” “…쓸데없이 침착하네. 그래. 달리 뾰족한 수가 없네.” 벽 밖으로 보이는 점차 목성이 거대해지고 있었다. 삼촌이 목성에 접근하고 있는 것이리라. 아니, 목성이 우리를 빨아들이고 있는 거겠지. 점점 가까워지던 무늬는 이내 커다란 구름과 태풍의 모습으로 보였고 모든 걸 집어삼킬듯한 거센 폭풍과 시야 전체를 백화시킬 정도로 거대한 번개가 수시로 내려쳤다. 하지만 그 어떤 것도 보이기만 할 뿐 실제로 나와 은주에게 영향일 미치는 것은 아무것도 없었다. 그렇지 않고서야 진작에 목성이 뿜어내는 어마어마한 양의 방사선에 온몸의 세포가 녹아내렸을 테니까. 우리를 감싸고 있는, 아니 우리를 집어삼킨 삼촌은 지금 어떤 상태일까? 내부에 있는 우리가 멀쩡한 걸 보면 아무래도 삼촌은 인간이 아닌 무언가로 바뀐 모양이다. 구름층을 지나자 숨 막히는 고요와 함께 자욱한 안개가 사방을 감쌌다. 지독한 정적과 함께 변화하지 않는 정지의 순간이 찾아왔고 시간의 흐름과 사고마저 멈춘 것 같았다. 그 정적을 깨기 위해 고개를 돌려 은주를 바라보았다. 잠시 후 은주도 고개를 돌려 나를 바라보았다. 혼란과 두려움, 슬픔과 긴장이 뒤섞인 표정이었다. 나는 말 없이 떨리는 손을 잡았다. 부드러운 피부에서 차가운 감촉이 신경을 자극했다. 그 느낌만이 이 지독한 정적에서 내가 존재하고 살아있음을 일깨워주었다. 다시 정신을 차리고 벽을 바라보자 자욱한 안개가 점점 옅어지고 일렁이는 수면이 다가왔다. 엄청난 압력으로 액화된 수소의 바다. 바닷속으로 들어갈수록 주변의 빛이 사라졌고 점점 어둠이 짙어졌다. 다시 검게 물든 벽. 한 치 앞도 보이지 않은 완벽한 어둠이 나를 감쌌다. 갑자기 혼자가 된 기분이 들어 두려웠다. 하지만 손에서 느껴지는 피부의 촉감이 은주가 여전히 내 옆에 있음을 일깨워줬다. 과학자들의 추측이 맞다면 깊고 깊은 수소의 바다 속 끝에는 고체화된 수소로 이루어진 핵이 있을 것이다. 그곳에 도착하면 이 불가능한 일들이 어떻게 벌어진 건지 알 수 있을까? 도대체 이 거대한 행성은 어떤 의지를 가지고 삼촌에게 목성석을 보낸 걸까. 행성이라는 거대한 존재는 생명체가 아니다. 무생물은 그저 존재할 뿐 어떤 의지도 가지고 있지 않다. 분명, 목성은 거대한 행성이고 어마어마한 에너지를 가지고 있다. 모든 생명체를 죽이는 강력한 방사선과 주변의 모든 사물을 끌어당기는 중력도 가지고 있다. 하지만 그저 물리법칙에 따라 정해진 규칙대로 움직일 뿐, 생명체처럼 중력에 반해서 하늘로 날아오르려 한다거나 죽음도 불사하고 목표를 수행한다거나 하는 의지를 가질 수 없다. 삼촌은 왜 목성이 의지를 가지고 있다고 한 걸까? 분명 엄청난 거리에 떨어져 있는 우리에게 막강한 영향력을 행사하긴 했지만… 어떤 의지라기보다 그저 특수한, 아주 특수한 하나의 규칙은 아니었을까? 계속해서 여러 가지 의문이 들었다. 생각에 잠겨 검은 수소의 바다 속을 바라보고 있으니 분명 어둠뿐인 그 심연 속에서 알 수 없는 움직임이 느껴졌다. 짙은 어둠 속에서도 무언가가 움직이고 있다는 묘한 느낌. 액체 수소 속에서도 생존하는 생물이 있을까? 지금까지의 상식 안에선 없었다. 하지만 성인 남성의 몸속에 탑승한 채 지구에서 목성까지 온 마당에 상식을 신뢰하기는 어려웠다. 지독한 상상력이 계속해서 악몽 같은 존재들을 만들어 검은 바다 속에 풀어놓았다. 그러나 실제로 나에게 영향을 미치는 존재는 없었고 그렇게 나는 계속해서 아래로 내려갔다. 그렇게 얼마의 시간이 흘렀을까? 중간에 잠시 잠들었는지도 모르겠다. 짙은 어둠 속에서 서서히 빛이 보이기 시작했다. 발밑에서부터 올라오는 빛은 스스로 발광하는 게 아니라 마치 검은 가죽에 비치는 반사광 같은 느낌이었다. 희미한 빛이었지만 칠흑 같은 어둠 안의 유일한 빛이었기에 뚜렷하게 보였다. 점점 그 빛을 반사해내는 그것에 가까워질수록 깊은 상실감과 외로움, 고독함, 우울함 등 온갖 부정적인 감정이 폭발하듯 올라왔다. 저 빛은 사람을 미치게 만드는 게 분명하다. 목성석에서 들려오던 기이한 울림소리가 다시 들리기 시작했다. 거대한 금속 파이프 안에서 들려오는 금속의 진동음과 바람소리가 뒤섞인듯한 그 소리! 난 고통스러워하며 은주를 바라보았다. 검은 반사광에 비친 은주의 얼굴은 지금까지 봤던 그 어떤 모습과도 달랐다. 어둠 속에서 겨우 그 존재만을 나타낼 수 있는 극소량의 빛이었기에 은주는 어둠과 거의 하나인 모습이었다. 그리고 말했다. 결코, 인간의 것이라 할 수 없는 목소리로 말했다. 그것은 말이 아니었다. 소리의 형태를 가지고 있지만, 단어를 발음해서 의미를 전달하지 않았다. 목성석이 내던 소리와 비슷한 그 소리는 그저, 의미를 전달했다. 그것은 혼자다. 혼자이지 않기 위해 자신이 아닌 것을 원한다. 그러나 그 무엇도 그것을 혼자이지 않게 하지 않는다. 자신이 아닌 어떤 것을 가져와도 그것은 변화할지언정 혼자다. 혼자이지 않고 싶으나 혼자일 수밖에 없다. 혼자 혼자인 것보다는 혼자가 아닌 것들도 혼자길 원한다. 존재하는 모든 것의 완벽한 고립. 온몸의 신경에 사무치도록 시린 고독함과 짙은 공허함이 나를 감쌌다. 나는 은주의 손을 놓아버렸다. 그리고 목성 그 자체를 향해 걸어갔다. 밖으로부터 우릴 감싸왔던 투명한 벽을 지나 삼촌의 밖으로 나와 목성을 향해 걸어갔다. 그리고 그 거대한 고립의 의지를 온몸으로 받아들였다. 태어나고 살아가며 함께 했던 사람들과의 기억과 관계, 감정의 공유와 공감이 사라져갔다. 나는 지독히도 혼자가 되었다. 어둠뿐인 이 공간에서 더는 나를 기쁘게 혹은 슬프게, 분노하거나 사랑 또는 두려워하게, 시기하거나 동경하게 만드는 타인은 존재하지 않았다. 감정의 변화는 멈추고 고요하디고요한 침묵만이 가득했다. 그리고 서서히 나라는 존재에 대한 인식이 희미해졌다. 내가 아닌 것을 변화시키기에 내가 영향력을 가지고 있고 존재함을 느꼈는데 아무런 것도 변화시키지 못하고 느끼지 못하는 내가 정말로 존재하는 것일까? 자신의 존재를 느끼지 못하는 그저 사라지고 싶었다. 이대로 소멸하여 존재하지 않는 상태가 되고 싶었다. 스스로 느끼는 소멸의 욕구를 받아들이고 무의 존재로 돌아가려는 순간 차가운 감촉이 느껴졌다. 등에서 느껴지던 그 감촉은 확실한 존재감을 전달했다. 내가 아닌 타인의 손길. 차가울지언정 그 감촉은 분명 내가 혼자가 아님을 인식시켰다. 시야가 바뀌었다. 사람의 얼굴이 보였다. 슬퍼하는 표정. 은주의 얼굴이 보였다. 나는 그녀를 감싸 안았다. 그리고 강력한 의지를 소망했다. 그저 이곳을 떠나 돌아가고 싶었다. 검은 반사광을 비추던 존재가 멀어지고 심연의 어둠 같던 바다를 지나 짙은 안개를 통과하고 시야를 온통 백화시키던 거대한 번개의 숲을 지나 수 없는 별들의 반짝임을 받으며 우주 공간을 나아가기를 한 참. 온기가 느껴졌다. 눈을 뜨자 따스한 빛이 시야를 가득 채웠다. 호수의 물이 지면에 부딪혀 찰박이는 소리가 귀를 간지럽혔다. 은주와 나는 관측소 옆 호수에 있었다. 은주는 정신을 잃은 듯 쓰러져 있었다. 그녀를 깨워 관측소 숙소로 돌아온 우리는 그동안 경험했던 일들을 얘기하며 이해하려 애썼다. 하지만 어떤 일들은 이해할 수 없고 흉터처럼 그저 기억에 남을 뿐이다. 우리는 이해를 포기하고 앞을 바라보기로 했다. 소장님과 민수 씨 두 사람의 실종을 경찰에 신고하고 조사를 받으며 그동안 있었던 일을 설명했지만 아무도 믿지 않았다. 나와 은주가 용의 선상에 오르기도 했지만 아무런 증거가 없었기에 풀려났다. 이 사건은 언론의 관심을 받았고 나와 은주는 방송국에서 시사 교양 프로에 출연 제의를 받아 촬영을 진행했다. 우리가 겪은 일에 대해서 수많은 전문가들과 사람들이 관심을 가지고 진위를 가리며 갑론을박을 펼쳤지만 금세 시들었다. 일련의 사건을 겪으며 서로에게 마음을 열고 가까워진 나와 은주는 연인 사이가 되었고 이듬해 여름에 결혼까지 했다. 나는 목성에서 겪은 일을 글로 써서 방송에서 미처 표현하지 못했던 세세한 내용을 담아 책을 냈고 순식간에 팔려나가 베스트 셀러에 올랐다. 덕분에 생활은 풍족해졌고 은주는 디저트 카페를 차려 안정적인 매출을 올렸다. 나는 베스트 셀러 작가라는 타이틀과 다른 누구도 경험해 보지 못한 일들에서 받은 영감을 가지고 계속해서 글을 썼고 제법 잘 나가는 작가가 되었다. 그렇게 따스한 날들이 계속됐다. 그리고 계속해서 이어질 것 같았다. 그러나 그런 기대는 비정기적으로 꾸는 악몽 때문에 훼손되곤 했다. 그 악몽은 단순했다. 그저 새까만 암흑 속에서 목성의 소리가 반복해서 들리는 꿈이었다. 다른 행복한 일들로 인해 견고해진 내 인생의 탑은 이 단순한 악몽을 꿀 때마다 조금씩 균열이 갔지만 심각하게 느끼진 않았다. 그저 트라우마일 거라 여겼다. 하지만 목성에서의 경험이 결코 허구가 아니며 명백히 내가 겪었던 현실임을 상기시켰고 이해할 수 없기에 그냥 넘기려 했던 의문들, 예를 들면 삼촌의 기괴하게 변이한 일이라거나 내가 목성의 검은 존재에 이끌려서 잠시 모든 존재로부터 고립되고 자신의 존재감을 잃은 채 소멸의 길로, 무의 존재를 향해 갔던 일 같은 것들이 기억의 무덤 속을 뚫고 올라왔다. 나는 그 일이 있고 나서 의식적으로 밤하늘을 잘 바라보지 않는다. 굳이 그 별이 분명히 존재하고 있다는 사실을 받아들이고 싶지 않았다. 하지만 악몽 속의 생생한 목소리마저 무시할 수는 없었다. 그 존재는 계속해서 나에게 목소리를 들려주고 있다. 검은 밤하늘 너머에서 나를 노려보고 있다. 시야에 들어오는 하늘 전체를 꽉 채우고도 남을 정도로 거대한 존재가 뿜어내는 존재감은 무시할 수 없다. 점점 하늘이 낮아지는 것만 같다. 무시무시한 중압감이 날 짓누른다. 은주는 겁에 질려가는 내 모습을 보고 걱정했지만 뚜렷한 해결책이 없었다. 지금 내가 느끼고 있는 이 공포는 그 실체를 알 수 없는 미지의 존재에 대한 공포였기 때문이다. 알지 못하는 것에 대비할 수는 없다. 나는 점차 외출을 피하기 시작했다. 하지만 그 존재는 내 꿈을 통해서 자꾸만 접근해왔다. 극단적인 선택으로 잠자는 시간을 대폭 줄였지만 아주 잠깐의 졸음만으로도 그 존재와의 통로는 순식간에 연결됐다. 부족한 잠과 공포심으로 인해 내 심신은 하루하루 피폐해졌다. 과도한 양의 각성제를 복용하고 잠을 안 잔지 47시간이 넘은 지금, 내 정신은 이루 말할 수 없이 혼란스러웠다. 현실과 상상의 경계가 모호해진다. 아아… 다시 그 존재가 보인다. 사방이 어둠 뿐이다. 가만.. 지금 이게 현실일까 꿈일까?
