별로 읽는 사람 없을 지면에 서평을 실어야 해서 마구 두들겨 보았습니다. 많이 다듬고 무엇보다 팩트 체크를 해야 하지만 아무튼... 현재 진행 중인 사안까지 엮어 써 보았네요. 1. 가와카미 미에코의 소설 『헤븐』(김춘미 옮김, 비채, 2011)의 주인공 ‘나’는 학교에서 사시를 빌미로 한 괴롭힘에 시달린다. 그러던 ‘나’는 잘 씻지 않아서 더럽고 냄새가 난다는 이유로 마찬가지로 괴롭힘을 당하던 고지마와 우정을 쌓게 된다. 고지마는 자신이 잘 씻지 않는 이유는 그것이 어머니와 이혼하고 집을 나간 아버지를 기억하는 자기만의 방식이자 징표이기 때문이라고 말한다. 그리고 ‘나’에게도 사시를 교정하지 말라고, 그것을 너의 고유성을 입증하는 징표로서 받아들이라고 말한다. 둘은 더욱 지독한 괴롭힘을 당하게 된다. ‘나’는 괴롭힘을 주동하던 아이 중 하나인 모모세로부터 ‘꼭 네가 사시라서 괴롭히는 게 아니라 누군가를 장난감으로 삼고 싶은데 마침 사시라는 잘 드러나는 표식이 눈에 띈 너를 선택했을 뿐’이라는 말을 듣게 된다. 사시와 괴롭힘 사이에 명확한 인과는 존재하지 않는다. 따라서 사시는 ‘나’의 고유성의 표식이 될 수 없다. ‘나’는 결국 사시 교정 수술을 받기로 하고, 고지마에게 절교당한다. 소설은 교정된 시야로 처음으로 초점이 맞는 세계의 상을 마주한 ‘나’의 감탄과 탄식으로 끝난다. 그것은 이를테면 ‘이토록 아름답고 명백하고 완전한 세계(감탄)를 보고 있었으면서 어떻게 그토록 부조리하고 악의에 찬 행동을 할 수 있느냐(탄식)’는 의미를 담은 표현이었다고 할 수 있을 듯하다. 2. 한편 이 글은 『헤븐』이라는 작품에 대한 것은 아니다. 나는 에롤 모리스의 『코끼리가 숨어 있다: 사진이 드러내고 감추는 것』(권혁, 김일선 옮김, 돋을새김, 2016)이라는 논픽션 에세이에 대한 이야기를 해 보려 한다. 에롤 모리스는 항상 주어진 현상을 의심하고 감춰진 맥락을 끈덕지게 추적하는 자신의 습관을 (다소 유머러스하게) 설명하기 위해 사시라는 자신의 신체적 특징을 끌어온다. 시각의 불완전성을 예민하게 자각하기 때문에 보이는 것, 보여진 것을 그대로 믿지 않는 습관을 붙이게 되었다는 것이다. 사실 우리 모두의 시각은 불완전하다. 정상적 시각을 가진 사람도 매 순간 자그마한 환각을 보고 있다. 맹점이 그것이다. 원래라면 두 눈에 수용된 시각 정보 안에 포함되어 있지 않을 맹점의 영역은 뇌 기능에 의해 보완되어 빈틈없는 시야를 완성한다. 보이지 않는 것을 보게 되는 것이다. 에롤 모리스의 경우, 사시라는 신체적 특성이 시각 일반의 불완정성을 이와 같은 환각으로 봉합할 수 없게 만들었다. (사시라는) 불완전성을 통해 (시각 일반의) 불완전성을 지각하게 되는 것이다. 이 책의 원제는 "Believing is Seeing"이다. 유명한 관용구 “Seeing is Believing”을 뒤집은 것이다. 보면 믿게(알게) 되는 것이 아니라 믿는 것을 보게 된다는 메시지가 담겨 있다. ‘이걸 봐, 이걸 보고도 못 믿겠어? 이걸로 얘긴 끝난 거야. 여전히 의심을 품다니 넌 이미 네 입장을 정해 놓고 현실을 부정하는 셈이야.’ 요즘 횡행하는 ‘사이다’, ‘인실좆’, ‘빼박캔트’, ‘반박불가’, ‘인증’, ‘한 줄 요약’ 서사의 마침표는 흔히 어떤 캡처 이미지로 찍히곤 한다. (참, 한글판의 제목도 책 내용에서 이탈한 것은 아니다. 사진 이미지가 아무리 명백한 사실을 전달하고 있는 것처럼 보여도, 언제나 그 프레임 바깥으로 거대한 코끼리가 숨어 있을 수 있다는 것이다.) 탐사 다큐멘터리 감독으로 명성이 높은 에롤 모리스는 이 책에서 네 가지 케이스를 다룬다. 그 첫째 케이스는 전쟁 사진의 고전 <죽음의 그림자 계곡>(로저 펜튼)이다. 19세기 크림 전쟁의 현장을 생생히 담아 낸 것으로 알려진 이 사진은 그러나 후대에 많은 논란을 낳게 된다. 가장 대표적인 것이 수전 손택의 지적이다. 펜튼은 같은 장소에서 두 컷의 사진을 촬영했는데, 한 사진에서는 도로에 포탄들이 널려 있고, 다른 한 사진에서는 포탄들이 길에서 사라져 있고 도랑에 모여 있다. 손택은 펜튼이 더 자기 입맛에 맞는 사진을 얻기 위해 현장을 ‘연출’했다는 비판을 가한다. 즉 전장을 있는 그대로 전달하지 않고 수용자들을 기만했기 때문에 펜튼은 가짜 개척자라는 것이다. 신화적 인물과 그의 작품에 망설임 없이 비판의 칼날을 휘두르는 손택의 모습에 많은 사람들이 환호했다. 세속화된 세계에서 성상 파괴자의 주가는 높다. 에롤 모리스는 손택의 판단에 의구심을 품는다. 손택의 문장에는 둘 중 한 사진이 연출되었다는 확고한 근거가 드러나 있지 않기 때문이다. 두 사진의 전후 관계, 찍은 의도, 연출 여부 등이 거의 필자의 인상에 의해 판단되었다는 것이다. 손택은 전쟁 스펙터클 연출을 비판했지만, 정작은 손택이 탈권위 사회 대중의 입맛에 맞는 신성 모독의 스펙터클을 만들어 낸 것 아닐까. 이 의심을 규명하기 위한 에롤 모리스의 집요한 탐사는 정말이지 혀를 내두르게 한다. 펜튼을 옹호하는 사람도 비난하는 사람도 공히 판단의 근거를 그에 선행하는 판단(누구는 야비한/정직한 인간이다, 누구는 현시욕에 차 있는 사람이다 등등)에서 구하곤 한다. 저자는 관련된 인물들을 한 명씩 인터뷰해 보고 문헌들을 샅샅이 뒤지며 현장 답사에까지 나선다. 당시의 정황은 그렇게 조금씩 복원되기 시작하고, 포탄과 여타 지형지물의 변화 양상, 그림자 길이 분석 등을 통해 사진의 선후 관계가 마침내 밝혀진다. 그래서 드러난 사실이 손택의 판단을 반박하는 것이었을까? 물론 그것이 중요한 것은 아니라는 게 이 책의 메시지다. 논쟁적 사안의 판단을 위해서는 보이는 것, 지금 내게 수용된 정보만을 특권화하지 않고 구체적 상황 속으로 들어가 살피려는 노력, 노동이 필요하다는 것이다. 다른 한 케이스에는 이라크전쟁이 벌어지고 있던 2003년, 아부 그라이브 수용소에서 한 미군 여성 병사가 (포로였던 것으로 여겨지는) 아랍인의 사체 앞에서 찍은 사진이 다뤄진다. 그녀는 모독적이게도 사체를 배경으로 만면에 웃음을 가득히 띄운 채 엄지까지 세워서 기념 사진을 찍었다. 아랍 세계에서 그녀는 미군의 악마성을 상징하는 인물로 부각되었고, 자국에서도 비윤리적 전쟁 범죄를 저지른 사람으로 비난받았다(군사법정에서 유죄평결을 받기도 했다). 하지만 에롤 모리스는 이 사진이 주는 즉각적 거부감, 불쾌감, 혐오감이 우리 판단력에 영향을 주는 것이 아닐까 의심한다(다시 말해 그 혐오감은 사실 구경꾼이 갖는 죄책감의 투사일 수 있다는 것이다). 이 사진이, 그리고 이 사진에 담겨 있는 요소들이 실제로 말하고 있는 것은 무엇인가. 우리에게 수용=해석되기 전의 ‘사진의 말’은 정확히 무엇이었나. 저자는 그렇게 프레임 밖 코끼리를 향해 나아간다. 3. 에롤 모리스의 메시지는 새롭지 않다. 우리 판단력의 불완전함, 감정에 휘둘리기 쉬움, 입맛에 맞는 해석 프레임을 고수하려는 습성 등을 항시 성찰해야 한다는 것. 나아가 어떤 설명이 너무 잘 맞아떨어져서, 어떤 증거가 너무 분명해 보여서 이 사안을 더 거들떠보지 않아도 되겠다는 느낌을 줄 정도라면 오히려 더 강하게 의심해 보아야 한다는 것(그만큼 의심을 거부하는 힘이 강력하므로). 대체로 누구나 고개를 끄덕일 수 있는 메시지일 것이다. 하지만 우리는 일상 속에서 이러한 태도를 잘 유지하지 못한다. 인기를 끌었던 비밀의 숲 같은 드라마를 떠올려 보자. 어린 시절의 사고로 감정 표출이 억눌린 검사 주인공과 누구보다 따뜻한 마음씨를 가진 경찰관이 협력해 그야말로 숲처럼 우거진 비밀의 켜를 하나하나 벗겨내며 진실에 접근해 가는 이야기이다. 거듭되는 반전의 서스펜스가 성공의 열쇠였다고 할 수도 있지만 또한 현실 속에서 잘 드러나 보이지 않는 진실에 대한 대중의 열망을 자극했다는 평가도 있다. 나는 두 평가 다 맞는 이야기일 것 같다. 현실에서 진실 추구하기의 까다로움은 영웅적인 주인공들이 되풀이되는 파고를 타넘으며 드라마틱하게 해소되고, 특히 종반의 교훈적 전개는 관람자로 하여금 마치 본인이 이 정의 구현의 주체가 된 듯한 착각을 하게 만든다. 밤을 새가며 증거를 검토하고 현장 검증을 하고 과거의 판단을 곱씹으며 반성해 보는 등의 노동 과정은 그렇게 대리된다. 작년의 일이다. SNS 서비스 트위터를 중심으로 ‘문단 내 성폭력’을 고발하는 사람들이 속속 출현했다. 한국 문학계에서는 등단이라는 시스템이 기성 작가들에게 습작생들에 대한 특수한 권력 우위를 부여하고 있는데, 이 우위를 활용해 습작생들에게서 성을 착취한 사례들이 고발되었다. 문제는 문단 시스템이 작가에게 부여하는 권력 우위가 성폭력을 판정하는 법적 의미에서의 ‘위계에 의한 강제’에 해당하지 않는다는 점이다. 만약 어떤 작가가 법이 규정하는 폭력의 역치를 넘어서지 않을 정도의 여러 형태의 강제력을 요령껏 조합해 습작생을 성적으로 착취했을 경우, 그것은 법적 의미에서는 성폭력으로 규정되지 않는다. (구성 요건이 어땠다거나 조각이 저쨌다거나 하는 용어는 아무래도 좋다.) 일례로, 가장 대표적인 고발 사건은 한 남성 시인 P와 몇 명의 여성 습작생에 관한 것이었다. P는 여성 습작생들에게 같이 공부를 하자거나 시를 가르쳐 주겠다는 빌미로 개인적으로 접근했고, 그로부터 성적 접촉의 기회를 엿보거나 시도했다. 그의 전형적 수법은 어느 정도 교분이 생긴 습작생을 ‘네가 지금 내게 와 주지 않으면 자살하겠다’는 류의 메시지로 불러내 같이 술을 마시자고 종용하고, 심야까지 술자리를 끌다가 모텔 등으로 유인하는 것이었다. 문단 내 성폭력 고발의 기치가 갓 올라갔을 때, P는 모 신문에 기명 기고로 ‘나 또한 문단 내 성폭력의 가해자였다’는 고백을 한다(불분명하게나마 자신의 수법 또한 실토하고 있다). 하지만 불붙은 여론과 고발자들은 그의 고백에 만족하지 못했고 그의 시집을 출판한 출판사에 절판을 요구해 그 요구를 관철시켰다. 또한 실질적 고소고발 소송으로까지 나아가게 된다. 소송비용 모금이 진행되었고 고발자와 연대자들의 글을 모은 책의 출판도 추진되었다. 문제는 이후의 전개다(여기서는 많은 부분을 생략할 수밖에 없겠다). 여러 사건이 누적되며 문단 내 성폭력 고발 운동은 와해 지경에 몰리게 되고, 일부 피고발인들의 반격이 시작된다. 후원을 잃은 고발자들은 성폭력 판결에서 패소하고 역고소(명예훼손)를 당한다. 특히 지금 화제가 되고 있는 것은 위에 언급한 P 시인이다. 법원 판결(성폭력 무혐의, 역고소 승소)의 캡처, 과거 고발자 및 연대자(그에 대한 비판자)의 자극적 언사의 캡처 등을 SNS에 게시하고 자신의 파탄난 삶과 회복에의 의지를 함께 수시로 올렸다. 이로부터 고발자 및 연대자들에 대한 비난 여론이 일었다. 특히 결정적 도화선이 된 것은 ‘한’ 고발자(편의상 O라고 부르자)가 P에게 보낸 카카오톡 메시지의 캡처였다. 그 캡처 속에서 O는 고발이 허위에서 비롯된 것이며 용서를 구한다고 그야말로 싹싹 빌고 있다. 내 생각에는 이 한 컷이 국면 전환의 결정타가 되었다. 하지만 실제로 이 이미지는 우리에게 무엇을 말해 주는가. O의 신원은 여기서 전혀 드러나지 않지만, 여론에서는 O가 법적 공방을 벌인 고발자 중 한 명인 것으로 의심 없이 받아들여지고 있는 듯하다. 하지만 P는 O의 신원과 진행 중이던 맞고소 사건의 당사자를 직접적으로 연결 짓는 언급을 적어도 공적으로는 한 바가 없는 듯하다. 관련 이미지들을 검색해 본 결과, 모 언론에서 이 사건을 다루며 O가 “상대 여성으로 추정되는”이라고 언급한 것을 찾아볼 수 있었을 뿐이다. 하지만 O는 맞고소의 당사자일 수도 있고 다른 많은 폭로자 가운데 한 명일 수도 있으며 P를 위해 그런 이를 연기한 누군가일 수도 있다. 가능성은 열려 있다. 한편 온라인 기반 논쟁에서 흔히 레퍼런스로 쓰이는 나무위키는 ‘결론’ 항목에 이 카톡 내용을 포함하고 있다. 그러나 O의 신원이 공방의 고발자가 아니라면 이는 혼동을 불러일으키는 항목 구성이 된다. 문단 내 성폭력 고발의 흐름 속에서 P 사건을 계속 쫓아온 사람이라면 그가 수차례 자살 소동을 벌인 것을 알고 있을 것이다. 일단 그것은 과거 그의 수법의 핵심 요소였고, 비난 여론이 과열되어 있을 때 찬물을 끼얹듯 ‘형이 투신자살을 했다’는 ‘동생의 대리 트윗’이 올라와 혼란을 빚은 바도 있다. 최근 P의 트위터 계정에는 유서를 연상시키는 글이 올라왔고, 이튿날 그의 아버지라고 주장하는 트위터 계정으로 또 하나의 인증 사진이 업로드된다. 약을 먹고 쓰러져 있던 것이 발견되어 병원에 응급 이송되었다는 것이다. 주삿바늘이 꼽혀 있고 환자 태그가 부착된 그(라고 주장되는 이)의 손을 찍은 사진이 함께 업로드되었다. 그가 허위 자살 소동을 벌인 전력이 있다 해서 이번에도 거짓일 거라 유추하는 것은 섣부를 수 있다. 오히려 자살 소동으로 조롱받는 일이 잦았기 때문에 그에 대한 복수심에 자살을 선택했을 수도 있다. 이 사안은 점점 더 많은 혼선을 빚고 있는 것으로 보인다. 그 혼선은 누군가에게 어떤 면에서는 이득이 될 수도 있고 그저 모두에게 씻을 수 없는 상처를 입힐 위협이 될 수도 있다. 당연히 스포트라이트는 점점 더 사안의 자극적인 부분으로 모이고 있다. 프레임 바깥은 점점 더 어두워지고 있다. 이제 코끼리가 떠날 수도 있을 것이다. 약간 맥락이 다릅니다만 영화 <엘리펀트>가 떠오릅니다. 구체적인 '참사'는, 나아가 추상적인 '객관세계'는, 우리가 온전하게 인지하고 수용할 수 없는 미지의 것이고, 우리가 거기서 진실이라고 생각하는 것을 포착하기 위해 노력한다한들 장님 코끼리 만지기가 될 뿐이며, 관객이자 작가로서 우리가 서사를 투명하게 받아들이고 옮겨 구술하는 것은 불가능하다는 태도가 인상적이었네요. 그리고 이렇게 절대적으로 무력한 존재인 우리네가 꾀할 수 있는 것은 비록 그게 장님 코끼리 만지기 식일지언정 비극이 일어나기 직전의 시간으로 끊임없이 돌아가는 방법 뿐이라는 것처럼 거듭 총기 난사 직전의 시작점으로 영화가 회귀하지요. 혹자들은 이걸 사건의 처참함을 절절히 전달하지 못한 허영적인 작품이라고 평했습니다만, 제가 보기엔 되려 주검 앞에서 우리가 취할 수 있는 '그나마' 가장 건전하고 윤리적인 자세가 무엇인지 드러내는 작품이 아니었나 싶습니다. 다만 그런 '윤리적 자세를 취하려고자 하는, 떳떳함에 대한 강박' 자체가 허영적인 태도가 아닐까 싶기도 하죠. 그래서 '그나마'인 것이겠지만요. 여하간 가짜뉴스가 판치는 것도 숲속친구들이 양산되는 것도 그러한 의미없는 밈이 복제되는 것도 모두 우리가 장님이기 때문이며 결코 어떤 경우에도 우리는 눈을 떠 코끼리의 전모를 알 수 없다는 것을 수긍해야겠죠. 그런 겸허함만이 '그나마' 사건의 실상에 발 하나라도 가깝게 만드는 것일 테고.
