 예전에 잠깐 일본 만화 출간 검토 알바를 한 적이 있습니다. 많이 한 건 아닌데... 어떻게 보면 별 거 아닌 만화인데 저한테는 완전 꽂혔던 만화가 있어요. 그게 바로 <13월의 유령>입니다. 이하는 돈 받고 쓴 검토서의 일부를 좀 매만지고 짜깁는 게 될 텐데... 뭐 괜찮겠죠. 일단 이 작가 다카노 스즈메(高野雀) 쿨해요. '이 만화가 대단하다'(여성향) 2016년에 데뷔작으로 랭크인되기도 한 실력파인데, 그 데뷔작에 대한 검토서용 요약을 저는 이렇게 써 두었네요. 「사요나라 걸프렌드」 이 단편집의 표제작으로서 전체 분량의 1/3 이상을 차지한다. 배경은 시간이 흐르지 않고 고이는 듯한 산골 마을의 늦더위가 계속되는 9월. 주인공은 졸업을 앞둔 여고생 타키모토 치호. 권태에 잠긴 듯한 태도를 가진, 공부를 잘하는(그래서 도쿄 진학을 고려하는), 평범한 성욕 덩어리 남친을 둔 여성. 이야기는 그 한심한 남친이 ‘Bitch 선배’(이름은 다부치 리나. 아무에게나 쉽게 몸을 내준다는 소문 때문에 붙은 멸칭)와 섹스를 한 것을 들키면서 시작된다. 그는 발각된 뒤에도 너무 당당하고 여전히 섹스를 요구한다. 치호는 이 마을도, 남친도 지긋지긋해서 자포자기의 심정으로 응한다. 잠깐 리나의 등장으로 돌아가 보면(남친과 이동하다가 마주치고, 그 자리에서 상황을 간파한다), 인물들을 대체로 수수하고 개성 없게, 평면적 외견으로 그리는 작가 특유의 화풍에서 돌출되는 미형이다. 물론 ‘양키녀’의 전형성을 따라 좀 생각 없는 인물로 그려지기도 한다. 어쨌든 아마 치호의 눈에 리나가 강한 인상을 남겼음을 표현한 것이겠다. 치호가 심부름으로 우유를 사러 편의점에 갔다가 둘은 재회하고, 묘하게 의기투합한다. 마을이 지긋지긋하고 답답한 치호는 이 교외의 삶에 기대도 실망도 없고 그게 어떤 무방비한 느낌으로까지 번져 있는 리나에게 관심을 갖게 된다. 이후는 치호가 리나에 대해 알아가는 과정이 그려진다. 리나는 이래저래 한심하고 현실감이 없는 사람이다. 치호가 느끼는 자포자기가 어떤 선을 넘으면 리나의 거의 백치적으로 보이는 상태로 갈 수 있겠다는 생각을 독자로 하여금 하게 한다. 또 치호가 마을에 대해 느끼는 부정적 감정의 응결이자 부산물 격인 리나에게 호감을 느낀다는 건 약간 부조리한 데가 있고, 그렇기 때문에 리나라는 존재는 작품의 배경으로 제시된 권태의 분위기에 균열을 낸다. 리나의 등장은 치호를 변화와 이행으로 향하게끔 추동한다. 한심한 남친에게 이별을 통고하고 강간을 시도하는 그를 밀쳐낸다(도입의 섹스신과 대립). 그리고 리나를 만나는데, 일반적인 로맨스물이라면 ‘평범해 보이지만 나쁜 남친’을 대체하는 ‘날라리이지만 속은 착하고 자유로운 새 남자’가 들어갈 법한 자리에 리나가 들어가 있는 것 같아서 재밌다. 어쨌든 둘은 더 가까워지고 치호는 리나에게 그렇게 ‘헤프게’ 굴지 말아달라는 뜻을 어필한다(리나를 아끼는 마음을 표현하기 시작한 것). 하지만 곧장 리나에게 비극이 닥치는데 마을 남자애들에게 린치를 당한 것이다. 가해자에는 치호의 구남친도 들어가 있고, 다른 학생들은 이 일을 소문으로 소비할 뿐이다. 치호는 리나 병문안을 가고 수험을 치르고 도쿄에 있는 대학에 합격한다. 리나가 퇴원한 후 둘은 마을이 내려다 보이는 곳(리나가 치호에게 알려준)에서 작별의 대화를 나눈다. 리나는 알아차리지 못하는 것 같지만 치호는 우회적으로 자신의 마음을 전한다. 리나는 공항에 나오지 않고, 치호는 비행기 탑승하고도 휴대전화를 끄지 못하다가, 상공에서 리나의 작별 문자를 받는다. +) 정지(권태)와 변화의 모티브를 반복하는 작품집이다. 동성(여성) 간의 우정 이상 사랑 미만의 감정을 소재로 삼기를 좋아하는 작가. 컷을 많이 쪼개 쓰는 타입으로 보인다. 기본적으로 정적이기 때문에 잦은 컷 전환으로 운동감을 만드는(자세히 볼수록 굉장한 테크니션이라는 생각을 하게 되는). 같은 상황을 반전시켜서 반복시키는 것도 좋아하는 것 같다. 그래서 내러티브 면에서는 대체로 찌르는 데 없이 밋밋하지만 지루하게 읽히지 않는다. 하지만 소년만화 읽듯 훌훌 읽으면 재미를 느끼기 어려운 만화. 연령대도 20대 이상, 과거든 현재든 자기 객관화를 어느 정도 할 수 있는 나이대에게 공감을 얻을 것이다. ‘섬세하고 불안정한 현대 청년층의 내면 묘사에 능하다’ 정도로 정리할 수 있을 것 같다. 아무튼 이건 단편집 리뷰의 일부인 거고... <13월의 유령>은 첫 장편입니다. '여자와 남자 그리고 여장남자의 삼각관계'라는 신기한 구도이거든요. '여자'는 '네리'라는 캐릭터이고 여자여자한 외모를 타고났지만 절대 치마 이런 거 입지 않습니다. 청바지에 점퍼가 기본. 그 이란성 쌍둥이 남동생이 '여장남자'인 '키리', 그리고 '키리'라는 인간 전부가 아니라 오로지 '여장 키리' 부분만을 열렬히 사모하는 남자 '스오우'가 주인공인 요상한 만화. 아마존 재팬 독자평을 보면 사랑의 동기가 오직 외관인 인물들만 등장하는 이상하고 황당한 만화라는 평이 있는데, 제가 보기엔 이 만화의 정말 재밌는 점이 그것입니다. 리얼 연애의 다층성을 일부러 휘발시켜 버리고 굉장히 한정적이고 표층적인 영역만 남김으로써 재밌는 실험적 로맨스물의 무대를 만든 것이죠. 보통 업계에서는 '도비라'라고 부르는 본문 앞 페이지에는 이런 문구가 적혀 있습니다. "인생을 선택할 수 없지만 입을 옷 정도는 선택할 수 있다." 이 문구가 제겐 너무 와 닿았어요. 저는 살면서 제 성적 기호(헤테로섹슈얼 남성)를 의심한 적은 없지만 사회적 수준에서 수행할 것으로 기대되는 남성성의 모든 요소들이 잘 맞지 않는 옷 같았어요. 특히 옷이 그랬고요. 남자애들 옷 너무 뻔하고 재미 없잖아요. 뭐 하이패션의 세계로 가면 어떨지 모르겠지만요. 나아가 '여자가 되고 싶다'는 생각을 아마 다른 남성보단 많이 한 편일 것 같고요. 그건 실제로 성전환을 하고 싶다는 의미와는 좀 동떨어진 것인데, 그렇게까지 소수자의 삶을 감내할 생각은 조금도 없는 것이죠. 다른 성에 대해 이성애자 남자로 사는 거 종합적으로 견주어 보면 비교할 수 없이 편하거든. 제가 되고 싶은 건 딱 여성의 외관, 여성적인 외관까지인 거죠. 이거 좀 야비하게 들릴 수 있을 것 같지만 아무튼... 그래서 주요 인물 중 누구도 근본적인 자신의 헤테로섹슈얼리티는 유지하면서('남자랑 잘래, 여자랑 잘래') 사회문화적으로 주어진 엄격한 성별적 수행성의 구분은 넘어서고 싶어하는 인물들이 등장하는 이야기가 재밌게 다가왔던 것 같습니다. 올해 2권이 나왔던데 1권 내용을 요약하면 대략 이래요. Scene. 1 네리는 합동 미팅에 청바지, 점퍼 차림으로 나갈 정도로 패션 감각이 주류에서 동떨어진 여성이다. 패션 음치라서가 아니라 일반적으로 좋아하는 ‘귀여운’ 계열 옷을 싫어하고 남성복에 기호가 있기 때문이다. 네리는 친구에게서 ‘너랑 똑닮은 귀여운 옷을 입은 사람을 봤다’는 얘기를 듣고 우연히 바로 그 사람과 마주치게 되는데, 그 정체는 이란성 쌍둥이 남동생인 키리였다. 네리는 키리에게 성전환을 한 거냐고 묻지만 ‘단지 여장일 뿐’이라는 답을 듣게 된다. 어쨌든 네리는 키리와 헤어져 서둘러 미팅에 향하고, 그곳에서 딱 취향인 남자를 발견하는데, 어쩐지 이 남자가 네리에게 자기가 좋아하는 얼굴이라며 마구 들이댄다. 하지만 실망스럽게도 이 남자에게는 동거인이 있다. 그런데 동거인이 자신을 좋아하지 않는다고 말하는 이 남자. 네리는 술에 잔뜩 취한 남자를 신주쿠역까지 끌고 간다. 그리고 남자가 불러낸 동거인은 놀랍게도 여전히 여장을 한 키리이다. 남자의 이름은 스오우. 네리는 스오우가 키리에 대한 마음을 자신에게 투사했던 것임을 간파한다. 이렇게 기묘한 삼각관계의 인물들이 처음으로 한 곳에 모이면서 1막이 끝난다. 또 1막에서는 네리와 키리의 복장에 대한 각각의 독특한 기호에는 어떤 깊은 연원(네리의 경우 좌절감, 상실감을 동반하는)이 있다고 암시된다. Scene. 2 2막은 키리의 과거담으로 시작한다. 귀여운 외모와 밝은 성격의 소년이었던 키리는 학교에서 낯선 사람에게 성폭행을 당하고 ‘예쁘다’는 말에 공포와 불안을 느끼게 된다. 그 공포와 불안에서 처음으로 해방된 것이 고등학교 여장 콘테스트 우승의 날이다(키리의 과거담 속 네리는 터프한 가라데 소녀이다). 다시 네리의 시점. 네리는 3~4년 만에 키리와 재회한 것이다. 그동안은 둘 사이에 이렇다 할 교류가 없었기 때문에 키리가 왜, 언제부터 여장을 하게 된 것인지 네리는 모른다. 네리가 아는 키리는 어릴 때부터 말수가 적고 고집이 셌기 때문에 가족끼리라도 알 수 없는 건 알 수 없다는 생각을 한다(당연히 키리는 성폭행 사실을 비밀로 했다). 네리의 친구와 네리, 키리 셋이 동석한 자리에서 네리는 머리를 기르기 시작한 게 어릴 때 키리와 자주 착각당했기 때문이라고 말한다. 그리고 키리는 잊었던 사실을 떠올리게 되는데, 자신을 성폭행했던 변태는 가라데 소녀 네리에게 (아마 네리를 키리라 생각하고 덮쳤다가) 격퇴당하고 경찰에 넘겨졌다. 키리는 네리가 자신의 구원자였다는 사실을 떠올리고는 깊은 고마움을 느낀다. Scene. 3 이번에는 스오우 시점에서 출발한다. 스오우는 인기가 많은 편이었지만 자신과 사랑의 감정은 거리가 멀다 생각해 왔다. 스오우는 고등학교에 진학해 키리와 같은 반이 되고, 딱히 성적 이끌림은 아니지만 그에게 호감을 갖게 된다. 그리고 운명의 여장 콘테스트에서 우승하는 키리를 지켜보며, 스오우는 사랑에 빠진다. 아주 단단히. 스오우는 졸업 이후에도 키리에 대한 사랑의 주박에서 놓여나지 못해 계속해서 사랑에 실패한다. 이번에도 동거하던 애인이 떠나며서 ‘당신의 눈은 너무 높다’는 얘기를 남긴다. 그러던 어느 날, 스오우는 카페 바깥으로 지나가는 이상의 여성을 보고 드디어 키리의 환영에서 벗어나는가 기대하며 붙잡지만, 그 사람은 다름 아닌 키리였다. 이렇게 재회한 두 사람인데, 마침 키리는 이사할 곳을 찾던 참이라고 하고 스오우는 애인이 쓰던 방이 비었으니 ‘같이 살자’고 제안한다. Scene. 4 네리는 키리에 대한 질투로 일상생활의 균형을 잃을 지경이다. 그리고 과거 회상. 성장해 중학생이 되면서 네리를 둘러싼 환경의 ‘여자애다울 것’에 대한 압박도 강해진다. 네리로서는 이 압박에 필사적으로 맞서면서(‘핑크와 리본만큼은 절대 안 한다’) 스스로를 여자로서의 사회화에서 ‘보결 합격’이라고 평가한다. 성년이 될 때까지. 다시 현실. 네리는 마트에서 우연히 스오우와 만나서 같이 카페에 간다. 미팅 날 자신이 많이 취해서 이상한 소리를 하지 않았냐고 묻는 스오우. 네리는 스오우가 키리를 좋아한다는 얘기도 들었다고 이야기하고, 게이로서 짝사랑을 하는 당신도 고생이지만 간만에 딱 취향인 남자 찾았는데 하필 게이인 내 팔자도 팔자라는 말을 던지고, 이에 스오우는 ‘나는 그런데 게이는 아니다’라고 받아친다. 즉 스오우는 게이가 아니고 정말 여성인 네리(=키리)의 외모에 더해 키리의 여장처럼 예쁘고 귀여운 스타일로 입어야 사랑을 느끼는 취향인 것이다. 헤테로로서의 스오우가 꿈꾸는 가장 이상적인 여성상을 오로지 키리라는 남성만이 구현할 수 있다는 게 그의 딜레마인 것이다. 네리 입장에서 보자면, 스오우를 원한다면 복장으로 표현되는 여성스러움에 대한 거리 두기를 포기하는 게 바람직한 전략인 게 된다. 혼란에 빠진 네리는 스오우를 남겨두고 먼저 자리를 뜬다. Scene. 5 스오우는 네리와의 대화에서, 헤테로이지만 키리처럼 생긴 여자(혹은 키리가 구현하는 바로 그 여자)가 아니면 싫은 자신에게 네리가 대안이 될 수 있음을 어렴풋이 직감한다. 물론 그런 계산적인 자신을 다스리지만. 한편 키리는 여장을 한 상태로 물건을 사러 나갔다가 회사 사람을 만나, 사진을 찍힌다(그간에도 괴롭힘이 있어 왔다는 듯이 암시된다). 키리는 패닉에 빠져 집에 틀어박히고 스오우는 네리에게 도움을 청한다. Scene. 6 네리는 키리를 곤란에서 구출하기 위해 작전을 짠다. 그토록 꺼려 왔던 여자여자스러운 옷을 입고 키리와 함께 키리 회사에 가는 것이다. 친구들을 대동하고 키리 집에 와서 옷을 갈아입고 풀메이크업, 회사로 쳐들어가서 키리 도촬 건을 해결하지만, 키리로서는 여성스럽게 입은 네리의 모습을 보며 새로운 딜레마를 느낀다. ‘내 이상이 이미 타인으로서 존재한다면 나는 대체 무엇인가’라는 것이다. Scene. 7 원래 옷으로 갈아입기 위해 먼저 키리 집으로 돌아온 네리. 그곳에서 일찍 퇴근하고 온 스오우와 마주치고 스오우는 얼어붙는다. 네리인 것을 알고 스오우도 원래대로 돌아오지만 어쩐지 열받는 네리. 키리는 네리 친구들과 호프에서 뒤풀이를 한다. 네리의 모습을 보고 의기소침해진 키리는 한동안 여장은 안 하려 한다고 말하고, 네리 친구는 이렇게 격려한다. ‘신데렐라와 비슷하다. 멋지게 치장하는 건 내가 여기까지 갈 수 있구나 하며 자기 잠재력을 확인하는 것이기도 하다. 마법은 시간이 지나면 풀리지만 자신감은 남는다.’ 키리 집에 손목시계를 놔두고 온 네리는 스오우에게 시계를 전해 받기로 하는데, 고민 끝에 평소보다 여성스러운 복장을 하고 나간다. 스오우는 아주 선선한 태도로 네리의 외모를 칭찬하고 네리의 고민을 이해한다는 듯이 ‘사귀자’고 이야기한다. 네리는 잠시 망설이다가 받아들인다. Another Scene 네리가 처음으로 월경을 시작한 중학교 시절, 그 고통과 감각, 그리고 앞으로 다가올 여자로서의 삶의 무게에 대한 불안감을 더 이상 날 수 없게 된 마법소녀에 비유해 짧게 그렸다. 그리고 제가 덧붙인 총평은 이렇네요. 크로스드레싱이라는 소재를 통해 기성 로맨스물의 사각을 공략하는 기발한 작품이었습니다. 전체적으로 장단점이 뚜렷해 보이는데, 저는 장점에 더 점수를 주고 싶습니다. 크로스드레싱이 한국 독자 대중에게 친숙한 소재는 아닐 테지만, 성적 전형성에 대한 새로운 도전(기성 LGBT 운동과는 약간 다른)이라는 측면에서 신선함이 있습니다. 또 성별화된 외모와 복장에 대한 압력은 학교, 직장, 가족, 친구 그룹 등 사회 집단 전체에서 상당히 일반적인 문제이니 독자들이 이 작품으로부터 공감의 실마리를 찾기가 쉬울 것입니다. 그림은 선이 단순하고 인물들을 과장된 미형으로 그리지 않습니다. 남녀 독자 가리지 않고 어필할 듯합니다. 캐릭터 구축이 아주 심층적으로 되어 있지는 않은 것 같았는데, 그건 원래 단권으로 구상했던 작품인 탓도 있는 것 같고, 또 의도적인 면도 있어 보입니다. 인물들의 표정이 생생하고 대사가 재치 있어서, 심리·정서 묘사의 깊이가 부족함에도(섬세하지 않다는 뜻은 아니고요) 금방 캐릭터에 애정을 갖게 되고 이야기에 설득됩니다. 단점을 말하자면, 우연의 도움을 너무 자주 받는 느낌이 있습니다. 정통파 로맨스물, 러브코미디물이라기보다는 꼭 퍼즐 맞추기 같은 느낌이 있습니다. 몇 가지 독특한 속성으로 환원 가능한 인물들을 무대에 던져 놓고 어떤 그림이 나오는지를 보여 주는 느낌이라고나 할까요. 이야기를 앞으로 전개시켜야 할 때는 우연한 만남을 집어넣고요. 그런데 이게 작품 전반의 쿨한 분위기와 상통해서 큰 단점으로 느껴지지는 않았습니다. 시시콜콜, 꼬치꼬치가 어울리는 분위기가 아니거든요. 주인공들은 서로에게 무언가를 따져 묻는 일이 없습니다. 서로의 이질적인 속성을 캐묻지 않고 있는 그대로 상대를 인정하며 돌보고 사랑을 추구하는 주인공들과, (성적 규범을 매개로) 타인을 재단하고 강제하고 폭력을 휘두르는 세상의 대립 구도가 작품의 근간을 이룹니다. 키리의 딜레마가 새로운 차원으로 옮겨 가고, 스오우와 네리는 아주 합리적이면서도 기이한 사랑 아닌 사랑을 시작하며 1권이 끝나서 긴장감이 유지되고 다음 권이 읽고 싶습니다(앞으로 한두 권으로 끝나지 않을까요?). 일본에서 올해 3월인가에 2권이 나온 걸 방금 알고 예전에 써 놓았던 검토서 꺼내 읽다가 티타임에까지 올리게 되네요.ㅎㅎ 일본어 가능하신 분은 함 읽어 보세요. 재밌음!
