사회과학의 철학 - 테드 벤튼, 이안 크레이브 에서 요약 발췌 경험주의와 실증주의의 몇 가지 문제 들어가며: 실증주의 비판의 두 방식 사회과학에서 실증주의에 대한 비판 (1) 과학적 방법을 인간의 사회적 삶의 영역으로 확장하는 데 관한 것. 인간의 사회적 삶과 자연의 사실 사이에는 근본적인 차이가 있다. 이러한 차이의 한 가지는 탐구의 주제 선택에 도덕적 또는 정치적 가치가 개입하는 방식과 관련이 있다. 이것은 자연과학자와 그의 연구주제 사이의 외적 관계와 크게 다르다. (2) 과학의 방법을 사회연구에 확대하는 것 자체가 아니라 과학의 방법을 사회연구에까지 확대할 때 우리는 과학에 대해 어떤 견해를 가지고 있는가하는 것. 실증주의의 견해와 해석주의적 견해를 (이것들이 대안의 전부인 것처럼) 대비하는 것은 사회과학철학자들 사이에서 흔한 일이었다. 그러나 다른 대안도 있다. 즉, 실증주의가 제시하는 과학에 대한 경험주의적 견해는 기각하면서도, 자연과학이 어떤 것인가에 대한 대안적인 견해에 의지하여 사회를 과학적으로 연구할 수 있는 가능성은 여전히 열려 있다. ✔ 비판적 실재론의 핵심테제. 주목해야 할 것은 자연과학과 구별되는 사회과학의 독특한 방법론 · 인과론을 제시하는 것이 아니라 '자연과학에 대한 대안적 이해'를 바탕으로 사회과학을 정초하겠다는 프로젝트를 제시하고 있다는 것이다. 이것은 비판적 실재론이 실증주의의 자연주의와는 구별되는 (동시에 자연과학과 사회과학을 완전히 분리하지 않는) 비판적 자연주의에 의지하고 있다는 것을 드러낸다. 경험주의의 몇 가지 문제 개념과 경험 지시습득은 감각경험의 흐름 속에 보이는 규칙성의 유형을 인식하는 문제에 그칠 수 없다. 경험은 감각인상과 개념적 정리 및 선택의 복합적인 종합이다. 경험을 언어로 표현하는 활동은 바로 경험에 개념적 질서를 부여하는 것이다. 우리는 불타는 장작을 만지는 것이 통증을 일으킨다는 것을 경험으로부터 배울 수 있지만, '원인' 개념 자체는 경험에서 도출할 수 없다. 칸트에 의하면 모든 경험적 판단은 이러한 기본적인 조직화하는 개념들을 전제하며 그러므로 이 개념들은 인간에게 생득적이고 보편적인 것으로 생각해야 한다. 칸트 이래 경험주의에 대한 주요한 대안적 접근은 그의 저작을 출발점으로 삼는다. 과학의 법칙, 시험가능성과 해석 과학적 진술은 경험적으로 시험가능해야 한다는 경험주의의 요구는 몇 가지 난점을 가지고 있다. 경험주의의 요구를 엄격하게 적용한다면 훨씬 더 제한적인 가설만을 제출해야 하며 과학의 법칙은 관찰의 단순한 요약으로, 경험적 일반화로 취급해야 할 것이다. 이 경우 과학은 설명력을 상실하고 예측은 불가능할 것이다. ✔ 그러나 개방체계에 대한 과학의 준거로서 예측은 부적절하다. 설명력은 가지지만 예측은 불가능한 과학 역시 존재가능하기 때문이다. 물론 법칙이 법칙이기 위해서는 보편타당성, 즉 시간과 장소에 구애받지 않고 스스로를 관철하는 능력을 지녀야 한다. 그러나 동시에 과학의 법칙성은 철학적 진리의 전능성과는 구별된다. 개방체계라는 관념, 과잉결정, 법칙의 발현적 속성들은 바로 이러한 딜레마를 해결하기 위해 고안되었다. 과학적 법칙의 이러한 특징을 보존하기 위해서는 가설을 지지하거나 확증하는 증거를 양적으로 측정하는 방법을 발전시키거나 시험가능성에 대한 훨씬 느슨한 기준을 제시해야 한다. 새로운 관찰들은 단지 가설에 유리하거나 불리한 것일 뿐 가설을 결론적으로 입증하거나 반증할 수는 없는 것이라고 인정해야 한다. 그러나 이 경우 (이들이 목표로 하던) 과학과 비과학적인 믿음체계를 명확하게 구분하는 일이 어려워진다. 그러나 시험가능성에 대해서는 또 한가지의 어려움이 존재한다. 경험에 대한 모든 진술이 동시에 해석이라면 원칙적으로 모든 사실진술은 재해석할 수 있다. 일부의 증거에 대해 우리의 믿음을 확증하는 것으로 받아들일 것인가 아니면 기각하는 것으로 받아들일 것인가의 결정은 늘 주관적 판단을 포함한다. 경험주의자들은 이러한 협약주의적convertionalist 책략에 동의하지 않지만 이 책략을 부정하기는 어렵다. 과학에서 이론적 실체 협소한 형태의 경험주의는 직접 관찰할 수 없는 이론적 실체에 대한 언급을 배제할 것이다. 그렇지만 자연과학의 설명적 작업의 막대한 부분은, 만약 그것들이 존재한다면 그리고 과학자가 서술한 대로 움직인다면, 관찰된 현상을 설명할 수 있는 실체들의 부류를 고안하는 것을 포함한다. (멘델은 완두콩의 다음 세대의 특징 속에서 관찰가능한 유형을 다음 세대로 이어지는 생식세포 속에서 전달된 어떤 알려지지 않은 요인에 입각해서 설명했다. 이후의 연구는 이것을 복합적인 유기분자 DNA의 배열로 판별했다.) 이론적 설명의 유형 과학적 이론화는 다수의 상이한 종류의 질문에 답하기 위해 일어난다. 여기서 이론적이라고 합리적이라고 부를 수 있는 세 종류의 답이 있다. ① 기능적 설명: 요소들이나 부분들과 그것들이 속한 전체 사이의 관계에 관한 질문에 대답한다. 요소들이 특정 속성들이나 활동들을, 그것들이 속한 더 복합적인 전체나 체계의 지속적인 존속이나 재생산을 가능하게 하는 방식과 관련짓는다. ② 역사적 · 서사적 설명: 어떤 대상, 존재의 부류, 또는 현상의 유형이 존재하게 되었는가의 질문은 그것이 지금 어떻게 그 자체를 유지하는가 또는 유지되는가의 질문(기능주의)과구별된다. 이것은 인과기제에 대한 몇 가지 명시적이거나 암묵적인 준거를 제시해야 한다. 여기서 이론의 역할은 작동하고 있는 핵심적인 인과기제에 대한 해명 그리고 상호작용의 전형적 유형에 대한 약간의 묘사를 제공하는 것이다 ③ 가설연역모형: 관찰가능한 현상의 유형에서 시작하여 관찰들의 기저에 있는 미시구조에 대한 분석을 통한 인과관계에 대한 탐구로 나아간다. 과학자들은 관찰가능한, 거시수준의 유형을 해명하기 위하여 이론적 실체들이라는 미시구조와 그것들 사이의 관계를 고안한다. 미시수준의 실체들과 과정들을 서술하는 진술은 이론의 가설적 측면이며 이는 과학에서 관찰불가능한 실체들에 호소하는 것의 정당성이라는 오래된 문제로 되돌아갈 것이다. 일단 이론적 가설을 만들어냇다면 이론으로 셜명하고자 하는 현상을 서술하는 진술을 이론적 진술에서 연역해낼 수 있다. 경험주의자들은 직접 관찰할 수 있는 것에서 멀리 벗어나는 과학적 이론화에 반대하는 경향을 보인다. 그러므로 그들은 세계가 본질적으로 관찰할 수 잆는 종류의 사물과 유형으로 구성된다고 간주하는 상당히 평면적인 존재론을 제시한다. 여러종류의 실재론자들은 이러한 사유경향에 반대하는데 과학이 이룬 성과의 하나는 일상적인 관찰로는 접근할 수 없는 실체들과 과정들의 전체적인 범주들을 발견할 것이라는 점을 기꺼이 인정한다. 첫 번째 종류의 실재론자는 과학적 설명이 늘 거시적인 것에서 미시적인 것으로 움직인다고 간주한다. 사물을 그것을 구성하는 부분들에 입각해서 설명하며, 부분들은 그것들의 부분들에 입각해서 설명한다. 원칙적으로 복잡성의 수준이 높은 조직의 움직임은 우주를 구성하는 기초적인 구성요소에 입각하여 설명할 수 있을 것이다. 이것은 물리주의physicalism라고 부르는 종류의 과학적 형이상학이며 환원주의reductionism의 한 가지 사례이다. 그렇지만 과학이 참으로 세계의 물리적 구조에서 점점 더 기초적인 층들을 드러낸다는 점을 받아들이는 또 다른 종류의 실재론도 있다. 기초적인 층을 드러낸다 하더라도 그것이 복잡성의 수준이 높은 모든 것을 더 낮은 것에 입각하여 설명할 수 있다는 이야기로 이어지는 것은 아니다. 각각의 수준은 그 자체의 독자적인 특징을 가지고 있으며 따라서 그것의 '위' 또는 '아래' 수준에 관한 이론들에 대해 어느정도는 독자적으로 연구할 수 있다(Rose, 1997). 상이한 과학들의 상대적 자율성을 옹호하는 이런 주장의 근거는 높은 수준의 조직체가 보유하는 그러나 낮은 수준에서연역해낼 수는 없는 발현적 힘의 존재를 주장하는 것이다. 새의 유전적 형태에 대한 연구는 둥지를 짓거나 알을 낳는다는 것이 어떤 것인가에 대해 아무런 통찰도 제공하지 않을 것이다. 이러한 논의는 각 수준의 특수성을 고려하는 反환원주의적 형태의 실재론을 주장하는데 사용된다. 설명과 예측 경험주의 과학관은 설명과 예측이 대칭의 관계에 있다고 주장한다. 과학적 이론의 가설연역모형은 이 관계를 명확하게 보여준다. 그렇지만 그 과학관이 이 모형을 모든 종류의 설명에 적용하는가는 명확하지 않다. 예를 들어 왜 그리고 어떻게 그 현상이 일어났는가에 대한 역사적-서술적 종류의 질문을 제기할 수 있다. 역사적 과학이라고 부를 수 있는 것에서 이론이 담당하는 이론의 역할은, 이론이 명시하는 기제가 무수한 기제들 가운데 하나일 뿐이다. 이러한 여러한 기제는 관련된 여러 과학의 주제일 것이며 타당한 설명적 서사를 만들어내기 위한 경험적 연구의 수행을 위해서는 복잡한 형태의 다학문적 협력이 필요할 것이다. 셜명과 예측이 밀접하게 연결되어 있는 과학들에서는 이러한 경험적 연구가 통상적이다. 왜냐하면 특정한 기제들이 간섭들로부터 자연적으로 분리되어 있기 때문이거나 실험적 실천에 의해 그러한 개체들을 인위적으로 분리할 수 있기 때문이다. 반면 역사적 자연과학들과 대부분의 사회과학들에서는 이것이 통상적으로 불가능하다. 그리고 이것 때문에 이들 학문분과들에서는 일반적으로 설명이 예측력을 갖지 못한다. 과학에서 가치 가치판단의 성질에 대해 경험주의자는 두 가지 기본적인 선택지를 가진다. 경험주의자는 가치판단을 세게에서 즐거움을 더 얻고 고통을 줄이려는 행위의 결과에 대한 위장된 사실진술로 취급하거나 느낌이나 선호의 단순한 주관적 표현으로 취급할 수 있다. 가치판단에 대한 주관주의적 견해라고 할 후자의 견해는 20세기 경험주의자들 사이에 가장 널리 퍼진 것이며 경험주의자들은 과학에서 가치판단을 배제해야 한다고 주장한다. 그러나 모든 관찰은 개념적 해석이하는 능동적 과정을 포함하고 있다. 이론구성은 상상력을 사용하는 창의적 활동이다. 따라서 경험주의자는 이론을 고안하는 창의적 활동과 이론을 비판적으로 평가하고 경험적으로 시험하는 과정을 구분한다. 경험주의의 사실과 가치의 구분에 대해서 세 종류의 비판을 구별할 수 있다. ① 가치판단의 주관성을 문제삼고 적어도 일부의 경우 성공적인 설명은 도덕적 가치를 함축한다고 주장하는 것이다. 도덕적 상대주의라고 부를 수 있는 이 견해는 가치자체가 과학이 연구하는 실체들이나 과정들과 마찬가지로 독립적으로 실재한다고 주장한다. ② 규범과 가치는 과학적 지식주장에서 분리해낼 수 없다. 경험주의가 도덕적이고 정치적인 가치에 관한 갈등에서 벗어나 그것 위에 있다고 제시하는 과학의 모습은 과학에 위조된 사회적 권위를 부여하는 이데올로기이다. 과학자들에게 그 자신의 가치관여를 밝히고 그럼으로써 경쟁하는 가치들 및 그것들과 관련된 지식주장을 기술적 사안에 관한 의사결정을 위한 더 민주적인 제도의 맥락 속에서 숨김없이 토론할 수 있게 해야 한다. ③ 과학에는 본래 그리고 불가결하게 가치가 포함된다고 주장한다. 그러나 과학에 필수적이며 과학을 지원하는 규범 및 가치와 다른 한편으로 이러한 목표에 방해가 되거나 외부적인 가치는 여전히 구분할 수 있다. 실증주의의 그 밖의 문제들 사회에 대한 자연과학? 실증주의는 자연과학의 방법을 인간의 사회적 삶을 연구하는 것에까지 확대하는 시도에 대한 옹호이다. 자연의 과정을 과학적으로 연구하는 것과 동일한 의미의 사회에 대한 과학적 연구 같은 것이 있다는 견해는 흔히 자연주의natualism로 불린다. 베버, 윈치, 하버마스는 이런 의미에서 反자연주의자이고 콩트와 같은 실증주의자들은 자연주의자이다. 경험주의 과학관에 대한 비판과 대안은 실증주의적이지 않은 형태의 자연주의의 가능성을 제공한다. 사회적 삶에 대한 경험주의적 과학은 있을 수 없지만 사회과학도 대안적인, 비경험주의적인 과학모형의 관점에서 과학적이라고 간주할 수 있다는 것이다. 사회과학과 사회공학 실증주의는 사회과학적 지식을 사회정책 형성과정에 사회공학 기획의 형태로 공급할 수 있다는 의미에서 유용한 지식으로 본다. 그러나 자연과학의 특징인 설명과 예측의 대칭이 성립하지 않는 경우, 사회과학이 사회공학의 이러한 개량주의적 기획을 위한 적절한 종류의 지식을 제공할 수 있을 것인가는 분명하지 않다. 그 어떤 정책개입이든 그것의 결과는 사회적 과정들 사이의 복잡한 상호작용에 의해 변화될 것이며 이점을 고려할 방안이 없다면 개량전략은 의도하지 않은, 원하지 않은 결과들을 만들어낼 것이다. =================================================================================================== 사회과학의 철학이라는 책을 지인이 공부하기 위해 요약 발췌한 것을 같이 읽다가 좋은 것 같아서 함께 읽고 논의차 올려봅니다. 사실 저는 이해하기도 벅찬지라 ㅎㅎ. 전체 책에서 일부의 부분인데 전반적으로 되게 좋은 책이라는 생각을 했습니다.
