플로이드 메이웨더-코너 맥그리거 경기를 앞두고 경기에 대해 쓸 생각이 없었는데 -MMA를 모르니까- 복싱만 해본 수련자 입장에서 간단하게 코멘트해 본다. 전혀 고민 안 하고 썼으니 너무 심각하게 받아들이지 말기를. a. 원래 빅매치 전에는 각 진영의 트레이닝 캠프를 취재하는 사이드 프로그램들이 있기 마련인데 보통 4주를 취재하고 HBO의 경우에는 24/7이 SHOWTIME의 경우에는 All Access라는 프로그램이 있다. 이번 경기도 마찬가지로 올 엑세스가 있었는데 평소와는 달리 트레이닝보다는 놀고 돈뿌리는 것만 진창 보여줬다. 그건 아마 양 진영, 특히 맥그리거 진영의 복싱 트레이닝 수준이 엄청나게 낮아서 기대감을 낮추지 않기 위해 안 보여준 것으로 판단한다. 이렇게 미트워크조차 안보여주는 올 엑세스는 처음인데... 일단 공개 워크아웃에서 공개된 맥그리거의 복싱 수준은 처참했다는 것만 말해 둔다. b. 파퀴아오의 트레이너 프레디 로치는 맥그리거를 복싱 선수처럼 보이게 하는 데만 5개월은 걸릴 거라고 했고 나 역시 동의한다. 다만 그의 야매복싱을 쭉 보면 몇 가지 패턴을 발견할 수 있는데 -헐렁한 잽 -힘을 싣지 못하는 스트레이트 -지나치게 MMA 스타일에 익숙한 스텝 -스위치(사우스포-오소독스) 스텝을 주로 밟음 정도가 있다. 이 중 네번째를 제외하고서는 메이웨더에게 어려움을 가져다 줄 특징은 없을 것이며 특히 빠르게 백스텝을 밟지 못하는 세 번째 특징과 앵글을 고려하지 못하는 네 번째 특징은 공격 이후에 메이웨더의 공격을 코너가 말 그대로 몸으로 받아내야 한다는 것을 의미한다. 아마 코너가 선제공격을 했을 때 메이웨더가 슬쩍 피하고 맞받아치면 코너는 다시 빠질 수 없을 것이다. c. 메이웨더가 선수 생활 내내 암묵적으로 피한 유형의 선수는 신장이 크고 리치가 길며 잽이 쓸만해 메이웨더에게 안정적인 짤짤이를 강요할 수 있는 유형의 선수였다. 대표적으로 폴 윌리엄스가 있겠고 몇몇 크리틱들은 안토니오 마가리토를 추가할 수 있을 것이다. 실제 메이웨더가 치뤘던 경기에서 그런 특징을 가졌던 건 디에고 코랄레스와 오스카 델 라 호야였고 눈부신 전성기의 메이웨더는 분주하게 움직여서 승리를 가져갔다. 코너가 그 특징 중 어떤 게 해당되는지 보면 신장하고 리치는 있는데 잽이 없다. 이대로는 2014년도 5월에 벌어졌던 로버트 게레로의 마이너 열화카피 버전이다. d. 또 어디서 메이웨더의 손깨짐을 언급하는 자들이 있는데 막상 메이웨더가 그날, 즉 카를로스 헤르난데스 전에서 중간에 오른손이 부러져 왼손만으로 나머지 6라운드를 이겼던 걸 말하는 사람은 없다. 그 이후 메이웨더는 글러브를 바꿨고 복싱계에서 가장 뛰어난 두 명의 컷맨 중 하나인 로버트 가르시아 할배 아래 손깨짐을 기대하는 건 글쎄...난 회의적이다. e. 그다음 또 뭐더라, 맥그리거의 럭키 펀치를 기대하는 사람들도 있는데 내가 아니라 후안 마뉴엘 마르케스의 스승 나초 베리스타인이 여기에 대해 좋은 말을 남겼다.
