에.. 옛날에는 남자가 부인을 둘 이상 두는게 드물지 않은 일이었다는거 다들 아시겠지만... 이 첩과 본처의 관계라는게 물과 기름처럼 도저히 섞이지 못하는 가정이 있는가 하면, 어느쪽이 본처인지 모를만큼 사이가 좋은 가정도 있단 말이지요. 그래서 예전의 가장이란 이런 본처와 첩의 관계를 잘 다루고 가정을 편안히 이끌수록 덕이 높다 하여 사람들에게 좋은 인상을 심어주었다. 이 말입니다. 지방에서 작은 벼슬을 하나 두었던 박가놈은, 조촐하다면 조촐한 살림살이를 꾸렸으니 본처와 첩 부인이 둘인 두집살림을 하고 있었는데 벼슬이 변변찮다보니 여느 대감들마냥 널찍한 집에서 하인을 데리고 살기엔 곳간 사정이 영 좋지 않았습니다. 어쩔 수 없이 길 건너에 첩의 집을 작게 얻어주고, 자신은 그때그때 첩과 본가를 오가며 두집살림을 했는데 이게 의외로 참 괜찮았단 말이죠. 서로 매일 얼굴을 볼 필요가 없는 본처와 첩이다 보니 딱히 사이가 나빠질 필요도 없고, 본처 입장에서는 가끔 남편이 첩의 집에 출타를 가면 자유로운 기분으로 남편 몰래 이런저런 재미를 보기도 좋았으니 이런게 상부상조가 아닌가 싶습니다. 그렇게 드문드문 이집 저집 오가며 지내던 중, 오늘처럼 우중충하게 비가 내리던 날에 새까만 어둠이 땅 밑에 내리고 본처는 초에 불을 붙이며 넌지시 남편에게 말합니다. "대감, 오늘 날씨가 이리 궂고 비바람이 부니 길 건너에 홀로 사는 저 아이가 걱정입니다." "허허, 부인께서 참으로 마음이 고우시구려." "아닙니다. 이 집에는 그래도 머슴들도 있고 초도 많아 사람의 온기가 남아 있다만은 그 집은 초도 많지 않을 것이요, 홀로 차가운 방바닥에 앉아 있어야 하니 어찌 마음이 편하겠습니까." "부인 말씀이 일리가 있구려.." 남편에게 굳이 첩의 걱정까지 하는 본부인. 여기까지 본다면 마음이 고와도 이리 고운 사람이 없겠다 싶겠습니다만은, 사실은 그렇지가 않습니다. 이 집에는 종놈이 둘 있었는데 그 중 한놈이 갓 지방에서 올라온 사내. 나이도 스물 초입에 몸이 다부지고 건장하여 무슨 일을 시켜도 남의 두세배는 하는 아이가 식솔로 있었습니다. 하루는 남편이 첩에게 출타 한 밤, 혈기왕성한 스물 초입의 종놈이 뒷간 근처에서 홀로 넘치는 욕정을 해소하랴 스스로 오입질을 하는 것을 우연히 목격한 부인은 그 뒤로 그걸 구실삼아 남편이 없는 날이면 이 젊은 사내의 몸을 좋을대로 희롱하며 재미를 보는게 큰 낙이 되었던 것이지요. 이미 벼슬아치랍시고 글만 읽고 나이만 먹어가는 남편보다야, 힘있고 튼튼한데다 자기 말에는 껌뻑 죽어야 하는 머슴은 부인에게 정말 좋은 장난감이 아니겠습니까. "그래서 말씀입니다. 오늘처럼 날씨가 궂은 날에는 예 계시지 마시고 첩의 집으로 가셔서 외로움을 달래어 주시는게 어떠하시겠습니까." 본 부인의 속내도 모르고 남편은 그 말에 크게 감동하였습니다. 그러나 아무래도 늦은 저녁 이런 이야기를 덜컥 그러마고 하자니 부인이 서운해 할 것 같아 한번정도 헛기침을 하며 슬그머니 튕겨보지요. "부인의 말씀이 백번 옳소. 허나 이리 늦은 밤 첩의 처소에 가려면 종도 데려가야 하고 등불도 붙여야 하니 오늘은 안타깝지만 홀로 보내게 하고 내 나중에 따뜻하고 두툼한 명주 이불이라도 하나 해다 주면 어떻겠소?" 그러나 부인은 절대 물러날 수가 없지요. 이미 머리속은 탄탄한 젊은 아이로 가득찼으니, 한사코 남편을 설득합니다. 결국 남편은 종놈에게 나갈 채비를 시키고는 집을 나섭니다. 추적추적 비 내리는 밤거리를 종놈이 든 호롱불 하나에 의지하며 가려니 그리 멀지 않은 길도 평소와는 달리 시간이 한참 걸렸지요. 겨우 첩의 집에 도착하니 이미 방 안에 불빛하나 새어나오지 않아 조금 시끄럽다 싶게 문을 두드립니다. "이리오너라!" 잠시 후, 옷매무새도 제대로 훔치지 못한 첩이 문을 열며 남편을 맞이합니다. "어머, 대감님께서 이리 늦은 시간에 어찌 소녀의 집에.." "내 오늘처럼 날씨가 궂은날 아무래도 자네를 혼자 재우는 것이 마음에 걸려서 말일세." "하오나 부인께서는..." "안그래도 부인또한 홀로 있는 자네를 걱정하여 흔쾌히 나를 보낸 것이니, 자 어서 들어가시게." 그러나 첩은 크게 감동한듯 눈물이 그렁그렁 해졌으나, 이내 표정을 굳게 다물며. "대감의 따뜻하고 넓은 아량에 소녀는 오늘 또 큰 사랑을 느끼나이다. 허나 그렇다고 부인께서 그리 말씀하셨는데 제가 예서 대감을 모신다면 그것 또한 부인을 볼 낯이 없고, 세상 사람들 또한 젊은 요부가 경우가 없고 가벼우다고 여김이 두렵습니다. 그러니 오늘은 모쪼록, 부인께 돌아가 주시지요." 이에 대감은 탄복하며, "허어. 내게 부인이 둘 있건만 이리도 서로를 생각하니 내가 이번 생에 큰 복을 얻었구려. 그치만 예까지 왔으니.." "아닙니다 대감. 오늘 비록 마음이 허하고 아쉬움이 남을지언정, 대감의 명성에 누가 되는것만 하겠습니까. 부디 소첩의 마음을 헤아려 주소서." 하고 냉정하게 대감을 밀어낸다 이말입니다. 대감은 결국, '돌쇠야, 초에 불을 붙이거라'하고는 다시 본가를 향해 먼 발걸음을 돌립니다. 돌쇠는 들릴 듯 말듯, '그러게 불알 두짝이라고 여자를 둘이나 데리고 사니 이 고생을 하는거 아니겠수.' 하며 투덜대었습니다만, 주인대감은 아는 듯 모르는듯 늦은 밤 비로 축축해진 거리를 걸어 되돌아 갔지요. 한편 부인은 이때다 싶어 한창 젊은 종놈을 데리고 놀고 있었는데, 새벽이 채 오기도 전에 남편이 대문을 두드립니다. 대문을 두들기는 소리에 크게 놀라 경기를 일으킬 뻔 한 가슴을 쓸어내리며, 부리나케 옷섬을 여미고는 종놈을 급히 숨깁니다. 신발도 채 제대로 신지 않고 뛰어 나가니 출타하던 차림 그대로 대감이 돌아와 있습니다. 초롱불에 본인의 홍조 띈 얼굴이 들킬까 염려되어 얼른 '초가 아까우니 불을 끄거라'며 돌쇠를 타박하고는 대감께 조심스레 여쭙니다. "첩의 처소로 가시지 않으셨습니까?" "허허, 갔지요. 헌데 부인이 첩을 생각하는 마음을 듣고는 도저히 나를 재워주지 않겠다 하잖소. 부인의 마음씀씀이가 너무 고와 이렇게 넙죽 받았다가는 큰 실례를 하는 것이라며 극구 날 돌려보내더구려." 부인은 뒤통수를 쿵 맞은 것 마냥 짜증이 벌컥 솟아올랐지만, 이내 침착하게 대감을 타이릅니다. 속으로 필터링 없는 마음을 이야기하자면, '이년이 두집살림하면서 뭔 예의를 차리고 지가 영의정이야 좌의정이야 주면 주는대로 받아먹지 정말 별걸 다 따지네'정도가 아니었을까 싶습니다. 그치만 차마 국가의녹봉을 먹는 자의 아내가 그럴 수는 없어 최대한 마음을 진정시키며 차분히 이야기를 합니다. "대감, 허나 여전히 하늘이 요동치고 첩의 아이는 지금쯤 돌아가버린 당신을 그리워하고 있을겝니다. 모름지기 여인이란 두세번은 아니라고 말 할 수 밖에 없음을 잘 아시면서 어찌 그리 쉬이 돌아오십니까." "허어.. 그러나.." "저 또한 본부인으로서 제 곁에 있어주신다면야 더할나위 없이 좋겠습니다만, 어찌 제 욕심만 차려 생색을 내겠나이까. 대감께서는 어서 첩의 처소로 돌아가시어, 지금이라도 후회하고 있을 아이를 어루만져 주시옵소서." 대감은 부인의 말에 결국 '얘야, 다시 불 붙이거라'하고는 집을 돌아 나섭니다. 부인은 거리 끝으로 호롱불이 안보이자 대문을 더 단단히 걸어잠그고는 재빨리 방으로 들어가지요. 아무리 자기 남편이라지만 참 유약하고 줏대도 없고.. 오늘따라 장농에서 꺼낸 기운찬 이 장난감이 더더욱 맘에 드는 이유가 있는거였습니다. 가란다고 가고, 오란다고 오고. 저런게 남자랍시고.. 라는 생각이 드는게 어쩔 수 없는 것이지요. 그에비해 이 앞에 둔 녀석은 그야말로 수컷의 화신과도 같으니 비교되는게 어쩔 수 없지 않습니까. 터벅터벅 대감이 다시 첩의 집에 도착해 첩을 부르니, 첩은 이번엔 문 조차 열어주지 않으며 "대감께서 어찌 제 마음을 몰라주시옵고 다시오셨나이까. 소녀는 도저히 오늘 대감 곁에 있을 수 없사오니, 부디 이해해 주시옵소서" 아까보다 더 단호히 대감을 밀어냅니다. 대감은 이 먼 거리를 또 돌아가야 한다는 생각에 첩을 설득해 보지만 본래 젊은 여자의 고집이 어디 쉬이 꺾이겠습니까. 결국 다시 초롱불을 붙이고 쭐래쭐래 집으로 돌아갑니다. 겨우 집에 돌아가니 대문이 단단히 잠겨있어 쿵쿵쿵 두드려봐도 아무도 나와보지 않는것이, 이내 깊게 잠이 들었을 시간이다 싶었지요. 내심 부인이 아니라면 종놈이라도 나와봐야 하거늘 대감을 밖에 세워두는 것이 기분이 언짢아 나중에 이 일을 꼭 물을것이다 하고 마음을 먹습니다. 허나 그 둘이 지금 세상모르고 엎치락 뒤치락 하고 있음은 꿈에도 모르는 것이지요. "거 참. 밤새 이게 무슨꼴인가.. 길바닥에서 자게 생겼구나. 안되겠다. 다시 첩의 처소로 가자꾸나. 이번엔 무조건 첩의 집에 들어가야겠다. 어서 등에 초를 붙이거라." 하고 지친목소리로 대감은 터벅터벅 걸음을 옮깁니다. 그러자 종놈은 낄낄 웃으며 말하지요. "아이고 대감. 뭐하러 초를 켜십니까?" "뭐라?" 히히덕대는 돌쇠의 말에 발끈,하고 노여워 하는 대감을 보며 돌쇠는 피식 웃으며 말하지요. "이미... 해가 뜨고 있지 않습니까" 결국 두집살림을 차리던 대감은 밤새 잠도 못자고 애꿎은 발걸음만 돌고 돌아 아침을 맞이했답니다. 자기 부인관리도 똑바로 못하면서 두집살림 하려는 사람의 말로..같은거지요. 이 이야기처럼, 옛날이나 지금이나 사람은 참 똑같다고 생각되는게 지금도 여전히 동시에 몇 이성을 마음에 두는 복잡한 치정관계는 우리 주변에서 흔히 벌어지는 일상이지요. 제 친구 또한 그런 놈이 하나 있었습니다. 한 여자와는 몸을 섞고 매일 같이 만나면서 또 다른 여자에게 마음을 주고 싶어 핸드폰까지 두개를 준비했던 친구. 위 이야기처럼 두 여자를 다 갖고싶어했던 이 친구는 어떻게 되었을까요? 처음에는 꽤 괜찮았습니다. 철저하게 두 사람의 교차점을 없애며 잘 만나고 있었지요. 한동안은 얼굴이 반질반질한게 얼마나 좋아보이던지, 저래서 두집살림을 차리나 싶더군요. 뭐, 그렇지만 사람이 어디 완벽하겠습니까? 상상도 못한데서 뒤통수를 맞게 됩니다. 알고보니, 자신이 매일같이 살을 맞대던 여자에겐 다른 남자가 있었고, 자기가 매일같이 마음을 주려 들이댔던 여자는 일종의 꽃뱀과 였던 거지요. 결국 첫번째 여자가 자신에게 점점 소원해 지는 것을 느끼며, 이제는 두번째 여자뿐이라고 자기가 갖고있는 많은 것들을 주며 마음을 얻으려 애써보지만, 이 여자가 또 참 사람을 알쏭달쏭하게 합니다. 먼저 팔짱을 껴오고 술을 홀짝거리며 옆에 붙어 귓볼을 만지작 거린다거나 하며 유혹하고는, 막상 얼굴을 들이밀면 요리조리 쓱쓱 피해갔단 말이죠. 사귀는것도아니고, 그런데 또 남인것도 아니고. 당사자 입장에선 속이 얼마나 타들어갔겠습니까. 그 와중에 첫번째여자는 이런 속타는 마음을 대신 풀기위한 대상이기도 했으니 여전히 그럴싸한 커플연기를 하며 살을 부비댔던것이죠. 내가더 잘할게 내가더 잘할게 하며 마음에도 없는 소리를 발악하듯 지껄여댔지요. 그러다 하루는, 첫번째 여자가 이 남자의 바람을 알고서 다신 만나지 말자는 선고를 합니다. 지도 바람피느라 정신없었으니 '기회다!'싶었겠지요. 그래서 이 남자, 아직 두번째 여자가 자기 손에 들어오지 않았으니 어떻게라도 첫번째 여자를 좀 더 데리고 있으려 그 집 앞에까지 가 미안하다며 잠깐만 사과할 기회를 달라며 서성입니다. 보통같았으면 애달플법도한데, 이 여자는 그새 만나던 다른 남자와 신나게 통화하며 또 다른 로맨스를 즐기고 있었으니 그런 모습이 눈에 들어올 리가 없지요. 그런데 때마침, 두번째 여자에게서 오늘 자기 집이 빈다는 연락이옵니다. 기회다 싶었으나 사과하러 여기까지 온 이상 어떻게 휙 돌아가겠어요. 그치만 마음속에선 이미 커다란 욕망이 계속된 상상의 연쇄반응을 불러일으켰고, 결국 막차없는 시간에 할증붙은 택시를 타고 무려 한강을 건너가며 두번째 여자를 만나러 떠납니다. 허, 근데 막상 도착하니 이 여자. 집이 비었다더니 자기 룸메이트가 안들어온다고 하고는 어찌저찌 상황이 바뀌어 들어왔다는겁니다. 크나큰 아쉬움에 볼멘 소리를 해보지만 뭐 어쩌겠습니까. 어쩔까 하다가 결국 또 택시를 타고 강남에서 강북으로 돌아가는 거지요. 다시 첫번째 여자네 집에 가서 나올때까지 기다리고 있겠노라고 이야기를 합니다. 빌어먹게 여자 다루기 힘드네 하며 투덜대는데 이미 그 집에 그 여자는 있지도 않았어요. 이미 다른 남자와 구름위에서 운우지정을 노니고 있었지요. 그것도 모른채 멍청하게 그 앞에서 동당댔지만 인기척이나 있으려구요. 와 근데 이게 사람을 놀리나. 두번째 여자에게서 또 연락이 옵니다. '오빠 지금 룸메 나갔어요 오늘 안들어온대요.' 그 말에 또 이 멍청한놈은 좋다고 발발발 택시타고 달려갑니다. 하룻밤에 나가는 택시비만 얼마가 드나 싶을정도였죠. 이거 뭐 발정난 개 이야기 같네요 쓰다보니. 근데 뭐 실제로 좀 강력한 놈이긴 합니다. 음. 어쨌거나, 다시 강을 건너 두번째 여자네로 갑니다. 여자는 이번에는 집에 아무도 없다며 흔쾌히 집으로 들여보내주지요. 아자 성공이다 하며 들어가는데 아뿔싸. 지갑에 콘돔이 다 떨어진겁니다. 근처에 편의점이 없어서 결국 잠깐 편의점을 들렸다 오겠다며 일단 집을 나오지요. 그리고, 그게 이야기의 결말을 가져옵니다. 기껏 동네를 이잡듯이 뒤져 겨우 콘돔을 샀는데, 아니 이 여자. 갑자기 연락이 안됩니다. 문을 쿵쿵 두들겨도 소식이 없어요. 무슨일인가 싶어 계속 전화를 거는데 전화도 안받고. 대체 이게 무슨경우인가 싶어 짜증이 폭발할락 말락 하며 전화를 스무번쯤 했을까, 그때 겨우 연락이 닿습니다. '친구가 남자 만나러 나갔는데 이 새벽에 차여서 어쩔 수 없이 데리러 나왔어요.. 미안해요 진짜..' 겨우겨우 웃음을 가장하며 괜찮다고 했지만 괜찮긴 개뿔. 손에 쥔 콘돔박스가 괜히 사람을 더 열받게 하는거지요. 짜증나서 집이나 가야겠다 하고 택시를 잡으려하니 택시도 잡히지 않아. 근데 앞에 붕-하고 큰 차가 지나갑니다. 버스 첫 차 움직일 시간이 되버린 거지요. 택시 탈 필요도 없어졌군요. 이미 해가 뜨기 시작한겁니다. 그렇게 집에 돌아와 한숨 자니 이번엔 두번째 여자에게서 문자 한통이 남겨져있습니다. 앞으로 연락안했으면 좋겠다며. 어안이 벙벙해져서 연락해보지만 당연히 받지 않죠. 나중에 알고봤더니, 친구가 남자만나러 갔다 차인게 아니고 본인이 괜찮게 여기던 남자들 중 한명이랑 썸좀 타보러 나간거였고, 자기는 수많은 후보자중에서 낙오된 것이었지요. 괜히 방어막만 깨다 죽어버리는 올챙이처럼.. 우리는 그 이야기를 듣고 위로는 커녕 친구에게 갖은 욕을 다 해주며 욕심을 과하게 부리니까 그렇지 달고 나온게 하난데 어떻게 둘 다 갖고싶어하냐며 신나게 갈궜습니다. 예나 지금이나 두집살림 하려는 남자는 어찌 할 수가 없는거죠. 그에게는 비극이지만, 우리에게는 희극인 그런 일이었습니다. 윾씨 선택과 집중이 중요하다 마 그렇다고 볼쓔있겠슙니다. 2017년 사랑이 넘치는 한 해 되세요.
