요새 들어 종종 보였던 표현 중 하나는 늙은 사람들이나 무지한 사람들의 정치적 선택이 나머지 사람들을 괴롭게 한다거나 민주정치를 퇴보시킨다는 주장들이었습니다. 민주주의는 완전히 평등하고, 지식과 계급을 가리지 않는 체제인데도 많은 사람들이 이에 심정적인 공감을 하기도 하였죠. 이에 대해 흥미로운 개념을 하나 소개할까 합니다. 랑시에르의 '불화' 개념과 마르크스 주의의 정치적 주체성 ‘불화’는 랑시에르의 철학에서 중심적인 위치를 차지합니다. ‘불화’는 일정한 언어상황으로, 대화자 중 한 사람이 다른 사람이 말하는 것을 알아들으면서도 알아듣지 못하는 상황입니다. 불화는 하얗다고 말하는 사람과 검다고 말하는 사람 사이의 갈등이 아니라 하얗다고 말하는 사람과 하얗다고 말하는 사람 사이의, 상대방이 하양이라는 이름 아래 같은 것을 말하고 있는지 전혀 알아듣지 못하는 사람들 사이의 갈등이라고 할 수 있습니다. 그러므로 ‘불화’는 단순히 ‘허위의식’이나 ‘몰인식’을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 개념의 부정확성에 의한 오해 역시 아닙니다. 개념의 사전적 정의를 더욱 정교하게 만들거나, 그것을 가르친다고 해결되는 문제가 아니라는 거죠. 따라서 랑시에르의 해결책 역시 흥미롭습니다. 랑시에르는 ‘불화’를 해결하기 위해 ‘말하는 것이 의미하는 것이 무엇인지’ 배울 필요가 없다고 이야기 합니다. 이러한 해결책은 독점된 지식과 그것의 이면으로서 몰인식이라는 이분법을 유지하고 있으니까요. 불화는 같은 단어로 같은 것을 알아들으면서도 알아듣지 못하는 상황입니다. 타자가 자신에게 말하는 것을 명료하게 알아들으면서도 타자가 말하는 대상을 보지 못하기 때문에 발생하는 것이지요. 바로 이러한 상황으로부터 ‘정치’가 발생합니다. 플라톤의 『국가』로부터 정치철학의 핵심적 대상은 ‘각자에게 마땅히 돌아가야 할 몫을 주는 것’이라는 정의의 정의(definition)에 대한 ‘불화’입니다. 상인과 농민, 광부와 장인이 정의에 대해 서로 다른 이야기를 하는 것은 오해 때문이 아니라 거기에 불화가 존재하기 때문입니다. 어디에 차별을 두는 것이 옳은지, 또는 어디를 평등하게 하는 것이 옳은지가 정치에 대한 ‘불화’를 구성합니다. 그리고 이러한 ‘불화’, 즉 정치의 고유한 모순이 정치철학의 대상입니다. 철학은 정치로부터 불화를 제거하고 명료하게 만드는 것, 정치의 진정한 본질을 실현하려는 기획으로서 등장했습니다. 랑시에르는 이것을 플라톤으로부터 이어져 내려오는 ‘아르케의 정치’라고 부릅니다. 예를 들어 고대 그리스는 시민과 노예의 구분을 통해 정치의 ‘불화’를 해결하려고 했습니다. 시민은 자신의 무장을 갖출 수 있는 유산자였고, 폴리스를 방어하는데 참여하면서 정치에 참여할 권리를 얻을 수 있었습니다. 플라톤은 철학자야 말로 정치에 참여할 자격이 있는 자이며, 그것을 통해 ‘각자에게 돌아갈 몫’을 결정하려고 했습니다. 근대의 시작과 함께한 부르주아 민주주의는 유산자들의 민주주의였습니다. 생업으로부터 자유로울 수 있는 사람들이야 말로 정치에 대해 숙고할 수 있다는 것이었고, 이는 고대 그리스에서의 구분과 유사합니다. 어쨌거나 이처럼 민주주의에 수많은 변이형태가 존재하는 것은 정치의 주체란 누구이냐에 대한 ‘불화’, 또는 평등이란 개념에서 유래하는 ‘불화’ 때문입니다. 그리고 여기에서 마르크스주의에 대한 랑시에르의 예리한 비판을 읽어낼 수 있습니다. 통설적으로, 마르크스주의는 부르주아 민주주의를 노동자 민주주의로 대체하는 것으로 이해됩니다. 랑시에르가 보기에 마르크스주의의 도식은 정치에 근본적인 아포리아를 제거하려는 것으로서 플라톤의 유사판본이며 역설적으로 정치 자체를 종식시키려는 시도를 의미합니다. 정치의 조건이 곧 ‘불화’이며 이러한 불화 속에서 정치는 운동하기 때문입니다. 불화 자체를 제거하려는 기획은 언제나 反정치의 정치철학에 불과하다는 것입니다. 랑시에르는 ‘몫 없는 이들의 몫’으로서 사회의 대다수를 이루는 이들이 정치적 주체로서 활동하는 것이 곧 민주주의라고 주장합니다. 이것은 정치의 주체로서 ‘자격 있는 자’를 골라내고 지목하는 것이 아닙니다. 민주주의의 근간에 ‘불화’가 있다는 것은 오히려 누구든 데모스가 될 수 있다는 환유적 의미이기 때문입니다. 요약을 해보겠습니다. 정치의 주체가 누구인지를 지목하려는 행위는 민주주의 자체가 가지고 있는 불화를 제거하고 명료하게 하려는 행위이며, 그 결과 민주주의가 소거되는 역설이 발생합니다. 랑시에르의 비판은 암묵적으로 지식인들을 향하고 있습니다. 랑시에르는 지식인들이 과학이나 철학을 통해 선험적인 ‘역사의 주체’(프롤레타리아, 행동하는 시민)등의 개념을 내세우는 것을 비판합니다. 그러나 아르케의 정치가 단지 지식인들만의 것은 아닙니다. 그것은 대중을 지배하는 하나의 정치철학으로서 지대한 영향을 미치고 있기 때문입니다. 지금 광화문에 나가있는 시민들은 자신들이야말로 정당한 자격을 갖춘 자들이며, 이석기나 한상균의 석방을 외치는 자들, 여성혐오의 문제로 탄핵정국의 본질을 흐리는 자들에게 광장에서 떠나라고 말하고 있습니다. 즉, 이미 사람들은 어떤 각자의 기준에서 '저항의 자격'을 이야기 하고 있습니다. 또한 동시에, 이것이 저항의 자격을 따지는 것이 아니라 '우리의 광장'에서만 하지 말라는 것으로 '불화'를 피해갑니다. 그러나 저러한 사안들이 현재의 사회적 상황들과 그것을 결정한 '대의제 민주주의 체제'의 산물 중 몇 가지임을 고려한다면 그들 역시 저항의 자격은 그 장소 그 자리에서 충분히 가지고 있을 것입니다. 여기서 랑시에르의 경로는 난관에 부딪힘니다. 랑시에르는 민주주의의 의미를 더욱 풍부히 하며 민주주의가 더 다양한 방향으로 나아갈 수 있게 해주는 ‘불화’개념을 만들었습니다. 그러나 랑시에르는 저 시민들에게 ‘불화’의 개념을 설명하고 설득할 수 있는 길이 없습니다. 이미 우리는 '불화'의 상태니까요. 문제는 이러한 '불화'의 상태에서는 민주정이 이야기 하는 '대화와 타협의 가치'가 거의 기능할 수 '없다'는 것입니다. 오로지 정치적 결정을 이끄는 힘이 가장 크게 적용되며, 다만 각자의 선에 대한 입장만이 바뀔 뿐이죠. 그런 의미에서 진정한 정치는 ‘배울 수 있는 것’이 아니게 됩니다. 마르크스주의에서 정치란 과학과 운동의 결합입니다. 랑시에르의 개념이 민주주의 정치가 운동할 수 밖에 없는 근본적 모순을 고려하는 것에서 그쳤다면(그리고 그것이 곧 민주주의임에서 멈췄다면) 마르크스주의는 그러한 민주주의적 모순을 만들어내는 운동과 과학(이론)을 통해 해소할 수 있다고 여겼습니다. 민주주의는 불화에 의해 생성된 가치들이 대립하며 이를 결정짓기 위해 주체들의 갈등이 이어집니다. 그러나 우리가 서두에서 말했듯이 어떠한 가치는 힘에 의해 이기더라도 거의 명백하게 사회를 반동적으로 만들며 우리가 겪는 시국이 바로 그러한 결과라고 볼 수 있습니다. 마르크스주의는 따라서 이러한 민주적 운동의 반동가능성을 줄이고 나아가기 위해서는 지식인과 당의 역할이 중요하다고 생각했습니다. 그 결과가 레닌의 전위당 개념이었죠. 레닌의 전위당은 이러한 '민주주의'를 선도하는 차원의 사회주의혁명을 일으켰고, 한때는 성공한 것으로 보였습니다. 그러나 '이끈다'는 개념은 동시에 민주주의와 반대되는 위치에 서게 됩니다. 누군가의 영도는 민주주의 정치의 본질을 부수게 됩니다. 마르크스주의 내에서는 '노동자'라는 계급이 당시의 사회에 있어서 변혁의 주체로서 가장 강력한 역량을 지니고 있었다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 그들의 주체성에는 동시에 정치적 반동가능성이 있었고, 이를 '과학'이라고 이름붙인, 자본주의 이데올로기에서 벗어난 지식인과 영도의 책임을 맡은 당이 이끌어야 한다고 생각했으며 이것이 곧 프롤레타리아 민주주의가 온전한 민주주의에서 벗어나게 만들었습니다. 그리고 결국, 소련은 실패했습니다. 그것이 레닌의 실패인지는 말할 수 없지만, 결국엔 그렇게 되어버렸죠. 이러한 방식의 가장 위험한 부분은, 과거에는 노동자계급인 그리고 지금에는 '시민'으로 통칭되는 주체들의 정치적 의식이 하위의식이었다고 규정했다는 점입니다. 즉, 그들의 자발적인 운동방식과 정치적 불화의 지속이 사회를 발전적으로 나아가게 할 수 없다는 생각이었죠. 그러나 후기의 마르크스주의자인 알튀세르는 이러한 함정을 겪은 마르크스주의의 위기, 과학과 운동이 괴리되고 정치적인 무능력을 드러내게 된 이유가 바로 이 하위의식으로의 규정때문이라고 얘기합니다. 과거의 마르크스주의가 민주주의를 단순히 철폐해야 할 것으로 여기며 민주주의의 제도와 이데올로기들이 갖는 효과를 무시했던 것이지요. 따라서 알튀세르는 대중의 이데올로기는 단순한 허위의식이 아니라, 그들을 실제로 추동하고 있는 현실적인 모순으로서 바라볼 필요가 있다고 주장합니다. 이는 랑시에르의 불화와 언뜻 비슷한 것처럼 보입니다. 랑시에르의 불화는 진리와 정치를 결합하려는 시도가 민주주의를 억압하는 것임을 밝히는 시도였다면, 알튀세르의 이데올로기론은 그러한 '불화'가 진리와 우연히 결합하게 된 것에 대한 이론화의 시도에 가깝습니다. 언제나 우연적일 수 밖에 없었던 '진리의 정치'를 우리가 선택할 수 있기를 바랬던 것이죠. 그리고 그것이 마르크스주의 내에서 사회적 변혁가능성을 가장 많이 갖고 있는 최대 다수인 '노동자'이자, 현재의 '시민'에게 지식인이 해야만 하는 과업이었던 것입니다. 이끄는 것이 아니라, 그들이 선택할 수 있게끔 그들의 행동 바탕에 이어질 이데올로기를 구성하는 것이요. 그리고 이것이 바로 과학과 정치, 운동을 분리적으로 만들지 않고 특정한 '저항의 자격'을 담지한 지식인이나 깨우친 사람들에게서서부터 그렇지 못했던 가장 무지한 사람에게 까지 같은 자격으로 함께 운동할 수 있는 정치적 토대를 만드는 하나의 방법일 것입니다. 그렇다면 마르크스 주의에서 랑시에르적 '불화'의 주체들에 대해 어떻게 억압없이, 영도 없이 '진리의 정치'를 스스로 찾아나가고자 하는 주체들로 만들 수 있을까요. 언뜻 생각하기에 그것은 불가능해 보입니다. 그러나 알튀세르는 이러한 것에 대해 다소 이상적일 지라도, 마르크스주의의 기반이 위치한 유물론적 사고를 통해 방법을 찾습니다. 그는 과학이란 어떠한 인식론적 절단 안에서만 유효하며, 그것은 어떠한 상황이나 시기의 변화에 따라 힘을 잃는다는 것을 알았습니다. 또한 과학적 인식으로서의 진리는 절단에 의해 비가역적으로 생산되면서도 동시에 비가역성 자체가 진리의 유효성을 보증하지는 않는다고 했죠. 진리의 유효성은 결국 이데올로기 영역에서 이론적 투쟁의 과정을 통해 더 유효해지거나 유효성을 잃어가거나 하였습니다. 즉, 과학적 지식은 이데올로기의 위협에 언제나 노출되어 있고, 따라서 마르크스주의 지식인, 혹은 지식인들은 유물론적 철학이 매 순간 관념론적 경향들을 패배시키고 '진리효과'를 정세적으로 만들어 나가야만 과학적 지식과 진리효과가 지속적으로 생산되며 이것이 이데올로기를 변화시켜 나간다고 생각했습니다. 그리고 그 이데올로기가 변화해가는 순간이 바로 정치적 주체들이 진리의 정치를 실현할 수 있는 행동양식을 갖추게 되는 순간이 되는 것이죠. 이렇게 본다면 알튀세르가 이야기 했던 말이 이해가 될 것입니다. [나는 지성의 회의주의와 의지의 낙관주의라는 그람시가 인용한 소렐의 말에 결코 찬성하지 않는다. 나는 역사에서 의지주의를 믿지 않는다. 그 대신 나는 지성의 명철함을 믿으며, 또 지성에 대한 대중운동들의 우위를 믿는다. 이러한 우위 덕분에 지성은 대중운동들과 함께하며, 나아가 무엇보다도 대중운동들이 지나간 과오들을 다시 범하는 것을 막을 수 있는 것이다. 어쨌든 대중운동들이 역사의 진행방향을 바꾸는 것을 지성이 돕는다는 약간의 희망을 품을 수 있다면, 그것은 이 점에서 그렇고 또 이 점에서 그럴 뿐이다.] 즉, 지성이 역사의 진행방향을 바꾸는 것은 기존의 전위와 영도가 아니라, 대중운동과 함께하며 동시에 이데올로기를 움직이기 위한 진리효과를 부지런히 만드는 것 만이 우리가 할 수 있는 것이라는 것이었죠. 시국이 시국이니 만큼 많은 사람들이 저항을 위해 거리로 나왔습니다. 그러나 같은 것에 대해 저항하는 것 같으면서도 동시에 우리는 다른 조건들과 다른 목적을 위해 같은 대상에게 저항하는 것일수도 있습니다. 우리가 심정적으로 그러할 지라도 민주주의가 '저항의 자격'을 담지한 자들에게만 부여되는 체제가 아님을 알듯이, 우리는 그 장소와 그 공간안에서 벌어지는 '불화'를 그저 찍어누르려고 해서는 안된다는 생각이 듭니다. 결국 우리는 우리가 옳다는 정치를 위해 지속적으로 정세적 진리효과를 퍼뜨려야하며, 그러한 효과들이 새로운 이데올로기의 변화를 가져올 것입니다. 결국 우리는 시민이지만 동시에 불화의 주체이며, 그리고 진리의 정치를 실현할 주체이기도 하기 때문입니다. 우리가 '불화'를 인식하고, 동시에 '진리의 정치'를 인식하는 순간 우리는 새로운 주체성을 지닌 시민으로서 발돋움하는 셈입니다. 이제 우리가 해야할 것은 자명합니다. 불화의 아래에서 힘을 쫒는 현실속에서도, 이 사회와 상황을 만들어내는 구조와 이데올로기, 정치체제와 삶을 둘러싼 생산조건과 권력관계의 바깥에 무엇이 있는지를 보아야 합니다. 그리고 누가 그곳에서 이야기를 하고 있는지 들어보아야 합니다. 그것이 과학적인 진리나 지식이 아닐수도 있습니다. 하지만 불화 내에서 일어나는 정치적 반복, 의회민주주의와 정당간의 정치공학과 같은 갈등 바깥에도 새로운 정치적 행동의 바탕이 될 지식을 접하고 새로운 대안정치와 대안체제를 고민하는 '변혁적 시민들'만이 이 시국의, 이러한 정치적 비극의, 사람들을 괴롭게 하는 많은 모순이 내재된 이 체제를 더 나은방향으로 나아가게 할 수 있을 것입니다. 현재의 이데올로기를 점거하고 있는 법과 정치를 넘어서, 새로운 대안과 장기적 비전을 찾아 뛰는 것입니다. 그것이 바로 민주주의가 진리의 정치와 함께 가는 것이며 비로소 여기가 로두스인 셈입니다.
