12. 꽤 시간이 지나 내가 고등학교에 진학할 떄가 되었다. 중학교 시절동안 고모와는 이런저런 일들이 많았는데 앞서 얘기했던 것들처럼 다소 고모가 힘든 모습 그리고 철없던 내 모습 그로인해 별로 좋은 모습이라고 하기 힘든 일들도 많았지만 한편으론 고모와 함께 외식을 나가기도 했고 내가 열이 너무 심하게 나 아파서 집에서 쓰러져 있던 나를 고모가 발견하여 병원으로 데려다주었던 일도 있었다. 고모와 함께 했던 기억은 내 사춘기로 인한 고모와의 트러블과 고모의 정신적인 문제로 인한 기억도 강하게 남아있지만 한편으론 고모와 친하게 지낸 기억들 역시 많이 남아있었다. (이런저런 일화들이 정말 많다. 가령 고모가 자주 듣던 인터넷라디오방송이 있었는데 그 DJ와 친하게 지내게 되면서 이것저것 사연도 보내고 많은 이야기를 나누었는데 나 역시 그걸 옆에서 지켜보면서 함께 듣고봤었다. 그 DJ의 구애덕분에 고모와 잠시 만난적이 있었지만 결국 고모가 먼저 자신의 정신적인 문제를 이유로 거리를 두면서 끝나고 말았다.) 그렇게 중학생이었던 나는 고등학교로 진학하게 되었고 미처 쓰지 않았지만 그 사이 우리는 낡았던 빌라가 재개발이 되어 잠시 다른곳(이라고 하지만 같은 동네였다)에 있다가 다시 재개발이 된 조그만한 아파트로 돌아오게 되었다. 그냥 이름만 바뀌었을 뿐 원래 집으로 돌아오게 되었는 데 그게 딱 고등학교에 입학할떄였다. 그떄쯤 고모는 다니던 직장을 결국 그만두고 말았다. 그때 당시엔 또 그냥 적응을 못했나보다 생각했었지만 이후 그 외삼촌(내겐 할아버지뻘)되는 사람이 어떤 사람인지를 알고나서는 차라리 그냥 그만두는 게 맞았던거 같다고 지금은 생각한다. 어머니는 고모에게 나의 고등학교 진학에 대한 얘기와 함께 이것저것 얘기를 나누면서 예전과 다를바 없이 대해주었다. 사실 뭐 예쩐과 다르고 자시고 그리 오래 떨어져있던 것도 아니었고 고모 역시 딱히 다시 적응할 것도 없기도 햇다. 그리고 내 기억속에서는 아마 이떄 잠시가 (집 문제라던가 기타 문제가 없어서) 모든 것에 있어 가장 편했던 때였던거 같다 나와 고모를 포함한 가족 모두에게 13. 그 날의 기억 역시 나는 결코 잊을 수 없다. 그리고 그 날의 기억이야말로 내 인생에 있어 가장 큰 죄책감과 자괴감 그리고 가장 큰 트라우마로 남는 일일 것이다. 그 날의 기억으로 말미암아 나는 결코 두번다시는 이런 경험은 하고 싶지 않다는 생각을 하게 된다. 어느떄처럼 학교를 마치고 집으로 돌아왔다. 우리집은 나와 부모님 그리고 고모와 할아버지까지 모두 5명이 살고 있었다. (가끔 삼촌이 군대에서 휴가를 나오면 6명이 되었다.) 때문에 집에 모두 있을 경우 5명의 신발(및 구두)와 밖에 편하게 신고 다닐 수 있는 슬리퍼2개까지 모두 7켤레가 줄지어 있었다. 아버지와 어머니는 언제나 아침부터 일하러 나가셨고 (거기에 아버지는 당시 중국에 가 있었던 상황이었다.) 할아버지 역시 언제나 점심이 되기전에 나가시거나 점심을 드시고 나가시는데 그 날은 좀 더 일찍 나가셨다고 한다. 그리하여 본래대로라면 슬리퍼 2개와 고모의 신발 1켤레가 있어야했고 막 집에 도착한 내 신발까지 총 4켤레가 있어야했다. 그러나 집에는 슬리퍼2켤레만이 있을 뿐 아무것도 없었다. 나로써는 당연히 모두들 집에 없는 거라고 생각했다. 다만 한가지 이상했던건 고모가 웬일로 (주말도 아닌데) 외출을 한건가?싶긴 했다. 다만 별로 신경은 쓰지 않았다. 어차피 나간다해도 교회(성당)이었기때문에 일을 끝마치고 나면 돌아올거라 생각했기때문에 딱히 별 생각없이 옷을 갈아입고 컴퓨터를 켰고 여느때처럼 스타크래프트를 키고 있었다. (당시 나는 스타1밖에는 하지 않았다) 다만 이떄 순간적으로 한가지 스쳐지나가는 것이 있었다. 고모의 전조현상.. 그러고보니 그 날 아침 고모의 피부가 다시 좀 변한 상태였으며 그로부터 며칠전쯤에 어머니에게 조금은 뜬금없는 질문을 하였다. 고모는 어머니에게 사후세계를 믿느냐 천국이나 지옥이 있을 것으로 믿느냐와 같은 이야기를 굉장히 진지하게 질문하였고 어머니는 이런 질문에 약간 당황을 하였고 이런저런 대화를 나누었다. 그리고 그 날 어머니는 나에게 고모가 또 힘들어하는 거 같다며 내게 걱정하듯 말하였다. 그랬다 신경쓰지 않을 일이 아니라 무언가 이상하다고 생각해야할 일이었다. 그런 생각이 들고나자 내가 뭘 해야하나?라는 생각을 했다 우선 어머니에게라도 전화를 해서 고모가 집에 없다는 얘길 해야할까? 그떄즘에 어디선가 이상한 소리가 들렸다. 재개발이 된 우리집의 구조는 안방을 기준으로 안방 바로 옆에 빨래를 널어놓는 장소와 창고를 함께 쓸 수 있는 장소가 있었다. 그곳에 사람이 들어가기엔 좁은 공간이었기떄문에 필요한 물건을 나를떄가 아니면 잘 들어가지 않았는데 그쪽에서 소리가 들리기 시작한 것이었다. 나는 순간적으로 무서운 마음이 들었지만 이내 곧 그것이 고모의 목소리인거 같다는 생각이 들었다. "고모? 고모 거기 있어?" 나는 계속해서 고모를 불러보았지만 대답이 없었다. 다만 고모는 무언가 계속 속삭이고 있었다. 그 소리는 누군가와 말싸움을 하는 소리였는 데 정확히 무슨 말을 하는 건진 알수 없었다. 다만 내가 확실하게 아는 건 고모가 정신적으로 힘들떄마다 눈 앞에 악마가 나타나 자신을 위협하는 말과 함꼐 위협한다고 했던 기억이 났다. 난 순간적으로 고모가 고모의 눈에 비친다는 악마와 말싸움을 하고 있는 거라 생각했다. (물론 진짜로 악마 같은 건 없다 다만 고모 눈에 환상으로 나타나 고모를 괴롭혔을 뿐) 나는 고모에게 고모 뭐해?라면서 계속해서 큰소리로 고모를 불러보았지만 고모는 내 말에 그 어떤 대답도 해주지 않았다. 그저 큰소리로 말하는 것으론 안되겠고 고모에게 직접 다가가 얘기를 나누던 방으로 데려가던 해야겠다라고 판단하고 방에서 나온 순간 고모는 창고에서 뛰쳐나와 엄청난 속도로 집밖으로 뛰어나갔다. 나는 전혀 대처하지도 못한 상태에서 고모에게 고모 어디가?하고 소리쳤지만 그 이상의 대처는 할 수 없을 정도로 고모가 너무 빠르게 뛰어갔다. 나 역시 늦게라도 뒤따라 나갔지만 이미 고모의 모습은 집밖에 어디에도 보이지 않았다. 어떻게 해야하지? 라는 순간적으로 정신이 멍해지면서 이 상황을 어찌해야할 지 전혀 감도 못잡고 있었다. 어디로 갔는지 모를 고모를 뒤쫓아가야하나?근데 어디로 갔는질 어떻게 알고 가지? 내가 할 수 있는 게 없었다 결국 일단 이렇게 있을 순 없다는 생각에 급한대로 어머니에게 전화를 걸었다. 전화를 받은 어머니도 크게 걱정하기 시작했지만 어머니라고 별 뾰족한 수가 있을 리 없었다. 어머니 역시 일하러 나가있었기때문에 당장 능동적으로 그 상황을 해결할 방법이 없었다. 그 날 밤 고모는 돌아오지 않았다. 나와 어머니는 이것이 굉장히 심각한 문제라고 판단하였다. 무엇보다 더 큰 문제는 고모는 옷만 입은 채 나갔지 핸드폰이나 지갑같은 것조차 갖고 나가지 않았다는 데 있었다. 우리는 그 날 밤 고모가 집에 오지 않는 것을 보고 그 즉시 경찰에 실종신고를 하였다. 당연히 온 집안이 난리가 났다. 하지만 아무런 방법이 없었다. 온 동네를 다 찾아보았지만 고모를 찾을 수가 없었다. 동네에서 더 이상 찾지 못한다면 우리가 할 수 있는 방법이 없었다. 결국 경찰을 믿는 수밖엔 없었다. 그 사이에도 우리는 혹시나 하는 마음에 고모를 계속해서 찾고 있었지만 모두 허사였다. 그나마 고모가 갈만한 곳이라고 생각했던 동네에서 가장 큰 성당과 가장 사람들이 많이 다니는 교회에 찾아가보았지만 모두 다 허사였다 그렇게 우리는 무기력하게 아무것도 하지 못하고 2주의 시간이 지났지만 고모는 여전히 집에 돌아오지 않았다. 경찰에서도 딱히 연락이 없었고.. 밤에 집에 들어온 할아버지는 결국 눈물을 흘리며 그대로 주저앉아 쓰러지셨고 어머니의 속 역시 새까맣게 타들어갔다. 그저 한시라도 빨리 고모가 돌아오길 바라는 수밖에는 없었던 와중에 좀 더 시간이 지나 경찰에게 연락이 왔다. 14. 할아버지는 떨리는 손으로 경찰이 와달라는 곳으로 갔다. 할아버지 손을 떠는 이유는 경찰에게서 온 연락이 고모를 찾았으니 데려가라는 연락이 아니었기 때문이다. 그 연락은 신원불명의 여성의 시체가 있는 데 신원을 확인하고 가족들을 찾으려해도 찾을 수가 없다는 거였다. 그 와중에 우리의 실종신고가 있어 혹시 모르니 한번 맞는 지 가족이 와서 확인해달라는 거였다. 내가 집으로 돌아와있을 떄는 이미 모든 일이 다 끝나있었다. (위의 얘기 역시 나중에 듣게 된 내용이다.) 그 시체는 고모가 맞았다. 할아버지는 그 자리에서 오열하며 쓰러지셨다고 한다. 목격자의 증언에 따르면 기차철도 위에 고모가 누워있었는 데 보는 사람이 볼 떄 누가봐도 생을 마감하기 위해 하는 행동이라는 걸 알 수 있었다고 한다. 그리고 목격자가 미처 행동할 틈도 없이 모든게 끝나고 말았다고 한다. 해당 목격자의 증언에 따르면 그 일은 고모가 집을 나간 바로 그 다음날이었다. 우리는 그 일에 모두 큰 충격에 빠졌다. 집안에서 그 누구도 말을 꺼내는 사람이 없었다 아무도 말을 할 수 없었다 그렇게 아무도 제대로 몸을 가눌 수 없는 상황에서도 장례식은 치뤄야했다. 그러던 와중에 경찰에게서 다시 할아버지에게 조사할 게 있으니 와달라는 연락이 왔다. 그 조사는 어처구니 없게도 혹여나 보험을 타기 위한 것이 아닐까하여 할아버지를 조사한다는 것이었다. 난 그 말을 듣자마자 미친듯이 소리를 질렀다. 당연하게도 할아버지는 아무런 혐의도 없었다. 아니 혐의라고 하는 거 자체가 웃긴거였다. 고모가 사라진 그 날부터 온 가족이 다 찾아해맸는데 보험을 위한거라니? 난 아직도 그때의 일에는 분노가 치밀어오른다 15. 그렇게 장례식이 치뤄졌고 큰고모와 삼촌 그리고 여러 친척들이 모였다. 아버지는 당시 중국에서의 일떄문에 오질 못했다. 대신 어머니가 아버지에게 전후사정을 모두 전화로 얘기해주었는데 아버지는 한동안 말도 잇지 못하며 울음을 참다가 끝내 그 불쌍한 것을 어떡하느냐라며 오열하였다고 한다. 화장을 치루는 동안 어머니는 슬픈 표정으로 눈물을 흘리셨고 삼촌은 너무도 서럽게 울면서 누나를 외치고 있었다. 나는 외아들이었기때문에 형제가 없어서 형제지간이나 남매지간이 어떠한지를 잘 모르면서 컸었다. 그래서 어린 시절 삼촌이 고모에게 반말을 하고 야라고 부를 떄 그것이 삼촌과 고모가 사이가 나빠서 그런걸로 착각 한 적이 있었다. 그러나 그건 어디까지나 내 착각에 불과했다. 삼촌은 본래 작은고모와 나이차이가 많이 나지 않는데다가 어린시절 할아버지가 시골에서 서울로 올라올떄 두 사람만을 데려와서 함께 키웠기떄문에 그 누구보다 각별했던 사이였다. 각별했던 동기가 먼저 세상을 떠났는 데 어떤 동생이 슬퍼하지 않을까? 큰 고모는 그때 애초에 작은 고모를 시집보내는 게 아니였다면서 울분을 토했다. 바로 그떄의 그 결혼이 작은 고모의 인생을 엇나가게 했다면서 오열하였다. 할머니쪽 친척중 한분이 큰 고모를 위로하기 위해 "어머니 곁으로 가서 편하게 지낼거야 그렇게 생각하자 응?" 그 분은 그렇게밖에는 위로할 방법이 없었지만 그것이 위로가 될 수 있었을 리 없다. 화장이 모두 끝나고 유해를 들고 가는 길에 할아버지는 다시 한 번 더 오열하며 그대로 쓰러지셨다. 자식들중에 가장 이뻐하던 작은 고모가 그리되었으니 무리도 아니였다. 나는 작은 고모가 화장이 되었을 때도 그리고 그 유해를 갖고 갈떄도 눈물이 나오지 않았다. 슬프지 않았기때문이 아니다. 슬픈 감정보다는 죄책감이 나를 더 크게 억누르고 있었다. 내가 그때 만약 고모를 붙잡았다면? 내가 만약 그떄 좀 더 빨리 고모를 찾아 따라나서서 고모를 집으로 데려왔다면? 왜 그러지 않았을까? 내가 왜 그떄 그렇게 안일했을까? 온갖 생각이 나를 집어삼키고 있었다. 삼촌이 오열하고 큰 고모가 오열하는 것을 보고 할아버지가 쓰러지는 것을 보면서 그 죄책감과 자괴감은 더 커져만 갔다. 16. 모든 장례식 절차가 다 끝나고 어느정도 시간이 지났는 데 한 통의 전화가 울렸다. 그 전화는 어머니가 받았고 곧 통화가 조금 길어졌고 마지막에 어머니는 "전화해줘서 고맙다"라는 인사를 건내며 전화통화를 끝냈다. 나는 무슨 전화인지를 어머니에게 물어봤다 그 전화는 작은 고모의 친구에게서 온 전화였다. 고모의 그 친구는 나도 어린시절 만난적이 있었는 데 고모에게 가장 친한 친구로 부산에서 돌아온 뒤 고모에게 연락을 해주는 그리고 고모가 연락하는 유일한 친구였다. 한동안 그 친구는 바빠서 고모에게 연락을 못했었다고 한다. 문제는 고모 역시 전화를 안하니 걱정이 되어서 고모의 핸드폰으로 전화를 했지만 받는 사람이 아무도 없었다고 한다.
