저는 캐나다에 이사와서 살고 있습니다. 여기에 이사 와서 많은 문화 충격을 겪어오고 있습니다. 자동차를 사용함에 있어서도 많은 차이가 있습니다. 예를 들면 기름값이 무척 싸다거나, 자동차에 겨울철 엔진 예열을 위한 전기 코드가 있다거나, 차보다는 사람을 우선하는 운전 문화라던가, 99.99% 셀프 주유 시스템 같은 것이죠. 특히 대부분의 비보호 좌회전 시스템은 적응하는데 많은 시간이 걸렸습니다. 그런데 최근에 미국을 자동차로 여행했었는데요, 거긴 또 캐나다와 다른 문화가 있더군요. 먼저 계량 시스템. 미터법을 쓰는 캐나다와 달리 미국은 자신만의 계량법을 씁니다. 주유소에서 기름을 넣을 때도 갑자기 리터에서 갤런 단위로 바뀌고 속도 단위 또한 순식간에 뒤죽박죽이 됩니다. _about_10.9_miles_north_of_Nevada_State_Route_535_(Idaho_Street)_in_Elko_County,_Nevada.JPG) 이미지 출처 : 구글 이미지 캐나다와 미국에서 공히 볼 수 있는 최고속도 표지판인데요, 넋 놓고 다니다 보면 저는 시속 65 킬로미터로 달리게 됩니다. 갑자기 뒤에서 맹렬한 속도로 – 시속 100 킬로 이상 – 다른 차가 제 똥침을 놓으면 아차 하게 되죠. 그래도 한 일주일 지나니 적응이 되더군요.  이미지 출처 : 구글 이미지 문제는 캐나다에 돌아와선 그 반대의 경험을 하게 됩니다. 제한 속도가 50 이어서 시속 80 킬로로 달리다가 굼벵이처럼 기어가는 앞차를 만나게 되면 아, 여긴 캐나다지! 하고 깨닫게 되는 겁니다. 그래서 부지불식간에 과속을 하게 되는 미국인 방문자를 위해 위 사진과 같은 경고판이 국경에 서있고는 합니다. 오레건주에 도착해서 주유소에 들렸을 때 입니다. 언제나처럼 주유를 하려고 차문을 열고 나섰는데요, 히피풍의 젊은이가 – 헤이, 여기선 그런 식이 아냐. 앉아 계셔. 뭘 원해? 하는 겁니다. 그래서 전 단순히 이 주유소는 풀 서비스인가보다 생각했죠. 그래서 전 - 레귤러, 가득 채워주라. 했죠. 그랬더니 주유구를 제 차에 걸고선 열심히 뒷 유리를 닦아주는 것이었습니다. 그런데 이런 황당한 시츄에이션이 다른 주유소에서도 계속 이어졌죠. 알고 봤더니 미국의 오레건주는 셀프 주유가 불법이었던 것입니다. 참 재밌죠? 미국에서의 주유는 현금가가 대부분 카드가보다 싸다는 겁니다. 그래서 한 푼이라도 아낄려고 현금 주유를 주로 하였습니다. 그런데 미국은 100% 선불 결재가 원칙이더군요. 이게 은근 귀찮습니다. 주유펌프와 주유소 매점은 보통 멀리 떨어져 있는데요, 먼저 매점에 들어가 캐셔에게 돈을 주며 - 펌프 몇 번, 20불 부탁해. 하는 식으로 선불결재를 합니다. 다시 돌아와 펌프를 사용하면 대부분의 경우 지불한 돈 이전에 기름통이 가득 차게 됩니다. 그러면 또다시 먼 거리의 매점에 들러 거스름돈을 돌려받아야 하죠. 캐나다에서도 간혹 현금으로 기름을 넣는데요, 저는 아직까진 선불 거래를 경험한 적이 없습니다. 그냥 펌프를 쓰고 매점에 들러 - 안녕, 나 펌프 몇 번 썼어. 하면 캐셔가 - 응, 오늘 어때? 근데 뭘로 결재할건데? 현금? 카드? 이런 식으로 합니다. 약간 정감 있죠? 그런데 한국이 일본의 트랜드를 뒤쫓듯이 캐나다도 미국의 시스템을 쫓아가는 경향이 있습니다. 캐나다의 주유소도 미국처럼 현금의 경우는 점점 선불 결재 방향으로 간다는 군요. 불경기의 여파인지 기름 넣고 도망가는 경우가 증가하기 때문이겠지요. 지금은 과도기인지 저는 아직 직접 경험한 바는 없습니다만. 변화에는 항상 마찰이 따르죠. 변화가 못마땅했던 한 다혈질 캐나다인이 벌인 흉악한 짓좀 보세요. http://alweekly.ca/bbs/board.php?bo_table=groupA_3&wr_id=221&page=9 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 133 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 146 Warning: Use of undefined constant vote - assumed 'vote' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 161 2

주유소의 크레딧카드와 현금의 Two Tier Pricing은 오래된게 아니예요. 원래 카드회사에서 가맹점을 맺을때 현금과 카드와의 가격을 같게 해야 한다는 조항이 있잖아요. 근데 사람들이 점점 크레딧 카드 사용이 많아지면서 그 조항에 불만을 가진 사람들때문에 그 조항이 불법화되었나 그랬던걸로 알아요. 그래서 현금일 경우에 디스카운트를 해 줄 수 있는데, 5%정도까지 해 줄수 있다고해요.
