 3월의 책 독서모임 3월에 함께 읽으실 책은 F.스콜 피츠제럴드의 위대한 개츠비입니다. 작가의 약력소개를 한 번 찾아보았습니다. 헤밍웨이와 더불어 존스타인벡이 함께 거론되지 않아서 아쉽습니다. F.스콜 피츠제럴드의 위대한 개츠비 미국의 젊은 세대 작가를 대표하는 F. 스콧 피츠제럴드가 1924년에 발표한 『위대한 개츠비』는 아직까지도 가장 미국적인 소설로 일컬어지고 있다. 미국 중서부 지역의 가난한 집안 출신인 개츠비와 상류사회 출신인 데이지는 서로 사랑하지만 데이지는 부유한 톰 뷰캐넌과 결혼하고 만다. 밀매업으로 엄청난 부를 소유하게 된 개츠비는 옛 연인 데이지를 찾기 위해 뉴욕 롱 아일랜드에 대저택을 사들여 매일 밤 호화로운 파티를 열고, 두 사람은 6년 만에 다시 만나 예전의 감정으로 돌아간다. 그러나 데이지의 사랑을 다시 찾으려는 개츠비의 꿈은 데이지 부부의 이기주의에 의해 산산조각 나버리고 개츠비는 비극적인 결말을 맞게 된다. 성공과 부(富), 그리고 사랑을 향한 인간의 욕망과 꿈을 잘 그려낸 이 소설은 개츠비, 데이지, 톰, 조던 그리고 작중 화자인 ‘나’를 통해 당시 미국 젊은 세대의 실상을 보여주는 작품이다. 출처: 교보문고 F.스콜 피츠제럴드: 미국의 소설가이며 단편 작가이다. 양차 세계대전 사이의 시기, 그중에서도 1920년대 화려하고도 향락적인 재즈 시대를 배경으로 무너져 가는 미국의 모습과 ‘로스트제너레이션’의 무절제와 환멸을 그린 작가다. 어니스트 헤밍웨이, 윌리엄 포크너 등과 함께 20세기 초 미국 문학을 대표하는 작가로, 작품과 생애, 스타일 등 모든 면에서 재즈 시대를 대표하는 하나의 아이콘이 된 인물이다. 1896년 9월 24일 미네소타 주 세인트폴에서 태어났다. 프린스턴 대학에 입학했으나 성적 부진으로 자퇴 후, 군에 입대하여 제1차 세계대전에 참전하였다. 1919년 장편소설 『낙원의 이쪽』을 발표하여 큰 성공을 거두었다. 1925년 4월, 피츠제럴드는 장편소설 『위대한 개츠비』를 완성했는데, 1920년대 대공황 이전 호황기를 누리던 미국의 물질 만능주의 속에서 전후의 공허와 환멸로부터 도피하고자 향락에 빠진 로스트제너레이션의 혼란을 예리하게 포착하고 있다. 작품에서 청춘의 욕망과 절망이 절묘하게 묘사되고 있다. 세계적인 명작으로 연극, 영화, 뮤지컬 등 다양한 매체에서 다루고 있다. 헤밍웨이는 “이토록 좋은 작품을 쓸 수 있다면, 앞으로 이보다 더 뛰어난 작품을 얼마든지 쓸 수 있다.”라며 작품에 대해 찬사를 보냈다. T. 어릴때 읽고 영화로 보았던 개츠비는 다시 책을 읽으면서 내가 얼마나 기억력이 안좋구나를
다시한번 떠오르게하고, 또한 소설책을 이미 읽었다 하더라도 10년이 지나서 나중에 다시 한 번
읽어보는 것이 참으로 중요하구나 라는 것을 깨닫게 되었다
지금 다시 본 개츠비는 아주 다른 책이었고 하나하나 등장인물들의 감정선들이 너무나 세세하게
묘사되어서, 형용사로 가득한 (단어실력이 여전히 미천하구나라고 느끼면서 사전을 찾기 바빴지만) 피츠제럴드의 언어의 마술같은 단어선택에 감탄을 하게되었다.

많은 등장인물들의 양면성이 나열되는듯 싶다.
한편, 책은 1925년 출판이 되었다고 하는데, 1929년 대공황 직전의 미국의 흥청되는 물질만능속의
쾌락과 자동차 문화, 부자들의 파티문화에 대한 동경과 그에 대하여 자극적으로 잘 묘사했는 점이 한편의 통속적인 드라마보는 것 같기도 했지만,
닉 캐러웨이의 고민속에서 30대 나이들어가는 인텔리의 사랑 그리고 그의 삶에 대한 고민과 사랑에 대한 배신이 언뜻 작가의 이야기가 아닌가 궁금하기도 했다.
나중에, 작가에 대해서 다시 읽고 나서 찾아보는데,
작가는 아마도 자신을 철저하게 개츠비와 닉 두 등장인물에게 반반씩 나눠서 투영해놓은 것 같다.
작가자신의 어려웠던 어린시절과 소설을 쓰면서 인기작가가 되고 어린시절 군대를가고, 여자친구에게 헤어짐을 겪는 개츠비가 작가의 또 다른 분신이라면,
닉 케러웨이를 통해서, 작가 자신의 사회 통속과 한 발짝 분리시켜서 세상의 혼돈, 쾌락과 돈을 쫓는 톰뷰캐넌, 데이지, 그리고 개츠비에서, 닉은 당신들과 다르다는 인텔리의 외로움과 도덕성을 들어내는 듯 싶기도 한다.
그리고, 책에서도 absolute rose 라고 닉을 묘사하는 이야기가 나오는 걸 보면 닉이야말로 주인공이네 싶다.
반복적인 등장인물들의 심리와 행동을 묘사하는 모든 언어들이 경멸, 비난, 허둥대거나 그렇게 부정적인 묘사들이 가득한데 반해서, 닉 캐러웨이한테는 그런 언어들이 없음에, 비껴난 관조적인 모습이 잠깐 작가가 얼마나 자신에 대해서 관용이 많고 세상에서 현실적이지 않은가? 라는 생각도 슬쩍 들기도 했다.
