50년대 카야의 어린 시절과, 60년말, 바닷가 마을 청년인 마을 킹카 체이스의 시신이 발견된 시점의 배경이 번갈아 가면서 이야기가 전개되는데요.
저는 개인적으로 소설 초반부에서 전개되는 카야의 서바이벌 생존에 대한 이야기가 더 눈길이 갔습니다. 엄마가 집을 떠나고 언니 오빠가 떠나고 믿었던 오빠마저 카야를 버려두고 혼자 가버리고 마지막에는 아버지는 다시 돌아왔지만 어느날 가버리고 습지에 카야 혼자 남아있게 되는데요.

“등불이 깜박이다 희미해지더니 꺼졌다. 1분쯤 부드러운 동그라미의 세계가 머무르다 캄캄한 어둠이 내렸다” 라는 초반부의 암흑같은 습지 집에서 혼자가 된 카야의 모습은 먹먹하게
어두움속에 홀로 남은 어린이의 무서운 미래를 예상하는듯 여운이 오래갔어요.
세상과 단절된 카야를 잘 나타낸 것 같았거든요.
개인적으로는 어릴때 시골 할아버지의 농사짓는 집에서 여름 한 철을 지내면서
등불을 켜고 살았는 그 때, 깜깜했던 단지 부엉이 우는 소리만 들렸는 그 시절로 다시 돌아간듯
완전한 일체감? 시간을 거슬러갔는듯한 느낌이 들었습니다.
만7-8세 꼬마 아이가 혼자서 옥수수 귀리죽 같은 그릿 에 물을 부어서 밥을 해 먹는 모습들
땅을 일구고 야채 씨앗을 심어서 야채를 자라게 하고 빨래를 하는 일상의 모습이
우리 삶의 고단함을 단순하게 묘사했지만 가장 필요한 노동을 신성하게 여기는 듯 싶었어요.
그렇게 루지애나일런지 노스 캐롤리나인지 모르지만 습지 사구체 등의 바다로 이어지는 나무가 많은 습지지역을 연상케하는 장면들에 아마존도 생각나게 하고요.
저는 그렇게 이 책의 전반부는 참으로 좋았는데요. 후반부는 일반적인 미스테리 사랑 서스펜스 등등 그리고 하퍼리의 앵무새 죽이기와 비슷한 전개 - 인종차별, 메인스트림 주류?사회로 묘사되는 동네주민들과 거의 원주민과 비슷한 대접을 받는 카야, 정의란 무엇인지에 대해서는 큰 울림은 없고 헐리우드 영화해버려지는 듯한 소설전개가 살짝은 마음에 들지 않았는데요.
자연, 동물, 생태계 이야기가 소설전체를 이끄는 힘이 되었는 점은 참 마음에 들었습니다.
보통은 소설들이 인간관계나 폭력이나 사건들에 중심이 많이 가는데비해서, 이곳의 주인공은 갈매기일때도 있고 습지의 물결 바람 들이 책 읽는 독자들에게 가까이 다가온 그런 느낌이 들었거든요.
가끔 소재가 다른 일상을 떠나서 여행을 떠난 느낌을 받은 좋은 소설이었던 것 같습니다.
머리 아픈 요즘 현대를 떠나서 50-60년대 문명 vs 문명을 거부하며 혼자 살면서 나중에는 독학으로 문명인이 되지만 여전히 생태학자로 자연속에서 살기는 선택하는 카야는 소설속에서만
존재할 것 같은 인물이지만 한번쯤 우리도 그런 인물이 있다면 만나보고 싶다는 매력적인 캐릭터였습니다.
50년대 카야의 어린 시절과, 60년말, 바닷가 마을 청년인 마을 킹카 체이스의 시신이 발견된 시점의 배경이 번갈아 가면서 이야기가 전개되는데요.
저는 개인적으로 소설 초반부에서 전개되는 카야의 서바이벌 생존에 대한 이야기가 더 눈길이 갔습니다. 엄마가 집을 떠나고 언니 오빠가 떠나고 믿었던 오빠마저 카야를 버려두고 혼자 가버리고 마지막에는 아버지는 다시 돌아왔지만 어느날 가버리고 습지에 카야 혼자 남아있게 되는데요.
“등불이 깜박이다 희미해지더니 꺼졌다. 1분쯤 부드러운 동그라미의 세계가 머무르다 캄캄한 어둠이 내렸다” 라는 초반부의 암흑같은 습지 집에서 혼자가 된 카야의 모습은 먹먹하게
어두움속에 홀로 남은 어린이의 무서운 미래를 예상하는듯 여운이 오래갔어요.
세상과 단절된 카야를 잘 나타낸 것 같았거든요.
개인적으로는 어릴때 시골 할아버지의 농사짓는 집에서 여름 한 철을 지내면서
등불을 켜고 살았는 그 때, 깜깜했던 단지 부엉이 우는 소리만 들렸는 그 시절로 다시 돌아간듯
완전한 일체감? 시간을 거슬러갔는듯한 느낌이 들었습니다.
