요근래 IT 업계는 재택 근무 이야기로 후끈후끈합니다. 얼마전에 라인플러스에서 국외 원격근무 허용을 통해 워케이션을 가능케 함으로써 더욱 더 많이 이야기되고 있습니다. 해외의 몇몇 회사들은 "우리는 코로나 이후에도 영구적으로 재택근무를 선택할 수 있도록 하겠다" 라고 발표하기도 했죠. 저도 그 덕에 약 2년간 재택 근무를 하며 그 덕을 보기도 하고, 재택 근무의 명과 암을 체감하는 기회가 되었습니다. 오늘은 이 이야기를 해보려고 합니다. 코로나의 여파는 실로 대단했습니다. 먼 미래의 이야기만 같던 재택 근무를 현재로 끌어왔으니 말입니다. 재택근무를 대하는 IT 직군 종사자 분들의 의견은 대부분 긍정적이었습니다. 출퇴근에 소요되는 시간을 아낄 수 있어 좋고, 오히려 업무 집중도가 높아졌다, 오히려 삶과 일의 분리를 출퇴근이라는 의식적인 장치로 끊어내지 못하기도 하고 근무 태만으로 의심받을 수 있으니 오히려 일을 더 많이 하게 되는 경향도 있더라 정도의 의견이었습니다. 저도 비슷한 의견이었습니다. 사무실에서는 별 부담없이 가지던 30분 정도의 티타임도 집에서는 어쩐지 양심에 찔리는 기분이었습니다. 휴식 중에 메신저 대화가 왔는데 확인을 못했으면 혹여 근무 태만으로 의심받게 되는 건 아닌가 하는 걱정거리를 더 얹기도 했구요. 그리고 여러 해 반복된 직장생활 덕분에 생긴 생체 퇴근시간 감각 많이 무뎌졌습니다. 정신없이 일을 하다가 배가 고파 시간을 보니 어느새 저녁 시간이 지나있곤 했습니다. 재택 근무의 덕을 제대로 본 사건도 있었습니다. 작년 가을 쯤에 아파트 매매를 하면서 인테리어 공사를 하게 되었는데 그 때문에 한 달 정도 집을 비워야 하는 상황이 있었습니다. 재택 근무가 아니었다면 적지 않은 돈을 들여 회사 출퇴근이 가능한 위치에 거주 시설을 장기로 빌려야 했을 겁니다. 하지만 저는 그냥 고향집에 내려가 버렸습니다. 어디서든 인터넷과 노트북만 있으면 업무가 가능했으니까요. 덕분에 풀내음을 가득 느낄 수 있는, 종종 소똥냄새도 덤으로 맡을 수 있는 자연 친화적인 장소에서 일을 하는 흔치 않은 경험을 할 수 있었습니다. 한창 커가는 아이와 시간을 많이 보낼 수 있는 것도 재택 근무의 큰 장점 중에 하나입니다. 제겐 4살배기 딸아이가 하나 있습니다. 코로나 이전에는 휴식이 필요하면 동료와 티타임을 가지거나 옥상으로 담배타임을 가지러 가곤 했습니다. 하지만 재택 근무 기간 중에는 아이와 시간을 많이 보낼 수 있었습니다. 거실로 나와서 아이와 동요를 틀어놓고 막춤을 추기도 하고, 배꼽이 어딨니, 머리가 어딨니 하며 몸으로 장난을 치기도 했습니다. 물론 제 방문 바깥에서 아빠를 찾는 아이의 울음소리를 애써 외면하며 업무에 다시 집중하는 일은 쉽지 않긴 했습니다. 지겹기만 하던 코로나도 이제 슬슬 끝이 보이는 것 같습니다. 뉴스를 봐도 이젠 실외에서는 마스크를 벗어도 되네 마네 하는 이야기가 나오고 있습니다. 전면 재택 근무를 시행하고 있던 회사들도 다시 이전 근무 체제로 돌아가거나 재택과 출근을 겸하는 하이브리드 체제에 대한 논의를 시작하고 있습니다. 제가 다니고 있는 회사도 주 2~3회 출근의 하이브리드 체제가 될 것이다 라는 소식이 블라인드 피셜로 돌고 있습니다. 바야흐로 길고 길었던 재택 근무의 시간도 끝이 보이는 것 같습니다. 아, 정말로 길고 길었습니다. 재택 근무는 명과 암이 정말 뚜렷합니다. 저는 그 중 "암"을 너무도 절실히 경험했기 때문에 이 재택 근무 기간이 유난히 길고도 길었습니다. [이런 말 하면 동료들은 싫어하겠지만 저는 다같이 출근해서 사무실에서 함께 일하는 풍경을 내심 기다리고 있습니다.] 아니, 꼭 다 안 모여도 좋습니다. 하이브리드 체제로 나올 사람들만 나와서 같이 일하는 것만 해도 좋을 것 같습니다. 그 날을 기다리고 있습니다. 대부분 갸우뚱 하실 테지만 제 나름의 의견을 말씀드려 보겠습니다. [공간은 정신을 지배한다고 합니다.] 얼마전에 당선된 윤 당선인이 하신 말씀이시죠. 대통령의 집무 공간을 용산으로 옮기는 사안에 대한 찬반과는 별개로 저는 그 말만은 전적으로 공감합니다. 저도 공간이 정신을 지배한다고 생각합니다. 아니, 지배까지는 좀 표현이 격한 것도 같으니 공간은 정신에 영향을 (적지 않게) 끼친다 정도로 정정하겠습니다. 영국의 국회의사당의 생김새는 우리나라의 그것과 매우 다릅니다. 선진국의 국회의사당 치고는 매우 비좁기도 하고, 양당이 서로 마주보는 형태로 구성되어 있습니다. 자리에서 일어나 두세걸음 걸으면 상대편에게 닿을 정도로, 그리고 상대방의 구취도 어쩐지 맡을 수 있을 것 같을 정도로 가까운 곳에서 양당의 의원들이 정책적 사안을 가지고 침튀겨가며 싸우는 형태입니다. 2차 세계대전 당시 제대로 폭격을 받은 국회의사당을 재건축하는 과정에서도 일부러 이러한 형태를 고수했다고 합니다. 그러면서 처칠이 명언을 하나 남깁니다. "우리는 건축물을 짓지만, 그 이후로 그것은 우리를 짓습니다." "공간은 정신에 영향을 끼친다" 에서 공간이라는 단어를 환경으로 좀 확대시켜 볼까요. 사람은 확실히 환경에 영향을 받습니다. 받을 수 밖에 없습니다. 사람은 사회적 동물이고 주변 환경과 끊임없이 상호작용해가며 개개인의 자아를 갈고 닦아 나갑니다. 처음부터 완성되어 있는 인간은 없습니다. 우리 모두는 주변의 환경에 나 자신을 비벼가면서 때로는 무두질을, 때로는 광택을 내기도 하면서 나를 완성해나가는 과정에 있습니다. 종종 떠나는 여행을 통해 낯선 여행지에서 우리는 익숙함 속 새로움을 발견하기도 합니다. 템플스테이 같은 환경의 변화를 통해 정신적인 리프레시를 도모하기도 합니다. [우리는 모두 환경에 영향을 받습니다.] 그게 사무실이어도 크게 다를까요. 사무실은 일을 하기 위해 만들어진 공간입니다. 업무에 필요한 부대 시설들이 회사를 통해 세심하게 고려되어 만들어진 공간입니다. 때로는 삭막하기도, 또 숨막히기도 하지만 그 공간으로 사원증을 찍고 들어가는 순간에 [우리는 무의식적으로 자연인에서 직장인으로의 모드 전환을 하게 됩니다.] 저는 사실 재택 근무 기간에도 종종 출근을 하곤 했습니다. 코로나가 극심하여 출근이 아예 금지되는 기간이 있기도 했습니다만 이 때도 저는 집 근처 스터디 까페에서 업무를 하곤 했습니다. (사실 회사 정책 상 이렇게 하면 안되는 일인데 이건 여러분과 저만의 비밀인 걸로 합시다) 요즘은 주 2~3일 정도 사무실로 출근합니다. 회사 엘리베이터에서 내리면서 사무실의 냄새를 맡는 순간에 저는 종종 미생의 한 에피소드를 떠올리기도 했습니다. 기억하시는 분들이 계실지는 모르겠지만 극중 강하늘이 아침 일찍 출근을 하면서 업무 시간 시작 전 커피 한 잔의 여유와 직장인으로써의 충만감을 느끼는 장면이 나옵니다. 저도 비슷한 장면을 겪습니다. 커피를 한 잔 내리고 오늘 할 업무 내용들을 정리하면서 다면적인 제 모습들 가운데 직장인으로서의 자아를 예열시키는 시간을 갖습니다. 충분히 예열된 채로 업무 시간을 맞아 정신없이 하루를 보냅니다. 그러면 집으로 돌아가는 퇴근길에는 일종의 뿌듯함마저 느끼곤 합니다. 재택 근무로는 어쩐지 잘 재현되지 않는 경험입니다. 재택 근무를 선호하지 않는 이유 중 하나는 동료들과의 정서적 거리감에 대한 문제도 있습니다. 일만 하면 되는 회사에서 동료들과 정서적 거리감이 문제가 되냐 하고 반문하는 분들이 계실지도 모르겠습니다. 그게 전혀 문제가 되지 않는 분들도 계실 수 있다는 생각이 들지만 제 경우에는 그렇지 못했습니다. 저는 사실 재택 근무가 한창인 와중에 이직을 경험했습니다. 새로운 회사로의 출근을 안내받고 이틀 정도 출근하긴 했지만 그 이후로는 재택 근무 체제로 들어갔습니다. 이 기간에 신규 입사자가 느끼는 어려움에 대해 이야기를 한 번 해볼까요. 아무리 경력직이라고는 하지만 새로운 회사, 새로운 조직에서 적응하는 일은 쉽지 않습니다. 설령 이전과 동일한 성격의 업무를 한다 하더라도 문화가 다르고, 사람이 다르고, 체계가 다르고, 프로세스가 다르니 회사는 제겐 너무도 낯선 대상일 수 밖에 없습니다. [수습 기간에는 셀 수도 없는 물음표를 머리 위에 띄우고 있습니다.] 이 회사에서는 어떤 방식으로 업무가 진행되는지, 내가 과연 잘 적응하고 있는 건지, 이전 회사와는 다른 이 회사만의 암묵적인 룰은 무언지, 나는 여기서 어떤 역할을 해야 하는지. 시간이 지날 수록 이러한 종류의 혼란스러운 물음표는 계속 늘어나기만 하고, 그 과정에서 자신감마저 잃어가기도 합니다. 이전 회사에서는 그래도 일머리가 있다는 평도 듣고 한 때는 에이스 소리도 들었던 나인데 새로운 회사에서의 나의 모습은 사소한 실수를 계속해서 반복하는 초라한 모습을 하고 있습니다. 이러한 혼란의 시기에 옆 자리에 동료가 있다는 사실은 큰 도움이 됩니다. 메신저에서 1:1 대화창을 띄워놓고 묻기에는 심리적으로 살짝 부담이 되는 내용도 바퀴달린 의자를 스윽 끌고 가 옆자리 동료에게 묻는 건 어쩐지 심리적 부담이 적습니다. 동료들과 함께 하는 점심 시간이나 티타임에서 듣게 되는 회사 내외의 소식들이나 전반적인 문화에 대한 이야기들도 적응에 큰 도움이 됩니다. 무엇보다 대면하는 동료의 언어적/비언어적 피드백을 통해 내가 어떻게 잘 적응해나가고 있는지에 대한 힌트를 얻는 것도 큰 도움이 됩니다. 그런 것들이 배제된 채로 재택 근무 체제 내에서 모니터 너머로만 동료를 만날 수 있는 환경에서는 어쩐지 나만 동떨어져 있는 기분을 느끼기도 합니다. 한편 직급이 올라갈 수록 이러한 종류의 재택 근무의 어려움은 더욱 커지지 않을까 하는 생각도 듭니다. 저는 아직까지 실무자의 입장이긴 이기도 하고, 기술을 다루는 직군에 있다 보니까 좀 덜하긴 합니다. 하지만 직급이 올라갈 수록 업무의 성격은 점차 기술에서 포커스 아웃되고 사람과 조직에 포커스 인 되는 것 같습니다. 실무자들이 일을 잘 할수 있는 환경을 조성하고, 조직 간의 협업을 조정하고, 차상위 직급자의 비즈니스 방향과 의중을 파악하여 실무자 들의 업무 방향을 세밀하게 조정해야 합니다. 이러한 종류의 일들이 모니터 너머에서도 이전처럼 원활하게 가능한지는 아직 잘 모르겠습니다. 제가 아직까지 직접적으로 경험해보지 못한 종류의 일이라서 단언하기는 힘들겠습니다만, 비대면 환경에서는 아직까지는 한계가 있지 않나 라는 생각을 해봅니다. 지난 2년간 IT 회사들은 재택 근무 체제에 대한 즐거운 실험을 진행해 왔습니다. 리모트 환경에서도 업무를 수월하게 진행할 수 있도록 HR 조직과 중간 관리자들은 치열하게 고민을 해왔습니다.
