 [이 글은 제 인스타에 쓴 글을 옮긴 것입니다.글이 좀 두서가 없어도 양해 부탁 드립니다.] 21.05.19 Magazine B : LEICA 편을 읽고. 라이카라는 브랜드에 대해서 궁금하여 읽게 된 매거진 B : 라이카 편이다. 매거진 B를 읽다보면 어떤 브랜드가 가진 힘에 대해서 알게 되는데 이번 라이카 편을 읽으면서 느끼는게 있다. 첫째, 라이카와 애플 그리고 스위스 시계는 어딘가 닮은 점이 많다는 것이다. 카시오,세이코와 같은 재패니즈 워치가 전자 쿼츠 시계를 출시하여 기존의 기계식 시계로 이루어진 스위스 시계 시장에 커다란 충격을 주었던 쿼츠 파동(Quartz Crisis)을 기억해보자. 더 이상 기계식 시계가 주는 잔고장이나 유지보수비용, 동력제공에 대한 걱정은 할 필요가 없어졌으며, 가격은 훨씬 저렴하면서 정확도는 더 높았던 전자 시계의 출시로 기존의 기계식 시계를 주로 판매하던 스위스 시계 업계는 크게 휘청였다, 그렇지만 그 풍파를 이겨내고 2021년 스마트폰으로 매우 정확한 시간을 간편하게 확인할 수 있는 지금도 롤렉스와 같은 스위스 시계 브랜드들은 백화점에서 예약해도 1년뒤에 받을 수 있을 정도로 인기가 높으며 그 가격대는 소형차부터 중/대형차 수준에 육박하는 매우 고가의 시장을 형성하고 있다. 그렇다면 애플은 어떠한가. 삼성을 비롯한 기타 스마트폰 제조사와 태블릿,데스크탑 제조사들이 제조단가와 마진가의 격차를 조금이라도 더 벌리기 위해 노력하고 있을 떄 애플은 고고히 그 위를 날아다니며 고가의 가격을 형성하고 있음에도 여전히 사과 형상을 보면 보는 이로 하여금 두근거리게 하며 매분기 100조대의 매출과 세계에서 가장 큰 시가총액(1000조원대, 우리 나라 한 해 예산 400~500조)을 형성하고 있다. 라이카라는 브랜드 또한 그러하다. 디지털 카메라의 출시로 처참히 무너진 필름 카메라.거기다가 이젠 과거 전문가용 카메라에서 가능했떤 수준의 결과물을 스마트폰에 달린 작은 카메라 모듈이 해내는 세상.수천만원의 품질을 수십만원에서 구현가능한 세상에서 흑백만 촬영가능한 카메라를 내놓는 한 편, 소형차 한대 값에 육박하는 가격표를 달고 나오는 라이카이지만 미친듯이 팔리고 세상에 여전히 수많은 마니아를 만들어 내고 있다. 이 것들이 가능한 이유는 무엇일까? 먼저 가격을 정당화 하는 압도적인 기술력이다.스위스 시계만이 가능한 고도의 컴플리케이션(복잡한 시계 매커니즘으로 주로 문 페이즈나 date표시기능등을 말한다). 폐쇄적이지만 높은 최적화 수준의 Mac OS와 그 하드웨어.라이카 만의 수준높은 렌즈와 특유의 초점 메커니즘까지.이들은 다른 제조사들의 추종을 불허하는 자신들만의 독보적인 기술력을 지니고 있다. 그렇지만 이러한 기술력이 가진 한계점은 분명하다. 기계식 시계가 아무리 정확해진다한들 전자시계의 정확성에 비교할 것이 아니며, 고도의 컴플리케이션 또한 수십만원짜리 스마트워치의 그래픽으로 쉽게 구현이 가능하다.애플의 수준높은 하드웨어와 소프트웨어는 그 폐쇄적인 환경안에서만 구현이 가능하며 라이카보다 훨씬 높은 수준의 해상도를 구현하는 카메라가 즐비하고 라이트룸 같은 후편집 소프트웨어를 통해서 더 다양한 변주의 높은 수준의 결과물을 다른 카메라를 통해서도 구현할 수 있다. 이렇듯 이들이 가진 기술력은 분명 우물 안의 개구리처럼 특정한 우물 안에서만 성립하는 공식이다.그러나 이러한 우물을 우물이 아니라 바다로 만들어주는 것은 이들의 브랜드가 가진 스토리요, 이 브랜드를 사용하는 유명인사들이다. 스위스 시계가 구현해온 수백년의 역사.스티브 잡스라는 전설적인 인물과 조너선 아이브라는 디자이너가 만들어온 애플의 세계. 최초라는 타이틀과 역사의 중요한 순간을 늘 함께해온(사진의 유명한 장면 또한 라이카로 촬영되었다)라이카라는 브랜드. 그리고 그 긴 역사의 기간 동안 우리가 동경하는 인물들이 그 브랜드를 향유하는 모습은 이를 지켜봐온 우리들로 하여금 그 배른드를 구매하는 것이 그 역사와 스토리를 구매하는 것이라는 착각을 불러일으키며 환상에 젖게 만든다.그것이 아마도 그 브랜드를 보았을 때 어딘가 두근거리는 마음의 원천일 것이다. 그리고 그 두근거림은 또 다시 다른이에게로 전이되어 공명하며 그 브랜드의 명맥을 이어나가게 만든다. 최첨단 다초점 초고해상도 시대의 수동 초점 라이카 카메라는 마치 수동 페라리와 같다. 그것을 활용하는 이로 하여금 좀 더 그 것의 본질에 다가가도록 허용해주며 자동이 주는 편리함에 잊혀진 그 기기의 고유의 매커니즘과 사진이라는 매체가 지닌 특성을 고려토록 숨을 가다듬게 한다. 언젠가 라이카.애플.스위스 시계같은 스토리를 지닌 브랜드들을 대상으로한 큐레이션을 펼쳐보고 싶다. 물론 그러기엔 아직 견문이 너무나 좁다.모르는게 너무 많다.그렇지만 오늘도 한 브랜드를 배웠다. 하나를 알았다.앞으로 한 발짝 나아간다.
