[솔저 오브 포춘] 용병은 돈을 받기 위해 전쟁터에서 싸우는 사람입니다. 보통 정치적 신념이나 양심, 국적은 무시한 채 가장 큰 액수를 약속한 고용주를 찾아 움직이게 됩니다. 이러한 이유로 많은 사람들이 용병을 싫어하거나 미워합니다. 현대 국가의 입장에서 보면 국가의 보전에 무익한 존재에 가깝습니다. 국민 감정 문제도 분명 있습니다. 한일 전쟁이 벌어졌는데 일본군에 고용된 한국인 용병이 한국군을 공격한다고 생각해 보세요. 아니면 제2 625전쟁이 일어났는데 북한군에게 고용된 일본인 용병이 한국군을 공격한다면? 생각만 해도 짜증나고, 기분이 영 그렇잖아요. 우리야 상상으로 끝나지만 아프리카 몇몇 국가들은 실제로 당한 일이거든요. 따라서 용병은 정당한 교전당사자로 인정받지 못했고, 전투원의 권리를 합의한 제네바 협약으로 보호되지 않습니다. 원론적으로는 용병을 포로로 잡아서 즉결처형해도 국제법에 저촉되지 않습니다. 수많은 창작물에서 어쩔 때는 악당이나 괴물로, 어쩔 때는 주인공이 되어 낭만적으로 그려지는 용병. 이번 편은 고대와 중세의 역사 속에서 용병은 어떻게 시작되었고, 어떤 모습으로 그려졌고, 어떻게 활동했나를 살펴보겠습니다. [군인만큼 오래된 직업] 용병에 대한 최초의 기록은 3300년 전, 즉 기원전 13세기 이집트에서 발견되었습니다. 당시 파라오인 람세스 2세는 1만 1000명의 누비아 경보병을 고용해 전투에 동원했습니다. 이집트는 당대 최고 제국답게 아프리카의 누비아 외에도 시리아, 가나안 등에서 용병을 추가 고용하여 정복 전쟁을 수행했습니다. 한편 고대 그리스는 당시 야만족이던 유럽인 용병을 고용해서 도시 국가 간 분쟁에 활용했어요. 그 중에서도 도시 국가 카르타고는 주로 갈리아와 스페인 용병을 고용해 지중해 해안선을 따라 길고 넓게 퍼진 해상 무역 왕국을 다스렸습니다. 이집트와 그리스 도시 국가의 용병들은 부족당 대부분 하나의 특수병과를 맡는 식으로 고용되었어요. 누비아는 경보병과 기마대, 크레타 섬 사람들은 궁병, 그리스 출신은 중장보병 하는 식으로 병종을 담당하여, 고용하는 국가가 모자란 능력을 채워주는 일종의 소방수 역할을 맡았습니다. 분쟁이 잦은 시절, 가뜩이나 인력이 모자란 판에 오랜 시간과 비용을 들여 새로운 병종을 키우는 건 모험이었기 때문입니다. 상비군을 대규모로 운용한 로마군도 용병을 적극 활용했습니다. 로마군은 보병과 공병은 강했으나, 나머지 부대 특히 기마대는 약한 편이어서 누미디아, 갈리아, 게르만 기병대를 고용해서 약점을 메우는 식으로 써먹었습니다. 이런 전술적 탄력성 때문에 로마가 더 잘 싸웠는지도 모르겠어요. 4세기 제국 후기 로마는 용병을 귀화의 형태로 아예 정규군 안에 받아들입니다. 가난한 평민들은 가난해서, 부자들은 당연히 부자니까 징병을 거부했고, 그렇다고 매력적인 모병제를 만들자니 잦은 전쟁과 불량한 징세 시스템 탓에 돈이 없었습니다. 결국 황제와 장군들은 부족 통째로 이민족 병사들을 받아들여 국경 통제와 전쟁에 동원하였습니다. 주로 게르만족이었던 이들은 서서히 로마에 귀화하였고, 용병의 성질도 사라지면서 국가에 충성하는 정규군이 되었으니 나름 긍정적인 마무리라고 할 수 있겠죠. 비슷한 시기 중국의 춘추전국시대에는 간첩단이나 암살단 등의 형태로 전문 인력을 제공받아 전략을 펼치는 사례, 다른 군벌이나 군주에게 식량이나 천을 주고 병력을 동원하는 사례 등 용병에 대한 풍부한 기록이 남아 있습니다. [가난해서] 12세기 스위스는 국토 거의 전부가 산지에 무역에 필수 요소인 바다도 접하지 못한 내륙국이어서 무척 가난한 나라였습니다. 한편 스위스는 이웃이자 오스트리아의 전신인 합스브루크 제국에 병합되지 않으려고 필사적으로 노력해야 했습니다. 해결책은 군대였습니다. 스위스는 주마다 현대의 예비군처럼 지정된 기간 동안 군사 훈련을 받는 일종의 민병대 체계를 갖추었습니다. 다른 나라보다 300년은 앞선 상비 민병대 체계는 주변 강대국 사이에서 살아남으려는 안타까운 몸부림이었죠. 험준한 고산지대 환경 속에서 자란 전사들은 강대국과 전투를 거치면서 더욱 강해졌습니다. 스위스 병사들은 창이나 도끼와 갈고리, 창이 결합된 무기 할버드로 무장했습니다. 선봉, 중앙, 후위 3개로 내부 조직을 나눈 용병들은 네모난 방진을 이루어 개개인의 힘을 강화시켰습니다. 활이나 십자궁 공격 속에도 방진은 흩어지지 않았고, 빽빽하게 도열한 그대로 적 보병이나 기마대나 가릴 것 없이 맞상대하며 공격했습니다. 이러한 전술을 고수한 스위스 용병들은 무장한 기사를 포함한 합스브루크 제국 병력을 깨뜨리면서 명성을 쌓았습니다. 요새로 치면 기사는 탱크 같은 기갑부대인데 이걸 보병부대가 깬다니 경제적으로 얼마나 큰 이득이에요. 당연히 그들은 유명해졌고 다른 나라나 세력에서는 이러한 우수한 병사들을 용병으로 활용하길 원했죠. 특히 중세 내내 국내외 전투를 벌였던 프랑스와 독일이 그랬습니다. 스위스는 주마다 보유한 병력을 용병으로 전환해 산업의 일환으로 빌려주기 시작합니다. 결국 13세기경 스위스 용병은 유럽 최강으로 인정받았고, 14-15세기에는 백년전쟁과 부르고뉴 전쟁 등을 통해 적들을 차례로 깨뜨리면서 명성을 드높였습니다. 교황청이 그들과 계약하고 교황령을 지키는 병력으로 선택한 시기도 이 즈음입니다. 자연히 그들은 스위스 내부에서도 선망의 대상이 되었습니다. 젊은이들은 퇴역 용병의 모험담을 듣고 엄청난 보수와 주변국들의 존경을 받고자 앞 다퉈 용병이 되었습니다. 이미 많은 용병단이 욕을 먹고 있었지만 스위스 용병은 달랐습니다. 이들은 계약을 신성시하며 고용주와 신의를 지키려고 최선을 다했습니다. 적이 아무리 강해도 물러서지 않았으며 앞서 말했던 다른 용병들처럼 태만하거나 교활하지 않았습니다. 스위스 용병은 1840년대 말 정부에서 용병업을 금지할 때까지 1527년 바티칸을 지키다 항복 없이 전멸, 16세기 후반에는 스페인에 고용되어 동족끼리도 물러서지 않고 전투, 1792년에는 루이 16세를 보호하려다가 항복 없이 전멸하는 등의 일화를 남기면서 명성을 보전했습니다. 이들은 왜 이렇게 계약을 신성시했을까요. 답은 그만큼 절박하기 때문이었습니다. 농수산과 무역이 힘든 불모의 땅에서 용병업은 위험하지만 고수익이 보장되는 거의 유일한 직업이었습니다. 고수익을 계속 유지하면서 계약을 고향 후배나 가족, 친척, 자식에게 물려주려면 그만큼의 능력을 보여줘야 했죠. 나 하나의 잘못으로 끝나면 모를까, 다른 사람들의 미래까지 막힐 판이니 도망이나 태만은 꿈도 꾸지 못했습니다. 이기적인 개인이 혼자 이득 보려고 그런 짓을 한다? 그럼 주변에서 말리거나 설득이 불가능하면 죽였죠. 고용주의 바람대로 항상 이기면 해결되겠지만 그럴 수는 없으니 스위스 용병들은 차선의 선택지로 다른 용병이랑 가장 차별되는 모습을 보이는 길을 선택한 것입니다. 모든 용병이 이랬다면 용병에 대한 부정적인 이미지는 없었겠죠? 한편 모든 게 밝을 수만은 없어서 퇴직한 스위스 고참 용병은 스위스 내 위험 요소 중 하나였습니다. 길게는 20년도 넘게 전장에서 사람을 죽이던 병사는 마음을 크게 다친 경우가 많았습니다. 일종의 살인마가 된 은퇴 병사들은 간단한 말싸움에도 칼을 뽑아 상대를 상해하거나 살해했습니다. 가족들은 참다못해 그들을 버렸고, 버림받은 병사들은 마을회관이나 주 정부가 지정된 장소에서 살아야 했습니다. 심각한 자들은 지방 정부에서 암살하는 경우도 있었다고 합니다. 영원히 번성할 것 같던 스위스 용병에게도 결국 파국은 찾아옵니다. 우선 발달한 화약무기가 문제였습니다. 슬슬 간편해지면서 위력도 강해지는 화약무기 앞에 큰 변화 없이 고슴도치처럼 진형을 이뤄 전투하는 방식을 고집하는 스위스 용병은 좋은 목표가 되었습니다. 전투 능력의 상향평준화도 문젯거리였습니다. 장창병, 총병대, 검방 보병을 한데 묶어 모든 상황에 대응하게 만든 스페인의 테르시오, 스위스 용병의 장단점을 면밀히 분석하고 여기에 테르시오 전술을 섞은 란츠크네히트 용병단이 상향평준화의 좋은 예입니다. 일테면 고급 뷔페와 뷔페식 백반집이 유행인데 스위스 용병은 가정식 백반 하나만 고집한 격입니다. 특히 독일인 용병단 란츠크네히트의 발전은 스위스 용병들에게 가장 큰 위협이었습니다. 몇 번의 전투로 엎치락뒤치락 하던 중 1525년 이탈리아 파비아 전투에서 두 조직은 편이 나뉘어 정면으로 붙었습니다. 결과는 스위스 용병대의 대 참패였습니다. 부대가 궤멸하고 고용주가 포로로 잡히는 참패 속에서 영광은 사라지고, 그들을 찾는 계약도 크게 줄어들었습니다. 대세는 누가 봐도 분명했습니다. 총. 그리고 장전 중 총병을 보호할 수 있는 창과 검. 그러나 대세가 바뀌는 와중에도 계약을 성실히 수행하는 스위스 용병의 가치는 지켜졌습니다. 지금도 바티칸 대 성당 앞을 지키는 전통 복장 차림의 스위스 용병대가 그 사실을 증명합니다. [란츠크네히트 용병] 앞서 소개한 대로 스위스 용병을 대체하였으며, 결국 역사 속에 길이 이름을 남긴 독일 용병단입니다. 창단년은 1487년이며, 신성 로마 제국 황제 막시밀리안 1세가 스위스 용병단에 대응하려고 만들었습니다. 란츠크네히트는 황제가 부대 규모와 목표, 병력 숫자를 지정하여 면허를 발행하면 면허를 습득한 지휘관이 이를 수행하는 구조였습니다. 주로 대령 계급의 귀족인 지휘자는 은행 대출이나 주 정부의 보조금을 수령해 자금을 마련했습니다. 자금이 마련되면 다음은 홍보였습니다. 지정된 지역에서 징병관, 음악대와 함께 요란한 홍보 행사를 통해 병력을 모집했습니다. 란츠크네히트의 주무기는 장창이었고 병력 중 일부는 장거리 무기를 소지했습니다. 본대와 달리 고참병이나 정예부대는 할버드나 독일 특유의 양손검 츠바이핸더로 무장했는데 이들은 임무의 특수성이나 위험성, 그동안의 공로를 인정받아 본대 병력보다 급료를 최소 두 배 이상 더 받았습니다. 무기는 스위스 용병과 대체로 비슷한 반면, 복장은 확실히 차이가 났습니다. 단순한 농민복 같은 옷을 착용한 스위스 용병과 달리 란츠크네히트는 노란색, 붉은색, 파란색의 원색 재질에 잔뜩 부풀린 어깨, 치렁거리는 레이스 등 당시 기준으로도 파격적인 옷차림으로 존재감을 드러냈습니다. 초반 란츠크네히트는 특기 사항 없는 흔한 용병단이었습니다. 웬만한 용병단이 저지르는 비리는 다 저질렀고, 돈만 더 받을 수 있다면 동족과의 전투도 마다하지 않았습니다. 그러나 스위스 용병과의 전투, 1520년대부터 신성 로마 제국에 소속되면서 적국인 프랑스와의 전투 등을 거치며 란츠크네히트는 정예군으로 거듭납니다. 여기에 만족하지 않고 스페인 부대 테르시오의 전술까지 습득한 란츠크네히트는 앞서 적었듯 1525년 스위스 용병을 완전히 격파하여 그들을 역사의 무대에서 끌어내는 데 결정적인 공헌을 하게 됩니다. [유럽 외 지역의 용병] 물론 유럽만 용병을 고용하지는 않았습니다. 불행히도 전 세계 어디서나 전쟁은 흔했으니까요. 7세기 중국 당나라는 티베트와 위구르 족 병사를 고용해 투르크 등 유목민족의 전쟁에 동원했습니다. 15세기 일본 전국시대에는 총포에 전문화된 용병 부대 사이카슈, 불교 일파인 잇코 종 승병용병부대 등이 있었습니다. 태국은 스페인과 네덜란드 백인 용병을 고용해 버마군 등 주변 국가와 싸웠습니다. 임진왜란 당시 명나라가 파병군의 일부로 포르투칼 용병을 고용했는데 그 중 잠수가 전문인 흑인 용병이 섞여 있었단 사실은 요새 슬슬 많은 사람들의 입에 오르내립니다. 자, 그럼 중세는 이쯤 하고 좀 더 우리가 체감하기 쉬운 근대와 현대로 넘어가볼까요?
