[“전원, 착검!”] 2004년 5월 21일 이라크 바스라. 차량으로 이동하던 영국군 아가일&서덜랜드 하이랜더 연대 소속 병사 20명은 비 방탄 차량으로 이동 중 이라크 시아파 마흐디 민병대 100여 명의 매복을 받아 고립되었습니다. 적은 아군의 다섯 배였고 RPG-7 로켓 수류탄 발사기, PKM 경기관총, 박격포를 갖추었습니다. 기습에 화력까지 상대가 안 되는 상황. 부상 없이 반격한 것도 잠시 휴대한 탄약이 다 떨어지는 최악의 순간이 찾아옵니다. 지휘관은 잠시 고민하다가 착검을 명령하고, 20명 전원이 200미터가량의 개활지를 달려 돌격했습니다. 결과는 대성공. 기세에 놀란 민병대원들은 진형을 흐트러뜨리고 도망가느라 착검에 당해 35명의 전사자를 냈습니다. 하이랜더 연대원의 피해는 전사 0명, 경상자 3명이었습니다. [웬만하면 피해야 하는, 그러나 꼭 이겨야 하는] 6·25 참전용사들의 경험담을 들어보면 사격이나 총격, 폭격 등은 그런 대로 견딜 만한데 근접 백병전은 정말 고통스러웠다고들 하세요. 전투 당시에는 내가 살아야 하니까 아무 생각 없이 있는 힘을 다해 적을 죽이는데, 몸에 돌던 아드레날린이 빠진 뒤 밤이 되면 좀 전의 기억이 떠오르는 거죠. 열 살 좀 넘은 소년병이 살려달라고 애원하던 기억, 손에 그를 죽이며 남았던 감각 등등. 하지만 누군들 그러고 싶어서 그랬을까요. 산지가 가득한 나라, 일테면 한국처럼 울창한 삼림에 수풀, 기묘한 자리에 높낮이가 제각각인 언덕 앞에선 공방 모두 한계가 있어서 자칫하다간 달라붙기 십상입니다. 시가전 역시 마찬가지입니다. 처음 들어가 본 거리와 건물은 구조가 어떤지, 다음 모퉁이 뒤엔 뭐가 있는지 전혀 모릅니다. 이처럼 화력과 장비가 발달한 현대전 중에도 총을 제대로 쏘지 못하고 총검이나 단검, 주먹이나 발차기를 해야 하는 상황이 분명 일어납니다. 이를 대처하려면 특수한 훈련이 필요하며, 오늘 다룰 주제가 바로 해당 훈련인 군용 근접 격투술입니다. [근접 격투술] 근접 격투술은 몸과 현재 지닌 모든 장비를 이용해 근접한 적을 쓰러뜨리는 방법의 통칭입니다. 보통 탄환이 없거나 사격을 할 수 없는 상황에서 이기는 기술을 뜻하죠. 근접 격투술은 크게 암살, 맨손 격투, 장비나 도구를 이용한 격투 등 세 가지 분야로 나눌 수 있습니다. 좀 더 넓게 보자면 맨손의 적이 자신의 총을 잡고 실랑이를 하는 경우에도 이를 뿌리치고 사격하는 방법까지 포함합니다. 미군은 19세기 필리핀에서, 20세기에는 아프리카와 이라크에서, 21세기에는 아프가니스탄에서 이러한 상황을 수십 번 겪었습니다. 미 해병대 근접 전투 교장에서는 해당 전훈을 감안하여 문 뒤에 숨어 있던 적이 훈련병의 총을 잡고 놓지 않는 상황이 꼭 나옵니다. 근접 격투술은 무술에서 유래되었고, 현재는 함께 발전하는 과정 속에 있지만 근접 격투술과 무술의 목적이 다르다는 큰 차이점이 있습니다. 무술은 자기 수양을 중시하고, 이를 증명하기 위해 보통 점수와 KO제로 운용되는 경기나 시합을 대비합니다. 질 때 잃는 것은 자신감입니다. 근접 격투술에서 지면 목숨을 잃죠. 따라서 근접 격투술은 배우기 쉽고 효과적이며 치명적인 기술을 선호합니다. 또한 효과만 인정된다면 모든 무술의 기술을 가져온다는 특징이 있습니다. 근접 격투술 중 일반 무술계에서 거의 찾아보기 힘든 자체적인 기술도 있습니다. 바로 총검술입니다. 1차대전 전까지 총을 쥔 보병은 창병과 취급을 받았습니다. 총 끝에 총검을 달면 창이랑 비슷한 자세와 비슷한 패턴의 기술이 필요하거든요. 이후 보병용 총이 짧아지면서 창보다는 장검술을 응용하는 나름의 진보를 이뤘으나 변화는 곧 사라졌습니다. 모든 전쟁을 끝내리라던 1차대전이 끝난 다음, 세계의 군대는 각종 전투 기술 개발을 미루거나 그만두었습니다. 근접 격투술도 마찬가지였습니다. 당장 저격, 산탄총 사용이 비신사적인 기법이라고 욕을 먹었던 시대에 암살도 포함된 근접 격투술은 참호전 내 백병전의 악몽만 끄집어낼 뿐이었습니다. 그러나 인류는 21년 만에 교훈을 잊고 결국 2차대전을 터뜨립니다. 비밀리에 연구하던 몇몇 기술 외에 다른 모든 군사 기술은 제자리에 멈춰 답보 상태였지요. 근접 격투술도 처음엔 다른 군사 기술처럼 근접 격투술을 체계적으로 가르치는 군대가 하나도 없다는 말과 같았습니다. 윌리엄 페이번이 나타나기 전까지는 말이죠. [초기 근접 격투술의 아버지 페이번] 윌리엄 페이번은 1901년 왕립 해병대에 입대해 1907년 상하이 경찰에 합류했습니다. 당시 상하이는 영국, 프랑스, 미국 등 외국인의 자율 정착촌이 있는 국제적인 도시였습니다. 1920년대에는 러시아 인과 러시아계 유대인이 공산화된 러시아를 피해 상하이에 합류했습니다. 상하이는 세계에서 다섯 번째로 큰 도시였고, 외국인만 7만 명이 거주했습니다. 문제는 이렇게 활발한 국제도시는 엄청난 범죄가 판을 치는 곳이었다는 점입니다. 육로로 이어진 주변 국가는 혁명과 불황, 내전 같은 국내 정치 상황으로 치안이 불안정했습니다. 여기에서 양산된 가난한 피난민과 군벌과 산적 들이 상하이로 넘어왔죠. 시내에는 이미 자리를 잡은 일본, 중국, 러시아의 조직 폭력배들이 총기와 마약을 거머쥐고 이권 다툼을 위해 상대방 조직원을 죽였습니다. 가난한 피난민들은 절도와 강도와 살인, 매춘으로 생계를 꾸렸고 미국, 일본, 영국, 중국, 공산 러시아의 첩보원들은 정보를 캐려고 어쩔 땐 돈을 어쩔 땐 무기를 뿌렸습니다. 상하이의 악명은 영어 사전에도 남아 있습니다. 상하이란 단어를 검색해 보면 어떤 일을 속여서 하게 만들다, 강제로 시킨다, 마약과 술로 기절시킨 뒤 선원으로 만든다, 유괴하다는 뜻의 동사로 쓸 수 있습니다. 윌리엄 페이번은 이런 마굴 같은 곳에서 폭동 진압반을 이끌며 20년 동안 경찰관 활동을 하였습니다. 그는 유도, 권투, 레슬링, 프랑스 킥복싱인 사바테, 유술, 중국 무술을 배웠고 이를 실전에서 활용하였습니다. 손바닥을 포함한 온몸에 찔리고 베인 흉터를 입었음에도 그는 살아남아 경찰용 방검, 방탄복이나 긴급 권총 사격술 같은 장비와 훈련 과정을 개발했습니다. 2차대전이 발발하자 영국군 특수부대는 그를 교관으로 모셨죠. 특수부대가 전쟁 중 수행하는 파괴 공작은 명분을 제외하면 살인, 강도, 절도, 폭파, 방화 같은 범죄와 똑같습니다. 20년 동안 범죄자들과 싸우면서 그들의 수법을 알고, 그들에 대항하는 수법을 개발한 사람에게는 당연히 배울 것이 많았습니다. 그가 남긴 족적 중에 가장 유명한 것은 페이번-사익스 특수부대용 단검입니다. 친구이자 동료인 사익스와 함께 개발한 이 무기는 찌르기 전용으로 턱 밑, 갈비뼈 사이를 찔러 적을 즉사시키기 쉽게 고안되었습니다. 윌리엄 페이번은 영국군, 미군, 망명 중인 프랑스군, 망명 중인 폴란드 군에게 근접 격투와 암살을 가르쳤습니다. 이들은 나치와 싸우면서 수많은 경험 속에서 자신들의 기술을 발전시킵니다. [세계의 근접 격투술] 이후 각국은 근접 격투술의 필요성을 체감하고, 자신들의 현실과 고유의 무술, 전통에 맞춰 근접 격투술을 개발해 보급합니다. 특히 고유의 무술은 훈련 교관을 선출할 때, 또는 교육생이 이미 사회에서 수련한 경우 훈련 시간은 줄이고 강도는 높일 수 있기 때문에 중요한 요소가 되었습니다. 한편 군용 근접 격투술은 실용성과 실전성을 목표로 삼으면서 좋은 기술은 서슴없이 받아들입니다. 그래서 각 격투술은 크게 다른 것 같아도 자세히 살펴보면 비슷한 모습을 보입니다. 특히 옆 나라나 우호적인 관계에 있는 나라, 잠재적인 적국인 나라 사이에서 그렇습니다. 서로 복잡한 친척 관계인 근접 격투술, 이제부터 자료가 있는 주요 나라들을 살펴보겠습니다. [미국] 미 해병대는 2002년 해병대 마샬 아츠 프로그램(Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, MCMAP), 일명 매크맵이라는 이름의 격투 프로그램을 개발하며 꾸준히 격투 능력 강화를 목표했습니다. 공식적으로는 세계 주요 무술의 장점을 골라 도입했다고 발표했지만 사실 복싱, 무에타이, 레슬링, 브라질리언 주짓수 기술이 뼈대를 이룬 격투술입니다. 이는 자국 무술 계에서 가장 활황 중인 UFC 리그와 MMA 붐을 그대로 가져온 느낌입니다. 따라서 기술 중 암바, 리어 네이키드 초크, 롤링 니바 기술은 물론 펀치, 킥, 그래플링, 그라운드 기술을 골고루 수련하는 교육 과정을 갖추고 있습니다. 또한 앞서 말한 맨손 격투술은 물론 단검, 단봉 같은 무기술, 총검술까지 훈련합니다. 매크맵은 미군 내에서 인정을 받아 점차 지배적인 군용 격투술의 위치에 오르는 중이며, 뒤에 소개할 이스라엘 격투술 크라브 마가와 쌍벽을 이룹니다. [중국] 아시안 게임 시범 경기나 격투기 경기로 간간이 볼 수 있는 산타라는 이름의 격투기가 바로 군용 격투술입니다. 1924년 국민당 정부가 황푸군관학교에서 전통 쿵후를 군용무술로 가르친 것이 산타의 시초입니다. 국민당 주석이었던 손문이 여기에 공산화된 러시아, 소비에트 연방의 삼보를 배우라고 지시했습니다. 초청된 소련 교관들은 산타에 레슬링 같은 잡기 중심의 기술을 이식했습니다. 1997년 타류 시합을 시작하면서 중국은 올림픽과 아시안 게임에 정식 종목으로 채택을 꿈꿉니다. 그러나 올림픽 위원회가 2000년대 들어 올림픽 종목 비대화를 막기 위해 기존의 종목도 빼는 판이라, 정식 종목이 될 가능성은 거의 없습니다. 산타는 잘 모르는 사람이 보면 태국의 무에타이와 착각할 정도로 자세나 기술 체계가 비슷합니다. 하지만 삼보의 영향인지 던지고 메치는 기술을 고득점 처리하며, 선수들도 여기에 특화되어 상대방의 다리를 붙잡는 모습을 자주 보입니다. 특이하게도 땅에 떨어진 사람을 꺾거나 조르는 그라운드 기술은 아예 없습니다. 실전성을 충분히 갖춘 산타는 중국군과 중국의 경찰인 공안이 중점적으로 훈련하고 있습니다. [일본] 자위대는 1959년 자위대 격투술이라는 이름으로 군용 격투술을 보급했습니다. 타격기와 유술, 그라운드 기술까지 포함해 나름 종합격투기의 모습을 보입니다. 보급 시기를 생각해 보면 과연 브라질리언 주짓수의 조상 격인 유도의 종주국답습니다. 맨손 격투술 외에도 총검과 단검 격투 체계도 갖춰서 이 역시 기본은 하는 느낌입니다. [러시아] 스페츠나츠를 포함한 러시아 특수부대가 선택한 무술 시스테마가 유명합니다. 시스테마는 체계란 뜻이며, 구 소비에트 연방에서 수련하던 군용 격투술에 새로 중국 무술이나 삼보, 유술 체계 등 다양한 무술이 섞여 있습니다. 시스테마의 기원은 여러 가지 설이 있는데 러시아에서 가장 오래된 체육 조직 다이나모가 맨손 무술을 연구해서 군에 보급했다는 설이 유력합니다. 군용 격투술로서는 특이하게 다앙한 유파로 나뉘었고, 유파마다 기술 체계도 다릅니다. 이는 시스테마를 연구, 수련하던 스페츠나츠가 다양한 소속으로 흩어져 있으면서 큰 틀만 비슷하게 잡고 나머지는 독자적으로 발전시켰던 탓이 큽니다. 총검, 삽, 총, 권총 등 도구 격투술 체계를 가졌으며 여기에 펀치, 킥, 그라운드 같은 맨손 격투술 체계를 더해 종합 격투기로서의 성격도 띠었습니다. 시스테마는 부드러운 신체 움직임을 중시하며, 크게 움직이지 않고 상대방의 힘을 이용해 적을 제압한 뒤 치명타를 주는 기술이 많습니다. 움직임만 보면 태극권 같으며, 아예 중국 무술의 발경 같은 개념의 펀치를 사용하는 유파도 있습니다. 이러한 기묘한 움직임과 정리되지 않은 기술 체계 때문에 시스테마는 실전성에 대한 많은 의혹을 사고 있습니다. [북한] 북한군은 차력, 유술, 레슬링을 합친 격술을 가졌습니다. 격술은 실질적인 살인 기법을 목표로 한 군용 격투술입니다. 여러 가지 설이 있으나 가라테와 구 소련의 삼보, 권투, 태권도를 결합하여 원형을 만들었다는 설이 유력합니다. 격술은 박정희 정권 말 귀순한 북한군 격술 선수와 국방부 태권도 선수들의 대결에서 격술 선수가 태권도 선수들을 일격에 참패시켰다는 소문으로 우리에게 알려지기 시작했습니다. 또한 귀순한 북한군 출신들의 증언 중 격술을 수련한 4군단 북한 특수부대 경보병여단 요원 3명이 개성 시내에서 올림픽 복싱 메달리스트 2명 중 1명을 때려죽였다는 소문도 있습니다. 70년대에는 복싱, 80년대에는 킥복싱, 90년대 이후에는 종합 격투기의 기술 체계를 중점적으로 받아들여 격술을 갱신했습니다. 매년 9월경 평양에서 열리는 조선인민군 격술 대회에서는 안구와 사타구니도 공격 가능한 무차별 규칙 탓에 부상자가 속출하며, 사망자도 종종 나옵니다. [대한민국] 합기도를 바탕으로 중국무술과 태권도를 섞은 특공무술이 주로 훈련됩니다. 해병대에서는 특공무술을 좀 더 자신들의 목적에 맞춰 무적도라는 근접 격투술을 개발했습니다. 해군 특수전전단 즉 UDT/SEAL에서는 무사트란 이름의 근접 격투술을 개발해 운영 중입니다. 특공무술은 러시아의 시스테마처럼 다양한 유파와 기술, 체계를 가졌으며 단검, 목도, 창, 봉, 도끼, 야삽까지 사용하도록 훈련하는 것도 비슷합니다. 특공무술은 70년대 당시 박정희 대통령의 지시로 대통령 경호실과 대테러 임무를 지시받은 606 특전사 부대, 5공수특전여단이 함께 개발했습니다. 위에 적은 북한의 격술을 깨기 위해 특공무술이 만들어졌다는 소문이 있으나 확인된 바는 없습니다. 무사트는 Multi UDT/SEAL Assaulting Tactics의 약자로 소총 등 주 병기, 권총 등 보조 병기, 단검, 맨손 전투 기술을 아우르는 근접 격투술 체계입니다. 유투브에 올라온 국방부 홍보 영상을 통해 무사트의 나이프 파이팅 기술을 볼 수 있으나, 그 외에는 별로 알려진 것이 없습니다. 해외 교류가 잦은 특수부대의 격투술인 만큼 크라브 마가, 동남아시아 검술 펜칵실랏 같은 검증된 기술 체계를 습득하고 장점을 받아들이는 중이라고 추측 가능합니다.
