저도 비슷한 고민을 꽤 오랫동안 했어요. 제 전공은 중국 지성사/사회사고, 그것도 12~13세기라는 아주 특수한 시기에 아주 특수한 지역 몇 개를 시범사례로 연구하고 있어요. 말하자면 파리 뒷다리의 세 번째 발톱의 때 같은 걸 정밀하게 연구하고 있는 셈이에요.
공부하다보면 회의감이 들 때가 많죠. 왜 없겠어요. 내가 지금 이걸 왜 하고 있는 걸까. 원래 유학올 때는 훨씬 원대한 목표를 세우고 왔었는데 결국 지금 하고있는 건 박사학위를 가장 말끔하게 받기 위해 수차례 타협한 결과 아닌가. 이걸 연구해서 발표하고 가르친다고해서 읽... 더 보기

말하자면, 직업이랍시고 애써 고른게 별 [의미]가 없어보인다는 거지요. 무의미한 일을 계속 해야 할 것 같은데 그 무의미한 일이나마 계속 하기 위해 무의미한 준비를 계속 하는 게 지독하게 갑갑한 거예요.
하지만 다른 직업 다른 일 다른 전공을 골랐더라면 뭐가 많이 달라졌을까 생각하면... 근데 그게 꼭 그렇지도 않았을 것 같아요. 예컨대, 대기업 총무과에서 자료 복사하는 게 꿈이고 너무 보람찬 사람이나 동사무소 계장직이 너무 보람찬 사람은 별로 없을 거예요. 송병구 선수도 처음엔 스타1이 좋아서 게이머가 됐겠지만 금새 보람을 잃고 와우에 손을 댔고 임요환 선수도 나중엔...뭐였더라...타이탄 뭐시긴가였나에 손을 댔지요. Toby님도 머찐 웹개발자가 되는 꿈을 꾸고 공부하고 직장도 구했지만 일하는 시간보다 더 많은 시간과 노력과 심지어 사비를 들여 홍차넷을 운영하고 있지요 (-_-;;). 그런 걸 보면 직업활동에서 궁극의 보람을 찾기란 원래 지극히 어려운 게 아닌가 싶어요.
이렇게 생각하다보면 마음이 좀 편해져요. 그러다 조금 더 나아가서 이런 데까지 생각이 미치기도 해요. 제 주변엔 실제로 직업활동으로부터 궁극의 보람을 찾은 이들이 소수 있어요. 일견 부러운 케이스인데, 자세히 들여다보면 또 썩 부럽지 않아요. 이들은 자신의 직업에 너무나 큰 보람을 느낀 나머지 직업 활동=삶의 의미가 되어버려요. 이들은 그래서 딱히 취미도 없고 휴식도 없고, 심지어 많은 경우 가족...도 없어요. 중독이죠. 제 눈엔 밸런스가 완전히 무너진 인생인데 자기들은 막 좋아하면서 그렇게 살아요. 물론 이정도로 미X 양반들이 대개 깜짝 놀랄만한 업적을 성취하곤 하지만 한 개인으로서의 인생은 글쎄요... 전 별로 그렇게 살고 싶지 않아요 ㅎㅎ
syzygii님은 지금 의미와 보람에 고프신 상태 같아요. 그런데 하필 지금 종사하고있는 일이 전공공부이니 거기서 문제의 의미와 보람을 찾으려는 것도 당연해요. 하지만 조금만 긴 호흡으로 바라보면 훗날 직장에서 하는 일이 얼마나 보람된가는 별로 중요하지 않을지도 몰라요. 몇년 안에 오덕-크러시가 와서 목숨을 걸만한 취미활동을 하게 되고 (홍차넷질이라든지..), 그 취미활동을 유지시켜주기 위해 보람차게 (?) 일해서 돈을 벌어오는 삶을 살게 될지 누가 아나요. 아니면 직종과 무관하게 닥치고 벌어서 애키우는 재미에 매진하게 될지도 모르지요. 그것도 아니면 약차넷 같은 걸 만들어서 새로운 커뮤니티를 만들게 되실지도 모르지요. 인생 누가 아나요 ㅎㅎ 그러면 그것 나름대로 꽤 재밌는 인생일 테고, 그 인생을 가능하게해주는 기반으로서 약사로서의 하루하루가 그리 나쁘지 않게 보일 거예요.
뭐 물론 이런 미래도 해당 직업활동에서 최소한의 의미와 보람을 얻는다는 전제하에 그려볼 수 있는 거지요. 그 최소한이 안 되면 보통 해당 업계에서 발 빼고 나가버릴 테고 (안철수...?) 거기에는 또 나름의 불안과 흥분과 고통과 기회가 있을 거예요.
저도 공부하기 싫어서 (...) 홍차넷 들어왔다가 주절주절 써봤는데 어떻게 생각을 정리하는 데 도움이 되었을랑가 모르겠어요. 커피 한 잔 드시고 다시 공부합시다. 저도 이제 논문쓰러갑니다. 뿅.
공부하다보면 회의감이 들 때가 많죠. 왜 없겠어요. 내가 지금 이걸 왜 하고 있는 걸까. 원래 유학올 때는 훨씬 원대한 목표를 세우고 왔었는데 결국 지금 하고있는 건 박사학위를 가장 말끔하게 받기 위해 수차례 타협한 결과 아닌가. 이걸 연구해서 발표하고 가르친다고해서 읽고 기뻐해줄 사람이 백 사람은 커녕 열 사람이나 있을까 싶은데 무슨 엄청난 보람이 있는 것도 아니고. 난 누군가 여긴 어딘가 하나 뿐인 인생인데 왜 꼭 중국이었을까. 중국애들 하는 짓이 뭐 이쁘다고. 등등.
말하자면, 직업이랍시고 애써 고른게 별 [의미]가 없어보인다는 거지요. 무의미한 일을 계속 해야 할 것 같은데 그 무의미한 일이나마 계속 하기 위해 무의미한 준비를 계속 하는 게 지독하게 갑갑한 거예요.
하지만 다른 직업 다른 일 다른 전공을 골랐더라면 뭐가 많이 달라졌을까 생각하면... 근데 그게 꼭 그렇지도 않았을 것 같아요. 예컨대, 대기업 총무과에서 자료 복사하는 게 꿈이고 너무 보람찬 사람이나 동사무소 계장직이 너무 보람찬 사람은 별로 없을 거예요. 송병구 선수도 처음엔 스타1이 좋아서 게이머가 됐겠지만 금새 보람을 잃고 와우에 손을 댔고 임요환 선수도 나중엔...뭐였더라...타이탄 뭐시긴가였나에 손을 댔지요. Toby님도 머찐 웹개발자가 되는 꿈을 꾸고 공부하고 직장도 구했지만 일하는 시간보다 더 많은 시간과 노력과 심지어 사비를 들여 홍차넷을 운영하고 있지요 (-_-;;). 그런 걸 보면 직업활동에서 궁극의 보람을 찾기란 원래 지극히 어려운 게 아닌가 싶어요.
이렇게 생각하다보면 마음이 좀 편해져요. 그러다 조금 더 나아가서 이런 데까지 생각이 미치기도 해요. 제 주변엔 실제로 직업활동으로부터 궁극의 보람을 찾은 이들이 소수 있어요. 일견 부러운 케이스인데, 자세히 들여다보면 또 썩 부럽지 않아요. 이들은 자신의 직업에 너무나 큰 보람을 느낀 나머지 직업 활동=삶의 의미가 되어버려요. 이들은 그래서 딱히 취미도 없고 휴식도 없고, 심지어 많은 경우 가족...도 없어요. 중독이죠. 제 눈엔 밸런스가 완전히 무너진 인생인데 자기들은 막 좋아하면서 그렇게 살아요. 물론 이정도로 미X 양반들이 대개 깜짝 놀랄만한 업적을 성취하곤 하지만 한 개인으로서의 인생은 글쎄요... 전 별로 그렇게 살고 싶지 않아요 ㅎㅎ
