한국법원은 현대미술을 이해할까? https://new.redtea.kr/pb/pb.php?id=free&no=2824 마르쉘 뒤샹의 '샘'.. 그냥 소변기에 싸인 한 번 하고 끝,인 작품이라는데요. 물론 미술계의 분들이 다 인정하는 예술품이니, 문외한인 제가 이것의 예술성에 태클을 걸지는 못하겠지만, 적어도 제가 이것의 예술성의 근거를 알고 싶습니다. 저는 개인적으로 예술은 그 예술가의 생각이 본질이지, 자잘한 기교 같은 건 부차적인 거라고 생각합니다. 그건 이해하겠는데.. 문제는, 저 '샘'이라는 예술품은, 그 작품에 담긴 생각이 뭔지도 모르겠지 않나요? 뒤샹이 소변기에 싸인을 한 거랑 제가 소변기에 싸인을 한 거랑 그 의미와 위상이 다를 것이니, 싸인을 했다는 행위 자체는 중요한 게 아니죠. 결국 그 행위에 담긴 생각이 중요한 건데.. 어떤 말로 된 설명을 따로 해준 것도 아닌 것 같고.. 그럼 저 싸인하는 행위 하나만 가지고 그 생각을 유추할 수 있나요? 산업사회 이전에는 예술가의 손이 들어간 작품이 의미가 컸으나, 산업사회가 되면서 굳이 작가의 손이 필요한지에 대한 물음이 끊임없이 지속되었고(예컨대 대량생산 이전의 산업디자인들은 기술공/디자이너가 손수 만든 수제의 영역에 있었다면, 기계화가 되면서 더 이상 수제라고 부르기 힘들어졌죠), 이미 사진과 영화등이 개발된 상황에, 굳이 애써서 회화를, 초상화를, 구상화를 그려야 하는 이유가 뭔가? 뒤샹은 당대 예술가라면 한번쯤은 해봤을 질문에 대한 대답을 저런 파격적인 작품으로 답을 한 것이죠.
예술가는 계획이나 발상의 수립이 중요한 것, 예술가는 자기 발상에 맞는 물건(오브제)을 선택하는 것이 중요한 것.
기교나 기술적 요소는 단지 작가의 착안점을 구현하는 것이지 중요한 것은 오브제 안에 담긴 작가의 생각. 그것들의 전달매체(medium)으로서의 예술에 대한 질문을 던져 준 것이죠.

예술가(Artist)는 꼭 장인(Artisan)처럼 손수 작품을 만들어야 하는가? 아니면 그냥 자기 발상(idea)에 맞는 사물을 선택하기만 해도 되는가?
예술가에겐 손재주가 중요한가? 아니면 창의적인 발상이나 계획(idea)을 수립하는 것이 중요한가?
예술가가 자기 예술작업을 위해 선택한 기성품(ready-made)과 사용하지 않은 다른 일상 기성품은 무슨 차이가 있는가?
예술작품을 예술로 인증해주는 것은 무엇인가? 예술가인가? 관객인가? 미술관같은 예술기관인가?
산업사회 이전에는 예술가의 손이 들어간 작품이 의미가 컸으나, 산업사회가 되면서 굳이 작가의 손이 필요한지에 대한 물음이 끊임없이 지속되었고(예컨대 대량생산 이전의 산업디자인들은 기술공/디자이너가 손수 만든 수제의 영역에 있었다면, 기계화가 되면서 더 이상 수제라고 부르기 힘들어졌죠), 이미 사진과 영화등이 개발된 상황에, 굳이 애써서 회화를, 초상화를, 구상화를 그려야 하는 이유가 뭔가? 뒤샹은 당대 예술가라면 한번쯤은 해봤을 질문에 대한 대답을 저런 파격적인 작품으로 답을 한 것이죠.
예술가는 계획이나 발상의 수립이 중요한 것, 예술가는 자기 발상에 맞는 물건(오브제)을 선택하는 것이 중요한 것.
기교나 기술적 요소는 단지 작가의 착안점을 구현하는 것이지 중요한 것은 오브제 안에 담긴 작가의 생각. 그것들의 전달매체(medium)으로서의 예술에 대한 질문을 던져 준 것이죠.
뭐 어떻게보면 귀에걸면 귀걸이, 코에 걸면 코걸이 같은 해석일 수 있지만, 기존 예술의 패러다임을 깨는 첫 작품이었다는 것에 의미가 있습니다. 하늘밑푸른초원님의 의문처럼 과연 이것도 예술이라고 할 것인가?에 대한 근원적 질문을 던져준거죠.
