유비소프트가 여러 차례 발매 연기까지 하면서 야심차게 준비한 톰 클랜시의 더 디비전을 플레이해봤습니다. PC로 즐겼으며, 권장 사양에 모자른 PC로 구동했습니다만, 크게 불편한 건 느끼지 못했습니다. 오히려 겨울 배경의 실제 시가지의 모습이나 매끄러운 캐릭터 모션 같은 비쥬얼은 낮은 사양의 PC에서도 재미있게 구경할 수 있었네요. 확실히 최근 나온 유비소프트 게임 중에선 PC 최적화가 그래도 좋은 편이더군요. 플레이 내내 보통 혼자서 플레이했고, 파티 플레이는 최대한 적게 하려고 노력한 편입니다. 초반부부터 플레이 내내 드는 생각은 '전투가 생각보다 재미가 없네'였습니다. 그리고 왜 그럴까 PvE와 PvP를 모두 경험해보고 판단한 바로는 더 디비전이 가지는 장르적 한계(혹은 단점) 때문이라 봐요. 더 디비전은 MMOTPS, 슈터 액션 기반의 RPG로 정의할 수 있는데요. 역동적이고 액션을 즐길 수 있는 TPS와 오래도록 즐길 수 있는 육성 요소가 강한 RPG가 만나면 재미있는 장르일 것 같지만, 꼭 그런 건 아닙니다. 정확히는 MORPG입니다만, 보더랜드 시리즈 때도 마찬가지라 생각하는데요. 서로 대등하지 않은 플레이어 혹은 NPC와 겨루면 무슨 문제가 생길까요? 슈터 액션이 가지는 장점이 크게 훼손됩니다. 예를 들어서 적이 저격 중이면 우회로로 돌아가고, 적이 난사 중이면 엄폐하는 식의 플레이는 FPS든, TPS든 간에 기초적이고 늘 게임을 역동적으로 만드는 요소들 중 하나입니다. 그런데 디비전은 그게 없습니다. PvE에 있어서는 멍청한 AI는 엄폐나 우회 이동을 전혀 하지 않습니다. 적 몬스터들이 가지는 경쟁력은 무작정 늘려놓은 체력과 공격력 뿐이죠. 디아블로 3의 정예 몬스터들처럼 다양한 공격 패턴이 있는 것도 아니고, 특히 사실적인 현대전을 소재로 삼다 보니 재치 있는 상상력을 발휘된 재미있는 적도 없습니다. 그러면 PvP는 어떨까요? 훨씬 창의적으로 행동하는 사람들끼리 싸우면 좀 더 낫긴 합니다만, 크게 다르지 않았습니다. 물론 PvE도 혼자서 할 때보다 같이 하면 좀 더 흥미롭긴 합니다만, 원래 게임은 파티 플레이가 더 재미있는 법이니 장점이라 치켜세울 수도 없는 부분일 뿐이죠. 그리고 말이 나와서 하는 말이지만, 톰 클랜시 세계관 기반의 게임일 필요가 있었나 싶기도 합니다. 파밍이 게임 컨텐츠의 핵심 요소인 디비전에서 더욱 큰 단점이 될 수 있을거라고 보는데요. 레벨1과 레벨 70의 도끼의 능력치가 차원이 다른 디아블로의 모습을 이상하게 생각하는 사람은 별로 없습니다. 가상의 세계고, 상상의 영역이니까요. 그런데 똑같은 총이 이름만 좀 다르고 써놓고 능력치가 완전히 다르게 수집되는 걸 보면 성취감에도 영향을 주고 위화감을 주기도 합니다. 번지의 데스티니나 기어박스의 보더랜드가 SF를 선택한 이유 중 하나도 이런 문제점을 해소하기 위함일테고요. 또한 치명적인 전염병이 퍼지고 있는 곳에서 활동하는 비밀 요원들이 주인공인데, 그 전염병에 대한 묘사가 부실하게 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 예를 들어서 폴아웃에선 방사능을 주기적으로 관리해야 하는 압박감을 주곤 하는데, 그에 비하면 디비전은 조금 모자라보입니다. 그나마 게임이 내세우는 가장 강한 개성인 다크존은 지루하고 반복적인 아이템 파밍을 좀 더 긴장감 있게 꾸미려고 애쓴 결과물이긴 합니다만, 지루하긴 매한가지고, 그저 짜증나는 요소만 넣은 아이템 파밍 존으로밖에 안 보였습니다. 개인적으로 제일 아쉬운 부분이 앞서 이야기한 내용의 연장선인데요. 생존자들을 모아서 관리하고 보호하는 비밀 요원이 주인공인 게임이라서 그런 묘사가 실질적인 플레이로 이어질 수 있도록 확장했어야 했다고 봐요. 예를 들어서 단순히 생산 시스템의 레벨만 넣고 끝내는 게 아니라, 여러 보급품을 수시로 마련해줘야 하고, 다양한 인간 군상을 표현하는 다채로운 퀘스트도 있어야 했으며, 아이템 파밍이 단순히 더 잘 싸우기 위한 총기나 방어구만 나오는 게 아니라, 중요 인물이나 기지 운영에 필요한 희귀 물품 등을 구현한다는 식으로 좀 더 게임이 풍성했어야 하지 않았나 싶습니다. 그래서 전 디비전은 꽤 중독성 있는 아이템 파밍까진 넣어줬는데, 그것 빼면 실속이 없는 작품처럼 보입니다. 정말 많은 비판을 받은 디아블로 3 오리지널과 비교해도 부족해보입니다. 실망스럽다기보다는 발매 전부터 뻔히 예상되는 작품의 문제점을 꽤 긴 시간동안 진지하게 고찰하고 어떻게 바꿔야 할까 고려를 해보긴 한건가 싶었습니다. 이게 전염병이 문제인지 찰스 블리스가 나쁜 놈인지, 전염병이 없었어도 찰스 블리스같은 나쁜 놈이 등장하는 플롯은 충분히 가능할 것 같거든요.
초기 트레일러에는 이를 활용하는 게임 요소가 있었던 걸로 추측이 되는데, 그런 부분이 쥐도새도 모르게 사라진 건 안타깝습니다.
