AI AI AI world(2) 에서는 제 개인적 경험을 통해서 1) AI 세계의 인력 shortage가 심각한 수준이라는 점과 2) AI가 경제에 미치는 영향 (왜 AI는 디플레이션 유발자가 될 수 밖에 없는지..) 3) (투자의 세계에서 AI를 보는 것이 아니라) AI의 관점에서 투자를 보면, 왜 투자는 후순위일 수 밖에 없는지 4) 그래서 우리가 할 수 있는 일/해야할 일은? 아주 간단한 예시 시작하기 전에 개인적인 이야기를 먼저 하고 시작할게요~ 지난 주말에 모교에서 졸업생 초청행사가 있어서 오랜만에 포항에 다녀왔습니다. 거의 10년만의 방문이어서 참 많은 것을 느낄 수 있었던 시간이었습니다. 우선 "학부/대학원 학생들이 듣고 싶어하는 것보다 제가 하고 싶었던 말이 너무 많았는데..." 이건 저도 꼰대가 되어간다는 걸 의미한다는 거 겠죠? ^.ㅜ; 또 한가지 더 놀라웠던 사실은 학교를 구경하면서 AI라는 단어를 정말 많이 볼 수 있었다는 겁니다. 학부생들의 관심도 모두 AI였고, 사실 산경인의날 행사의 주제도 AI였습니다... | 인력의 문제... 저희때는 학과마다 정원이 있어서 정원 이상의 지원자는 학점순서로 제한했었던 것 같은데, 올해부터는 정원 제한 없이 2학년 2학기때 학과를 결정한다고 합니다. 보통 학년에 300명정도의 학생이 있고, 10개 이상의 학과가 있으니, 학생수가 20~25명 정도면 평균이라고 할 수 있습니다. 그런데, 올해는 컴퓨터공학과로만 60명이상의 학생이 지원했다고 하더군요. 그러니 일부 학과는 5명이 지원하기도 했다는... 컴공과 입장에서 학생수가 많다는 것도 문제이지만, 또 다른 문제도 있었습니다. 컴퓨터공학과가 교수님들의 이탈이 많다는 거라고 하더군요. (기업에서 훨~씬 더 많은 돈을 주고 모셔간다는..) 그만큼 관련 전문가의 수요가 부족하다는 걸 의미하겠죠? 이런 상황을 듣고 보니, AI와 관련된 인력 Shortage 문제가 생각보다 많이 심각할 수도 있겠다 싶었습니다. 손정의 할아버지가 한국에 오셔서 AI AI AI를 외치고 가시는 바람에 정부부처에서도 모두 AI전문가를 모시고 있다고 하니... 학계뿐 아니라, 현장에서도 이분들의 몸값 올라가는 소리가 생생하게 들리는 것 같습니다. 1970~80년대 강남에서도 공사를 하시는 인부들이 귀해서 몸값이 높았다는 이야기를 들었는데, 어쩌면, 사이버 공간에서 완전히 새로운 세상을 만들기 위해서 필요한 인재들의 몸값은 더 높아질 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들더군요. 2. Deflationary.. 보통 AI가 디플레이션을 유발한다고 하면 많이 사용되는 예로 '아마존이나 쿠팡같은 회사가 나오면서 유통 업체가 더 싼 가격에 물건을 제공할 수 있다'는 이야기가 언급됩니다. 오늘은 AI가 디플레이션을 유발할 수 밖에 없는 보다 근본적인 이야기를 한번 해보려고 합니다. 혹시 Moravec's Paradox 를 들어보셨나요? For AI, the hard things are easy. But, the easy things are hard. AI는 사람이 어려워 하는 것은 쉽게할 수 있지만, 오히려 사람이 쉽게 할 수 있는 것은 어려워한다는 것이지요. 예를 들어 5개 국어를 하는 것은 사람에게 너무 힘든 일이지만, AI는 쉽게 할 수 있습니다. 복잡한 수학문제를 푸는 것도 마찬가지입니다. 사람에겐 너무 어려운 것이지만, AI는 너무 쉽게 해결할 수 있습니다. 반면에 식탁을 닦는다던지 청소를 한다던지 하는 등의 일상적인 행동은 의외로 AI가 하기엔 매우 큰 어려움이 있습니다. 올해 CES에서 걸어다니는 로봇이 나왔다고 난리였는데, 사실 걷는 것 정도는 1살먹은 아이도 할 수 있는 거죠;;; 흠... 어떤 생각이 드시나요?? Moravec's paradox는 인간에게 좋은 소식이기도 하지만, 나쁜 소식이기도 합니다. 좋은 소식은 AI가 생각보다 못하는 일들이 많이 있으니, 걱정했던 것보다 일자리가 빨리 없어지진 않을 수 있다는 것입니다. 하지만, 나쁜 소식은 그 일이 말 그대로 "쉬운 일"이기 때문에 누구나할 수 있는 일이어서 연봉이 높아질 수가 없다는... 사실이죠. 실제로 미국에서 올해 채용이 늘어난 분야(industry)를 따져보면, IT와 같은 산업을 제외하면, 호텔/레스토랑 등에서 일하시는 분들이 많이 늘었다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. AI가 확산될 수록 Job market에서는 고소득을 받을 수 있는 일자리는 줄어들고, 저소득을 받을 수 있는 일자리는 늘어나면서... 자연스럽게 전체적인 임금의 하방압력을 키우는 효과가 나올 수 있다는 것입니다. 그러면, 당연히 물가가 오르기도 어려워지는 상황이 될 것입니다. AI가 디플레이션을 유발할 수 밖에 없는 이유입니다. 3. A.I + investment?? 투자를 업으로 하는 입장에서 투자의 입장에서 AI를 보면, 그냥 막연한 두려움이 앞섭니다. 사람이 아닌 AI가 투자하는 세상이 곧 올것 같은 느낌이 들기도 하고, 그런 세상이 오면, 내가 할 수 있는 일은 아무 것도 없을 것 같은 두려움이 들기도 합니다. 하지만, 반대로 AI를 하시는 분들입장에서 보면, Investing 과 관련된 일은 우선순위에서 한참 밀리는 것 같습니다. AI가 직접 투자 의사결정을 하는 세상은 절대 오지 않는다는 이야기가 아닙니다. 다만, 그 세상은 AI가 세상의 모든 것을 바꿔놓은 다음 맨~ 마지막에 올 것이라는 것을 강조하는 것입니다. 그렇게 생각하는 이유는 간단합니다. 1) 투자(Investing)의 문제가 매우 풀기 어려운 문제이기 때문입니다. (왜 그런지에 대해서는 다음에 설명할 수 있는 기회가 있을 것 같네요) 2) 반대로 이야기하면, 투자보다 더 쉬운 문제가 수없이 많다는 것입니다. 3) 즉, AI를 적용하는데 있어 투자(Invesing)는 비용(Cost) 대비 효과(Impact) 측면에서 열위라는 것이죠. (그래서 더 꾸준히 엄청난 돈을 투자할 수 있는 거대자본(ex. 블랙락...)이 이기는 싸움일 수 있을 것 같습니다) 맥킨지의 작년 4월 보고서(INSIGHTS FROM HUNDREDS OF USE CASES)에 보면, 몇가지 재미있는 사례 연구가 나옵니다. AI를 포함한 전통적인 분석 기법들이 각 산업에 어떻게 이용되고 있는지를 Case study를 했는데, 아래 그림을 보면, Marketing/sales이나, SCM/Manufacturing 부문에서는 가장 많은 적용사례가 있었다는 것을 보여줍니다. 반면, 금융이나 IT쪽은 Use case가 거의 발견되지 않았다는 걸 알 수 있네요. https://www.mckinsey.com/~/media/mckinsey/featured%20insights/artificial%20intelligence/notes%20from%20the%20ai%20frontier%20applications%20and%20value%20of%20deep%20learning/notes-from-the-ai-frontier-insights-from-hundreds-of-use-cases-discussion-paper.ashx 잠재적인 효과에 대한 내용에서도 Markeing/Sales나 SCM/Manufacturing 부문이 앞도적으로 규모가 큰 반면, Finance 쪽은 아주 미미한 수준이라는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 이런 결과가 나오는 이유는 물론 이 분야에서 수없이 많은 데이터가 실시간으로 나오기 때문이기도 하지만, 무엇보다 실제 효과가 검증되었기 때문이기도 합니다. In our use cases, for example, we found that using real-time data to predict hyperregional demand trends can increase sales by 0.25 percent to 0.75 percent, with margin improvements from lower waste and spoilage amounting to as much as half of one percentage point of sales. 상황이 이러하다 보니, 물이 위에서 아래로 흐르듯이, 안그래도 부족한 AI인력들은 "쉽고, 실제로 효과가 나타나는 것이 눈에 보이는 산업"쪽으로 먼저 갈 수 밖에 없을 것 같습니다. 인력 보다 더 중요한 문제는 돈($)인데, 금융분야에서 AI가 성공하기 위해서는 정말 어마어마한 돈이 필요할 수 있기 때문입니다. 왜 그런지를 직관적으로 설명할 수 있는 예를 보여드리겠습니다. 최근 WSJ에서 소개되면서 더 유명해진 Orbital Insight라는 회사에 대한 이야기입니다. 이 회사는 인공위성을 띄워서 전세계에 있는 2.5만개의 탱커의 사진을 분석합니다. 과거에는 불가능했던 일이 지금은 가능한 이유는 탱커의 그림자 크기를 AI(이미지 인식)를 통해서 계산할 수 있기 때문이죠. 탱크의 바깥쪽 그림자를 통해서 탱크의 크기를 알 수 있고, 안쪽 그림자를 통해서 탱크에 저장되어 있는 원유의 양을 알 수 있습니다. 이렇게 되면, Orbital insight라는 회사는 전세계에 저장되어 있는 원유재고를 거의 실시간으로 파악할 수 있게 됩니다 ㅜㅜ;;; 이러면, EIA에서 일주일에 한번씩 발표하는 원유재고를 볼 필요가 없겠네요. 문제는 이 데이터는 돈을 지불한 소수만이 가질 수 있다는 점이겠죠. 실제로 최근 사우디에서 드론 공격이 있었던 날, 유가가 장중에 20%까지 올랐다가 결국 다 빠졌던 것을 기억하실 겁니다. 이때 Orbital insight에서는 사우디를 제외한 다른 나라의 원유재고가 줄어들지 않고 있다는 것을 실시간으로 파악하고, 이 정보를 골드만 삭스를 포함한 고객들에게 돈을 받고 팔았을 것입니다. 여기서 돈(Cash)이 중요한 이유가 나옵니다. 첫번째 글에서 소개해드린 블랙락의 사례처럼 시장에서 중요하다고 생각하는 많은 경제지표들이... 이제는 점점 가치가 없어지는 구간으로 가는데, 그 정보를 얻기 위해서는 돈이 필요하다는 것입니다. 여기까지 오면, 결론은 좀 암울한 이야기를 할 수 밖에 없을 것 같습니다. 1) 금융/투자 분야는 비용 대비 효과가 크지도 않고, 아직 검증되지 않았기 때문에 왠만해서는 이쪽 분야에 뛰어들기 쉽지 않다. 하지만,, 2) 이미 글로벌 투자회사들은 엄청난 투자를 해왔고, 이를 돕는 기술의 발전(위성, AI 등등)으로 엄청난 자본을 가진 회사만 이기는 싸움이 될 수 있다. 4. 우리가 해야할 일은? 그렇다고 "그럼 우린 안되겠군..." 이렇게 생각하고, 아무것도 안할 수는 없습니다. 발상의 전환이 필요합니다. 즉, (AI가 투자의사결정까지 하는 세상)이라는 최종목표가 너무 멀다고 해서 포기하는 것이 아니라, "우리의 투자의사결정을 AI가 도와줄 수 있도록만 해보자"에서 부터 시작을 하면됩니다.
