고3 시절 수험 준비와 가족사가 겹쳐 극도의 스트레스 상태에서 몇달을 보낸적이 있어요. 9시쯤 공부가 끝나면 잘때까진 할 수 있는게 아무것도 없어서 방에 쳐박혀 누워서 사색만 하게 되는데, 스트레스 때문에 정신은 불안정하고, 몇달간 눈감고 온갖 부정과 불안의 세계를 돌아다녔었죠. 처음엔 내일 정말 학교 가기 싫다 정도의 가벼운 감정이었지만, 하루하루 감정의 문을 열고, 칠흑과 같은 어둠속에서 깊은 계단을 내려가고, 또 헤메다 문을 열고, 내려가고, 하다보니 어느새 나도 모르게 감정의 최심부, 죽음을 관장하는 부분까지 들어와 있더라구요. 그렇게 며칠을 죽음에 대해 생각했습니다. 난 왜 살고 있을까, 장국영은 왜 죽었을까, 죽는다는건 뭘까? 머리속으로 정말 죽음과 관련된 생각을 깊이 깊이 파고들었습니다. 생각이라는게 다 그렇지만, 여기가 끝인가 싶어도, 막상 헤집고 더 깊이 들어가려고 하면 또 그 다음이 있더라구요. 그렇게 낮에는 열심히 공부하고, 밤에는 눈을 감고 계속 죽음의 심연을 탐구하던 어느날, 평소와는 조금 다른 느낌이 드는 문을 보았어요. 한눈에도 여태까지 돌아다니며 본것과는 다른, 황홀하고 찬란한 기운이 드는 이질적인 문이 하나 있었죠. 그리고 언제나처럼 문에 손을 대고 손잡이를 살짝 당기는 순간, 문틈사이로 살짝 비춰지는 문 속의 풍경을 보고 알았어요. 이 문을 열면 다시는 돌이킬 수 없을거라는걸. 황급히 문에서 손을 떼고 눈을 뜨고 침대에서 일어났어요. 몰랐지만 호흡은 잔뜩 가빠져있고, 식은땀으로 옷이고 이불이고 다 젖어 있었어요. 화장실에 가서 찬물로 세수를 하며 정신을 차리려고 했지만, 이미 제가 본 그 절망의 광경은 뇌리에 깊이 박혀버린 이후였죠. 당시의 제 상황에 대해 생각해보면 스스로는 정말 괴로웠지만, 객관적으로 봤을때 절망적인 상황은 아니었으며, 무엇보다 규칙적으로 매일매일 학교에 가야 했고 분명한 목표가 있었기에, 사색중에는 양껏 부정적인 생각을 하다가도 잠이 들고 다음날이 되면 또 수능을 잘 쳐서 Y대에 가야 한다는 목표를 이루기 위해 아무렇지도 않게 스스로를 채찍질 했어요. 그래서 '정말 내가 자살할수도 있지 않을까' 하는 생각은 사실 그 전까진 한번도 해본적이 없었어요. 나는 힘들고 괴롭고 외로웠지만, 당장 해야 하는 일이 있었으니까 그런데 그날 제가 문틈사이로 본 광경은, 아주 잠깐 좁은 틈새로 봤음에도 불구하고 그런걸 다 부질없게 만들고도 남을만큼 아주 강렬한것이었어요. 그 경험 이후 제게 죽음은 더 이상 꿈, 사색속 남의 세계 이야기가 아니었어요. 아침에 깨어난 순간부터 일상을 보내고, 공부를 하고, 세상에서 제일 좋아하는 음악을 들으며 집에 오는 순간까지도 그 광경은 머리속에 남아 내게 어서 이리로 오라고 계속 속삭였어요. 며칠을 그렇게 보내고 나서 이건 안되겠다고 생각했어요, 이걸 어떻게든 해결 안하면 앞으로의 인생은 정말 고통의 연속일거라고, 아니 사실은 '앞으로의 인생' 자체가 그리 길게 계속되지 않을거라고 확신이 들었거든요. 그래서 주말에 하루 날을 잡고, 휴식을 위한 베스트 컨디션을 만든 뒤 종일 생각했어요. 어떻게 하면 그 날 본 광경을 잊을 수 있을까? 어떻게하면 이 강렬한 죽음에 대한 유혹을 잊고 다시 예전처럼 돌아갈 수 있을까? 대안을 하나씩 하나씩 찾아서 대입해봐도, 문제는 쉽게 해결될 기미가 보이지 않았어요. 이건 어떨까? 저건 어떨까? 하고 제 나름대로 젊어서 잘 돌아기는 머리를 가지고 죽음의 유혹을 잊어보려고 했지만, 제가 생각해낸 답이 Happy 라면, 그날 본 광경은 마치 널리파이어마냥 제가 생각한 삶의 공식 끝에 붙어 모든것을 다 0으로 만들어버렸죠. Happy*0, 이렇게요. 하지만 위에도 말했듯이 저는 다행히도 나름 축복받은 환경에서, 그래도 강한 정신력을 가지고 태어난 행운아였으며, 어마어마한 욕망덩어리였어요. 다시 예전처럼 살고 싶다는 내 욕망은 내 생각보다도 훨씬 강했고, 저는 마침내 계속 살아가기 위한 마법의 주문을 찾아낼 수 있었어요. 그렇게 삽시간에 상황은 역전되었고, 저는 역으로 이 마법의 주문을 검증하기 위해 온갖 부정적인 생각을 해봤어요. 하지만 소용 없었습니다. 죽음의 유혹이 *0이었다면, 제가 생각해낸 마법의 주문은 =live 였다고 할 수 있겠네요. 정말 거짓말 같은 얘기지만, 그렇게 죽음에 대한 충동은 제 삶에서 완벽하게 지워졌습니다. 저 날 이후 수능 볼 때까지 단 한번도 죽고 싶다는 생각을 다시 해본적이 없으며, 심지어 성인이 되고 나서 저때보다 더 힘든 고난의 행군을 겪을때도 상황이 더 힘들어질수록 제 마음속은 오히려 나는 어떻게든 더 살거야 하는 더 강한 오기로 가득찼어요. 작년에 한창 아플때도 마찬가지로 어떻게든 다시 건강해지겠다고 생각했지, 너무 힘들어서 차라리 죽는게 낫겠다는 생각은 1초도 하지 않았어요. 그 경험 전에도 많은 사람들이 성공하고, 안정적으로 보이고, 활발하고, 돈이 많고, 친구가 많고, 가족들이랑 잘 지내는 사람들이 자살했다는 소식을 들었을때 왜 죽었는지에 대해 의아해하고, 그들보다 조금 더 깊은 공감 능력을 가진 사람들은 누구나 마음에 드러내지 않는 상처가 있다, 강해보인다고 다 강한게 아니다. 우울증이라는 병이 원래 그렇다. 이런 말로 그들의 궁금증을 해소해주려고 하는 광경을 봐왔고, 지금도 마찬가지에요. 이젠 그런 얘기를 들을때마다 생각해요. 저들이 하는 말은 맞는말이에요. 사람은 누구나 깊은 상처를 받아요. 마음속 어둠을 가지고 살아요. 우울하면 살 의욕이 안 생겨요. 저도 자주 하는 얘기에요. 그런데 제 생각엔, 자살을 실행하는 이유는 그거랑은 좀 달라요, 절대로 돌이킬 수 없는 행동이라는걸 알면서도, 파멸속으로 걸어들어가는 진짜 이유는 개인마다 조금씩 차이는 있겠지만 결국 제가 그날 본 광경의 편린을 그 사람들도 봤기 때문이고, 저 위의 것들은 그냥 그 문이 존재하는 마음속 가장 깊은곳으로 그들이 걸어들어가게 된, 어떻게보면 간접적인 이유일뿐이에요. 그리고 일단 그 광경을 보게되면, 솔직히 말하면 주위 사람들이 어떻게 해줄 수 있는 단계는 지난거나 다름 없어요. 그래서 사람들에게 말해주고 싶었어요. 사람이 죽는 이유는 그게 아니라고, 그런건 별 소용 없는 얘기라고, 여러분이 봤을 죽음으로 사람을 이끄는 광경의 정체가 무엇이고, 그것을 이겨내기 위해선 어떻게 해야 하는지, 나는 어떻게 그것을 극복하고 이겨냇는지 모두 얘기해주고 싶었어요. 그래서 한명이라도 더 나처럼 이겨낼 수 있게 만들고 싶었어요. 근거는 보잘것 없는 저 개인의 경험일뿐이라도, 풀어서 설명하면 사람들을 설득할 수 있다는 확신이 있었고, 제게 그럴 능력이 있다고 생각했어요. 그래서 대학 다니면서 열심히 글을 썼어요. 지금보다 더 보잘것 없는 글솜씨였지만 최대한 내가 겪은것 아는것을 몇주동안 조금씩 쓰고 수정하고 쓰고 수정하며 완성해갔어요. 그때의 경험을 떠올리는것은 내게도 꽤나 아픈 일이었지만, 어쨌든 괜찮았어요. 나에겐 이미 마법의 주문이 있으니까요. 그리고 그렇게 열심히 글을 다 쓰고나서 이제 이걸 어디다 올리지, 누구에게 말해주지 하고 생각하는 순간 깨달았어요. 사실 이 얘기를 할 수 있는 곳, 사람은 세상 어디에도 없다는걸요. 왜냐면 사람을 죽게 만드는 그 이유라는게, 내가 간접적으로 이렇다 하고 설명하는것만으로도 너무 위험했거든요. 내가 그걸 극복한 주문은 사실 높은 확률로 나에게, 혹은 나와 비슷한 마인드를 가진 사람에게만 효과가 있을거 같았는데, 죽음의 광경에 대한 묘사는 사실 한번이라도 자살에 대해 생각해본 사람이라면 그 누구라도 당장 강렬한 실행 충동에 이를 수 있게 만들거 같았어요. 글을 들고 학교 교수님께 찾아가서 상담해볼까도 생각했고, 아예 자살상담 센터나 학회 같은데 가볼까도 생각했지만, 소용없었어요. 어차피 교수님도 학회 사람들도 자살상담 센터 사람들도 다 사람이잖아요. 얘기했듯이 저는 모든 까지는 아니더라도 정말 엄청나게 많은 자살문제에 대해 제가 생각한 이유가 정답이라는 매우 깊은 확신을 가지고 있었고, 그들이라고 안전할거라는 보장을 할 수가 없었어요. 이유를 설명할 수 없으니 해결책도 설명할 수 없게 되었고, 글은 결국 꼭꼭 숨겨둘 수 밖에 없게 되었어요. 하지만 전 포기하고 싶진 않았기에 어떻게 하면 이유에 대해 직접적으로 얘기하지 않고 사람들이 나랑 좀 더 살 수 있도록 할 수 있을지 매일 고민하며 살고, 그때 그때 생각한 최선의 방법을 통해 내 목소리 닿는 사람들이라도 도울 수 있도록 하자고 결심했고, 그렇게 살기로 했어요. 몇달 전, 주위 비슷한 상황에 처한 누군가의 얘기를 듣고, 꼭 해주고 싶은 생각이 하나 떠올라서 얘기해준게 있어요. 얘기해주고 나니 이게 지금 생각하는 제가 비슷한 처지를 겪어본 동지로서 해줄 수 있는 가장 진심어린 이야기라는 생각이 들어서, 어딘가에 꼭 올리고 싶었어서 또 글을 썼어요. 그리고 적절한 때에 옆동네에 올리려고 텍스트 파일로 만들어 놨는데... 매번 용기가 부족해서 못 올렸었어요. 왜냐면 너무 민감하고 중대한주제고, 저는 주관적으로는 매우 자신감에 차있지만, 사실 객관적으로는 제가 여러모로 많이 부족한 사람이란걸 잘 알거든요. 그게 제 몇 안되는 장점이고, 근데요, 그래도 오늘은 꼭 말해보고 싶어요. 그러니까 용기내서 써보려고요. 길고 두서없는 글 읽어주셔서 감사합니다. 미뤄주세요 부디 하루만 미뤄주세요. 하루밖에 안 남은 내 삶에서 유일하게 마지막으로 하고 싶은 일인데, 할 일이라는 생각이 들었다면, 하루 정도는 차분히 준비하는것도 괜찮지 않을까요? 오늘보다 내일이 더 좋은 날일수도 있잖아요. 부디 일주일만 미뤄주세요. 생각해보면 일주일이라는 시간은 정말 긴 시간이에요. 월화수목금금금 바쁜 일상 속에서 우린 그걸 잊고 살기도 하지만, 세상의 많은 기적이 채 일주일도 채우지 못한 기간 내에 일어나고는 해요. 부디 한달만 미뤄주세요 사실 죽음과 삶의 권리는 아무리 미뤄도, 어떤 상황에도 우리 손에 남아 있는 유일한 권리에요. 우리는 누구보다도 더 그걸 잘 알고 있잖아요. 이건 숙제도 아니고 작업물도 아니에요. 누가 시키는것도 아니고 감시하는것도 아니에요. 한달 미룬다고 못하게 할 수 있는 사람, 아무도 없어요. 그 다음에, 한번만 생각해주세요. 우리가 떠올린 지금 죽어야 하는 이유에는 반드시 헛점이 있어요. 아무리 지금 당장 그게 완벽하고 거대해보여도, 그것은 필연적으로 너무나도 명백한 하자가 있는 허상일뿐이에요. 그리고 '지금 죽어야 하는 이유' 를 떠올린 여러분은, 같은 방법으로 그 헛점과 반례를 반드시 떠올릴 수 있어요. 그 둘은 형제와 같은 존재에요. 하나를 떠올릴 수 있었다면, 나머지 하나도 반드시 찾아낼 수 있어요. 그러니까 부디, 제발, 조금만 미뤄주세요.
