저는 14-15시즌 이전과 그 이후의 NBA는 성격이 굉장히 다른 리그라고 주장을 합니다. 리그 트렌드 자체가 완전히 달라요. 뭐 이유는 다들 아시다시피 3점 때문입니다. 이 트렌드의 상징인 스테판 커리와 골든 스테이트, 그리고 스타일은 다르지만 골스보다 더 극단적으로 3점을 시도하고 성공시키는 댄토니와 하든 등의 공이 큽니다. 르브론 제임스조차 18-19시즌에는 3점 슛을 굉장히 연습한 티가 나죠. 이 트렌드에 따라가지 못하는 선수들은 엄청난 저평가를 받고 있습니다. 위에서 말한 이야기를 간단하게 3점 슛 시도 개수와 변화율만 갖고도 이야기할 수 있습니다. 겸사겸사 과거 이야기도 하면서 잠시 느바 역사 속으로 들어가볼까요. 사실 지금 트렌드 이전의 이야기를 한번 해보고 싶었습니다. 제가 NBA를 보기 이전 이야기(2003년 이전)는 글로만 하겠습니다. 사실 레퍼런스 드가서 더 퍼면 있는데 귀찮아서ㅋㅋㅋ 나무위키에 이 이전시대 3점슛 이야기가 요약이 잘 되어있고 내용이 정확해서 아마 같은 말일거에요. 3점슛은 NBA에는 79-80시즌에 처음으로 도입되었습니다. 이 시절만 하더라도 경기당 1개씩 꾸준하게 성공시키는 선수조차 드물었죠. 래리 버드가 굉장히 슛이 정확한 선수였지만 3점 슛 성공개수가 경기당 1개가 간신히 되던가 좀 안되던가 그럴겁니다. 물론 래리 버드는 대학때까지 코트에 3점 라인이 안 그려져 있던 시절의 선수이기 때문에 저것도 시대보정하면 엄청난 숫자이긴 합니다. 93-94까지 NBA 팀들의 경기당 3점 슛 성공개수는 평균 3개를 간신히 넘었습니다. 한 선수가 아니라 한 팀이요. 림에서 가장 가까운 위치에서 슛을 하는 것이 가장 효율적이라고 굳게 믿던 시절이고(지금도 틀린 말은 아닙니다), 때는 4대센터가 판을 치던 시절이죠. 그러다가 94-95시즌 리그 룰에 중대한 변화가 생깁니다. 저득점 트렌드를 개선하고자 NBA가 3점 라인을 7.24m에서 6.71m로 당긴거죠. 이 시도 자체는 실패했습니다. 득점 트렌드는 변화가 없이 3점 슛 시도 개수만 증가해서 오히려 더 별로라는 평가를 받았고, 3년 뒤 롤백됩니다. 이 시절 NBA영상에서 가끔 3점라인이 2개 그어져있거나 하는 이유가 바로 이 때문입니다. 하지만 이때쯤 3점 슛에 대한 인식이 슬슬 변합니다. 어 이거 생각보다는 효율적인데? 노마크 만드는 전술 잘 쓰면 전술 획일화도 안 되고 기댓값은 애초에 3점이 더 높으니 잘 쓰면 더 좋겠다... 해서 3점 슛의 효용을 리그 전체가 좀더 인식하는 계기가 되었다고 볼 수 있습니다. 실제로 3점 라인이 롤백되도 3점 성공개수는 줄지 않았다는게 그 증거죠. 이게 3점에 대한 첫 트렌드의 변화입니다. 이때쯤에 많이 던지는 팀은 경기당 7개 성공, 평균적으로 4~5개 선이었을 겁니다. 그리고 느리지만 착실하게 리그는 3점 시도를 늘리기 시작했고, 2000년대 중반 들어 기폭제가 하나 생깁니다.  05-06 시즌의 피닉스 선즈는 리그 최초로 경기당 평균 3점 성공개수 10개를 돌파한 팀입니다. 감독이었던 마이크 댄토니는 한번 더 언급되겠지만 NBA 리그 트렌드 변화에서 빼놓을 수 없는 사람이죠. 이 시절 피닉스는 당시 기준 엄청난 페이스의 업템포 농구로 유명했습니다. 7초 내로 샷 디시전을 하는 것이 목표였을 정도로 트렌지션 게임을 즐겨하던 팀이죠. 이게 첫 번째 기폭제가 됩니다.  08-09 시즌 들어 두 번째로 10개를 돌파한 팀들이 나옵니다. 닉스는 사실 자말 크로포드의 난사(...)가 정말 컸으니 논외로 하면, 저의 응원팀이었던 올랜도 매직은 드와이트 하워드(백업으로는 배스나 고탓)를 기둥으로 박고 나머지 4명이 스팟업이 가능한 소위 1-2-3.5-3.5-5라는 극단적인 조합을 들고 나와서 NBA 파이널까지 진출하는 성과를 거둡니다. 이는 다음해에도 이어지죠. 선즈와 올랜도를 거치며 리그의 3점 성공개수가 꽤 유의미한 폭으로 증가합니다.  이제 보면 13-14시즌은 이러한 트렌드의 마지막 시즌이 되었네요. 10개를 넘긴 팀은 없지만 평균은 4~5년 전에 비하면 꽤 올랐죠. 스테판 커리가 리그 아이콘이 되기 정확하기 1년 전입니다.  14-15시즌. 제임스 하든과 스테판 커리의 영향력이 보이십니까? 이 시즌을 기점으로 리그는 돌아올 수 없는 강을 건넙니다. 마이크 댄토니는 휴스턴으로 돌아와 하든의 3점을 종용하고, 피닉스 시절보다도 극단적인 스몰볼을 돌리면서 엄청난 3점을 주문합니다.  18-19. 5년 전만 해도 리그에서 3점 성공개수가 10개가 넘어가면 엄청난 3점팀이라고 했었는데, 이제는 10개가 안 되면 외곽슛이 없는 팀이라는 평을 받습니다. 덩달아 평균 득점도 증가폭이 어마무시하죠. 댄토니의 휴스턴은 그 와중에서도 또 홀로 돋보입니다ㅋㅋㅋ 저는 댄토니는 우승 못 해도 명전급 감독 평가 받을거라 확신합니다. 우승컵 없다고 폄하하기엔 느바 역사에서 영향력이 너무 강하거든요. 25개의 팀이 경기당 10개가 넘는 3점을 성공시켰으며, 리그 평균 경기당 3점 성공개수는 11.4개입니다. 우승 팀 토론토도 경기당 12.4개. 트렌드를 거스르지는 않았습니다. 재미삼아 리그 3점 트렌드의 증가폭을 한번 추적해 봤습니다. 저도 보면서 느낌으로만 와닿던걸 수치로 보니 해석이 확실해지네요. 여기에 룰 변화(점점 관대해지는 트레블링, 파울 콜 완화...)까지 곁들이면 불과 5년 사이에 NBA가 얼마나 변했는지를 알 수 있습니다. 르브론-던컨 파이널붙던 느바와 토론토가 우승한 느바는 같은 HD화질이지만 다른 리그 수준인 겁니다. 이렇게 급격하게 변하니 농구팬들조차 잘 인지하지 못하는 것도 이해는 갑니다. NBA팬으로 잘봤습니다. 조던세대를 지나 르브론이 히트로 오면서 부터 제대로 보기 시작했는데 그 시절에도 생각해보면 경기흐름을 바꾼건 베티에나 마리오 차머스, 콜, 레이 알랜의 3점이 이였던거 같습니다. 지금처럼 극단적 횟수는 아니였지만 정말 3점 슛은 임팩트가 있었죠. 르브론 역시 2점 닥돌로 차곡 차곡 쌓다가 모멘텀이 좋으면 3점을 시도해서 쐐기를 박기도 했고, 보쉬역시 3점이 나름 준수했던거같습니다... 그런데 부각되진 않았죠
그런데 14-15 소셜에서 스플래쉬 브라더... 라는 별명을 처음 봤습니다. 뭐지... 누구지? 노... 더 보기
