주말동안 넷플릭스 오리지널인 마인드헌터 시즌2를 봤습니다. 워낙 재미있게 봤던 드라마라서 시즌1도 좋아했고 시즌2도 많이 기다렸는데 기다린 보람이 있더군요. 시즌2가 시즌1보다 좋았다 싶었을 정도로 재미있었습니다. 그래서 시즌1도 겸해서 마인드헌터에 대해서 이야기해볼까 해요. 마인드헌터는 FBI 소속의 요원인 주인공이 오늘날에는 익숙하지만 당시에는 과학적인지조차 의심 받았던 프로파일링을 구축하는 내용을 담은 수사 드라마입니다. 그래서 주인공을 비롯한 등장 인물은 창작이지만, 나머지 인터뷰의 대상이 되는 범죄자는 실존 인물이라는 독특한 특징이 있죠. 마인드헌터가 갖는 매력은 다루고자 하는 소재를 아주 정숙하게 다루기 때문에 상대적으로 거부감이 덜합니다. 실존하는 연쇄 살인범들을 직접 인터뷰하고 범행에 대한 묘사를 직접 다루지만 잔인하진 않아요. 절대 직접적으로 그 사건을 연출하는 일은 없거든요. 매 화가 시작되기 전에 나오는 데니스 라이더조차 직접 살인을 다루는 연출은 없습니다. 그러나 묘한 긴장감을 줘요. 불안감을 주는 음악도 괜찮지만 그 무엇보다도 적절한 연출을 통해서 악인의 성격을 표현하되, 답을 내리지 않아서 그들이 어떤 짓을 할지 스스로 상상하게 만들거든요. 전 그게 너무 좋더군요. 또다른 관점에선 마인드헌터를 보면 영화 머니볼이 떠오릅니다. 프로파일링을 다룬 드라마와 세이버매트릭스를 다룬 영화를 같이 떠올리는 이유는 둘 다 기존 체제에 대한 설득을 다루는 작품이기 때문입니다. 과학적인 접근으로 합리적인 추론이 나온다고 해서 모두를 설득시킬 수 없어요. 여러 이유가 있겠지만 대체로 관성적으로 남은 기존 체제에 대한 믿음이 확고하니까요. 그래서 두 작품 모두 주인공이 하는 일은 사실 설득만이 남아요. 그리고 이런 느낌은 시즌2에서 좀 더 확실하게 묘사됩니다. 마인드헌터의 시대적 배경은 70년대 후반의 미국입니다. 온갖 편견과 차별이 제도적으로만 없어졌을 뿐, 대부분의 사회 구성원에게 온전하게 남아있는 시대를 다루기에 주인공이 타인을 설득하는 과정이 더더욱 힘겹고 고난이 됩니다. 찰스 맨슨을 인터뷰하거나 시즌2의 주요 사건인 애틀랜타 연쇄 살인을 다룰 때에는 노골적으로 묘사하죠. 여기에 더해서 주인공 홀든보다 빌과 웬디에 집중합니다. 두 사람이 갖는 내면의 갈등이 이 주제와 맞아떨어지거든요. 그래서 시즌2는 주인공을 홀든이라 할 수 있나 싶을 정도로 비중이 꽤 줄었습니다. 전 이것도 좋았어요. 만일 계속해서 홀든의 비중이 높았다면 꽤 밋밋했을 것 같거든요. 무엇보다도 전 시즌2가 좋았던 건 모든 갈등이 제대로 연소되지 못하고 남았을 때의 그 처량함이 좋더라고요. 막을 내리지만 누구나 다음 시즌을 기대하게 만들죠. 단순히 이야기를 끝내지 않고 다음 시즌을 넘기는 것과는 달라서 좋았어요. 여담으로 등장 인물 중에서 시즌2가 시작되기 전부터 화제가 되었던 찰스 맨슨보다도 마인드헌터에서 제일 인상적인 인물은 에드 켐퍼 같아요. 시즌1 때도 인상적이었는지 시즌2에서 덜 나오지만 전 찰스 맨슨이 나왔던 부분보다도 좋았어요. 드라마가 갖는 핵심을 어떻게 보면 유치할 정도로 직접 말하는데도 절묘하더군요. 그 부분을 보고 나면 현재 시점에서 이미 결말을 아는 과거를 보는데도 이런 생각이 들곤 합니다. 주인공 집단이 해내고자 하는 일이 정말 의미가 있을까하고요. 혹시 안 보신 분이 있다면 시즌1과 시즌2를 모두 추천합니다. 시즌2의 단점은 안타깝게도 시즌1보다 에피소드가 하나 적다는 겁니다.
