최근 인터넷을 찾아보다가 특이한 문화를 발견했다. 주로 트위터 등지에서 발견되는 자타칭 '정병러'라 불리는 무리들의 생태가 그것인데, 이 '정병러'라는 이름은 정신병자에 대한 그들 나름의 축약 명칭(정신병+-er)으로, 즉, 정병러란 대외적으로 (실제 정신병자인지 아닌지는 관계없이) 정신병자의 퍼스널리티를 표방하며 넷상에서 활동하는 자를 의미한다. 어떤 이유에서인지 정병러들은 정신병자나 기타 다른 표현들 보다는 이 명칭을 보다 선호하는듯 싶다. 이들은 자신의 정신 질환명을 처음 자신의 페이지에 방문하는 사람들도 쉽게 알아볼 수 있게 프로필이나 공지 등을 이용, 전면에 내세우면서 스스로를 대표하는 정체성으로 삼고, 글귀와 사진 등을 통해 자신의 병적 증세를 전시하는 모습을 보인다. 그 양상은 다양한듯 보이면서도 실은 천편일률적인데, 우울, 고통, 고독 등의 부정적인 감정을 호소하는 상투적인 레토릭과 인스타 감성으로 조작, 편집된 (셀피) 이미지, 개중에 좀 튀고 싶은 이들이 자해 인증이라면서 손목에 난 생채기 사진을 올리는 식이다. 그 모든 것들은 자기 고백이라기에는 스스로에 대해 특정하는 디테일이 결여되어 있고, 병리적인 사고에서 기인하는 발산적인 영감의 표현이라기에는 다자이 오사무를 위시한 '병든 천재'의 전형을 의식적으로 흉내내는 듯한 인상을 주는 조잡함이 있다. 글에 덧붙여지는 불특정 다수를 초청하는 해시태그는 이것이 '비극적인 나'를 선전하여 관심을 구하는 관심병 증상임을 나타낸다. 그처럼 표현되는 고통의 형상에는 새로움이 없다. 한없이 침잠하는 듯한 우울, 죽고 싶다는 생각 자체는 어느 누구라도 살아가면서 어느정도는 갖게 되는 것인데, 그들의 고통이 다른 이들의 것에 비해 유별난 것으로 구분 되어야 할 이유는 무엇인가. 적어도 내게는 그 무엇이 보이지 않는다. 그 호소의 지점은 모두가 어느정도는 공유하는 정서에 지나지 않을 뿐더러, 그들이 소셜 네트워크에 투자하는 열성으로 부터는 벗어나기 힘든 비애를 대하는 진중한 체념의 감정이 나타나지 않기 때문이다. 이를 정신병증에 대한 편견이라 불러도 좋다. 그러나 편견에 불과할지라도 그런 까닭으로 그들의 호소가 호소력을 가지지 못한다고 느끼는 것을 어찌할 수는 없는것 같다. 그리하여 모이는 관심도 다만 리트윗, 마음 버튼 카운터 수치와 단지 악의없을 뿐인 상투적인 위로의 어구만으로 표현된다. 호소함의 표현 수준 자체가 솟아나는 감정을 어떤 맥락에 결부함이 없이 자동적으로 묘사하는 일에 그칠 뿐이라서 감상 또한 그러한 피상적인 인상의 범위를 넘어서서는 떠오르지 않기 때문이다. 이처럼 관심두지 않고, 이해하지도 않으연서도 표할 수 있는 소극적인 동조의 표현 정도만이 그들이 갈구하여 얻을 수 있는 진심의 거의 전부이므로, 따라서 그들의 고독은 해소되지 못한다. 관심을 구하는것 자체는 사회적 생물의 본능이며, SNS가 수행하는 본연의 역할이므로 새삼 놀라울 것도, 과잉 지적할 필요도 없지만, 달리 자랑할 것도, 남과 다르다고 내세울 개성도 없어서, 한없는 무기력으로 부터 자신을 구할 의욕도 없어서 그저 손쉽게 스스로의 결함을 전시하며 동정을 구하기로 만족하는 세태란 유감스럽다.
